The conversation isn't about crime or punishment, but about the quiet stress that comes from living out of alignment with yourself. Dr. Killeen reflects on why sometimes it's okay to disappoint others if the alternative is disappointing yourself, and how unresolved inner conflict can quietly drain your energy at work and at home.

Can a Biophilic Strategy redefine our Urban Future?

Journal of Biophilic Design

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 5, 2025 56:49

"The way we've conceived cities for the past 100 years has been far too extractive, far too one-dimensional. We need cities that are more productive, multi-dimensional, and adaptable." Ludo Pittie leads WSP's 75-strong UK landscape and urban design team, guiding the company's landscape strategy and design thinking, and is also driving a global WSP exploration of ‘the Future Ready Landscape' which strives to anticipate future needs, and embed adaptable design practices to create sustainable places that are ready for today and tomorrow. Urban spaces should be biophilic interconnected systems that prioritise human and ecological wellbeing. This goes beyond traditional sustainability, we need regenerative design, an approach that doesn't just minimise harm, but actively restores and enhances natural systems. The 15-minute city concept reimagines urban living. "It's about providing essential social needs locally," Ludo explains. "Access to schools, food production, healthcare – all within a 15-minute radius. It's about creating communities that can truly thrive." Covid-19 unexpectedly accelerated this perspective. Locked down populations rediscovered local green spaces. At the same time our connection to nature has diminished by 60% over two centuries. The pandemic became an unexpected reset button, highlighting the critical importance of accessible, high-quality green environments. But transforming cities requires more than good intentions. We need for innovative financial frameworks that recognise nature's intrinsic value. Natural capital approaches are emerging, attempting to quantify ecosystem services previously taken for granted. "We haven't been putting a monetary sign on what nature provides," he says. "We've just extracted and taken nature for granted." Plus, the economic benefits of more nature and biophilic placemaking helps provide equal access to high-quality green spaces, which we know can improve public health, reduce NHS pressures, mitigate climate impacts, and create more resilient, socially cohesive communities. Practical examples are already emerging. Projects like Manchester's Greater Manchester Environment Fund and initiatives in Copenhagen and New York demonstrate how cities can integrate nature-based solutions. In New York, green infrastructure plans showed returns ten times higher than traditional engineering approaches, at a third of the cost. The future of urban design isn't about uniformity, but about "hyper-local solutions to global system change". Each city, each neighbourhood needs its own nuanced approach, respecting local ecology and cultural distinctiveness. In addition, we should be designing public spaces that balance people, planet, and place; continuing interdisciplinary collaborations, particularly with ecologists and water engineers; and maintaining a spirit of continuous innovation and learning. Community engagement is paramount. Successful urban restoration isn't imposed from above but co-created with local residents. Emerging stewardship models, like community interest companies managing green spaces, show promising alternatives to traditional top-down management. Looking towards 2050, we have cause to be optimistic. "We've never had so many mechanisms at our disposal," he says. Regenerative design could be the bridge connecting different disciplines, creating holistic solutions to complex urban challenges. Just imagine a world where everyone has a view of nature from where they live, with high-quality green spaces within a 10-minute walk. This would fundamentally reshape our relationship with urban environments. Ludo will be speaking at the Biophilic Design Conference on 17 November, Click here to find out more and book your online and in person tickets (plus watch on catch up!): https://journalofbiophilicdesign.com/biophilic-design-conference To find out more about some of the project that Ludo was speaking about in the podcast look at: https://www.wsp.com/en-gb/hubs/future-ready-landscapeshttps://www.wsp.com/en-gb/projects/islington-council-and-wsp-explore-pathways-to-finance-nature-in-citieshttps://www.wsp.com/-/media/insights/uk/documents/wsp-biodiversity-in-the-city.pdfhttps://www.tcpa.org.uk/areas-of-work/new-towns/long-term-stewardship/https://barkingriverside.london/https://commonland.com/4-returns-framework/https://naturetownsandcities.org.uk/https://mayfieldpark.com/https://www.wsp.com/en-gb/projects/earls-court-developmenthttps://www.c40.org/case-studies/c40-good-practice-guides-copenhagen-cloudburst-management-plan/https://www.nyc.gov/site/dep/environment/cloudburst.pagehttps://www.nyc.gov/assets/dep/downloads/pdf/water/stormwater/green-infrastructure/nyc-green-infrastructure-plan-2010.pdf - key take away: “the overall cost of the Green Infrastructure Plan would be approximately $5.3 billion, $1.5 billion less than the $6.8 billion required for the Grey Strategy”.“After a 20-year period, DEP estimates that New Yorkers would receive between $139 million and $418 million in additional benefits through reduced energy bills, increased property values, and improved health”

