Support Lorenzo on Patreon.com Guest speaker: John Beresford PROGRAM NOTES: Dr. John Bereford delivering this talk in 2006 at the conference celebrating Albert Hofmann's 100th birthday. Today's program features a lecture by psychedelic researcher Dr. John Beresford. Here is Erowid's introduction to him: "British-born John Beresford began his psychedelic research interests in 1961, and shortly thereafter he resigned his post as an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at New York Medical College. In 1963 he founded the Agora Scientific Trust, the world's first research organization devoted to investigating the effects of LSD. In contrast to Leary's invitation to "tune in, turn on, and drop out", Beresford initially wanted to keep LSD as a tool of scientifically trained specialists. However, later in his life he adopted a viewpoint that was opposed to the medicalization of psychedelics." Of course, the story that he is best known for is the time that he wrote to Sandoz Laboratories and requested one gram of LSD! (If my math is correct, that's about 4,000 doses of 250 mics each.) Amazingly, Sandoz sent him a gram through the mail and attached a note that read, "Good luck." The talk we are about to listen to was given by Dr. Beresford at the conference celebrating Albert Hofmann's 100th birthday. He titled it: "Psychedelic Agents and the Structure of Consciousness: Stages in a Session Using LSD and DMT".

As you can see from the names of the speakers, this was a star-studded event. While this 1992 conference features much talk about the War on Drugs, it is an interesting counterpoint to the conference that was held in Denver earlier this year in which the focus was the scientific importance of psychdelic substances.

The Diary of a Country Parson by James Woodforde audiobook. The Revd. James Woodforde was an English clergyman, best known for his vivid account of parish life in the 18th century. His diary, edited by John Beresford, remained unpublished until the 20th century. The diary provides a wonderfully full account of the small community in which the diarist lived — of the births and deaths, comings and goings, illnesses, and annual celebrations, along with many other details of daily life. As a churchman, Woodforde himself was conscientious by the standards of his time, charitable and pious without being sanctimonious and again typical of his day, deeply suspicious of enthusiasm. The value of the diary to the historian lies in the wealth of primary source material it provides, while the general reader can bring from it the authentic flavor of 18th-century English country life
After last weeks chat with Darius Charles, we stay on the football theme with another ex Professional footballer, Robbie Elliott. Robbie had almost two decades as a professional footballer, playing over 140 times for his beloved Newcastle United and over 250 appearances in total, which also included spells at Sunderland, Leeds, Hartlepool and an eventful four years at Bolton Wanderers. Over his career, he' worked under some iconic managers including Ossie Ardiles, Kevin Keegan, Kenny Dalglish, Sam Allardyce and Sir Bobby Robson and we chat about all of those managers and the twists and turns Robbie had across his career and his learning from that. I met Robbie first when he was working for the Nike research lab and he's forged a career in sports technology, innovation and performance since his retirement. All of that we will chat about in part two next week, but as we sat outside the bustling Westfield shopping centre in West London, we started with Robbie's time in the Newcastle academy and how that compares to the modern-day set-up.Show Notes: Southampton Football Club - https://www.southamptonfc.com/Alan Shearer - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_ShearerGateshead Stadium - https://www.gogateshead.com/article/5829/Gateshead-International-StadiumNewcastle Football Club - https://www.nufc.co.uk/Ossie Ardiles - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osvaldo_ArdilesYTS - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Youth_Training_SchemeAlan Thompson - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Thompson_(footballer,_born_1973)Lee Clark - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lee_Clark_(footballer)Steve Watson - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_WatsonJim Smith - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Smith_(footballer,_born_1940)Middlesborough Football Club - https://www.mfc.co.uk/Bobby Saxton - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobby_SaxtonRoy Aitken - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roy_AitkenJohn Burridge - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_BurridgeACL Injury - https://mayocl.in/3MuoxcMLilleshall - https://www.lilleshallnsc.co.uk/nsc/ Kevin Keegan - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_KeeganNewcastle promotion against Grimsby - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HNk_W6CFJKwRob Lee - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rob_LeeJohn Beresford - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Beresford_(footballer)Les Ferdinand - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Les_FerdinandDavid Ginola - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_GinolaBrian Kilcline - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_KilclineKevin Sheedy - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_Sheedy_(Irish_footballer)David Kelly - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Kelly_(association_footballer)Steve Howey - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Howey_(footballer)Faustino Asprilla - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faustino_AsprillaBarry Venison - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_VenisonPeter Beardsley - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_BeardsleyDavid Batty - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_BattyZone Of Optional Function - https://bit.ly/3Nk3YzDKenny Dalglish - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenny_DalglishAlex Ferguson - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alex_FergusonPLC - https://bit.ly/3wuJKMUBolton Wanderers Football Club - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bolton_Wanderers_F.C.Steve Black - https://bit.ly/38woNJmEarl Barrett - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earl_BarrettMichael Appleton - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_AppletonColin Todd - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colin_ToddSam Allardyce - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_AllardyceCharlie Brown - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlie_BrownMLS - https://www.mlssoccer.com/Arsene Wenger - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ars%C3%A8ne_WengerSir Bobby Robson - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobby_RobsonFreddie Shepherd - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freddy_ShepherdNorthumbria University - https://www.northumbria.ac.uk/Bike for Bobby - https://bit.ly/3wlhNYZ=More About Robbie Elliott:Twitter - https://twitter.com/robbieelliott3?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5EauthorLinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/robbie-elliott-6971383b/Wikipedia - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robbie_ElliottListen & Subscribe to The Ben Ryan Podcast:Ben's Website - http://benryan.co.uk/bio/Apple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-ben-ryan-podcast/id1553400216Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/3iUL1eLA7HFKt5gxO7Uf4j?si=oN9YN6uFRSSGbO6kR01ONQAmazon Music - https://amzn.to/3shGDnOTuneIn - http://tun.in/pkdsmBen On Social:Follow me on Instagram - https://bit.ly/2Z5QSitFollow me on Twitter - https://bit.ly/3ph5W7oFollow me on LinkedIn - https://bit.ly/3ah8FtvRead about me - https://amzn.to/2NLu0Ck

