This week I'm speaking with Julz Beresford, a traditional painter from the countryside of rural New South Wales! Having grown up immersed in the outdoors, Julz's intent with her work is for the audience to feel engaged with the energy of the landscape and to embody how it feels to be there. We go through what it looks like to be a plein air artist, using your environment for endless inspiration, her philosophy and journey with creating art and the positive effect aging has had on her practice.Learn about Julz's current exhibition with Michael Reid here. If you need to hire 1 person, hire a team of people, or transform your business through Talent or Technical Services, Insight Global's team of 30,000 people around the world have the hustle and grit to deliver. www.InsightGlobal.com/LearningLeader Chris Beresford-Hill is the Worldwide Chief Creative Officer at BBDO. Previously he spent 2 years as North America President and CCO of Ogilvy, where he helped bring the agency and its clients a new level of relevance. He brought Workday to the Super Bowl, led the team that brought in the Verizon account, and one of the biggest Super Bowl campaigns ever, “Can't B Broken,” featuring Beyonce, and created the most celebrated Super Bowl campaign of 2024, the social & influencer lead "Michael CeraVe," for CeraVe. Chris and his teams have won every award for creativity and effectiveness many times over. He has been included in ADWEEK Best Creatives, the ADWEEK 100, and Business Insider's Most Creative People in Advertising. Notes: Cold Emails: Be specific in your praise and specific in your ask. The lame "Can I pick your brain" type emails get deleted and ignored because they aren't specific. You never need permission to take responsibility. Chris learned this from Ed Catmull's book Creativity Inc.… And he's embodied this his entire career. The people who build huge careers take ownership of their own and regularly solve problems and improve their clients' and colleagues' lives. Chris has done this since his early days as an intern. At any level taking on responsibility yourself, unasked, makes you stand out. Competence combined with insane follow-through. For some clients, it takes 50 ideas to get to the one that will work. Creating a culture where the team can share all of their bad ideas safely to get to the one great one. The creative process: Brain dump everything. Purge your brain of everything it has. When you think you're done, you're not. There's more. You have to get it all out. "A lot of creative people aren't fully aware of the process or the structure, they just feel it (Rick Rubin). "When you can see it lift off the page, you feel a sense of mastery over it." Chris's first Super Bowl commercial -- Emerald Nuts. He won it because he was both funny and added the fact that the product provided energy. Most people only covered one part, Chris did both. Push your edges - Chris is like Lionel Messi. He's always walking around in the office, asking questions, looking for ideas, being curious. Then he sees an opportunity and goes for it 100%. Chris has a standing reservation every week at the same restaurant where he meets with a mentor, mentee, or peer to deepen the important relationships in his life. That would be a good idea for us all to do. Chris was pen-pals with Dave Matthews for 8 years. Chris saw that they recorded at Bearsville studios and wrote a letter to Dave there. He also said, "Show up with gifts." He gave Dave a Beatles Bootlegged album. A leader takes what comes and then turns it into an opportunity. The formula is Competence + Insane Follow-Through. How to build relationships: Meet with people in person. Get drunk with them. Do hard work with them. Go through something bad with them. Laugh with them. I got hired from my internship by cold calling Mark Cuban to get him to approve of using his name in an ad. The best ideas are often bad in their first moments, or massively wrong, and then someone flips it or unlocks it. You have to stay on things and play around. I made my first ad by going through a garbage can to learn how to write a script and sending a bunch of Budweiser scripts to my boss. The art of finding an idea on the edge of possible, and the value of going over your skis when on the cusp of greatness - having a stomach for it. I've told a lie to keep things moving on every great campaign I was part of. I learned the best lesson in leadership when we lost our biggest account (Accenture). I put Danny Meyer's mentality into practice, and we took that moment to put the business and clients second and play for each other. Culture carried us. Culture is built by the stories we tell and the behaviors we highlight.

