This episode looks at solutions for when screens and devices like tablets are causing conflict in the home, especially when it is time for them to be turned off! Siblings will often find themselves in conflict over devices and screen time, whether arguments over whose turn it is, jealousy over differing time allowances and scenarios wherein the younger sibling is a thorn in the side of the older sibling. Therapist, author and leading expert on youth and family dynamics, Laura Kastner, PhD, shares her expertise on behavioral management, and how it relates to sibling fights. Also, author Emily Cherkin, MEd and researcher Caroline Fitzpatrick, PhD, share more ideas on preventing and responding to screen related meltdowns, setting boundaries, and fostering emotional regulation in our kids. Practical tips include redirecting attention, “planned ignoring”, and creating family screen time/media plans (or rules) with little kids—not just teens. Are you up to your eyeballs in holiday things? It's our second to last episode of the season, can you believe it? We want to inspire you and give you tips on how to make this holiday season AMAZING! Things we don't want your holiday season to be filled with.... Worry.... Stress.... Outbursts (from your or your kids)... We often look back and wonder how we survived the holidays with so many kids, expectations, and events. As we look back on our 30+ years of holidays together, here are a few things we have learned: Recognize the unrealistic expectations and how to manage them What to do about “treats” during holidays Ways to “relax” and rest during the holiday craziness! Having a conversation about what is coming (prepare your kids for the crazy!) Parenting the dreams and disappointments regarding presents Making extended families houses feel like home Build your holiday culture by saying “no” to all the events This season is all about relationships. God sent his Son to earth for us, to make a way for us. This season is about building relationships and slowing down to recognize God's goodness. As parents, we get to come alongside our kids and see them, love them, and help them have their best season yet. The reason for the season is the ultimate relationships, Jesus. When we point our kids to Jesus, the whole season takes on a different tone and we enjoy it in our souls. He brings us delight and that is what the season is all about. “Choose to delight in your kids and show them the delight of this season.” - Suz

In this episode, I answer a question from Tammy in Canada about a 9-year-old child who is well-behaved in settings like school and sports, but has outbursts, hits parents, swears, and calls names when experiencing big emotions at home. The child then deals with a lot of shame afterwards. I explain that when a child is dysregulated predominantly at home but regulated everywhere else, it usually means the child treats the people who provide the most unconditional love and acceptance the worst. It's like a pressure cooker - the child holds it together everywhere else but lets it all out at home because they feel safe to fall apart there, knowing their parents will love them anyway. The key is for parents to use child-centered play therapy strategies at home - reflecting the child's feelings in the moment and setting appropriate limits. The child needs to build emotional vocabulary and self-esteem, which are universal outcomes of CCPT. With psychoeducation and training, parents can learn to sit in the pocket of the feeling with their child rather than trying to talk them out of their emotions. If you would like to ask me questions directly, check out www.ccptcollective.com, where I host two weekly Zoom calls filled with advanced CCPT case studies and session reviews, as well as member Q&A. In this episode, Dr. Tony Ebel discusses the root causes of behavioral issues in children from a neurological perspective. He explains how a perfect storm of factors including high stress pregnancy, birth interventions/trauma, and early exposure to medications can lead to a child's nervous system becoming stuck in a sympathetic dominant, fight-or-flight state. This dysregulation of the nervous system manifests as behavioral issues, ADHD, anxiety, and other challenges. Dr. Ebel emphasizes the importance of identifying these root causes and provides guidance on seeking help from a nervous system focused chiropractor to address the underlying neurological imbalances.Key Topics Covered:00:05:00 - Common attempts to address behavioral issues (diet changes, supplements, etc.) 00:08:00 - The real root cause: overstressed, sympathetic dominant nervous system 00:11:00 - Behavioral issues stem from nervous system dysregulation and exhaustion 00:14:00 - Determining if a child's behavioral issues are a real problem vs. normal development 00:17:00 - The perfect storm: factors that trigger nervous system stress and dysregulation00:22:00 - Dysautonomia and dyskinesis: neurological terms related to nervous system imbalance 00:24:00 - Proprioception: the role of movement in regulating the nervous system 00:26:00 - Subluxation: the physical misalignment and tension causing nervous system dysfunction 00:28:00 - Identifying behavioral issues: severity, frequency, and the perfect storm factors 00:30:00 - Finding answers: neurological insight scans and nervous system focused chiropractic care 00:32:00 - The importance of sharing this information with other parents seeking help-- Follow us on Socials: Instagram: @pxdocs Facebook: Dr. Tony Ebel & The PX Docs Network Youtube: The PX Docs For more information, visit PXDocs.com to read informative articles about the power of Neurologically-Focused Chiropractic Care. Recall a situation where you witnessed an adult overreacting. Did it catch you off-guard? Did it make you uneasy? A psychiatrist friend once shared a valuable insight with his team: "When you see a patient overreact or act out, always remember there's a story behind that behavior." Understanding this 'story' is crucial for caregivers dealing with individuals exhibiting frenetic or hyper behavior, as it allows them to approach the situation with empathy and patience. Adults don't lose self-control in a vacuum—there's a build-up and a story behind their behavior. When caregivers find themselves in the unpleasant predicament of engaging an individual with frenetic or hyper behavior, it's helpful to remember that the behavior is more significant than the moment. Reminding ourselves that "there's a story" enables us to speak to the deeper issues driving the outburst—which often requires assurance rather than reason. Arguing with a long-term wound is futile. Caring for that wound and its symptoms remains a more effective response. As caregivers, we encounter those panicking about pocket-sized problems. Outbursts of a temporary or minor problem are rooted in a long journey that could stretch back a lifetime. Detaching from the immediate eruption allows us to understand better and address the volcanic turbulence behind the explosion. However, it starts with us remembering, "If it's hysterical, it's historical" - and there's always a story behind the behavior. We are not makers of history. We are made by history. —Martin Luther King Jr.

