How is it that Chicago still lacks a city charter? We're chasing the answer to that question this week with Kam Buckner who represents the 26th District in the Illinois General Assembly. Rep. Buckner insists the city's lack of a constitution keeps us from any effective governance. In this episode, Lissa & Thom get to the heart of how Rep. Buckner's long and illustrious resume led him to Springfield. We'll hear how he's drafting a values document for city, and why he's been able to attract support from the left, the right, and the middle in the process. Kam shares lessons of wisdom from his father, a Chicago Police officer in the 1980s. As America votes, the polls tell the story. Sorta. Ben riffs. Kam Buckner offers his state of the union on this day of decision. Ben gets sentimental. Kam can relate. Our ancestors are talking to us. A word or two about gaslit north siders who have been brainwashed into hating Mayor Johnson. And then a word ot two about the leaderless Bears. Would they have destroyed Patrick Mahomes had they drafted him? Kam played Big 10 football—for Illinois. And is a state representative and proud Morgan Park High School graduate.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Jimmy Carter turns 100. Ben riffs. Kam Buckner offers some millenialistic riffs on President Carter. Conversation starts national, as in Harris v. Trump. Immigration as issue. VP debate preview. Then local. Mayor Johnson "versus" Pedro Martinez. State needs to step up on funding. Finally, Bears talk. Kam played football throughout college so he knows a thing or two or three about the game. And close with Kam schooling Ben on funding for Bears stadium. Kam is the state representative from the 26th legislative district, which includes Soldier Field. Last week, dignitaries from across the city and state celebrated the late Mayor Harold Washington, whose 100th birthday would have been April 15. Top Washington aides like Jacky Grimshaw and Josie Childs; contemporaries like Congressmen "Chuy" Garcia, Bobby Rush and former Congressman Luis Gutierrez, Cook County Circuit Court Chief Judge Timothy Evans and the Rev. Jesse Jackson; and top elected officials like Gov. J.B. Pritzker, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, and current Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot all celebrated Washington's life and legacy at his namesake library downtown. Hanging over all of it? Politics, of course. Mayor Lori Lightfoot has yet to officially declare her reelection bid, but is raising money, staffing up her campaign, and so far, playing defense. Other candidates to become Chicago's next mayor in 2023 are already lining up. Businessman Willie Wilson and current Ald. Ray Lopez are both running. Congressman Mike Quigley is polling. Former Chicago Public Schools CEO Paul Vallas and state Rep. Kam Buckner both say they're contemplating a run. Any number of spoilers could jump in over the coming months. On this week's show, we're talking lessons in tough campaigns and leadership with Marilyn Katz. She was a media consultant for Harold Washington's historic run in 1983. A progressive activist throughout the late '60s, she joined the rainbow coalition of Washington backers, helping deliver captivating ads that brought him over the finish line in the 1983 primary against Jane Byrne and Richard M. Daley, and then the general election against Republican Bernie Epton. She'll share her memories of that campaign and Washington's leadership style when he took over the 5th floor at City Hall, and what lessons Lightfoot might take from him to hold on to her seat.

With everything going on in the world today, Kam's story and message are very much needed and I'm thankful to have the opportunity to discuss Name, Image & Likeness with him today. #GoFURTHER
