Jason Webber joined the Football Association of Wales almost five years ago, to lead on EDI and Sustainability, a brand new role at the time. Prior to that, Jason worked in various Football Development roles, including coaching at the Cardiff City Academy. On leaving University, Jason worked for Show Racism the Red Card, which was his introduction to the Equality World. Jason on the emergence of EDI in football: “We've seen quite a shift in recent years and certainly since the murder of George Floyd. There has been quite a gulf of EDI related roles, particularly in football, but in sport more broadly. Sport is starting to be under the microscope a little bit more and being held accountable for progress, or lack of it, which maybe other industries have gone through. So there's certainly more focus in this area for Chief Executives, National Governing Bodies and in clubs across the game.” Jason on opportunity: “Through our BE: Football programme, we do a lot of work in schools, providing playing football opportunities. Unfortunately, there are still many schools that don't offer football for girls and it's very much an exclusive offer to boys. The Be: Football programme enables skills development and opportunities for girls to be mentors themselves in their own schools and be Ambassadors for younger girls.” Jason on Governance: “It is so important that EDI is an explicit and visible core element in any governance. Many National Associations are often a little bit archaic with how they are structured and set up and that's been the case for maybe a hundred years. WE have had a big change ourselves in terms of our own governance models and structures, but also ensuring that EDI is a core part and embedded within those changes and processes and likewise for clubs as well. We are currently working through to make sure that every club in Wales, from our professional clubs to grassroots, all have their own strategic plans, so that they are very clear on the direction they are going. The changes we have made ourselves, have brought about better representation and we have made huge changes to our recruitment process.”

Take a look at the CV of Jason Webber, and you'll see that a passion for equality and diversity is burned into everything does. For more than a decade, he was a campaign co-ordinator with Show Racism the Red Card – and since 2020, he's been a key part of trying to make the beautiful game something for everyone in Wales as the senior EDI Manager at the Football Association of Wales. That love of the beautiful game runs deep in this man – with stints as an Academy Coach at Cardiff City and Merthyr Town alongside his EDI work. And now, it's part of a commitment that runs through him to open up football to people who have traditionally felt the game isn't for them. So, that's what we talk about in this episode – everything from starting Wales' first LGBTQ+ supporters group for the national team, some of the challenges that still exist in the game, what to say to people who say football shouldn't be ‘political' – honestly, it's a fascinating chat that we think you'll love. Jackson, Mississippi, remains gripped in an ongoing water crisis. The task of distributing water to local residents has been largely taken up by community organizations like Cooperation Jackson and Operation Good. Organizer, writer, and educator Kali Akuno joins The Marc Steiner Show to explain how the current crisis is a reflection of capitalism's failures and decades of institutional racism. Though Jackson today is more than 80% Black, this is a recent demographic development created by white flight and capital flight from the city. The state's prolonged neglect of Jackson's infrastructure is a consequence of an entrenched far-right politics in Mississippi's public institutions. And what's happening currently in Jackson is a sign of things to come around the country. To fight back, Akuno emphasizes the need to build mass movements and grassroots networks capable of exercising real political power.Post-Production: Stephen FrankHelp us continue producing The Marc Steiner Show by following us and becoming a monthly sustainer:Donate: https://therealnews.com/donate-pod-mssSign up for our newsletter: https://therealnews.com/nl-pod-stGet The Marc Steiner Show updates: https://therealnews.com/up-pod-stLike us on Facebook: https://facebook.com/therealnewsFollow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/therealnews

With only 25% paying back their student loan in full is this a way to reduce the burden on tax payers or is this unfair on young people? In today's episode, we bring you an important and insightful conversation between three champions for allyship.Leaders in EDI is a monthly series covering news, views, comments and debates happening across the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion space. It also shines a spotlight on the progress being made and the challenges being faced in EDI across sport. This month's episode, recorded live at our International Women's Day pop-up event, sees three trailblazing advocates for women in sport discuss the importance of allyship. First on our panel is Katie Shaw, an inspiring female leader in sports and entertainment. Shaw spent seven years at prominent sports marketing company Fuse, before leaving in the latter half of last year to begin a new role of Global Head of Brand Engagement at Entourage Sports & Entertainment Company. A keen champion for women in sport, Shaw was a committee member at Omniwomen UK during her time at Fuse.Joining Shaw