New Washington law making clergy mandatory reporters of abuse draws investigation by US Justice Department

Earlier this month, Washington Gov. Bob Ferguson signed a bill into law that now requires clergy to be mandatory reporters of child abuse or neglect. Under SB 5375, clergy in Washington must report suspected abuse or neglect to authorities even if they learn of it during so-called penitential communications, such as confessions. The bill was first introduced in 2023 after reporting by InvestigateWest described how a lack of a mandatory reporting requirement for clergy in Washington may have played a role in helping Jehovah’s Witnesses in the state hide allegations of child sexual abuse.   As reported earlier by InvestigateWest, the U.S. Department of Justice announced it is opening an investigation into SB 5375, which it claims appears to violate the free exercise of religion under the First Amendment. Joining us to discuss the new law is the bill’s sponsor, Democratic Washington state Sen. Noel Frame, who represents Seattle in the state’s 36th Legislative District.

“If you want to make change, you've got to make noise.” A call to action in the political sense conveys boldness and focus. It's about drawing attention and speaking loudly about one's convictions, with a sense of urgency and persistence. To longtime outspoken advocate and US Senator Ron Wyden, that's what you'd call chutzpah – and his upcoming book sets out to inspire that same quality of action-driven audacity in Americans of all ages. It Takes Chutzpah: How to Fight Fearlessly for Progressive Change acts as a reflection of Wyden's decades of public service and as a motivational manifesto to push people forward. Noted throughout his career in government for championing civil rights, sensible ideas, and strategic alliances that strive to get pressing bills passed, Wyden understands the importance of strong, loud community and charting new pathways. In It Takes Chutzpah, Wyden explores the long history of the Yiddish word chutzpah, the many interpretations of it across Jewish culture, and how he sees the trait as a tool to reclaim idealism and enact positive change. Wyden compels individuals and groups alike to look at the objectives before them with this boldness in mind, as well as conviction in their values. Wyden touches on the importance of free speech, healthcare, reproductive rights, a clean environment, and regulating the impacts of Big Tech throughout his political tenure. He explores how campaigning for the preservation of those values has been bolstered over the years– and even offers “Ron's 12 Rules of Chutzpah” as a guide to defying convention and achieving progress. It Takes Chutzpah stresses that unapologetic volume and the nerve to keep fighting can prove crucial in accomplishing goals, creating allies, and moving brazenly forward together. Ron Wyden is an American politician and longtime advocate in the areas of civil rights, internet freedom, healthcare, and more. He currently serves as the senior United States senator from Oregon and Chair of the Senate Committee on Finance. He has previously held positions in the U.S. House of Representatives and as the Chair of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources. State Representative Liz Berry represents Washington's 36th Legislative District, located in the shadow of Seattle's Space Needle. She is a passionate advocate for ending gun violence, combating plastic pollution, and standing up for working families and consumers against powerful special interests. A lifelong champion for women in leadership and reproductive justice, Rep. Berry served as president of the National Women's Political Caucus of Washington and as a board member for Pro-Choice Washington. She is the former Legislative Director to U.S. Rep. Gabby Giffords. Rep. Berry lives with her husband and two young children in Queen Anne.  Buy the Book It Takes Chutzpah: How to Fight Fearlessly for Progressive Change Elliott Bay Book Company

