In 2005, when London schoolgirl Jade LB was just 13, she got a computer for her birthday and began writing a fictional story on it – the sometimes raunchy, sometimes disturbing adventures of a 17-year-old girl called Keisha. Written in a mixture of text language, slang and patois, the story became legendary and was passed around playgrounds all over London. But when she first put it online with a promise to post a new chapter every two weeks, Jade had no idea of the impact it would have, or how Keisha would shape her life for years to come. 51: Sugababes Part 4 - "Sweet 7" to 'Freedom' | 2000s Pop Music Podcast

Right Back At Ya!

Babedom, you wanna Get Sexy with your temporary tattoos, don't you? We couldn't possibly leave you hanging without a "Sweet 7" appreciation episode. Joel and David are here to celebrate this glossy and often-sidelined last Sugababes album (to date) and the final single from Amelle, Heidi and Jade: 'Freedom'. Your favourite 2000s pop defenders pick things up in the rollercoaster year that was 2009 when Keisha Buchanan, Heidi Range and Amelle Berrabah jump head first into a massive new era, after signing a US deal with Jay Z's label. Back with a brash, maximalist club banger - 'Get Sexy' - the trio looked set to prove haters wrong when the Bruno Mars-produced single shot to No.2. But a sudden line-up change altered the course of history with Keisha dramatically ousted and replaced by UK Eurovision queen Jade Ewen, who was midway promoting her sultry solo single 'My Man'. Despite the challenges, Sugababes 4.0 still turned out two UK Top 10 singles - 'About A Girl' and 'Wear My Kiss' - and delivered a major pop girl group album. It may not be a quintessential 'Sugababes album' but Joel and David can guarantee you'll find something to love here from 'Wait For You' to 'Thank You For The Heartbreak' and 'She's A Mess'! Goes without saying but nothing but absolute love and respect to all six 'Babes. We cannot wait to see the Origibabes - Mutya, Keisha and Siobhan - headline Mighty Hoopla in 2022! Dubbed the social justice manifesto, Until I Am Free, by author Keisha N. Blain, is a unique opportunity to hear about life from the perspective of a working, impoverished and disabled Black woman. Blain, an award-winning historian, details the life and accomplishments of Fannie Lou Hamer, a civil rights activist too often forgotten in the narrative of racial justice. Defying the layers of marginalization that threatened to hush her powerful words, Hamer is held by Blain in the same esteem as her contemporaries Rosa Parks and MLK. Through Blain, Hamer's message is given new life in an age where the same issues remain pertinent. At INFORUM Blain will peel back the layers of Fannie Lou Hamer—layers that ostensibly would have taken power away from her but instead became the very source from which she drew it. Can we bring yesterday back around, pop fans? Because the wait is finally over for one of our most requested episodes yet: Sugababes Part 3! Casually arriving hot on the heels of the Babes' 20th anniversary reissue of "One Touch" and news of them headlining Mighty Hoopla next year. Join Joel and David as we jump back to 2007 to celebrate one of Britain's greatest girl groups, the Sugababes, in their proper huge mainstream era "Change", which saw them top the album charts and score their sixth No.1 single with 'About You Now' - a mere six months after their last joint No.1 single with Girls Aloud for Comic Relief: 'Walk This Way'. What a year! As well as all your "Change" highlights like 'Denial', 'My Love Is Pink' and 'Never Gonna Dance Again', the Right Back At Ya! boys also reminisce on Keisha, Heidi and Amelle's iconic live gigs, promo appearances and music videos.  We also shine a light on their often sidelined sixth album "Catfights and Spotlights", which showed off a brilliantly sophisticated vintage soul/funk sound. From the Boots anthem 'Girls' and 'No Can Do' through to fan faves like 'Side Chick' and 'You On A Good Day', there's something for everyone here. You'll know this from Parts 1 and 2 of our Sugababes episodes earlier this year but Right Back At Ya! is all about showing love and putting respect on all six 'Babes. Our guest today on The Brett Allan Show is the amazingly talented Wilder Yari. They can be seen currently on the CW's retelling of "The 4400" streaming now. We discuss how they landed the role, early career starts, the importance of equal representation in Hollywood, favorite movies, keys to success, their writing career and much more. Enjoy! Wilder can next be seen in The CW's highly