Louise is an actress, writer, comedian and Mountview graduate who has worked across the West End and many comedy circuits across the country. She has worked extensively with Mischief Theatre company who are behind not only Magic Goes Wrong, but, The Play That Goes Wrong and Peter Pan goes Wrong among many other sketches. Some you may have seen on the Royal Variety and Comic Relief over the last few years. Louise discusses her love for comedy, how to keep it fresh for each performance and that each night is different. Every audience will react in a separate way, that is completely normal, and you shouldn't worry if a joke lands differently than it did the previous night. Comedy is so subjective and some people will find you funnier than others. Look out for some of our darker jokes later in the episode and how comedy can occur at any moment, even at the times you LEAST expect! I first saw Louise at the Criterion Theatre for a rehearsed reading one of Sarah Milton's newest plays “Pa(Rental)”. I encourage all actors both in or out of drama school to attend these events, not only to hear new writing but to network fellow actors in the business. Interview with Terry Lynch, CEO of Power NickelOur previous interview: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/posts/power-nickel-tsxvpnpn-24m-drilling-program-on-major-polymetallic-discovery-5493Recording date: 10th September 2024Power Nickel is emerging as a compelling investment opportunity in the junior mining sector, driven by its potentially world-class polymetallic discovery in Quebec's James Bay region. The company's NISK project, particularly the recently discovered Lion Zone, has attracted significant attention and investment from industry leaders, positioning Power Nickel for potential substantial growth.Power Nickel's investment case is built on several key strengths. The company's Lion Zone has shown impressive high-grade polymetallic mineralization, with CEO Terry Lynch reporting that over half of the 29 holes drilled have yielded "seriously great hits of like almost 10% copper equivalent," significantly enhancing the project's economic potential. Financially, Power Nickel is well-positioned, having recently raised $20 million from prominent investors including Robert Friedland and Rob McEwen, providing an 18-month runway for aggressive exploration without near-term financing pressures. The addition of Dr. Steve Beresford, a renowned polymetallic deposit specialist, brings invaluable expertise to the team, with Dr. Beresford comparing the Lion Zone's potential to the world-famous Norilsk deposit. Power Nickel is employing cutting-edge exploration techniques, including downhole EM surveys and ambient noise tomography, maximizing efficiency and discovery potential. The NISK project's strategic location in mining-friendly Quebec offers excellent infrastructure and year-round operational potential. The deposit's diverse metal mix, including nickel, copper, gold, and platinum group metals, provides natural hedging against price volatility and aligns with growing demand for energy transition metals. Investors can look forward to near-term catalysts including regular drill results and a resource update planned for Q1 2024. Finally, the project benefits from favorable macro trends, including increasing demand for critical metals and growing interest in secure, ESG-friendly resource projects in stable jurisdictions. While Power Nickel offers significant upside potential, investors should be aware of the risks inherent in junior mining exploration. These include geological uncertainties, metal price volatility, potential future dilution, and the long lead times typically associated with mine development. The company's strong financial position, high-grade discovery, expert team, and strategic location distinguish it from many peers in the junior mining space. The backing of industry leaders like Friedland and McEwen lends additional credibility to the project's potential. As exploration progresses, key milestones to watch include the expansion of known mineralization, potential new discoveries within the project area, and the upcoming resource update. Additionally, given the scale and potential of the project, there may be opportunities for strategic partnerships or investments from major mining companies. For investors seeking exposure to the dynamic world of mineral exploration and the critical metals needed for the global energy transition, Power Nickel represents an intriguing opportunity. However, as with any junior mining investment, careful due diligence and risk management are essential. The company's progress over the coming months will be crucial in determining whether it can transform its promising start into a truly world-class mineral deposit.View Power Nickel's company profile: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/companies/power-nickelSign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com

