Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022 brought a tragic close to a thirty-year period of history that began with the collapse of the Soviet Union and the reopening of Russia to the West after six decades of Soviet isolation. The opening lasted for three tumultuous decades and ended with a new closing, driven by the Ukrainian war, the imposition of Western sanctions, and the Russian responses to them. In Perfect Storm: Russia's Failed Economic Opening, the Hurricane of War and Sanctions, and the Uncertain Future (Oxford University Press, 2025), Russia analyst Thane Gustafson reinterprets the story of Russia's failed opening to the West, focusing on its economic, technological, and social aspects, and the role they played in its ultimate failure. These parallel events are essential for understanding what happened and what went wrong. Yet they have received much less attention than the military and geopolitical aspects of the current conflict. Gustafson tells the story of the West's entry into Russia, the arrival of Russians into the West, and the conflicting emotions and responses these aroused on both sides, contributing to the ultimate breakdown of relations and the unprecedented hurricane of Western sanctions. The book concludes with an examination of possible futures under a new generation of leaders. A measured and nuanced account of the evolution of Russia's economic relations with the world, Perfect Storm illuminates the longer history of Russia's opening to the West, from its achievements and disappointments to the complexity of the post-invasion sanctions regime and Russia's responses to them. Aug 28, 2025 Remarks by António Guterres,  Secretary-General of the United Nations,  on the situation in Gaza. Dear Members of the media, I am about to brief the Security Council on Haiti.  The humanitarian situation is appalling, but there are faint glimmers of hope. I will urge the Security Council and the international community to step up for the people of Haiti at this pivotal time.  I also want to say a word about the unfolding tragedy that is Gaza.  Unbelievably, civilians are facing yet another deadly escalation. Israel's initial steps to militarily take over Gaza City signals a new and dangerous phase. Expanded military operations in Gaza City will have devastating consequences. Hundreds of thousands of civilians -- already exhausted and traumatized -- would be forced to flee yet again, plunging families into even deeper peril. This must stop.  At the same time, we have seen yet more unconscionable Israeli strikes – including earlier this week at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis.  One attack was followed by another – killing civilians, including medical personnel and journalists who were carrying out their essential work.  All with the world watching. I know so many of the reporters here – along with us – have lost dear colleagues. These attacks are part of an endless catalogue of horrors.  There must be accountability. Gaza is piled with rubble, piled with bodies, and piled with examples of what may be serious violations of international law. Hostages taken by Hamas and other groups must be released and the atrocious treatment they have been forced to endure must stop. Civilians must be protected. Let's be clear:  The levels of death and destruction in Gaza are without parallel in recent times. Famine is no longer a looming possibility -- it is a present-day catastrophe. People are dying from hunger. Families are being torn apart by displacement and despair. Pregnant women are facing unimaginable risks. And the systems that sustain life -- food, water, healthcare – have been systematically dismantled.   These are the facts on the ground. And they are the result of deliberate decisions that defy basic humanity. Israel, as the occupying Power, has clear obligations. It must ensure the provision of food, water, medicine, and other essentials. It must agree to and facilitate far greater humanitarian access. It must protect civilians and civilian infrastructure. And it must end the destruction of that which is indispensable for the survival of the civilian population. The International Court of Justice has given binding provisional measures. These include the obligation to take all steps to ensure unfettered humanitarian and medical assistance to Palestinians throughout Gaza -- without delay and in full cooperation with the United Nations. These measures must be implemented -- fully and immediately. The UN and our partners are doing all we can, often at great personal risk.  Indeed, 366 UN personnel have tragically been killed. Day after day, our efforts are being blocked, delayed, and denied. This is unacceptable. In the West Bank, the situation is also profoundly alarming.  Military operations, settler violence, demolitions, and discriminatory policies are driving displacement and deepening vulnerability. The relentless expansion of settlements is fracturing communities and cutting off access to vital resources. The recent approval of a plan for the construction of thousands of settlements in the E1 area would effectively separate the northern and southern West Bank – an existential threat to the two-state solution. I repeat:  the Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, have been established – and are being maintained -- in violation of international law.    Israel must cease such actions and comply with its obligations.  