After a brief start in the pharmaceutical industry, John Beresford transitioned to the Tech Space when he was recruited to a small Waterloo company in the early 2000s called Research in Motion, which would later go on to become Blackberry. Leading North American sales and marketing teams at BlackBerry gave John had a front row seat to the birth of the smartphone revolution. While completing an MBA at Wilfrid Laurier University John met the co-founders who would eventually form a company called Eventpeeks which has evolved into Canada’s preeminent social media broadcasting company, focusing on live experiences and social analytics. Like Eventpeeks, John’s passion for entrepreneurship was forged in the Wilfrid Laurier University Launchpad, a program which prides itself in applying academic rigor to the lean startup method popularized by startup gurus like Steve Blank. The Laurier LaunchPad program also serves as an incubator for startups providing mentors, office space and community connections to innovative and ambitious founders. Following graduation John stuck around to help manage the LaunchPad program and teach entrepreneurship courses at Wilfrid Laurier University. It was his experience at the Laurier LaunchPad that helped inspire the work being done at The Revenue U. Thus began the creation of a series of educational programs dedicated to helping early stage founders and mid market sales professionals learn the art and science of sales. Working with the Waterloo based institution Communitech over a 12 month period The Revenue U team were able to work with over one hundred of startup companies, building and perfecting the the revenue focused education they required to become profitable. The Revenue U courses are now a staple at some of Canada’s top startup support organizations: Communitech, Ryerson DMZ and the Ontario Centres of Excellence.
10 years ago a great person who I am thankful enough to have called a friend was taken from us way too soon. On this, what would have been his 50th birthday - I wanted to share this - one of the first times I was ever behind a board engineering a track with a live band in a studio. John Beresford is singing vocals of this Bob Marley track, Babylon System. It is an acoustic cover of this iconic song and was one of the last tracks that John recorded and given the unfortunate circumstances of how he died the lyrics have special meaning the me and those who knew him best. We miss you buddy but are thankful for the time we got while you were here with us.

Guest speaker: Dr. Timothy Leary [NOTE: All quotations are by Dr. Timothy Leary.] "So to me, that Summer of Love [1967] was kind of a coming out party, a coming of age party, of the first wave, the first year of the baby boom [when the first boomers turned 21]." "It's kind of interesting that the military, and the police, and these bureaucrats, they live in a germ-free society. They live in shells of bureaucratic boot kissing." "I'm very much against addicts and drug fuck-ups." "At those moments in human history where it's time for our species to confront a new reality, whether it's going from four foot to two foot, or it's to make love face-to-face or whatever, there's a certain breed of human beings in every gene pool who come along at that time and make us feel comfortable. They explain, they personalize, they popularize what's really happening. Now you know who these people are. They are the artists, the musicians, the playwrights, the poets, the myth makers, the wizards, the jugglers, the story tellers, the crazed scientist, the mischievous physicist, you know who they are. In every epic of human history these people come along." "So finally we catch on, it's the governments that cause all the fuck-ups." "It doesn't do any good to think for yourself if you don't know how to think." "They say, never mind about politics or economics or religion, it's language that controls society and that controls the individual. And who controls the language controls everything. … If you control the language, and the technology of the language, you control the mind." "The personal computer allows you to do exactly what these French philosophers say we gotta do, control your own screen." "The real message I get from the 20th century is learn how to be cyber-hip." "Literacy my friends is the oppressive chains of the educated middle class."
