In this week's Black World News, Kehinde Andrews makes plain the mirage of the Paris '24 Olympics (26 July 2024 – 11 August 2024) following his family road trip to Lille in France to watch live the (Black) Women of Team USA dominate the Japanese in basketball. He makes plain the assimilationist policy and color-blind approach of France to race; he debunks the myth of "Black" and "White" "genetic superiority" to explain their respective dominance in certain sporting and athletic activities eg Black people in track and White people in swimming. Finally, he makes plain the insidious nature of the patriotism and Diaspora wars in international sporting competitions. - In this week's official guest interview, Kehinde Andrews talks with Dr Robyn C. Spencer-Antoine about her book The Revolution Has Come: Black Power, Gender, and the Black Panther Party in Oakland and the history of women (who made up over 50% of the party), gender, and power in the party. They also discuss her second book project, To Build the World Anew: Black Liberation Politics and the Movement Against the Vietnam War in the context of Palestine, settler colonialism, and the ongoing investment and buy-in of these land grab and dispossession projects. Finally, they touch on Patricia Murphey Robinson, a Black organizer, and psychotherapist who worked with people in many movements, and Dr. Robyn's work curating the @PATarchives on Instagram to spotlight how Patricia Murphy Robinson's unprocessed home archives reframe the Black radical tradition. - Dr Robyn C. Spencer-Antoine is a History and African American Studies professor at Wayne State University (WSU), Detroit, Michigan, where they're developing the Detroit Center for Black Studies. She's a historian of the Black freedom movements, an activist, a Black feminist, a daughter of the Diaspora, and a mother.  She is co-founder of the Intersectional Black Panther Party History Project and has written widely on gender and Black power. Sean Combs - Diddy on the run

There is an uproar in the entertainment world as prominent former Vibe Magazine editor Danyel Smith stands forward to accuse one of rap's most influential figures, Sean “Diddy” Combs of issuing a death threat towards her. This comes among mounting legal troubles for the 51-year-old rapper and producer, further intensifying the already existing turmoil.Combs, revered as an industry giant, has a well-established reputation within the music industry, but Smith's shocking accusations promise to cast a daunting shadow over his achievements. The accusation contributes to a new wave of concerns for the rapper who is already battling ongoing legal disputes.Smith, who served as the editor-in-chief of the prominent entertainment publication Vibe magazine, has a strong presence in the music industry. As a central figure in music journalism during the '90s, she stood as a conduit for tangible connection between prominent music figures and readers around the world. It's Smith's high-ranking position that brings an added layer of concern to Combs' current issues. While Combs is no stranger to negative publicity, these are serious allegations which could have major consequences. Threats of violence, particularly death threats, are gravely serious assertions. Importantly, such claims can often be difficult to verify unless there is tangible evidence, such as recordings or eyewitness testimonies, strengthening the accusations. Hence, it's crucial not to jump to conclusions until all facts are clearly presented.Legal scrutiny has not been a stranger to Combs. From alleged assault accusations and misdemeanors in the past, each legal scrape further challenges Combs' public image, while simultaneously, potentially altering his standing within the industry. The continuous controversies aren't aiding the mogul, in fact, they might be shadowing his contributions to the industry.Despite the swirly controversies, Combs' impact on the music industry is undoubtable. Selling millions of records globally, shaping careers of countless artists, founding Bad Boy Entertainment, and producing multiple chart-topping hits, Combs is certainly a formidable force within music circles. While his influence is irrefutable, these mounting allegations do not paint a flattering picture for the entertainment mogul.Looking forward, questions linger as to how much of an effect this allegation will have on Combs' career. Would there be an investigation into these claims? How will the industry and his peers respond to Smith's accusations? As the storm of scrutiny envelops Combs, only time can tell how this will play out.The incident serves as a reminder of the power dynamics within the entertainment industry, and how they can sometimes overshadow outstanding achievements. While this might not be the death knell for Combs, it certainly stresses the rapper's need to address his actions responsibly. As the story unfolds, one can only hope that the truth will surface, and justice, if necessary, will be served.

