Chris Bridges has worked as an NHS Nurse, a theatre reviewer, a columnist and now is a published author. It was his work as a nurse, coupled with his Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis, that gave him the inspiration and experience to get the novel done. The novel is 'Sick to Death', it tells the story of Emma who can't go to work because of a neurological condition. When her boyfriend won't finally leave his wife, she takes matters into her own hands. Emma is sick, but not in the way you think. WHAT A LINE!Chris talks about why he wanted to write a character with disability, where the disability wasn't simply a trope that allows other characters to get on with the plot. Yet also, how that influenced the character arc he could write. You can hear how he got into Emma's head, and told her side of a story dealing with disability. We discuss how much he thought about the genre he was writing in, how he found the crucial mid-point, and how living with M.S. affects his daily writing in ways we don't consider. You can get a copy of the book at uk.bookshop.org/shop/writersroutineSupport the show at - patreon.com/writersroutineko-fi.com/writersroutineSubscribe to the newsletter - writersroutine.substack.com@writerspodwritersroutine.com Hosted on Acast. This week, we're chatting to Robert Whitlow, prolific writer of over 20 bestselling novels. His new one is 'Guilty Until Innocent', a legal thriller that looks an an old case being reopened, and the two lawyers who have to prove the convicted's innocence against the odds. His debut novel, 'The List', was adapted into a successful movie starring Malcolm McDowell. In fact, four of Robert's novels have been adapted for the big screen, and Robert still divides his time between writing and working as a local attorney. You can hear how he seperates his day, energy and creativity for that, and why he thinks the secret is to relax and be consistent... it's to discover your 'writing bio-rhythm'Faith plays a huge part in Robert's work, and we figure out why that is, how organic it can ever be, and whether he's bothered about how a reader's opinion towards religion might change with his writing. It's led him to win the prestigious 'Christy Award for Contemporary Writing' in 2001. He reveals why he loves editing, how he wrestles characters back to his ideas, and why he needs a few drafts to really figure out who his protagonist is.Get a copy of the novel - uk.bookshop.org/shop/writersroutineSupport the show -patreon.com/writersroutineko-fi.com/writersroutineSubscribe to the weekly newsletter - writersroutine.substack.com@writerspodwritersroutine.com Hosted on Acast. A few weeks ago, we had the pleasure of sitting down with the incredible Daniel Hurst, an Amazon #1 bestselling author known for his gripping psychological thrillers. Now, we're excited to make the full interview available to everyone! If you haven't already, you can watch the full conversation on YouTube or listen to it on our podcast.Daniel's journey from a passionate storyteller to a full-time bestselling author is nothing short of inspiring. In our interview, he shared insights into his writing process, the challenges he faced breaking into the industry, and his thoughts on the evolving landscape of publishing. From Early Struggles to Full-Time WritingHurst's love for storytelling began in childhood. Growing up in the northwest of England, he enjoyed creating stories and always had a vivid imagination. However, like many aspiring writers, he struggled to see a viable career path in writing and spent years working a ‘sensible' job while writing in his spare time.Eventually, his persistence paid off. By 2021, he transitioned into full-time writing—a decision that led to a string of bestsellers, including The Doctor's Wife, The Passenger, and The Couple's Revenge. His ability to craft fast-paced, unputdownable thrillers has earned him a loyal readership and significant success in the publishing world. The Writing Process and Keeping the MomentumOne of the most fascinating parts of our discussion was Daniel's approach to writing. Unlike many writers who spend years perfecting a single manuscript, Hurst thrives on momentum. He emphasized the importance of consistency, treating writing like a full-time job, and producing stories efficiently without overcomplicating the process. His advice to aspiring authors? Don't wait for the perfect moment—just start writing. Discipline and routine play a crucial role in staying productive, and he believes that overthinking often kills creativity. The Publishing Journey: Self-Publishing vs. Independent PublishingInitially, Daniel took the self-publishing route, a decision driven by impatience with traditional publishing's lengthy timelines. By doing so, he gained valuable experience in marketing, reader engagement, and rapid storytelling. His self-published success eventually led to partnerships with independent publishers, allowing him to reach an even wider audience.Hurst believes that while traditional publishing still holds prestige, the accessibility of self-publishing has made it an excellent path for writers willing to learn the business side of the industry.Engaging with Readers and What's NextOne of Daniel's biggest strengths is his ability to connect with readers. He frequently interacts with fans on social media and values their feedback. This direct engagement, he says, has shaped his storytelling and made him a better writer. As for what's next, Daniel has multiple books in the pipeline with Bookouture, with more thrilling stories set to hit the shelves in the coming months. His ability to consistently deliver compelling narratives ensures that his readers always have something to look forward to.Watch or Listen to the Full InterviewThis conversation was filled with inspiration, advice, and behind-the-scenes insights into the life of a bestselling thriller author. If you're a writer, a reader, or just someone who loves a good success story, you won't want to miss it!

