This week, we're delighted to welcome Lee Johnson to the show. Lee has had a stellar career as both a player and manager, playing over 400 games before becoming the youngest manager in the Football League at 31 when he took over at Oldham in 2013. Since that first job he has managed some historic clubs including Sunderland, Bristol City, and Hibernian. After a tough year, leaving Hibs followed by a very brief spell at Fleetwood, Lee took the time out to reflect on the next stage of his career and gain some different experiences, from working with Manchester City's development squad, to going to Africa to source the best young talent. The life of a football manager is a pretty crazy one. You live on a knife edge; job security is not something that exists for 99.9%. Lee has been a victim of his own success on more than one occasion, over-achieving and setting new expectations that then need to be continuously met. Hire and fire culture is a reality of modern day football, but it's not a good one. What is it like being on the manager's end of the deal? A huge advocate of technology, data and modern coaching methods, this is a detailed review of life as a top level manager while also looking at an evolving football industry continuously in a state of unpredictable change. As always with the best football shows, topped off with some eye-opening stories! On today's show we discuss: Life as a Manager: From becoming the youngest manager in the Football League to taking a break following two sackings in a season, the ups and downs of management. What was the transition like when Lee made the step from being part of a dressing room to leading one? What is a manager's greatest anxiety? Learning from the best; how a relationship with Kenny Dalglish helped Lee establish his managerial career. ‘Sometimes football gives you a rest'. What is next for Lee now he has had some time out from the game? Why managing mavericks in the game is something a manager has to learn to use to the team's advantage. Managing Top Clubs: ‘Bristol City was a team for tomorrow'. What does Lee mean by this? The importance of balancing good business and player sales with ambition on the pitch and being able to compete. A manager can very quickly become a victim of their own success; how strong starts at Bristol City and Sunderland raised the bar of expectation for future results. How do you manage up? Why the relationship between manager and owner is crucial. Changing the goal line; how a job can be sold to a manager as one thing and be very different when you get there. What it was like beating Jose Mourinho and competing with Pep Guardiola in a historic Bristol City cup run. The State of Football: Are clubs making too many business decisions that are not based on sporting success? Data led recruitment has become the most important strategy in football, but are there other things to consider when signing a player? Should managers change their style when you get promoted to a new league? Our Partners: Orreco https://www.orreco.com/ Scan.com https://uk.scan.com/
Following the Icons magazine, lovingly detailing 60 of the game's greatest names, we decided to delve a little deeper into some of them in this podcast series. Connoisseur of all things Anfield, Steven Scragg, reflects on the career of Kenny Dalglish, on the field and off it.
In our first Goodison Park: My Home interview published in 2025 – the year Everton finally depart the Grand Old Lady – we speak to the Blues' favourite Yorkshireman Ian Snodin. Despite hailing from the other side of the Pennines, ‘Snods' as he is affectionately known by Evertonians, became a True Blue and adored by the Goodison fanbase when snubbed Liverpool's Kenny Dalglish to accept Howard Kendall's offer to join the club in 1987. Ian's decision was vindicated as he was rewarded with a League Championship medal in his first season on Merseyside and his hilarious tale about what happened to him on the way home from that title success clinched at Norwich City is worth watching the interview alone! He also speaks candidly about his upbringing in a mining community, his formative years in the game playing alongside his elder brother Glynn at Doncaster Rovers and the influence that Billy Bremner had on him both there and at Leeds United plus the varied role he now plays as an ambassador for Everton Football Club. Why don't great players automatically make great managers? Why did Bobby Charlton fail so disastrously at Preston when Kenny Dalglish succeeded so triumphantly at Liverpool as Johan Cruyff did at Barcelona? Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger had no careers at all as players but turned out to be great managers, Steven Gerard and Frank Lampard were great players but not great managers. The Premier League was sneaking up on them, Europe was back and they needed to be in the mix to receive all the heightened riches, fame and glory that came with it. Instead, it was a decade to forget in terms of trophies. In terms of entertainment value? A stadium disaster that left supporters dead, a European Cup final lost and the lineage of great coaches culled abruptly. 