Der »Weimarer Waisenvater« Johannes Daniel Falk, der zum Vorbild zahlreicher Pädagogen avancierte, wurde neben seiner sozialen Arbeit auch als Liederdichter populär. Von ihm stammt nämlich das bekannte deutsche Weihnachtslied »O du fröhliche«. Dieses Lied komponierte Falk um das Jahr 1815 herum für seine Waisenkinder, von denen er inzwischen ungefähr 500 bei sich aufgenommen hatte. Das Lied sollte den Kindern die Grundlagen des christlichen Glaubens näherbringen und Weihnachten, Ostern und Pfingsten miteinander verbinden. Das Thema des Liedes ist, dass Gottes Liebe uns trotz aller Traurigkeit und Not Grund zur Freude schenkt: »Welt ging verloren, / Christ ist geboren, / freue dich, o Christenheit.« Grundlage für diese Freude ist, dass Jesus mit seiner Auferstehung den Tod überwunden hat: »Welt liegt in Banden, / Christ ist erstanden.«Heute singen wir nur noch die erste Strophe nach dem ursprünglichen Text. Die zwei weiteren Strophen wurden von Heinrich Holzschuher 1829 umgeschrieben und »O du fröhliche« somit gänzlich in ein Weihnachtslied umgewandelt.Johannes Falk lebte in einer schweren Zeit, er erlebte Krankheit, Hunger und Krieg. Bemerkenswert ist, dass er trotz vieler Schicksalsschläge über die Freude in Jesus Christus singen und schreiben konnte. Er erlebte, wie Gott ihm ein fester Halt war und ihm die nötige Kraft gab, seine schwere Aufgabe als Vater für so viele Waisenkinder zu erfüllen. Er kannte eine Freude, die unabhängig von äußeren Umständen ist, weil Jesus Christus der unveränderliche Mittelpunkt seines Lebens war. Das schwergeprüfte, aber dennoch reich erfüllte Leben Falks endete verhältnismäßig früh mit 58 Jahren durch eine Blutvergiftung.