Whether it's an older child with frequent tantrums, or an adult who easily loses their temper, I think of angry outbursts as a symptom with underlying root causes. While there may be triggers, someone's inability to regulate their emotions, in my experience, suggests a biochemical and/or inflammatory driver. In this episode, I'll discuss:* An important difference between angry outbursts and other symptoms.* The impact on the neuro-physiology of others.* Reasons this behavior may be enabled by others.* Associated diagnoses.* The four most common underlying physiologic factors that I see in my practice that appear to drive angry outburst.* What the presence or absence of remorse after a tantrum can tell us about underlying physiologic drivers. To receive the newsletter (text and audio) in your mailbox each week, subscribe at: https://www.courtneysnydermd.com oron Substack:Medical Disclaimer:This newsletter is for educational purposes and not intended or implied to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment for either yourself or others, including but not limited to patients that you are treating (if you are a practitioner). He has acquired part of his personality from my mother- he can be loud and will overreact or get really angry about things. This includes being told he needs to stop an activity because we are leaving the house, etc. I am trying to help him manage these outbursts because kids are starting to make fun of him at school for them. Do you have any specific strategies that would help or should I focus more on his diet and sleep? He is normally a sweet boy and these outbursts have improved with age but I feel he needs more support. 2. Is there anything that is the opposite of the ego trap when you have been repeatedly told negative things like that you are worthless and will never amount to anything? If the ego trap is demotivating, is hearing the opposite motivating? If so, can't it also be extremely demotivating as well, especially if your mind is doing a CB analysis of the possibility of success and whether the energy output is worth it, but the people around you are saying that you won't succeed? 3. I have an aunt who is so solipsistic, doesn't enquire about anyone else and is disagreeable. Sitting across the table from her, it's difficult to understand how someone can be so blind to the life of others and narcissistic. She's was divorced by 2 prior husbands. Is disagreeable behavior like this related to the "theory of mind" module and if so can you describe the various demarks on the "theory of mind" bell curve? >>> Enrollment is now open for Parenting by Design, my simple, evidenced-based coaching program for parenting your sensitive child in a way that increases cooperation, discharges power struggles, and rebuilds their trust in your authority–all while supporting your child's mental health and your own. Beyond the Sessions is answering YOUR parenting questions! In this episode, Dr. Rebecca Hershberg, Dr. Emily Upshur, and I talk about... 3:50 - At 3-years-old you need to physically be a container for your child, so you might need to be more intentional about what environments are conducive for that during this stage. 7:28 - Try to incorporate moments where you notice the good and use positive reinforcement to supplement the discipline you need to do. 9:38 - When we discipline a child, they may feel ashamed, guilty, or embarrassed, which can cause them to become more dysregulated (but that doesn't necessarily mean we are doing something wrong). 13:48 - "A kid needs a target if we want them to hit that target." 17:20 - It's okay to give your child an out to allow them to save face when they are doing something "wrong." ✨We want to hear from you! In the time it took to read the title of this episode, another NBA player just scored at least 60 points. Rather than celebrating these impressive achievements, many fans are waxing poetic about the good ol' days, back when defense MEANT something, you know? And that's pretty dumb. It's still very hard to score many baskets in a game.Plus, that Peyton Manning and Emmitt Smith Bud Light commercial, coach firings and bats flying on the court, and Sean learns about a new NBA player with a cool nickname and an even cooler Wikipedia photo. This week on Political Breakfast, strategists Tharon Johnson and Brian Robinson look at the latest New York Times poll showing despite his several felony indictments, Donald Trump is leading in 5 critical battleground states, including Georgia. According to the poll, voters said they trusted Trump over President Joe Biden on the economy, foreign policy and immigration. Plus, Trump's outbursts while testifying on the stand during his civil fraud trial in New York. And Georgia lawmakers sat on a surplus of roughly 16 billion dollars in unspent funds at the end of the last fiscal year. That's likely to spark debate during the 2024 legislative session beginning in January.
