Im Vorfeld gab es zahlreiche propagandistische Spekulationen. So berichteten die Ukrainer der New York Times, Trump werde Russlands Kontrolle über Odessa anerkennen. Zudem kursierten von Wunschdenken getriebene Gerüchte, Putin könnte die Kontrolle über das Kernkraftwerk Saporischschja (ZNPP) aufgeben. Nichts von dem geschah.Das Weiße Haus betonte in seiner Darstellung des Gesprächs der beiden Präsidenten, dass Trump Putin dazu gebracht habe, Angriffe auf die Energieinfrastruktur in der Ukraine 30 Tage auszusetzen. Mit dieser Einwilligung hatte sich Putin jedoch nichts vergeben, da derartige Angriffe aktuell keine zentrale Rolle mehr in Russlands Militärstrategie spielen.
