Sixteen games. Sixty-two goals. Two breathless weeks of UEFA Champions League playoff drama. Has Europe's elite competition ever been this entertaining? And with the away-goals rule gone and a new format delivering chaos, comebacks and late drama... Is this proof that the changes are good for football? On the other hand VAR is back under the spotlight too, after another hugely controversial decision involving Lloyd Kelly and Juventus. What needs to be done at the top to stop referees taking over the game? And then there's Newcastle United. It's been a monumental two years: Champions League knockout football and silverware secured for the first time in 70 years. Should Eddie Howe be receiving more credit? And should his name already be mentioned alongside club icons like Sir Bobby Robson and Kevin Keegan? The Rest Is Football is powered by Fuse Energy. The cultural artefact we are exploring in this Podding On episode is Newcastle United manager Kevin Keegan's infamous rant about Alex Ferguson on 29th April 1996. We flick through Paul McCarthy's book, Fever Pitch: The Rise of the Premier League 1992-2004, and reflect on some of the weird, wonderful, and bizarre aspects of the early days of the Premier League. We hope that whether you love, hate, or are generally (dis)interested in football, you will find something to enjoy in our conversation about this British cultural phenomenon thirty years on. Behind every high-performance environment are people, personalities, and decisions that shape outcomes. This week on the Science for Sport Podcast, Richard Graves is joined by former England international and Premier League defender Warren Barton, speaking from California. Warren reflects on a career that spanned very different eras of elite football, from coming through non-league and the famously demanding culture of Wimbledon's “Crazy Gang”, to becoming a record signing at Newcastle United during the Entertainers era. Across the conversation, Warren offers a rare, first-hand perspective on the psychology of professional sport: rejection, resilience, team identity, leadership, and how elite environments shape behaviour. The discussion also moves into modern high-performance sport, exploring how man-management, culture, and trust still sit alongside data, technology, and sports science. Warren shares thoughtful insights on coaching, communication, player wellbeing, and why asking an athlete how they feel still matters just as much as what the numbers say. A wide-ranging, honest conversation that will resonate with practitioners working in elite sport, as well as those interested in the human side of performance. In this episode you will learn How early rejection and non-academy pathways can shape resilience and long-term success Why strong team culture and shared identity can create psychological advantages over more talented opponents Lessons from Wimbledon's “Crazy Gang” environment and what modern teams can still learn from it How elite managers like Kevin Keegan, Kenny Dalglish, and Sir Bobby Robson differed in leadership and man-management Why man-management remains central to performance, even in data-rich environments How elite players and coaches balanced intuition, experience, and emerging sports science practices The importance of trust, togetherness, and players “having each other's backs” in high-pressure environments Where modern football may be losing connection with basic human communication Warren's perspective on technology, VAR, and how decision-making affects the athlete and fan experience How coaches can better integrate data with athlete feedback and lived experience About Warren Barton Warren Barton is a former England international footballer who played at the highest level of English football during the 1990s. His career included spells at Wimbledon and Newcastle United, where he became part of Kevin Keegan's iconic “Entertainers” side and captained the club during one of its most influential Premier League eras. Since retiring from playing, Warren has built a career in broadcasting and coaching, working extensively in the United States as a football analyst and pundit, including coverage of major international tournaments. He holds his UEFA Pro Licence and continues to work across elite football, combining practical experience with a deep understanding of performance, psychology, and leadership. Brad Friedel played his college ball at UCLA and had a stint at Liverpool before a longer and seriously fruitful one at Blackburn Rovers. He also stopped shots for Aston Villa and for Tottenham Hotspur, where in his final season he ran into a guy named Mauricio Pochettino. The goalkeeper, who was capped 82 times for the U.S. Men's National Team, got a front-row seat to the Argentine's methods when he came in and transformed the club, and his faith has never wavered that Pochettino will deliver now as head coach of the American team.We talked about all that when Friedel joined the show this Thanksgiving week, but we also got into a fascinating early chapter of his career. In 1995, he went off to Istanbul to play for Graeme Souness at Galatasaray. Along the way, he got a true taste of one of the world's most combustible football derbies, Galatasaray against Fenerbahce, the latest edition of which will play out this coming Monday.Friedel talked the derby, his times with Brian Clough and Kevin Keegan, and a bit about life in Istanbul.Get more sharp coverage of the world's game at TheFootballWeekend.com ↗️ Hosted on Acast. Pick your best Newcastle United but you can only have one player per manager who signed them or brought them through the youth ranks.