After rave reviews of his debut novel, EFM Matthew Becker has two more books coming soon. In this episode, find out how an academic mathematician with a past work in missile tracking and  COVID test kit distribution analysis became an EFM and followed a secret dream to become an author. Like most avid readers, Matthew believed he could write something pretty decent. Unlike the rest of us, he actually followed through on that, writing several novels before getting his first contract and agent. Matthew explains how advanced math education taught him critical thinking skills rather than just specific techniques, and how he uses those to outline and organize plots, track manuscript submissions and record his late night and midday inspirations. In his debut novel, the wife of a congressional staffer goes missing amidst a mass shooting, Run, both a stand alone and part of a trilogy, is the story of someone much like all EFMs, an everyday hero in extraordinary circumstances. His second book, Don't Look Down, is available for pre-order now.------Matthew Becker is a thriller author, with his debut novel RUN described as "a must read" and "wicked smart and exceptionally fun." Justice David W. Ellis has served on the Illinois Appellate Court for the 1st District for nearly 10 years. But readers may know him better as author David Ellis, writer of more than a dozen legal thrillers. Ellis had enjoyed creative writing as a youth, he tells the ABA Journal's Lee Rawles in this episode of The Modern Law Library. But during his college and law school years, he was focused solely on his legal career path. It wasn't until he had been in practice for a few years that this changed. During a vacation at the beach, he suddenly decided that he was going to write a novel—and once that goal was set, he worked relentlessly towards it. And in 2002, he won a prestigious Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America for that first novel, Line of Vision.  Both branches of Ellis's career have seen tremendous returns. He made national news in 2009 as the prosecutor of the impeachment of Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich before the state senate. He was the youngest-serving justice in 2014 when he joined the Illinois Appellate Court for the 1st District, which serves Chicago and Cook County. And along the way, he published 11 novels, including the four-book Jason Kolarich series. He was a finalist for the ABA Journal-sponsored Harper Lee Prize for Legal Fiction in 2012 and 2013. He has also co-written nine books with James Patterson, the latest of which (Lies He Told Me) will be released in September. In this episode, Ellis and Rawles discuss his July release, The Best Lies. The germ of an idea that became The Best Lies started off with the notion of a main character who was a diagnosed pathological liar. When the book opens, Leo Balanoff, a criminal defense attorney in Chicago, has just been arrested for murder. Police have collected DNA and fingerprints at the scene that are a match for a college-era bar fight Leo was charged for, and the victim had an ugly history with one of Leo's clients. Over the course of The Best Lies, twists and turns across multiple timelines and through multiple points of view begin to reveal what really happened. Ellis weaves a tale combining corporate espionage, violin concertos, police corruption and the Estonian mob.  Ellis also discusses his writing process, his 3:30 a.m. wake-up time, the similarities in his creative and legal writing, and how his judicial ethics concerns sometimes impact his editorial decisions.

Justice David W. When she's not writing, she's walking the winding trails in her backyard or she's on a tennis court laughing and providing job security for her coach. BROKEN BAYOU - July 1, 2024 In this debut thriller, a troubled child psychologist returns to a small Louisiana town to protect her secrets but winds up having to protect her life. Dr. Willa Watters is a prominent child psychologist at the height of her career. But when a viral video of a disastrous television interview puts her reputation on the line, Willa retreats to Broken Bayou, the town where she spent most of her childhood summers. There she visits her aunts' old house and discovers some of her unstable mother's belongings still languishing in the attic―dusty mementos harboring secrets of her harrowing past. Willa's hopes for a respite are quickly crushed, not only by what she finds in that attic but also by what's been found in the bayou. With waters dropping due to drought, mysterious barrels containing human remains have surfaced, alongside something else from Willa's past, something she never thought she'd see again. Divers, police, and media flood the area, including a news reporter gunning for Willa and Travis Arceneaux―a local deputy and old flame. Willa's fate seems eerily tied to the murders. And with no one to trust, she must use her wits to stay above water and make it out alive.