is Manisha Tailor, Assistant Head of Coaching at Queen's Park Rangers, and a leader who has dedicated much of her working life to supporting women and those with mental illness through work in education. A qualified head-teacher with over 15 years of experience working in schools across the UK and Internationally, Tailor is also an education worker for Show Racism the Red Card, and Founder/Director of Swaggarlicious Limited, which uses the power of football and education to engage with diverse community groups and organisations to help them lead a healthy lifestyle and develop lifelong learning skills.Rounding off our panel is the man Tailor sees as a great example of allyship, Chris Ramsey, a former professional footballer and Taylor's colleague at QPR, where he serves as Technical Director. He has coached and managed at all levels of football, and has been listed among the 30 Most Influential Black People in Football by the Voice, the UK's leading black newspaper. As an outspoken advocate of social justice and EDI, Ramsey has been lauded as a trailblazer for changing the face of the QPR Academy in a positive way.In an illuminating and educational discussion, the three panelists talked to Leaders hosts Javan Odegah and Laura McQueen about different facets of allyship, such as how to implement allyship on a day-to-day basis, traditional line management vs allyship and how exactly you can “microwave someone's learning.”The Leaders in EDI podcast is part of the Leaders Meet: Diversity Series, delivered in partnership with Meta, which provides a platform for executives within sport to come together to drive diversity across the industry, accelerate the pace of change and inspire the next generation of executives, through thought-leadership events and digital forums. Growing up it would have been easy to associate being an MP with being a person of utmost decency and integrity. It went with the territory. The first Member of Parliament that I remember was my local MP in Tottenham, North London, the late Bernie Grant who was simply a brilliant representative for his constituents and the many different communities that live here. Fast-forward 40 years and after almost 12 years of Conservative rule politics has never had a more currupt stench in the nostrils of the working class. Who would have believed that 150,000 deaths, many linked to poor Government decisions, would be so acceptable to parts of society - who would have thought that lying consistently would not attract any condemnatation from our so-called top home affairs journalists? I mentioned proportional representation in my last episode and I used to be scared of it because people would argue that extreme elements could get into Westminister. To be frank, after seeing this sh1tshow for 12 years I can't see what the difference is and at least there would be much more chance of getting a coalition majority and Boris and the Tories out of power. This episode is going to be the launch of our latest serious and we will also celebrate our 1st birthday. In other news Bandofla was really proud to sponsor our friends at Show Racism the Red Card and our logo is proudly featured in their latest 2022 calendar.
David Johnston, Conservative MP for Wantage in Oxfordshire, says he is unsurprised by criticism from the CBI over his party's levelling up agenda. Johnston also discusses his bill to enable electricity generators to become local electricity suppliers and tells Bloomberg's Caroline Hepker and Yuan Potts he is pleased the government is addressing social care. Paul Kearns, deputy CEO of Show Racism the Red Card, discusses why testimony from former cricket player Azeem Rafiq has shone such a light on racism at Yorkshire county cricket. He says the test for the English cricket board will be what they do once the heat dies down. Learn more about your ad-choices at https://www.iheartpodcastnetwork.com
In a week where racism in sport has dominated the headlines in the UK, England football legend John Barnes talks to Alex Salmond about his new book ‘The Uncomfortable Truth About Racism'. Barnes argues that to understand the origins of racism you have to look beyond the football and cricket stands, to the power structures in the boardrooms and to Britain's colonial history.
Show Racism the Red Card's Shaka Hislop is joined by famed historian David Olusoga for a Black History Month special of the '25 for 25' podcast.David discusses growing up Black and British in the 1970s and 80s, his fascination with history, and the progress made in the fight against racism across his lifetime.
Shaka Hislop, Show Racism the Red Card honorary president, speaks with Colchester goalkeeper Shamal George in the latest ‘25 for 25' podcast, just weeks after George, 23, was racially abused whilst playing at Barrow.Shamal explains his initial reservation to report the incident, and his worries of bad it might have been had Colchester not won. They went on to beat Barrow 3-2.Shaka gave insight on the importance of loved ones when playing in the public eye, and the toll that racist abuse can take on players' partners, families, and friends.
In the eleventh episode of '25 for 25', Show Racism the Red Card's 25th anniversary podcast, Shaka Hislop speaks with former star boxing promoter Kellie Maloney.Kellie shocked the sport, and the world in 2014, when she announced she announced that she now identified as a woman and was undergoing gender reassignment surgery. The pair discuss Kellie's transition, her "previous life", and discrimination in sport and society.