In this insightful episode of "Father and Joe," Joe Rockey and Father Boniface Hicks delve into the complex yet enriching journey of cultivating trust and fostering meaningful relationships with ourselves, others, and God. They explore the intricacies of trust—how it's built step-by-step through integrity, dependability, and consistency, and how it's intrinsically linked to vulnerability. The hosts candidly discuss the challenges around rebuilding trust, especially for those who have experienced trauma, and highlight the importance of being open to growth in relationships.Father Boniface provides a profound perspective on how our daily, seemingly simple interactions are rooted in unexpected levels of trust. Whether navigating a complex journey through a foreign market or simply shopping at a local store, trust silently governs many aspects of our lives. Joe emphasizes that understanding trust starts from within, analyzing our past interactions, and being conscious of the behaviors that foster or hinder relational growth.Listeners are invited to envision their relationships as a canvas, where the practice of mental preparation can be as impactful as the actions themselves. Drawing parallels from sports, Joe illustrates how champions attain mastery not only through physical prowess but through mental agility—foreshadowing their moves and understanding their counterparts' strategies. This analogy extends into relational dynamics, where understanding others' preferences can significantly enhance our interactions and emotional bonds. The conversation further deepens into self-reflection's role in improving relational and spiritual lives. It highlights Pope Francis's teachings on losing touch with our hearts due to societal distractions, advocating for a slower pace that allows for introspection. The two hosts reiterate the need for reflecting on questions of identity, purpose, and divine relationship to maintain a more fulfilled and engaged life.Father Boniface and Joe eloquently conclude that just as much—or even more—growth occurs through thoughtful reflection and genuine communication. They underline that life's challenges invite us to continuously learn, adapt, and nurture our relationships spiritually and interpersonally. This episode serves as a compelling reminder that opening our hearts and minds can transform relationships, weaving trust into the very fabric of our lives. By integrating these elements into our daily practices, we not only enrich our connections with others but also create more space for a profound union with God.Tags: Spiritual Direction, Relationship Building, Trust Development, Self-Reflection, God, Faith Journey, Mental Preparation, Personal Growth, Prayer Practice, Relationship Dynamics, Emotional Intelligence, Trust in Relationships, Vulnerability, Integrity, Dependability, Spiritual Growth, Building Trust, Emotional Connection, Mindfulness, Personal Relationships, Communication Skills, Trustworthiness, Self-Awareness, Reflection, Spirituality, Overcoming Trauma, Religious Guidance, Heartfelt Conversations, Everyday Trust, Relationship Skills, Emotional Growth, Connection with God, God's Will, Christian Faith, Relationship Analysis, Spiritual Practices, Church Life, Engaging Faith, God's Teachings, Podcast SeriesHashtags: #FatherAndJoe #SpiritualDirection #Trust #RelationshipBuilding #FaithJourney #SelfReflection #PersonalGrowth #Communication #EmotionalIntelligence #TrustInRelationships #Vulnerability #Integrity #Dependability #SpiritualGrowth #Mindfulness #PrayerPractice #ConnectionWithGod #ChristianFaith #EmotionalConnection #UnderstandingOthers #GodsWill #RelationalDynamics #ReligionAndFaith #HeartfeltConversations #PersonalRelationships #SpiritualPractice #EverydayTrust #RelationshipAnalysis #SelfAwareness #GodsTeachings #FaithAndLife #FaithPodcast #ReflectiveLiving #BuildingTrust #OvercomingTrauma #EmotionalGrowth #EngagingFa

3) Eterno: Hoy celebramos a San José.

Introducing content-types A Python library to map file extensions to MIME types. Unlike other libraries, this one does not try to access the file or parse the bytes of the file or stream. It just looks at the extension. Better support than mimetypes builtin. Brian #2: Wagtail 6.4 Release notes Lots of great updates, but I want to zoom in on background tasks. 6.4 includes django-tasks which is an available implementation of DEP 0014: Background workers This proposal is accepted and this thread includes a great talk from DjangoCon Europe 2024 Why is this cool? Even though django-tasks says it's “under active development”, as long as you pin the version and test your behavior depending on this, it must be ready to use if wagtail is going for it. Don't you think? Michael #3: Build It Yourself from Armin Ronacher, sent in by Rafael Weingartner An excellent article pushing back on too many dependencies Maybe the advice of always prefer code reuse isn't that great after all? It's much much easier to solve small little problems these days due to AI. Take Postmark as an example. “It's time to have a new perspective: we should give kudos to engineers who write a small function themselves instead of hooking in a transitive web of crates. We should be suspicious of big crate graphs. Celebrated are the minimal dependencies, the humble function that just quietly does the job, the code that doesn't need to be touched for years because it was done right once.” - Armin Brian #4: Build backend popularity over time Bastian Venthur This is just for projects using pyproject.toml Apparently he did this last year as well, so we can see some trends. Results setuptools: ~50% (last year ~50%) poetry: ~30% (last year ~33%) hatchling: (percent not listed, but looks like 12-15%), (last year 10%) flit: ~5% (last year ~10%) other: (above flit now) Analysis: setuptools continues to grow in absolute numbers and maintain it's percentage. poetry declining hatchling growing flit declining Brian commentary This is not surprising to me. I generally use hatchling for more control, and setuptools for simple projects. I think we might end up with mostly setuptools and hatchling in a couple years. Extras Brian: Test & Code Archive is now all episodes on one page Old method was 30 episodes per page For something completely different NameGrapher - popularity of US names No wonder I don't meet a lot of kids named Brian Michael is #16 (#1 in 1950s - 1990s) Brian is #317 (#8 in 1970s) Joke: The long path to rejection.

Again With This: Beverly Hills, 90210 & Melrose Place

Dawson, returning from spending his whole offscreen summer in Philadelphia with Gale, ends up on a bus next to a very confident pixie-cut blonde. When she disappears after he apparently bores them both to sleep yammering about Joey, he assumes he'll never see her again. He assumes wrong, and is no match for her aggressive come-ons. Her sexual overtures while Dawson's out driving them around in Mitch's boat lead Dawson to make some reckless choices with expensive consequences; knowing this girl works at the local exotic dance establishment, Pacey gets the idea to knock off Risky Business with a stripper party at the Leery house. Through all this, Joey has alternated between parrying the unwanted attention of Rob Logan, her new boss at the marina, and regretting the way she told Dawson off in the Season 2 finale. Roomies Jen and Jack have reached a new level of platonically intimate friendship and are so adorable even Grams seems like they're giving her a cavity -- but in a fun way! Less fun: the tyranny of cheer captain Belinda McGovern, who is terrorizing her classmates with slut-shaming and fatphobia. Jen notices, apparently for the first time, and decides to fight back by trying out for the cheerleading team. But what you really want to know is whether her hair has grown back out: we're thrilled to let you know it has.
