Sebastian Junger is an award-winning journalist, a New York Times bestselling author, and an Academy Award–nominated filmmaker. Regular listeners are surely familiar with his work, as I've mentioned his books a ridiculous number of times on this podcast over the years—especially his book "Tribe," which has had a lasting influence on how I think about community, purpose, and the kinds of experiences that give people meaning. So for Episode 300, I was excited to sit down with Sebastian for a real, in-person conversation. Sebastian is the author of "The Perfect Storm," "War," "Tribe," "Freedom," and most recently "In My Time of Dying," and he's spent decades reporting from war zones and writing about how humans behave under extreme pressure. In this conversation, we start with his early experience with NOLS and use that as a jumping-off point to explore a theme that runs through much of his work: why small groups facing real adversity create such strong bonds, and why those experiences often feel more meaningful than anything in modern, comfortable life. From there, we get into boxing, jiu-jitsu, and the idea that environments with real consequences tend to strip away status and surface-level differences, leaving people to be judged on effort, character, and how they show up for others. We also spend a good amount of time on his recent powerful book, "In My Time of Dying"—including the near-death experience that led to it, how he processed it afterward, and what it changed about how he thinks about fear, mortality, and what actually matters in life. We talk about parenting, contentment versus happiness, and how different phases of life demand different kinds of attention and energy. And toward the end, we get into writing, his new Substack project (that I highly recommend), smartphones, and why he's chosen to opt out of many versions of modern technology, including social media. This one covers a lot of ground, but it all ties back to a few core questions: what makes a life feel meaningful, what we lose when things get too easy, and how to stay connected to the people around us. We recorded this in Aspen, the morning before Sebastian was scheduled to speak at the Aspen Institute, and I'm grateful he took the time to do it—especially on a such a busy day. “Wicked Problems,” hosted by Richard Delevan, returns after a long hiatus and links escalating repression - newly including climate activists - with a high-stakes by-election in Greater Manchester. It opens with concerns about confrontational protest being met with violence and political repression, alongside Nigel Farage's Reform proposing a “UK deportation command,” expanding detention with “no chance of bail,” and “detention will mean deportation.” Devin cites New York Times reporting that the FBI has begun targeting climate activists, including people who have not protested in years, and frames this as part of a broader effort to quash dissent.Professor Dana R. Fisher of American University discusses what she describes as a “perfect storm” in the US: federal occupations of cities (highlighting Minneapolis), the murder of two American citizens while they were bearing witness to ICE actions, the president getting rid of the endangerment finding underlying US climate policy, and FBI investigations focusing on the "radical fringe" of the climate movement. Fisher argues these groups are “low hanging fruit” because their confrontational tactics (e.g., throwing paint, smearing food, blocking traffic, bird-dogging elected officials) are widely unpopular, making it easier for authorities to target them first as part of a broader slide toward autocracy that also threatens media freedoms. She says repression and violence against peaceful activists historically mobilize larger protests, even as it can lead to persecution, jail, and martyrdom. "I don't think a lot of people think blood and weather go together," Deb explains. However, when roads become impassable and schools close—locations where many blood drives take place—the impact on blood collection becomes immediate and severe. Even more alarming, a third of Americans don't realize that if people don't donate, hospitals may not have blood available when they need it. Beyond the Three-Day Rule The recent storm also shattered conventional wisdom about emergency preparedness. Like I always share with my clients, I'd rather see you make lots of money successfully selling a few products than make a little money trying to sell “all the things.” 2. Test the waters to achieve success In her early days of business, Hannah cast a wide net, eager to gauge the reception of her products by selling at lots of markets. Unsure of how her offerings would be received, she opted for quantity over quality. However, as both her business and personal brand evolved, Hannah became more discerning. As she gained a deeper understanding of her target audience, she became better at identifying the best market venues. Today, aside from carefully curated pop-ups aligned with her brand, the only market she sells at is St. Louis's largest market. This strategic shift ensures maximum return on investment, both financially and in terms of personal fulfillment. Hannah acknowledges that navigating the market landscape has been a journey of trial and error, a quintessential experience for any small business owner. 3. Create a business that works for YOUR life, on YOUR terms Hannah pointed out the dual nature of entrepreneurship: challenging yet inherently enjoyable. It's a sentiment that deeply resonates with me. As Hannah points out, entrepreneurial enjoyment isn't automatic; it requires deliberate effort. Consequently, crews found themselves battling conditions that required heavy-duty equipment rather than standard plows attached to pickup trucks. Frederick County spans an impressive 417 square miles—a fact that continues to surprise even longtime residents like Janet. This vast territory includes not just subdivisions and business centers, but also remote gravel roads serving just a handful of homes. Furthermore, VDOT faced the challenge of relying on subcontractors during this emergency. While year-round VDOT employees operated the heavy-duty equipment with expertise, some subcontracted drivers proved less skilled at the delicate work of snow removal. As Captain Gosnell diplomatically noted, "You can have a shovel and 40 acres—doesn't mean you can grow potatoes." Safety First: Practical Tips for Residents As residents continue digging out, Captain Gosnell emphasized several critical safety concerns. First and foremost, people attempting to clear their mailboxes often stand in active roadways with their backs to oncoming traffic—a dangerous practice that puts them at serious risk. Instead, he recommends wearing bright, visible clothing and remaining aware of traffic patterns. Additionally, pedestrians forced to