Quite possibly the most random selection of subjects ever discussed on a Bandofla episode, but that is how we roll. Well, BREXIT needs to be discussed because only now people are beginning to see just how f*cked our economy and distribution infrastructure is. We will also highlight some more really didgy interviews by Government Ministers (but nothing new there). A special mention is given to two awesome charities: Show Racism the Red Card and Communication Workers Union Humaniterean Aid. We get a personal message from the honorary Show Racism Red Card President Shaka Hislop and we also hear from Lenny Crook on his epic 21-mile hike for CWUHA. Then we move across the Atlantic to report on the awful Heartbeat Bill, which will see almost all abortions banned in the state of Texas. Surely it is a woman's choice to make right? We will be throwing a bit of football into the mix as we report on the news that after three games Spurs have a maximum 100% record and are yet to concede a goal and their north London rivals are also 100% after three games and yet to score in 270 minutes of football. Spurs sit proudly at the top of the league and Arsenal are showing their strength by holding up everyone at the foot of the league! Don't worry Arsenal fans it is still early days! #HeartbeatBill #Texas #Cyprus #Larnaca #PCR #Arsenal #ShowRacismtheRedCard #WRD21 #CWUHA #CWU #DominicRaab #ShakaHislop

Shaka Hislop is a former Premier League and International player but definitely not your typical footballer. Shaka graduated from Howard University in the US in mechanical engineering and immediately interned at NASA studying with and learning from some of the brightest minds on the planet. Shaka played for Newcastle Utd, West Ham and Portsmouth under the likes Kevin Keegan and Harry Redknapp as well as alongside some of the most iconic names in English football history; Alan Shearer, Peter Beardsley, Les Ferdinand, Frank Lampard, Michael Carrick, Joe Cole and Rio Ferdinand. His ability to outsmart his opponents brought him and his teammates to the brink of 2 Premier League titles with Newcastle Utd in the 1990s and at West Ham only Steven Gerrard's iconic equalising goal from 35 yards in injury time stopped West Ham from winning the FA Cup in 2006. Shaka proudly represented his country Trinidad & Tobago in their famous debut at the World Cup in that same year, which rounded off an incredible footballing career. As the honorary president and Founder of ‘Show Racism the Red Card', he has been involved in the vital anti-racism education of nearly 1 Million school children and currently works for ESPN in America on their coverage of English football. “It strips you entirely of your dignity, of your feeling of any kind of self-worth” – Shaka Hislop on receiving racist abuse Former Newcastle United and Trinidad and Tobago goalkeeper Shaka Hislop joins us in the week that Show Racism the Red Card launched in South Africa. The organisation is the UK’s largest anti-racism educational charity and it was formed twenty five years ago following a donation from Hislop. He recalls his own experiences of racism and discusses the abuse Manchester United’s Axel Tuanzebe and Anthony Martial suffered this week. Hislop is joined by Ged Grebby from Show Racism the Red Card and Busisuwe Nkosi from their new partners in South Africa – the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation. Together the three of them discuss their hopes for the new partnership and Nkosi gives us an insight into how racism still pervades a post-apartheid South Africa. The Austrian snowboarder competes in the event on Saturday and tells us she may attempt a cab triple underflip, which has never been done in competition before. Australian tennis player Li Tu joins us to talk about his hopes of replacing Andy Murray in next month’s Australian Open. Tu was a top junior player and represented his country in Davis Cup before falling out of love with the sport and taking a six year break. The 24-year-old returned to competition in August and is the in-form domestic player in Australia after winning a number of tournaments. He doesn’t have a world ranking, but that hasn’t stopped people in Australia calling for him to receive the wildcard that Murray has given up. British Para Powerlifter Zoe Newson tells us about forming a support bubble with her parents so she can continue to train ahead of the Tokyo Paralympics. The two-time medallist also discusses her journey into the sport, how she balances competing and motherhood and how she’s trying to ignore all the noise around a possible cancellation of the games. In Sporting Witness, we go back to 2004 when Mianne Bagger of Denmark became the first transgender woman to play in a professional golf tournament. Bagger reflects on playing in the Australian Women's Open in Sydney, in what was a landmark moment for trans sport and made headlines around the world. And – the BBC’s Vicki Sparks joins us live from Goodison Park ahead of the early game in the Premier League between Everton and Newcastle. What do you get when you wake up and find that everything is based on race? If you don't conclude that race is an issue, then you haven't been paying attention. Racism in American Politics is the driving force behind the division of the American Electorate. When we are divided we are easier to control and to get our votes. Politicians have moved away from the color blind society dreamed of by the greats such as King and Kennedy, and have begun to use the divisive methods of creating voting blocks based on ethnic and racial expectations. The end result will not be good for us or the USA.