“The Misogynistic She-Devil The She-Devil sees herself as superior to other women, and at least on a level with, if not above, the top alpha males she encounters. In her view, other women are manipulative, dishonest, irrational, incompetent or unintelligent, but somehow she is exempted. She might possess some stereotypical feminine virtues like beauty and slenderness. But she perceives herself as instantiating the stereotypical masculine virtues of intelligence, the strength of character and rationality, and her behavior is more manly than that of her male coworkers, classmates or friends. Don't be surprised if she can outdrink all of them. She is in constant competition with other women and would rather kick a woman off the career ladder or out of school than help her progress. But she masterfully escapes detection and punishment for her bad behavior. As you wait for the elevator with your box of memorabilia and your withering office plant, your rival is one step further up the career ladder, her triumphant laughter hanging in the air. She is host to dark personality traits. Her firm belief that she is superior to other women points most strongly to narcissism. But narcissistic traits are also routinely present in borderline personalities and psychopaths. In the general population, dark traits tend to be subclinical, which means that they are not associated with the level of dysfunction seen in clinical cases. But mixing high functionality with sinister character traits is more likely to give you a Molotov cocktail than a Cosmopolitan.” These other incidents occurred in my childhood: “A drug house (also known as a drug den, crack house, shooting gallery, or trap house)[1] is a residence used in the illegal drug trade. Drug houses shelter drug users and provide a place for drug dealers to supply them. Drug houses can also be used as laboratories to synthesize (cook) drugs, or cache ingredients and product. Drug houses have been a subject widely presented in hip hop and trap music, with the latter genre being named after an American slang term for a drug houses.[2][3] The strongest industry in some urban areas is the illegal drug trade. Abandoned buildings ravaged by arson or neglect are utilized by drug dealers since they are free, obscure, secluded and there is no paper trail in the form of rent receipts. The sale of illegal drugs often draws violent crime to afflicted neighborhoods, sometimes exacerbating the exodus of residents. In some cases, enraged citizens have burned crack houses to the ground, in hopes that by destroying the sites for drug operations they would also drive the illegal industries from their neighborhoods.[4] Many major American urban areas contain crack houses.[5][6][7].” “Sin City is a nickname that may be applied to an urban area (a city or part of) that caters to various vices. These vices may be legal (depending on area) or illegal activities which are tolerated. Examples of vices include sex-related services (prostitution, strip clubs, sex shops, etc.), gambling (casinos, betting shops, etc.), or drug use (alcohol, marijuana, etc. consumption), and even excessive organized crime and gang activity. If the city is known for prostitution, it is often called a red-light district, as in Amsterdam, Netherlands.”There was bloodshed, folks lying in pools of blood. I went to 1997 Vibe Magazine party type of parties in the organized crime world where people were gunned down as bad element are leaving out. The organized crime parties sometimes ended prematurely because of reality TV show type of drama occurring at the parties. The women criminals would grab me, shove me in the luxury cars, and drive me out of there swiftly. We were the first to leave and the first to leave quickly usually whenever the drama broke out. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/support

Were back with Dem Vinyl Boyz this week and were diving into the debut album of Atlanta's most iconic rap group, OutKast. Their debut album "Southernplayalisticadillacmizik" released April 26, 1994, was largely influential in the Atlanta rap scene and helped distinguish Southern hip hop as a credible hip hop scene during East Coast and West Coast hip hop's market dominance at the time. "Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik" incorporates analog elements such as Southern-styled guitar licks, languid soul melodies, mellow 1970s funk grooves, digital hip hop production elements such as programmed snare beats, booty bass elements, including Roland TR-808 clave rhythms, and old school hip hop elements, including E-mu SP-1200-styled drums and turntable scratches. Wanting to make a statement about urban life as an African American in South Atlanta, OutKast wrote and recorded the album as teenagers and addressed coming of age themes with the album's songs.  "Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik" charted at number 20 on the Billboard 200 and was eventually certified Platinum in the United States, denoting one million copies sold. After the album was certified platinum, LaFace Records gave Outkast more creative control and advanced money for their 1996 follow-up album ATLiens, which some consider to be an all time classic. Vibe Magazine included the album on a 2004 list of "51 Essential Albums "that represent" a generation, a sound, and in many cases, a movement", writing that OutKast, determined the South had something to say, and after emerging from the Dungeon production lab, they said it all, sometimes sang it all—pointedly, funkdafied, and putting on absolutely no East Coast pretense. Classic." Thanks for tuning in to Dem Vinyl Boyz, like and subscribe!! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

