In 1900, the the newly Flannan isle lighthouse was staffed by three lightkeepers. In December of that year a passing ship noticed the light was out at the light house and shortly after reporting the issue, a supply ship was sent to investigate. When they approached the island, everything was quiet with no sign of life. The mystery would only grow once they landed on the island and entered the lighthouse.Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/cosmicsponge)
January of 1959 a group of Soviet hikers head out in the Northern Ural Mountains in the USSR on a ski/hike/camping expedition. The group never returned and nobody ever saw them alive again. The injuries to the bodies were gruesome, unsettling, and unexplained. This is one case that will keep you guessing. sources Mountain of the Dead, The Dyatlov Pass Incident by KEITH MCCLOSKEY | 9780752491486 | Booktopia Dyatlov Pass -- www.dayatlovpass.com Zinaida Kolmogorova Autopsy - Dyatlov Pass Incident (ermakvagus.com) Have Scientists Finally Unraveled the 60-Year Mystery Surrounding Nine Russian Hikers' Deaths? | Smart News | Smithsonian Magazine

(copy the link to share with your friends and family via text) The Dyatlov Pass incident resulted in nine unsolved, mysterious deaths; Keith McCloskey attempts to decipher the bizzare events that led up to that night and the subsequent aftermathIn January 1959, 10 experienced young skiers set out to travel to a mountain named Mount Otorten in the far north of Russia. Otorten translates to "don't go there" in the local Mansi language. During the trip, one of the skiers fell ill and returned. The remaining nine lost their way and ended up on another mountain slope known as Kholat Syakhl, or "Mountain of the Dead." On the night of February 1, 1959, something or someone caused the skiers to flee their tent in terror, using knives to slash their way out instead of using the entrance. When they failed to return home, search parties were sent out and their bodies were found, some with massive internal injuries but all without external marks. The autopsy report showed that the injuries were caused by "an unknown compelling force." Subsequently, the area was sealed off for years by the authorities and the deaths and events of that night remained unexplained. Benefiting from original research carried out in Russia, this book attempts to explain what happened to the nine skiers who lost their lives in what has come to be known as the "Dyatlov Pass Incident." In January 1959, ten experienced young skiers set out for Mount Otorten in the far north of Russia. While one of the skiers fell ill and returned., the remaining nine lost their way and ended up on another mountain slope known as Kholat Syakhl (or ‘Mountain of the Dead'). On the night of 1 February 1959 something or someone caused the skiers to flee their tent in such terror that they used knives to slash their way out. Search parties were sent out and their bodies were found, some with massive internal injuries but with no external marks on them. The autopsy stated the violent injuries were caused by ‘an unknown compelling force'. The area was sealed off for years by the authorities and the full events of that night remained unexplained. Using original research carried out in Russia and photographs from the skier's cameras, author and researcher Keith McCloskey joins us today to explore what happened to the nine young people who lost their lives in the mysterious ‘Dyatlov Pass Incident'. All of the known negatives taken from the group's cameras were examined in great detail. What they show is that not only were the group present on Mountain of the Dead that last night, but they were also watching something that was going on in the night sky. Keith also discusses the Mansi, the tribes people of the area, their spiritual beliefs and folklore and how they fit into the mystery. In the plus show Keith discusses the occurrences of lights in the sky in the area including meteors and how the bodies gave off traces of radiation and what he believes this to indicate. Theories of KGB involvement. A boat arrives to the Eilean Mor island to swap shifts with the lighthouse keepers. When the relief crew arrived, the current keepers couldn't be found anywhere. The scene in the lighthouse struck them as odd, but nothing led to anything that explained what happened to the three men. Most everyone familiar with the tragedy of Dyatlov Pass believes that whatever mysterious and strange event occurred, not all of the details have been shared by the Russian government. Tonight, we speak with Keith McCloskey, author of two books about the subject, "Mountain of the Dead: The Dyatlov Pass Incident" and "Journey to Dyatlov Pass: An Explanation of the Mystery" who has also traveled to the site for his research. We'll hear about his hypotheses and the current state of his efforts to petition the Russian courts to reexamine the case and declassify any previously unreleased information. We first spoke with Keith for our coverage on the Flannan Isles Lighthouse mystery and trust that he will bring the same diligent investigation and keen observations into solving this unfortunate riddle once and for all. Many people enjoy a good mystery. However, mysteries often leave us slightly disturbed and unsettled, because we're also always searching for answers and when we look for answers, we're sometimes comforted the most by the simplest explanations. With the case of the Flannan Isle Lighthouse Keepers, most are willing to accept that a massive "Rogue Wave" swept the three men into oblivion. But what if meteorological science matched against clues left from the scene could show that this theory may not be the most plausible? What if several simple, yet extreme events combined to plunge this mystery into the depths of the unexplained? Join us tonight as we interview Keith McCloskey, author of the book, The Lighthouse: The Mystery of the Eilean Mòr Lighthouse Keepers. We'll discuss his in-depth research into the case and the possibility that the simplest explanations, while the easiest to accept, are often not where the real truth lies submerged. Mysteries are a rarity in our world. What used to be unexplainable is now quickly answered by the modern marvels of technology and science. So when a new mystery appears, we drive ourselves crazy searching for an explanation, haunted by what we can’t explain. One modern mystery is reasoning behind the strange events that took place on a Siberian mountain in 1959, in which a group of experienced hikers were found dead in bizarre circumstances. Since the day of the discovery, many have been tormented by one simple question: What happened on Dyatlov Pass? Was it a Yeti, an avalanche, a top secret military test gone horribly wrong that killed the group? Or was it something simply incomprehensible to modern listeners– an ill-fated encounter with goddesses and myths of old? Episode Highlights: Dyatlov Pass Incident: Ski Tourists in Siberia The search begins First disturbing discoveries Nine sets of footprints in the snow Charred and frozen bodies Conflicting and confusing evidence Timeline of events: What went wrong?