Filmmaker, critic, video essayist and author Scout Tafoya joins the show to discuss the work of undersung journeyman Bruce Beresford and his brilliant 1991 film 'Black Robe', a story of faith, the frontier, and the church as a pernicious vestige of the European colonial project. Set amidst the 17th Century French conquests of North America in modern-day Quebec, the film follows the titular Black Robe, Father Laforgue, a Jesuit Missionary tasked with bringing Christianity to the indigenous populations of the region. As he ventures deep into Huron territory with his company of Algonquin guides, the limits of his faith and reason are tested, as it becomes clear that his beliefs and the promises they supposedly carry can find no purchase with a people who have no need for them. Greenlit in the wake of the success of 'Dances With Wolves' and cashing in on an exceptional amount of goodwill Beresford had accrued after directing the Academy Award-winning 'Driving Miss Daisy', the film is a brilliant study of self-deception, and the profoundly human impulses of one's perceptions of the divine. We discuss Beresford as filmmaker, his history as a contemporary of Australian greats Peter Weir and George Miller, and why his work deserves an immediate and vast reappraisal. Then, we discuss 'Black Robe', its exacting observations of faith and imperialism, and its unusually sensitive and well-researched portrayals of indigenous American tribes. Finally, we talk about other films in the canon of great portrayals of faith and the frontier, including Michael Mann's gorgeous 'The Last of the Mohicans' and Martin Scorsese's late-period masterpiece 'Silence'. We see the term "female empowerment" throughout mainstream media and it is referenced often in our culture today. This could be defined as believing in yourself or looking within to find the power to succeed. But what happens when we grow weary by trying to do it all in our own power? What happens when we come to the end of ourselves? Jesus offers a better way. In this episode, we are talking about being empowered by Christ. My guest, Becky Beresford, used to believe and even promoted some of society's lies to women. Our culture has been lying to women. The world defines female empowerment as believing in yourself or looking within to find the power to succeed. But what happens when women grow weary from trying to do it all? Jesus offers a better way. Becky Beresford used to believe and even promoted some of society's lies to women. But in God's kindness, Becky came to the end of herself and embraced healing truth found in the Bible. Tired and frustrated with self-dependence, Becky wants to be God-dependent. In She Believed HE Could So She Did, Becky invites you to join her as she dismantles commonly held misconceptions and lies so we can live in real freedom and godly confidence. This is a brave journey toward freedom as we learn to experience Christ-centered empowerment–not by believing in ourselves . . . but by trusting in our faithful God. Becky devotes chapters to the most common messages promoted by our culture and gives readers dependable biblical truths grounded in the gospel: Believe in Your God vs. Believe in Yourself Speak THE truth vs. Speak Your Truth Follow Your King vs. Follow Your Heart You Be His vs. You Be You The Future is Found Together vs. The Future is Female And so much more! Together we will discover how to rely on the Holy Spirit in order to battle cultural lies, put the enemy in his place, and live boldly for Jesus. We will be lifted of the burden to find strength in ourselves and reassured of the hope, joy, and power that comes from living in Christ. We don't have to be the savior of our own stories. The Boomers have become notorious as a generation who are known to have reaped the rewards of the post-war boom but who appear to be more interested in travelling and enjoying themselves than supporting the next generation in their child-rearing struggles. Having a living parent who's 65 or older whilst raising a child under 18 is Pew Research's definition of someone in the Sandwich Generation. Being a Sandwich Generation parent in an ailing economy, means being pulled in many directions at the same time.Pew says 'not only do many provide care and financial support to their parents and their children, but nearly four-in-ten (38%) say both their grown children and their parents rely on them for emotional support.'In this episode we talk about the trials of the Sandwich Generation, and it's rather more nuanced than the headlines make it sound. We discuss how important it is for us all to build community, to have open discussions about our needs and expectations, and to live in the season of our life.GENERATION: PEW RESEARCH DEFINITIONGen Z – 1997 – 2012 Millennials were born between 1981 and 1996 Gen X were born between 1965 and 1980Boomers can be broken into two segments (Beresford research) – the first is 