"Remember, 1992 was the year that Naughty by Nature had a huge song called O.P.P. It was a megahit. Jonathan [Editor-in-Chief] asked me if I wanted to write an article about Treach from Naughty by Nature. I was like, heck yeah. He didn't tell me that Albert Watson was shooting the cover, the famous photographer Albert Watson, and he didn't tell me that my story was gonna be the very first cover story for Vibe Magazine."  Kevin Powell Finger on the pulse is often used to describe someone who has the ability to read the ongoings of culture, synthesize the information, and in the case of my guest Kevin Powell, write, speak, produce, and publish work that chronicles our collective experience. Many people remember him from the early nineties in the MTV series, The Real World, where he was an original cast member. I became aware of Kevin when he joined Quincy Jones as a senior writer and part of the editorial team at the startup and groundbreaking Vibe Magazine. Since then, Kevin is the author of fifteen books including his new collection of poetry, Grocery Shopping with My Mother. In the works is a biography of Tupac Shakur, utilizing Kevin's treasure trove of interviews and conversations, several gathered while a senior writer at Vibe, and his first documentary film, titled "When We Free The World," about healthy manhood vs. toxic manhood, about fathers and sons.  Following in the footsteps of Toni Morrison and Nikki Giovanni, Kevin is a writer in residence at Prairie View A&M University in Texas for the 2022 - 2023 school year. As a highly involved human and civil rights activist, he is a leader in the movement to redefine manhood away from sexism and violence; has a deep responsibility to mentorship and development of people of every age as agents of change; and is committed to voter education and empowerment. Kevin is a longtime proud resident of Brooklyn, New York and it was great catching up with him. According to the spitting-image of Fif, the $6700 a month he received wasn't quite enough to maintain the lifestyle he felt he deserved based on being related to the Queens rapper, especially while living in NYC. “$6700 a month in the state of New York City, you do the math,” Marquise, 25, told entrepreneur and ex-rapper Choke No Joke. “You're talking about a Forbes lister, you're talking about someone that has problems with everybody, you can't just live in any neighborhood, $81,000 is not a substantial amount of money. You can't just live anywhere. You talking about you got beef with everybody in the industry, you can't just live anywhere.” So join us as we have this conversation and remember to like, share, and comment on this trending topic! "You're Burning the Candle on Both Ends Bubba with Miabelle" is a phenomenal episode if we do say so ourselves. This month's episode of The Unfolding: Presented by TheLovelandFoundation Podcast, is one of our best yet.  Host, Miriam Starobin, interviews Miabelle from hot97. Miabelle is an incredible human being—a New York City based personality, producer, and writer with a love for music, art, and culture. Her experience has ranged from providing content to community newspapers, and major digital + print publications such as Complex Media, Vibe Magazine, and most importantly HOT 97/WBLS, and more! Miabelle started off as a HOT 97 Intern and worked her way up to the Street Team, Digital Department, and eventually On-Air. Not only does Miabelle have a deep love for the sounds that built Hip Hop and R&B music, her Haitian descent plays a huge role in how she connects with people all over the Tristate area. The Unfolding: Presented by The Loveland Foundation podcast is here to embrace the tough conversations and offer a new healing modality through vulnerability, honesty, and reciprocity. Welcome to Grit Nation, I'm Joe Cadwell the host of the show and today I have the pleasure of speaking with author Kim Kelly about her new book titled Fight Like Hell – The Untold History of American Labor.  Kim's book is a remarkable interweaving of past and present that brings America's rich and bloody labor history to vivid life. Her book comes at a time of economic reckoning in America. From Amazon Warehouses to Starbucks coffee shops, interest in organized labor is at a peak not seen in more than half a century. We'll open our conversation by learning why Kim transitioned from writing about heavy metal and country music for Vibe Magazine to covering worker rights issues. Next, we'll discuss the significant role women have played in the labor movement as we dig into the stories of historical figures such as Lucy Parsons and Mother Jones. Later, we'll look into the recent win for workers at an Amazon Warehouse in New York and what it means for the organized labor in the years to come. And we'll wrap up our conversation by understanding the connection between the struggle for rights for people with disability and the labor movement. The Show NotesKim Kellyhttps://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Fight-Like-Hell/Kim-Kelly/9781982171056Grit Nation  Webpagehttps://www.gritnationpodcast.comWin Grit Nation Merchhttps://mailchi.mp/c28da31260b8/grit-nation-podcast-sign-up-pageEmail comments or suggestions to:joe@gritnationpodcast.comGrit Nation is a proud member of the Labor Radio / Podcast Networkhttps://www.laborradionetwork.org/  NW Carpenters Union United Brotherhood of Carpenters, Regional Council in the Pacific NW 6 states + 29k members strong!!Image Pointe Printing Union Printers based in Waterloo IowaThe Martinez Tool Company Martinez Tools, built tough and built to last a lifetime.Diamondback Toolbelts Manufactures of premium quality toolbelts and accessoriesUnion Home Plus Union Home Plus helps union members save money when they buy, sell, or finance their home.