There is no military solution to the conflict. I appeal once again for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, unfettered humanitarian access across Gaza, and the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages. Starvation of the civilian population must never be used as a method of warfare. Civilians must be protected. Humanitarian access must be unimpeded. No more excuses.  No more obstacles.  No more lies. From Canada The federal government is improving access to our culture and ensuring that arts organizations can leverage the latest technology to showcase the talents, innovation and ideas that strengthen Canada. On a June night several years ago, Sebastian Junger, bestselling author of The Perfect Storm and co-director of the Oscar-nominated documentary Restrepo, lay on an operating table, dying. An undiagnosed aneurysm in his pancreatic artery had ruptured, flooding his abdominal cavity with blood. His odds of survival were between 10 and 20 percent. "I said, 'Doc, you've got to hurry. You're losing me right now. I'm going.'" This near-death experience inspired him to embark on a scientific, philosophical, and profoundly personal exploration of what happens after we die. Dr. Tony Ebel breaks down the real root causes of developmental delays that go far beyond what traditional pediatricians and even most early intervention specialists address. He reveals that one in six children face developmental delays, often triggered by what he calls "the perfect storm" - a combination of early life stressors including pregnancy stress and birth interventions. Dr. Ebel explains how children get stuck in "fight or flight" mode instead of growth and development mode, affecting everything from motor skills to speech, behavior, and social development. He emphasizes that developmental delays aren't due to genetics, bad luck, or bad parenting, but rather neurological stress that can be identified and addressed at its root cause.Key Topics & Timestamps([00:00:00]) - The Hidden Crisis - One in six children face developmental delays, and there's a crucial missing piece most doctors overlook([00:04:00]) - The Therapy Plateau Problem - Why families often get stuck despite doing all the right therapies and interventions([00:06:00]) - Sequence Over Timeline - Why the order of development matters more than hitting milestones at specific ages([00:09:00]) - Growth vs. Protection Mode - The key concept that children can't be in growth and protection mode simultaneously([00:10:00]) - The Perfect Storm - How maternal stress and birth interventions create neurological stress in developing children([00:11:00]) - The Vagus Nerve Connection - How birth trauma impacts the brainstem and controls development, behavior, and communication-- Follow us on Socials: Instagram: @pxdocs Facebook: Dr. Tony Ebel & The PX Docs Network Youtube: The PX Docs For more information, visit PXDocs.com to read informative articles about the power of Neurologically-Focused Chiropractic Care. What happens when a defiant chronicler and an idealist revolutionary converge in the playground that is India's freedom struggle? Urdu newspaper Pratap, launched in pre-partition India, was a torchbearer against the British Raj. The man who publicly defended it against colonial censorship was none other than Jawaharlal Nehru. The pen picked up by freedom fighter Virendra, the paper's editor and the founder's son who once walked shoulder to shoulder with stalwarts like Bhagat Singh was equally fearless despite threats by the imperial government, Indira Gandhi's Emergency and a parcel bomb sent to Pratap's office during terrorism in Punjab. Virendra was first arrested in the historic Saunders murder case. He was also in jail with Bhagat Singh the day the legendary revolutionary was hanged, sharing a rare first-hand witness account. In Independent India, too footsteps filled Pratap and its editors with dread and terror. Pratap: A Defiant Newspaper is a timely reminder of the ethos of a struggle, a template for speaking truth to power at all costs. It is the story of a perfect storm. The book is written by Virendra's son, distinguished editor Chander Mohan and journalist granddaughter Jyotsna Mohan. Jyotsna and Azeezullah Baig will be in conversation with Maya Sharma. There will be a Q&A session with the audience. In this episode of BIC Talks, Jyotsna Mohan and Azeezullah Baig will be in conversation with Maya Sharma. Everybody knows the world of technology is changing on a massive scale; in the federal community, there is a similar seismic change, but it has to do with policy, not graphics chips. In 2020, the Department of Defense aimed to ensure its suppliers had a reasonable level of cyber protection and released the first version of the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC). In subsequent years, CMMC became a “nice to have” rather than a mandate. COVID-19 drastically increased the number of remote users, federal technology was moving to the edge, and malicious actors continued to expand their attacks unremittingly. As a result of this “Perfect Storm,” regulators at the DoD have gotten serious about CMMC compliance. In today's interview, we sat down with two CMMC experts and discussed some of the challenges associated with completing the CMMC requirements. Fortreum's Ben Scudera mentions that as many as 300,000 companies may be looking at CMMC compliance. While individual companies can read the requirements, there can be misunderstandings. For example, if a company tries to define Controlled Unclassified Information, it may cast too wide a net or too narrow a net. If they are audited, the entire concept of scoping CUI can become a holdup for certification. Early versions of CMMC allowed companies to review their capabilities and report themselves. Today's CMMC transition is from self-attestation to external audits. These audits are challenging, with only 70 C3PAOs available to support 80,000 companies that require level 2 compliance. The process is complex, requiring detailed data scoping and significant preparation time. Companies must strike a balance between the costs and benefits of compliance, particularly for small businesses. The conversation also touches on the broader implications of CMMC for supply chain security and the potential for CMMC to evolve beyond federal contractin

