See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

3) Eterno: Hoy celebramos a San José.

In a new effort to enhance communications in the Catskills, the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is partnering with New York's ConnectALL initiative to expand wireless and broadband access throughout the New York City watershed. The initiative was motivated by operational challenges faced by DEP staff due to poor cell coverage, and a recent Request for Information (RFI) seeks input from telecommunications providers and other stakeholders on how to eliminate cell phone dead zones. In this episode, DEP Commissioner Rohit "Rit" Aggarwala and Water Supply Deputy Commissioner Paul Rush join host Brett Barry for a discussion about the RFI; why a robust communications network is increasingly crucial; and how a network could be built to benefit everyone in the region. To put the complicated NYC/Catskills relationship into context, we check in with Lize Mogel––producer of the podcast series, Views from the Watershed––for a fascinating historical perspective. We also hear from local Town Clerk Joyce Grant, whose anecdotal evidence illustrates just how dangerous cellular dead zones can be in the remote Catskills, where land lines and cable internet can also be scarce. Grant is frustrated by what she characterizes as a minority of residents who are opposed to cell towers marring the mountain landscape. Referring to a proposal for a tower to be built in Shandaken, she says, "It's going to be a pole that's 85 feet tall, and it may be viewable above the trees... but it's a pole... that could save lives. We have to look at it like that."For more than a century, the Catskills have provided New York City with billions of gallons of clean drinking water. Michael #1: content-types package for better MIME types/Content-Type It started with this comment from Raf. mimetypes — Map filenames to MIME types It is oddly missing very common types and varies by platform, OS install and other factors (see this function). Search around and found python-magic. Seems great but ImportError: failed to find libmagic. Check your installation → brew install libmagic magic.from_file("testdata/test.pdf") → FileNotFoundError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: 'testdata/test.pdf' hmm So I had to create my own. Introducing content-types A Python library to map file extensions to MIME types. Unlike other libraries, this one does not try to access the file or parse the bytes of the file or stream. It just looks at the extension. Better support than mimetypes builtin. Brian #2: Wagtail 6.4 Release notes Lots of great updates, but I want to zoom in on background tasks. 6.4 includes django-tasks which is an available implementation of DEP 0014: Background workers This proposal is accepted and this thread includes a great talk from DjangoCon Europe 2024 Why is this cool? Even though django-tasks says it's “under active development”, as long as you pin the version and test your behavior depending on this, it must be ready to use if wagtail is going for it. Don't you think? Michael #3: Build It Yourself from Armin Ronacher, sent in by Rafael Weingartner An excellent article pushing back on too many dependencies Maybe the advice of always prefer code reuse isn't that great after all? It's much much easier to solve small little problems these days due to AI. Take Postmark as an example. “It's time to have a new perspective: we should give kudos to engineers who write a small function themselves instead of hooking in a transitive web of crates. We should be suspicious of big crate graphs. Celebrated are the minimal dependencies, the humble function that just quietly does the job, the code that doesn't need to be touched for years because it was done right once.” - Armin Brian #4: Build backend popularity over time Bastian Venthur This is just for projects using pyproject.toml Apparently he did this last year as well, so we can see some trends. Results setuptools: ~50% (last year ~50%) poetry: ~30% (last year ~33%) hatchling: (percent not listed, but looks like 12-15%), (last year 10%) flit: ~5% (last year ~10%) other: (above flit now) Analysis: setuptools continues to grow in absolute numbers and maintain it's percentage. poetry declining hatchling growing flit declining Brian commentary This is not surprising to me. I generally use hatchling for more control, and setuptools for simple projects. I think we might end up with mostly setuptools and hatchling in a couple years. Dawson, returning from spending his whole offscreen summer in Philadelphia with Gale, ends up on a bus next to a very confident pixie-cut blonde. When she disappears after he apparently bores them both to sleep yammering about Joey, he assumes he'll never see her again. He assumes wrong, and is no match for her aggressive come-ons. Her sexual overtures while Dawson's out driving them around in Mitch's boat lead Dawson to make some reckless choices with expensive consequences; knowing this girl works at the local exotic dance establishment, Pacey gets the idea to knock off Risky Business with a stripper party at the Leery house. Through all this, Joey has alternated between parrying the unwanted attention of Rob Logan, her new boss at the marina, and regretting the way she told Dawson off in the Season 2 finale. Roomies Jen and Jack have reached a new level of platonically intimate friendship and are so adorable even Grams seems like they're giving her a cavity -- but in a fun way! Less fun: the tyranny of cheer captain Belinda McGovern, who is terrorizing her classmates with slut-shaming and fatphobia. Jen notices, apparently for the first time, and decides to fight back by trying out for the cheerleading team. But what you really want to know is whether her hair has grown back out: we're thrilled to let you know it has. You made it through the wilderness of our two-week holiday break: welcome back to our episode on "Like A Virgin"! JOIN THE AWT CLUB
Join the DEP team (Bill Austin, Sean Mitchell and Blake McLean) as they sit down with Bill Herbert, author of the Daniel Energy Partners' latest report, "2025 and Beyond Outlook: Waiting for a Slow Pitch". The conversation dives into the complexities of the energy sector as we head into 2025, covering market dynamics, geopolitical uncertainties, the rise of deepwater production, and the evolving role of natural gas and power generation. The conversation was a great way to end 2024 and look into 2025.