Trump is not just a flimflam man. He's a flipflopping flimflam man. It's mind-boggling how much has happened since I recorded my last podcast a week ago.  Casting off our long-term allies, jumping in bed with Russia, starting a trade war with our biggest trading partners, crashing Wall Street, tanking world financial markets, pissing off consumers—and lying about all of it during a joint session of Congress on primetime TV. Wow, Trump had a big week! Oh, I almost forgot to mention that – also this week—we learned that several states have measles outbreaks. The upside of the measles outbreaks is that DOGE has rehired some of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) staff they fired. Perhaps we do need a few public health people! (Will Arizona have a measles outbreak? We have the same personal exemption for vaccines that Texas does.) So much winning!Ugh … pass the anti-depressants before RFK Jr. outlaws them!  Today's episode features a wide-ranging interview with three long-time political authors from Blog for Arizona.  Tucson lawyer and former prosecutor Michael Bryan founded Blog for Arizona more than 20 years ago. B4AZ has been published continuously since then. Retired lawyer and former newspaper journalist, Larry Bodine is the past chair of the Legislative District 18 Democrats in Pima County and has been on the Board of Democrats of Greater Tucson for five years, including three years as president. Phoenician David Gordon has had a career in education and is a successful science fiction author, in addition to being a prolific political blogger. On this episode of the Defense Tech Underground, Representative Wittman and Representative Ryan discuss the launch of the bipartisan Defense Modernization Caucus and early wins from the caucus in the 2025 NDAA. They explain the challenges for the Pentagon to move from a hardware centric organization to a software centric one, and discuss opportunities for the caucus to drive impact in defense innovation.  This episode is hosted by Jeff Phaneuf and Helen Phillips.    Congressman Wittman:  Congressman Rob Wittman was first elected to the United States Congress to serve Virginia's First Congressional District in 2007. While in office, he has focused on strengthening our military and supporting our nation's veterans, promoting a flourishing economy through fiscal responsibility and pro-growth policies, fixing our crumbling infrastructure, increasing access to high-speed internet, and promoting workforce development through Career and Technical Education (CTE) and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) programs. In the U.S. Congress, Congressman Wittman serves as vice chairman of both the House Armed Services Committee and the House Natural Resources Committee, where he is well-positioned to represent the needs of Virginia's First District. He has earned a strong reputation for being an advocate for our men and women in uniform and for being a champion of the Chesapeake Bay. Congressman Wittman was re-elected for his ninth full term in the U.S. House of Representatives in November 2024 and prior to that, he served in several levels of government. Congressman Wittman won his first campaign for public office in 1986 when he was elected to the Montross Town Council, where he served for 10 years, four of them as mayor. In 1995, he was elected to the Westmoreland County Board of Supervisors and was elected its chairman in 2003. In 2005, voters in the 99th Legislative District elected Rob to the Virginia House of Delegates, where he served until his election to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2007. Prior to his election to Congress, Rob spent 26 years working in state government, most recently as field director for the Virginia Health Department's Division of Shellfish Sanitation. Earlier in his career, he worked as an environmental health specialist for local health departments in Virginia's Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula regions. He holds a Ph.D. in Public Policy and Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University, a Master of Public Health degree in Health Policy and Administration from the University of North Carolina, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Virginia Tech.   Congressman Ryan:  Congressman Pat Ryan is a fifth-generation Hudson Valley native, proud Kingston High School alum, and the first West Point graduate to represent the Academy in the U.S. House of Representatives. Ryan served two combat tours in Iraq, earning two Bronze Stars. Prior to his 2022 election to Congress, Ryan served the community that raised him as Ulster County Executive. There, Ryan led the County through the COVID-19 pandemic and spearheaded policies that delivered relief to working families while never raising taxes. He led the charge to revitalize the former IBM site, now known as iPark 87, helped put money back in small business owners and residents' pockets, took on corporate special interests, and delivered new investments in mental health services. In Congress, Ryan is focused on defending fundamental freedoms and delivering relief for Hudson Valley families. Serving on the House Armed Services Committee, Ryan is working on issues of military preparedness, countering the threat of a rising China, and investing in the United States Military Academy and the next generation of military leaders. As a member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, Ryan is committed to improving the daily lives of all residents in NY-18. Whether you commute to work on Metro North, travel Route 17 through Orange County, or need broadband access in Dutchess County, he will fight every day to improve our region's infrastructure. Ryan has also championed efforts to expand access to affordable health care, support local law enforcement, preserve Social Security and Medicare, prevent gun violence, and protect a woman's right to choose. Come January, when lawmakers sit down for the new legislative term in Olympia , there will be several new faces. More than a dozen legislators make up the new freshman class, and they’ll be facing what some have described as a ‘perfect storm’: the state is bracing for an anticipated 10 to 12 billion dollar budget gap. It’s been nearly 15 years since Washington faced a fiscal shortfall this significant. Back then, at the center of finding the cuts, and compromises, to deal with it -- was state representative and then-Speaker of the House -- Frank Chopp, of Washington’s 43rd Legislative District. But lawmakers won’t be drawing on Chopp’s negotiating expertise this time around. He announced back in March that he would not be running for reelection. Throughout his tenure in Olympia, Chopp championed new laws related to housing, homelessness, and mental health – still just as relevant today as when he was first elected, in 1994. While appearing on HBO's Real Time, Ruhle revealed she'll be voting for Harris and believes Donald Trump is unfit to serve—so, obviously this interview will be fair and objective… 6:30pm- Senate Releases Report on Trump Assassination Attempt. Victor Nava and Josh Christenson of The New York Post write: “The Secret Service agent in charge of Donald Trump's July 13 rally in Butler, Pa., was made aware of ‘credible intelligence' of a threat against the former president—but didn't pass it along to her supervisor or others planning security for the event, a Senate report on the assassination attempt found. The 94-page report on the shooting, released Wednesday by the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, determined that the Secret Service's lead advance agent for the Trump rally wrote in a security planning document that there was ‘no adverse intelligence' concerning the 45th president's visit to Butler—despite being notified of an unspecified threat. Furthermore, the lead agent told Senate investigators that she notified the special agent in charge (SAIC) of the Secret Service's Pittsburgh field office about the “credible intelligence” before the rally—but he claims that never happened.” You can read the full article here: https://nypost.com/2024/09/25/us-news/lead-secret-service-agent-at-trumps-butler-rally-knew-of-credible-intelligence-of-threat-but-didnt-raise-alarm-senate-report-finds/ 6:40pm- Secret Service Agent Called Toll-Free Drone Hotline Before Assassination Attempt. Michael Ruiz and David Spunt of Fox News write: “A preliminary report on the July 13 assassination attempt on former President Trump from the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs ripped into newly revealed missteps that went into the Secret Service's planning and execution of security at the event during which a spectator was killed, two others were seriously wounded and the GOP candidate was struck on the ear. Among the key failures, an agent inexperienced with drone equipment called a toll-free tech support hotline for help after a request ahead of time for additional unmanned assets was denied, according to a preliminary summary of findings made public Wednesday. According to the committee, he had just an hour of informal training with the device.” You can read the full article here: https://www.foxnews.com/us/trump-assassination-attempt-inexperienced-secret-service-agent-flying-drone-called-toll-free-number-help

Governor Wes Moore said the preliminary investigation “points to an accident” and that he hadn't seen any “credible evidence of a terrorist attack.” Speaking from the White House Tuesday afternoon, President Joe Biden echoed similar statements and vowed that the federal government “will pay for the entire cost of reconstructing the bridge.” 3:30pm- Speaking from Oakland, California, Independent presidential candidate Robert F. It does this by diminishing the functionality of its own messaging app and by diminishing the functionality of third party messaging apps. By doing so, Apple knowingly, and deliberately, degrades quality, privacy, and security for its users." Will voters punish him if he doesn't?
