In this conversation, author Steve Berry discusses his deep-rooted love for history, the intricate process of crafting thrillers that intertwine historical facts with modern narratives, and the importance of research in his writing. He also shares insights into his philanthropic efforts through the History Matters initiative, which focuses on preserving local history, and hints at future adventures for his protagonist, Cotton Malone, in unexplored regions of the world. Takeaways Steve Berry's love for history began in childhood. His writing combines action, history, and conspiracies. The formula for his books is 'the same but different.' Research is crucial for creating engaging narratives. The 'ooh factor' is essential in selecting historical elements. History Matters has raised nearly $3 million for preservation. Berry's research trips are meticulously planned. He seeks unique insights during his travels. Cotton Malone will explore new regions in future novels. Berry aims to continue writing for many more years.   Steve Berry is the New York Times and #1 internationally bestselling author of twenty Cotton Malone novels, six stand-alone thrillers, two Luke Daniels adventures, and several works of short fiction. He has over twenty-six million books in print, translated into forty-one languages. This highly anticipated 20th installment is signature Berry, an unputdownable tale steeped in real history and locations – including a kidnapped Swedish princess, a precious medieval book with a controversial backstory, unforgettable and atmospheric locations across Stockholm and Sweden, cat-and-mouse spy games involving elite agents from the US and Russia, and so much more. When the younger sister of Sweden's King Wilhelm I is kidnapped, former Justice Department operative, Cotton Malone, is called in to quietly investigate before the public finds out. The ransom demand?  An 800-year-old book – the Codex Gigas – the largest illuminated medieval manuscript in the world that has been kept in Stockholm for nearly 400 years. Along the way it has also acquired another more mysterious moniker... The Devil's Bible. But there's a problem: to gain entrance to NATO to protect themselves from an increasingly hostile Russia, Sweden has already agreed to return the Codex Gigas to the Czech Republic to secure their holdout vote towards membership, something Russia will do anything to prevent. It's up to Cotton Malone and his associate Cassiopeia Vitt to locate the king's sister, secure the codex, thwart the Russians and most of all, diffuse what could be an explosive international situation. Trusted allies become hostile enemies, long-standing enemies suddenly shift into partners, and nothing is as it seems. In the end, Cotton and Cassiopeia come face-to-face with the unthinkable, changing both of their lives forever.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

In the vein of David Baldacci, John Grisham, and Harlan Coben—this is Steve Berry like you've never read him before. After a ten-year self-imposed exile, Brent Walker is returning home to Concord, a quaint town in central Georgia nestled close to the Savannah River. Two years ago, his father died, and now Brent, hired by Southern Republic Pulp and Paper Company as its assistant general counsel, is returning to care for his ailing mother. For decades, Southern Republic has invested heavily in Concord, creating a thriving community where its employees live, work, and retire. But the genteel sheen of this quiet town is deceiving, and when a list of cryptic code surfaces, Brent starts to see the cracks. Southern Republic's success is based largely on a highly unorthodox and deadly system to control costs, known only to the three owners of the company.  Now, one of them, Christopher Bozin, has had a change of heart. Brent's return to Concord, a move Bozin personally orchestrated, provides his conscience with a chance at redemption. A plan is set into motion, one that will not only criminally implicate Bozin's two partners but also place Brent Walker square in the crosshairs of men who want him dead—with only one course left available -to find and reveal the shocking secret of the list.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Greetings everyone. I'm still in moving mode, packing up life in Texas and getting ready for a year in Boston. I hit the road on Friday of this week for a three day road trip and am still behind on everything. That means the podcast is still on reruns for now, but I should have a new episode for you next time. This week's rerun is one I really liked, though—my conversation from two years ago with Steven Berry.Steven is the Sterling Professor of Economics at Yale and the inaugural Faculty Director of the Tobin Center. His work in industrial organization has shaped how economists think about markets in equilibrium, and his research spans industries from autos to airlines to media. He's also a winner of the Frisch Medal, a member of the National Academy of Sciences, and one of the field's most respected voices. We talked about his path into economics—from the Midwest, to Wisconsin, to a career that's helped define modern empirical IO. Naturally, we dug into the BLP model, the landmark framework he developed with James Levinsohn and Ariel Pakes that changed how we estimate demand in differentiated product markets. It's one of those ideas that's both deeply technical and hugely practical in policy and business. If you missed it the first time, I think you'll enjoy hearing Steven reflect on his career, his collaborators, and where the field is headed. Here's my rerun conversation with Steven Berry.Scott's Mixtape Substack is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. Looks Unfamiliar is a podcast in which writer and occasional broadcaster Tim Worthington talks to a guest about some of the things that they remember that nobody else ever seems to.Joining Tim this time for a suitably spooky chat is writer Steve Berry, who's hoping to dazzle the crowds at the village hall Halloween Disco with his knowledge of Words And Pictures' Witches Of Halloween, Smiths Horror Bags and Vincent Price's ill-fittingly horror-themed adverts for MB Games. Along the way we'll be questioning Richard Herring's historical sources for the story of St. Ian, asking Wittgenstein if he'd like a Dracula's Deadly Secret, pitching a combined biography of Henry Woolf, Wolfe Morris and Gabriel Woolf, estimating how many copies of MB Games' Voice Of The Mummy were piled up at Neverland Ranch and trying to work out exactly where a 'VHS Fonz' fits in to the Classic Horror tradition. You can find more editions of Looks Unfamiliar at timworthington.org. You can also find Steve on Looks Unfamiliar talking about Single Versions Of Pop Songs That Never Get Played Any More, Elastoplast Heroes, United States Of Television, Skoal Bandits, Starblazer Electronic Space Command Belt and Morning Has Broken here.If you enjoy Looks Unfamiliar, you can help to support the show by buying us a coffee here. They never did find a way of making it Dracula-themed. But you can bet they tried.