anticipated sci-fi drama series, “4400,” a reimagining of the 2004 USA Network series. The new version follows 4400 overlooked, undervalued or otherwise marginalized people who vanished without a trace over the last hundred years and are all returned in an instant, having not aged a day and with no memory of what happened to them. As the government races to analyze the potential threat and contain the story, the 4400 themselves must grapple with the fact that they've been returned with a few…upgrades, and the increasing likelihood that they were all brought back for a specific reason. Wilder shines as Agent Jessica Tanner who is a part of the Department of Homeland Security and working on the investigation into the 4400. She is dating Keisha (Ireon Roach), a parole officer who is also called in as part of the government response. Confident, good-hearted and a consummate professional at work, Jessica is glad to be working with Keisha and is baffled and uneasy about the sudden appearance of all these apparently "kidnapped" people. Wilder was also recently seen on the second season of Showtime's hit drama series “The L Word: Generation Q.” On the film side, they completed production on Kryzz Gautier's (“Gordita Chronicles”) sci-fi short film, “Keep Delete,” release date TBA. In 2019, they starred in the dramedy short “Treacle” which premiered at the 2019 BFI Flare: London LGBTIQ+ Film Festival and made the festival rounds over the next two years. As a writer, Wilder recently channeled their experience as a descendent of the Iranian diaspora into their first full-length feature script, “neem-rooni,” which was selected as a semi-finalist for the Sundance Institute's 2021 Creative Producing Lab. Wilder directed a short version of the script in spring 2021 and hopes to shoot the full-length version in 2022. Also on the directing front, they have directed music videos for a variety of artists including pop punk band Potty Mouth, folk duo Fawn, R&B artist Najeary, and their own band Poor Baby. Wilder has been recognized in outlets like Out, Refinery29 and NPR's All Things Considered for their work in this area. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY in a multicultural family, Wilder discovered their love of acting while being enrolled in a community theater company as a child. They went on to study at and graduate from the prestigious LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts in Manhattan. During their time in the BA program at Emerson College, Wilder was given the opportunity to explore directing and writing, and continued to expand on those skills after graduating and moving to Los Angeles to pursue acting full-time. Wilder identifies as non-binary and transgender.Send us an email!openmicguest@gmail.comBe sure to follow us on social media for all the latest podcast updates!Twittertwitter.com/@brettallanshowIGinstagram.com/brettallanshowFacebookFacebook.com/brettallanshowNOW ON YOUTUBE!https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChHL...

How deeply do you understand the critical legacy of Fannie Lou Hamer? Dr. Keisha N. Blain is a historian and author of her latest book, “Until I Am Free: Fannie Lou Hamer's Enduring Message to America,” and she shows how Hamer's words still speak truth to power in our society and what that actually means. Dr. Blain familiarizes us with Hamer, who didn't know she could vote until she was 44 years old, but eventually found herself on stage at the Democratic National Convention in 1964. But she also faced tensions within the democratic party and experienced a lot of difficult resistance to her radical honesty. But her dedication to her home state of Mississippi and to the movement are still evident today, as her message endures. The average height of a female in the UK is 5ft 3in. What is life like for women at the other end of the spectrum, especially when it comes to dating? Jessica Creighton is joined by the author of Get Real, Sarah Ivens, who at 6ft would be introduced to dates as 'Queen Kong' or 'Miss Stretchy', and married at 6 ft 3 in in a pair of diamanté heels; and Andrea Hubert, 6ft 1in whose creative comebacks about her height paved the way to her becoming a comedian. Normally it would take a playwright like Lucy Kirkwood two years to write a play and get it onto the stage. However the relentless news of violence against women and the abuse of police powers in recent weeks compelled her to script a thirty minute piece called Maryland in just a few days and send it to the Royal Court Theatre in London. That was three weeks ago...two weeks ago it opened on stage. The Royal Court's Artistic Director, Vicky Featherstone joins Jessica Creighton to explain why. After struggling with her mental health whilst part of girl-band Little Mix and then quitting late last year, Jesy Nelson has just launched her solo career with a video for her single 'Boyz' that's been criticised for 'blackfishing'. So what is that and why is it problematic? Jess is joined by Leah Mahon, journalist at the Voice online. The Woman's Hour poll to mark our 75th anniversary found the place where women feel most unequal is in the home - specifically in terms of housework. 