walk on roadways due to snow-covered sidewalks should always face oncoming traffic. This simple adjustment allows walkers to see potential hazards and react accordingly, rather than being surprised from behind. The Reality of Emergency Response The storm's impact extended far beyond inconvenient commutes. First responders continued answering calls in areas where plows hadn't reached at all. In one tragic example, a house fire in the Gore area became a total loss partly because the nearby pond—a crucial water source—had frozen over, and the accessible water level dropped too low for effective firefighting. These challenges underscore why emergency declarations matter. As Captain Gosnell pointed out, the state of emergency wasn't declared so people could venture out for pretty snow pictures. Rather, it ensured that those who truly needed help could receive it, even under the most challenging conditions. Looking Ahead: School Zone Speed Cameras Shifting gears from winter weather, Captain Gosnell announced that Frederick County's school zone speed cameras will go live late next week. The rollout includes a generous 30-day warning period during which violators receive warning notices rather than actual citations. The system operates with built-in safeguards. Cameras only activate when school zone lights flash, and they ignore vehicles traveling nine miles per hour or less over the posted limit. Only when drivers exceed the limit by 10 mph or more does the system capture their violation. Importantly, human oversight remains central to the process. Every potential citation passes through law enforcement for verification, ensuring that technical glitches—such as lights flashing during school delays—don't result in unfair tickets. As Captain Gosnell emphasized, this isn't a money grab but rather a safety initiative with generous parameters designed to protect students. Operators of aging F-class units face a narrowing window to plan for rotor life extensions as supply chains tighten and demand surges. The late 1990s and early 2000s marked a frenetic period in American power generation. Deregulation opened the floodgates for independent power producers racing to bring quick-build gas turbine plants online. GE's 7FA and 7EA units became go‑to resources for this expansion, with the manufacturer more than tripling its annual heavy‑duty gas turbine production capacity to meet surging demand. Now, a quarter-century later, those turbines are approaching critical end-of-life thresholds—just as an artificial intelligence (AI)-driven surge in electricity demand is pushing them harder than ever. Industry experts warn that operators who fail to plan for rotor life extensions could find themselves in serious trouble. “If you're not thinking two to three years down the road on your rotor, then you're already behind, because that's how long it's going to take to manufacture those wheels,” Jason Wheeler, General Manager of Gas Turbine Rotor Repairs at MD&A, said as a guest on The POWER Podcast. A Perfect Storm of Constraints The urgency stems from a confluence of factors that have compressed the window for action. The 7FA fleet, which was deployed en masse during what industry veterans call “the bubble,” is now reaching the hour and cycle limits that the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) established for critical rotor components. At the same time, the power generation sector is experiencing a demand renaissance driven by data center construction and electrification. Dave Fernandes, MD&A's Gas Turbine Program Manager, experienced the original boom firsthand as a GE field engineer specializing in 7F and 9F units from 1996 to 2001. He sees important differences between then and now. “There seems to be a lot more concrete reasons and a much stronger foundation for this current bubble than the previous one that took place two and a half decades ago,” Fernandes said. “There are a lot of things that are all stacking up at the same time that put more of an emphasis on getting out in front of extending the life of your current assets now, probably more than ever.” Supply chains have become particularly challenging. The specialized superalloy forgings required for turbine wheels are produced by a limited number of facilities worldwide, and those forging houses are simultaneously serving aerospace, military, and new power generation equipment markets. “You're going to be competing with those new unit sales across various industries in an attempt to get in line with what is perceived from some angles as higher priorities,” Fernandes explained. “That further complicates the scenario that the customer base is facing when they're trying to extend the rotor life of their existing assets.”

This is an audio essay from my SubStack, Process This. ⁠You can head over here to read or watch the entire essay.⁠ In this episode, we explore Paul Tillich's largely forgotten 1933 work The Socialist Decision, written as Hitler rose to power and costing Tillich his professorship and homeland. Here, I explore what it reveals about the current crisis of American Christianity. Tillich argued that authentic human existence requires holding two roots in tension: the "powers of origin" (belonging, tradition, community) and the "prophetic demand" (justice, critique, openness to the stranger). When we collapse into one or the other, we get either authoritarian tribalism or rootless abstraction, and Tillich saw both failures at work in Weimar Germany. The parallels to our moment are striking: white Christian nationalism offers powerful symbols of belonging without prophetic self-criticism, while progressive Christianity has often provided critique without the embodied community and sacred symbols that move the human heart (something I explored here in The Perfect Storm). Tillich's prescription—what he called "theonomy"—charts a third way: a faith rooted in Scripture, sacrament, and particular community yet free because all these point beyond themselves to a God no finite form can capture. This essay was inspired by two recent Substack posts from two of my regular reads, Tony Jones' What the Hell is Going On and Robert Wright's Some useful Trump-Hitler comparisons (in light of Minneapolis and Venezuela). Tony ends his post by saying, “I don't know what will replace Christendom as our moral framework... Some days — and today is one of those days — I fear that we're too fragmented to come back together under any single umbrella of morality.” Tony and I had a rather lengthy text exchange about it, and in it, I said, “It seems as we lose the cultural and ethical inertia of Christendom, Evangelicals get mean, and Mainline Protestants turn to vapid nostalgia.” As I was doing dishes and ruminating, I thought of Paul Tillich's The Socialist Decision, an often-neglected work, and found it helpful in processing the current moment.