1946 and 1954 and the second is 1955-1964And the Silent Generation who were born between 1928 and 1945RESOURCES USED:https://www.pewresearch.org/social-trends/2013/01/30/the-sandwich-generation/#:~:text=A%20Profile%20of%20the%20Sandwich,are%20pulled%20in%20many%20directions.https://www.newsweek.com/who-are-sandwich-generation-children-caring-parents-1778400https://www.investopedia.com/terms/s/sandwichgeneration.asp#:~:text=The%20sandwich%20generation%2C%20in%20the,%2C%20adult%20children%2C%20and%20grandchildren.https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandwich_generation#Development_of_the_concept_and_definitionhttps://www.bbc.com/worklife/article/20210128-why-the-sandwich-generation-is-so-stressed-outhttps://www.washingtonpost.com/parenting/2023/03/22/caregivers-sandwich-generation/https://www.forbes.com/sites/jackkelly/2023/02/24/the-sandwich-generation-is-financially-taking-care-of-their-parents-kids-and-themselves/?sh=58da60602af4Support the showThanks for listening. Becky Beresford is the author of She Believed He Could, So She Did: Trading Culture's Lies For Christ-Centered Empowerment. She talks about stepping out of self-dependence that causes exhaustion, frustration, and confusion to a God-dependence that delivers freedom, confidence, strength, and peace. We don't have to be the savior of our own stories. https://www.beckyberesford.com/ Amazon Get the Serenity Journal Here! CONNECT WITH JAYME ON SOCIALS: Instagram l YouTube l Pinterest l Facebook

A conversation about the culture and the pursuit of contentment with Becky BeresfordTHE PURSUIT OF CONTENTMENTWelcome back to our miniseries on contentment. When I first found out I was expecting a little one, I had so many emotions they surprised me. I had planned to feel nothing but pure joy and ecstacy. However, I also felt some grief about the things I knew I would have to walk away from for a season. Now, don't get me wrong.I was overjoyed. Still, I recognized that every time I engaged with cultural values and got sucked into a vortex on social media, I started feeling as if I was falling behind. That couldn't be further from the truth, but if it is, who cares? We have to think critically about the messages we're accepting and adopting from the culture so that we can ensure they don't impede our ability to enjoy contentment.MEET BECKY BERESFORDBecky Beresford lives in North Carolina and is happily outnumbered by her husband and three wonderful boys. Support Lorenzo on Patreon.com Guest speaker: John Beresford PROGRAM NOTES: Dr. John Bereford delivering this talk in 2006 at the conference celebrating Albert Hofmann's 100th birthday. Today's program features a lecture by psychedelic researcher Dr. John Beresford. Here is Erowid's introduction to him: "British-born John Beresford began his psychedelic research interests in 1961, and shortly thereafter he resigned his post as an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at New York Medical College. In 1963 he founded the Agora Scientific Trust, the world's first research organization devoted to investigating the effects of LSD. In contrast to Leary's invitation to "tune in, turn on, and drop out", Beresford initially wanted to keep LSD as a tool of scientifically trained specialists. However, later in his life he adopted a viewpoint that was opposed to the medicalization of psychedelics." Of course, the story that he is best known for is the time that he wrote to Sandoz Laboratories and requested one gram of LSD! (If my math is correct, that's about 4,000 doses of 250 mics each.) Amazingly, Sandoz sent him a gram through the mail and attached a note that read, "Good luck." The talk we are about to listen to was given by Dr. Beresford at the conference celebrating Albert Hofmann's 100th birthday. He titled it: "Psychedelic Agents and the Structure of Consciousness: Stages in a Session Using LSD and DMT".

TAKEAWAYS: [5:00] Lucy shares a time where she lost her voice and had to rediscover it again. [6:10] How can you show up for yourself? How can you own your own voice? [7:30] What does Lucy mean to ‘have a voice'? [10:15] It's very hard for women who have experienced betrayal to have a voice. [12:10] When women get into relationships, their sense of self often gets drowned out. [19:40] It's so hard to stay committed to someone when you've had a small fight; much less a betrayal. [24:50] Unfortunately for addicts, they've hurt their best friend and partner and so they can not depend on this person (right now) for emotional support. [31:10] What do we unwillingly enable in someone else because of our own baggage and history? [34:35] You've consciously chosen to stay, now what? [40:45] Lucy talks about disclosed non-monogamy and what that means for a couple. [46:15] If your personality is being crushed and you're becoming a former version of yourself, when should you stop everything and listen? [50:00] A little bit about Lucy and her work/books.