The worst storm in 30 years is on its way to Capeside, and no one seems to know but Grams and the editors of the Farmer's Almanac. Drue's obnoxious behavior in English class having doomed himself, Joey, and Dawson to have a three-way Two Gentlemen Of Verona debate for class the next day, prep is underway during Joey's Yacht Club shift. (Why are the future debate adversaries preparing together? It's more convenient for the plot that way, of course!) Presumably Joey's only getting away with all this slacking because Mrs. Valentine is an alumna of one of Andie's safety schools, and is busy interviewing Andie as a prospective applicant; their conversation quickly becomes an investigation of Andie's mental health. Since Joey couldn't join him, Pacey is celebrating his first-ever A by going sailing with Jen, which is why they're on the water -- with a dead radio -- when the storm starts to kick up. Once it gets too dangerous for Pacey to try to return to shore, he decides to head for a cove so secret he doesn't even know its name, but trusts that Dawson does. But given Dawson's record as a seaman, surely there's no one left in town who would let him borrow his boat, which is why it's a good thing that crotchety old Mr. Brooks (Harve Presnell!) showed up in his for his weekly prime rib special at the club, and that Drue knows where to find his spare keys. June 11th: Raymont Hopewell Born (1971) Sometimes it feels like all the pieces fall together during an investigation. Like it's the perfect storm of evidence that puts someone dangerous behind bars for good. On June 11th 1971 a man was born who would go on to commit some truly heinous crimes against the elderly. A man who, with the help of family and survivors, was placed behind bars when all the evidence against him created a pretty iron-clad case. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raymont_Hopewell, https://murderpedia.org/male.H/h/hopewell-raymont.htm, https://www.baltimoresun.com/2006/09/15/hopewell-sentenced-in-rapes-murders/, https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/local/2006/08/12/maryland-briefing/fd78b7a0-0105-4f90-9d65-b6a59a5910f5/ Learn more about your ad choices. God has a divine design for the storms in our lives. And sometimes the things that we fear the most turn out to be the exact things that He is planning to use to deliver us into what He wants next for us. So, our deliverance can potentially be found right in the midst of our storm. And on the next Treasured Truth, Pastor Ford will remind us, all we have to do is trust God in and through the storm. The Perfect Storm: Why Liberal Christianity Faces an Existential Crisis

This is an audio essay from my SubStack, Process This. You can head over here to read or watch the entire essay. I've been tracking the peculiar contradictions of American religious life for years now, and there's one puzzle that keeps me up at night: Why does liberal theology keep producing brilliant scholarship while liberal churches empty out? It's not just a marketing problem or bad leadership—it's what my friend Bo Sanders calls a "perfect storm." In this episode, I dig into the fundamental incompatibility between liberalism's love affair with individual choice, Christianity's call to communal formation, and consumer capitalism's corrosive effects on both. We've got a faith tradition that's too secular for believers, too religious for secularists, and too academic for everyone else. Meanwhile, 55% of mainline Protestants voted for Trump, so we can't even claim the "liberal" label fits the folks in our pews. I walk through five predicaments killing liberal Christianity—from what Henry Nelson Wieman called "spiritual thinness" to what I'm calling "liberal laryngitis," the inability to speak clearly on anything that matters. Add cultural shifts that make Sunday just another day for Target runs, and you've got churches with pipe organ endowments bigger than their mission budgets, wondering why nobody shows up. But here's the thing: something valuable dies if we lose thoughtful faith entirely. The question isn't whether liberal Christianity deserves to survive—it's whether we can build something sturdy enough to weather this storm. Maybe it's time to take Whitehead's advice and "disembark on Mount Ararat" to build something entirely new. Fair warning: This one's going to make some folks uncomfortable. But as Niebuhr reminds us, Christianity always stands under judgment—including its liberal expressions. ____________________________________________________________________________ I hope you enjoy it and consider supporting my work by joining 80k+ other people on Process This. If you want to read or watch the essay, you will find it here on SubStack. Theology Beer Camp | St. Paul, MN | October 16-18, 2025 3 Days of Craft Nerdiness with 50+ Theologians & God-Pods and 600 new friends.