He's a Treble winner and fourth on the Premier League's all-time scoring list with 187 goals. Introducing the latest guest on the Obi One Podcast: Manchester United legend Andy Cole. ‘Coley' sits down with John Obi Mikel and Chris McHardy to reflect on the highs - and lows - from his career on and off the pitch. He sets the record straight on what really happened at Newcastle and why he hasn't spoken to Kevin Keegan since. What were his first impressions of Manchester United, Sir Alex Ferguson and a certain Eric Cantona? And, what does he make of today's United and Ruben Amorim? Cole also famously shunned penalty kicks, scoring just once from the spot in the Premier League. But why? The former striker reveals all. Plus, Cole also lifts the lid on his health battle off the field and a betrayal that left him questioning everything. This is the real Andy Cole. Unapologetic and authentic. In the first podcast Football Ruined My Life has done since the untimely demise of Patrick Barclay, Jon Holmes and Colin Shindler are joined by the Daily Telegraph sports columnist Jim White. Forced to restart the episode because the Producer had failed to press the record button first time round, eventually the panel turn to the “the poisoned chalice”. They consider the story from the sad night of defeat on penalties in Turin to the singularly appropriate day in 2000 when Kevin Keegan resigned the job in the toilets at Wembley Stadium after a 1-0 home defeat by Germany. In between came the nadir of Graham Taylor and the oh-so-nearly efforts of Terry Venables before Glenn Hoddle was defeated by the players' decision to embrace his original tactics but reject his rather strange insistence on utilising the assistance of a faith healer called Eileen Drewery. Meanwhile, the former City defender Danny Granville is on the show, discussing his time at Maine Road - from joining Joe Royle's promotion-chasing side in the summer of 1999, through going up at Blackburn to relegation at Ipswich, and then his departure under Kevin Keegan. Plus, why do so many people covering the background to the Premier League charges case omit that some of the evidence at CAS in the UEFA case was not proven instead of time-barred? And what would happen if the 2012 City team played the 2023 one? ========== To get more podcasts or to listen without the ads, join our Patreon. We're going back into the shadows and listening out for footsteps on tiled floors, as we revisit a series that all of us enjoyed back in season 1. We're going back 25 years to 2000 to look at a massively influential first-person stealth game. We're talking Thief II: The Metal Age.On this episode of Stealth Boom Boom, we chat a little bit about the architecture of Meet Joe Black, co-operative thieving, and crunching to hit the release date. We also look at a trailer that Eddie Vedder (and by extension John McEnroe) would be happy with, some of the hopes developer Looking Glass Studios had for the franchise, and the closure of the studio only months after launch. Here are some of the things you're gonna hear us chat about in our review: staying in the pitch black shadows and extinguishing flames with your water arrows; walking on carpet and shooting at tiled floors with your moss arrows; the Stealth Strepsil; the guards that never shut up; many different ways to move; new magic potions; the Scouting Orb and whether there's a need for it; the golden rule: get behind ‘em; a glitchy romance; cameras and big robots with faces; combat is punishment for being spotted; Dishonored; praise for quick save functionality; more objectives for higher difficulties; framing a lieutenant at the local police station; Kevin Keegan; a fondness for worldbuilding rather than plot; Blood Omen 2; sarky Garrett; religious texts; Karras as played by Droopy Dog; one of the best arguments; a UI that didn't please Josh; and a specific sound that pleases everyone. After all that, we take you through what some of the critics were saying about the game around the time it came out, and then we give you our final verdicts on whether Thief 2: The Metal Age is a Pass, a Play, or an Espionage Explosion. For those who would like to play along at home, we'll be discussing, reviewing and dissecting Metal Gear Acid on the next episode of Stealth Boom Boom.IMPORTANT LINKS TO THINGS
After perhaps the best performance of the season against Newcastle and perhaps the worst performance of the season against Real Madrid, David Mooney is joined by City fan Ciaran Murray and, from BBC Radio Manchester, Mike Minay to assess the week. They discuss the Jekyll-and-Hyde style displays of the season so far (as they continue to search for pop culture metaphors), while they look at the impact of the new signings so far, and what could come between now and May. With Liverpool and Spurs on the cards for this week, they discuss what the state of play is given how both teams have their own little issues at the moment too... and whether City have it in the tank to exploit those or if Pep Guardiola's side are just too unpredictable. Former City midfielder Danny Tiatto speaks to the show about his time at Maine Road - taking in back-to-back promotions, playing under Joe Royle and Kevin Keegan, and red cards aplenty. A big week of news for an international break! David Mooney is joined by Adam Carter from StatCity.co.uk and by City fan Paul Atherton to look back over the game with Fulham and the performance in what turned out to be a bit of a nervy afternoon. Are Fulham just good in transition or should City be able to do better to control those sorts of games? We get into that. Earlier this week, we had the full judgement in the case between City and the Premier League over Associated Party Transactions. What does it all mean? Football finance expert Kieran Maguire speaks to the show to explain what's happened and what might happen next. The former City goalkeeper David Seaman speaks to the show about his time at Eastlands and working with Kevin Keegan. What did he enjoy? What did he find difficult after a long and distinguished career at Arsenal? It also looks like the Director of Football, Txiki Begiristain, will be leaving the club at the end of the season, so we also look at the potential impacts and ramifications of that change. ========== To get more podcasts or to listen without the ads, join our Patreon.