1985 was a formative year for Liverpool. They had been carried by the weight of the Boot Room, through Shankly, Paisley and Fagan and were now picking up the pieces of a near 30-year footballing odyssey. What next? Our guest for season 4 of "Everything I know About Me" is one of the most formidable and successful footballer players Scotland has ever produced - Graeme Souness. Graeme was interviewed over 2 days in December 2023 where he opened up about his childhood in the pre-fabs of Edinburgh all the way through to the present day via all of his achievements but also the tragedies and controversies he has endured. In today's episode, we hear about arguably the most tumultuous time in Graeme's life and career when he took over as manager of Liverpool from his friend Kenny Dalglish, two years on from the Hillsborough Disaster. He talks us through the fears he faced when he needed a life-saving heart operation which was then followed by a huge lapse of judgement when he gave an interview about his operation and recovery which appeared on the front page of the Sun on the third anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster. He talks about how he regrets not resigning and how the mistake still haunts him and how he will apologise for it until the day he dies. He also talks about his defining flag-planting moment as manager of Galatasaray and then how his career as a football manager ended with him being unceremoniously sacked by letter. Here's another chance to hear my interview with Tim Sherwood from season five.Tim was recruited by Kenny Dalglish for Blackburn Rovers in 1992, and the classy midfielder captained the side to their glorious Premier League title win in season 1994-95. Rovers had blown a big lead over Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United, and Tim describes the sleepless nights ahead of the decisive final day. It is incredible to thing that King Kenny's famous Rovers team trained on a public park. Also: Shearer, Speedie and making Emmanuel Petit cry.Enjoy.GrahamSubscribe to The Big Interview YouTube channel Hosted on Acast. Bob Paisley OBE was an English professional football manager and player who played as a wing-half. He spent almost 50 years with Liverpool and is regarded, due to his achievements with the club, as one of the greatest British managers of all time. Rob talks about this icon in this episode with essential lessons that can be used from the great mans career. KEY TAKEAWAYS Bob Paisley followed Bill Shankly into the manager position at Liverpool. In 1974 after the FA Cup Final win and Bob was offered the job he initially refused it. Bob was not a great communicator according to a significant number of players, so much so that his team talks were faltering and littered with forgotten names. He recruited Kenny Dalglish, Alan Hansen and Graham Souness, three of the top players around at that time. His success was largely due to his trust in his team, his knowledge of the people he worked with and his drive to constantly improve. BEST MOMENTS ‘There's so much to talk about with Bob, although it could be said that he was a very simple man. I'm not actually sure whether Bob would have been as successful now as he was in his own time.' ‘There was almost an air of the players making it up themselves and its absolutely phenomenal.' ‘The thing that goes through all this, that created his success is that he knew the game so well, he knew players and he knew what players could do and what he wanted.' ‘I thinks its an example of Bob's and Liverpool's belief in themselves and the way that they were doing it and I think the success that they were having at that time.' After last weeks chat with Darius Charles, we stay on the football theme with another ex Professional footballer, Robbie Elliott. Robbie had almost two decades as a professional footballer, playing over 140 times for his beloved Newcastle United and over 250 appearances in total, which also included spells at Sunderland, Leeds, Hartlepool and an eventful four years at Bolton Wanderers. Over his career, he' worked under some iconic managers including Ossie Ardiles, Kevin Keegan, Kenny Dalglish, Sam Allardyce and Sir Bobby Robson and we chat about all of those managers and the twists and turns Robbie had across his career and his learning from that. I met Robbie first when he was working for the Nike research lab and he's forged a career in sports technology, innovation and performance since his retirement. All of that we will chat about in part two next week, but as we sat outside the bustling Westfield shopping centre in West London, we started with Robbie's time in the Newcastle academy and how that compares to the modern-day set-up.Show Notes: Southampton Football Club - https://www.southamptonfc.com/Alan Shearer - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_ShearerGateshead Stadium - https://www.gogateshead.com/article/5829/Gateshead-International-StadiumNewcastle Football Club - https://www.nufc.co.uk/Ossie Ardiles - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osvaldo_ArdilesYTS - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Youth_Training_SchemeAlan Thompson - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Thompson_(footballer,_born_1973)Lee Clark - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lee_Clark_(footballer)Steve Watson - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_WatsonJim Smith - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Smith_(footballer,_born_1940)Middlesborough Football Club - https://www.mfc.co.uk/Bobby Saxton - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobby_SaxtonRoy Aitken - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roy_AitkenJohn Burridge - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_BurridgeACL Injury - https://mayocl.in/3MuoxcMLilleshall - https://www.lilleshallnsc.co.uk/nsc/ Kevin Keegan - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_KeeganNewcastle promotion against Grimsby - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HNk_W6CFJKwRob Lee - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rob_LeeJohn Beresford - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Beresford_(footballer)Les Ferdinand - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Les_FerdinandDavid Ginola - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_GinolaBrian Kilcline - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_KilclineKevin Sheedy - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_Sheedy_(Irish_footballer)David Kelly - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Kelly_(association_footballer)Steve Howey - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Howey_(footballer)Faustino Asprilla - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faustino_AsprillaBarry Venison - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_VenisonPeter Beardsley - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_BeardsleyDavid Batty - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_BattyZone Of Optional Function - https://bit.ly/3Nk3YzDKenny Dalglish - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenny_DalglishAlex Ferguson - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alex_FergusonPLC - https://bit.ly/3wuJKMUBolton Wanderers Football Club - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bolton_Wanderers_F.C.Steve Black - https://bit.ly/38woNJmEarl Barrett - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earl_BarrettMichael Appleton - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_AppletonColin Todd - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colin_ToddSam Allardyce - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_AllardyceCharlie Brown - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlie_BrownMLS - https://www.mlssoccer.com/Arsene Wenger - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ars%C3%A8ne_WengerSir Bobby Robson - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobby_RobsonFreddie Shepherd - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freddy_ShepherdNorthumbria University - https://www.northumbria.ac.uk/Bike for Bobby - https://bit.ly/3wlhNYZ=More About Robbie Elliott:Twitter - https://twitter.com/robbieelliott3?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5EauthorLinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/robbie-elliott-6971383b/Wikipedia - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robbie_ElliottListen & Subscribe to The Ben Ryan Podcast:Ben's Website - http://benryan.co.uk/bio/Apple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-ben-ryan-podcast/id1553400216Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/3iUL1eLA7HFKt5gxO7Uf4j?si=oN9YN6uFRSSGbO6kR01ONQAmazon Music - https://amzn.to/3shGDnOTuneIn - http://tun.in/pkdsmBen On Social:Follow me on Instagram - https://bit.ly/2Z5QSitFollow me on Twitter - https://bit.ly/3ph5W7oFollow me on LinkedIn - https://bit.ly/3ah8FtvRead about me - https://amzn.to/2NLu0Ck
More than 90 Minutes Editor, Andrew Milne welcomes back Matt McGlone, Editor of the Alternative View for a catch up on Talk from the Terrace show on the Celtic Soul Podcast. The Bhoys look back on Sundays Glasgow Derby v the Rangers. Celtic shared the points on the day to keep their 6 points-gap from their nearest rivals with 3 games to go and a healthy goal difference of 19 as we go into Saturday's game against Hearts at Celtic Park in another lunchtime kick off which the Bhoys preview. The Japanese factor is discussed and the rotation of Rogic and O'Reilly and the differences offered by Kyogo and Giakoumakis leading the Celtic line. Hearts have secured their place in Europe and are guaranteed third place which would have been their target at the start of the campaign, and they have a Cup Final to look forward to. Maybe they will have one eye on the Cup but for us it's all about the Celtic because the title has still to be won. The Rangers will play Sunday at 3pm against Dundee United at Ibrox. The visitors have a European place to battle for with Ross County and Motherwell so should be well up for the game. Mark Lawell has been announced as Head of Scouting and Recruitment this week and the bhoys discuss his arrival and Ange Postecoglou's reaction to his latest recruit who he has worked closely with before. The bhoys also discuss the pro and cons of Celtic fans at Ibrox and the FC Statement fans at Celtic Park. As the transfer window approaches, Matt looks back in time to the transfers of Davie Hay, Kenny Dalglish, Kieran Tierney, and the departure of Henrik Larrson to Barcelona. Former Manchester United defender Henning Berg joined us at Old Trafford for this week's UTD Podcast. The Norwegian told us how a move to Man Utd nearly materialised years before his eventual arrival, but fell apart due to a work permit issue. We heard how his move to Blackburn happened instead, and Henning described what it was like working with Kenny Dalglish before being re-united with David May at Old Trafford, under Sir Alex Ferguson. Henning also recalled his worst hairdryer from the boss, and looks back on "the perfect season" in 1999.Sam and Maysie read out your e-mails at the end of the episode.
