Ode to Hip-Hop chronicles the journey with profiles of fifty albums that have defined, expanded, and ultimately transformed the genre into what it is today. So much of the coverage of hip-hop's 50th birthday has been congratulatory, in spite of its record of misogyny and anti-LGBTQ sentiment. In this episode of Into It, host Sam Sanders talks to journalist Kiana Fitzgerald about how the women of hip-hop are leading the way today, and he catches up with hip-hop scholar Jason England, who argues hip-hop's midlife crisis has left an empty shell of what the genre once was. So much of the coverage of hip-hop's 50th birthday has been fawning. Congratulatory. Devoid of meaningful critique. All that despite the fact that the art form has been soaked through with misogyny and homophobia from day one. So how do you celebrate hip-hop's accomplishments while asking it to do better? Sam talks to journalist Kiana Fitzgerald, author of Ode to Hip-Hop, on how the women of hip-hop are leading the way today… but at what cost? And he catches up with hip-hop scholar Jason England, assistant professor of English at Carnegie Mellon University, who argues hip-hop's midlife crisis has left an empty shell of what the genre once was. Words like 'unhinged,' 'insane,' and 'psychotic' have all been used to describe Kanye West's behavior in recent weeks. Outbursts, twitter pleas to his wife, Kim Kardashian, and threats to her current boyfriend Pete Davidson have been met with understandable alarm. There's also been a rush to pass judgement accompanied by potentially dangerous and demonizing language when it comes to his mental health. West has been public about his bipolar disorder in recent years. While Ye's condition is not an excuse for harassment or dangerous behavior we should exercise caution and be very clear in how we characterize and talk about his bipolar disorder. We look at bipolar disorder, the stigmatizing language used to describe West, and more with freelance journalist Kiana Fitzgerald who recently wrote, “Bipolar disorder is complicated. So is how we talk about Ye” for Vox.

For a lot of people, the last thing on their minds when they're going through a depressive episode is sex. That rings true for writer Kiana Fitzgerald, but when it comes to her bipolar I disorder, well, that's where things get a little more complicated. What does it feel like to have sex during a manic episode, and how can you really tell the difference between when you're feeling hypersexual (a likely symptom of bipolar) or when you're just feeling horny? Kiana walks us through her experience with bipolar disorder, pleasure, and love...something she had a taste of during probably one of the most defining moments in her life: her first manic episode. Kiana Fitzgerald is an American journalist, podcaster, DJ, and mental health awareness, advocate. I actually linked with her nearly a year ago after I read her fantastic piece on Kanye West's public statements surrounding his bipolar diagnosis and how his unveiling of this was important for her own development. Kiana has a very active social media presence which she uses to share her personal experience of bipolar and de-stigmatise non-ordinary states of consciousness. Hearing her take on episodes of mania is something I find fascinating and beautiful and I think many of you will also! She describes these episodes as portals towards a deeper truth, and touching this truth has made her feel closer to God while eradicating a fear of death. Kiana's honesty around this still misunderstood condition will certainly help expand one's understanding.https://www.kianafitz.com/p/about.html?m=1https://www.vibe.com/features/editorial/kanye-west-jesus-is-king-and-the-unspoken-bipolarism-in-between-663718/amp/?__twitter_impression=true