75% of the women said the division of chores wasn't fair but interestingly it was only named as the fifth most important area in which to achieve equality. Jessica talks to Professor Ann Oakley whose seminal book The Sociology of Housework looked at these issues way back in the seventies and also by Professor Rosie Cox who has written a number of books on gender roles. In 2005 the story of Keisha the Sket started being shared by young people on a now defunct early internet platform. The story is told in energetic street slang. Keisha, 17, lives in Hackney, London. She's lively and funny - she is also preyed upon. She wants and enjoys sex and is looking for love but she is sexualised by the men and boys around her. Her lack of control of her life gets her into dangerous situations and the word 'sket' - promiscuous girl or woman - follows her around. It's been called a classic of Black British culture and is now being published for the first time in book form. Jade LB began writing Keisha's story when she was only 13 and joins Jessica to talk about her creation and the mixed feelings she has had about it over the years.

Sam and Emma host Keisha Blain, Associate Professor of History at the University of Pittsburgh, to discuss her recent book Until I Am Free: Fannie Lou Hamer's Enduring Message to America, on how Hamer's long life led up to a final decade and a half of incredibly influential activism. Professor Blain walks Emma and Sam back to the 1920s and the first years of Fannie Lou Hamer's life, growing up on a sharecropping plantation in Mississippi where she was confronted with, beyond the labor abuses of the plantation, constant racial violence, exploitation, and coercion of her community. Specifically, they reflect on the explicit mob violence she saw with the lynching of tenant farmer Joe Pullum, alongside the general poverty and hunger that plagued those around her, before Keisha dives into the breaking point that set up Fannie Lou's eventual dip into non-violent action; her forced sterilization at the hands of a white doctor supposedly removing a tumor. Following this incredibly traumatizing experience, Hamer eventually heard talk of a Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) meeting at her local church, at which the public abuses of her community, and their unconstitutional nature, are crystallized for her. Next, Professor Blain brings Emma and Sam along Hamer's life as an activist, organizing for voter registration, from workshops to actually attempting to register in the face of civilian and police brutality, and arrest, just sixty years ago, and they work their way up to her speech at the Credentials Committee in Atlantic City which had even President LBJ on his heels. Keisha then walks through the influence of Hamer's activism today, looking particularly at the story of Breonna Taylor and Kate Young's use of social media to force the mainstream media to acknowledge her name. They wrap up the interview by touching on Fannie Lou Hamer's consciousness around the use of class and poverty to reinforce white supremacy, and looking at how her role as a key civil rights activist is obscured through the whitewashing of history. Sam and Emma also discuss the Right's commitment to the pro-COVID stance. And in the Fun Half: Emma and Sam discuss the brand new 2010 Republican talking point on the Democrats'… dismantling of Medicare? They cover the confirmation of the Boogaloo Boys' classic leftist organizing tactic of actively sowing chaos, shooting up buildings, and committing arson to undermine leftist protests, touching on the slow and steady replacement of election officials in the shadow of the Right's “Big Lie” as well, before Bro Flamingo fittingly calls in to talk cults. Charlie Kirk talks Senator Schumer's kinks, Jay from Chicago discusses the de-normalization of Obama's violent administration, Matt Walsh and Emma share some misinformation on extinction events, and the crew covers some updates from the Kellogg's strikes.
