Tonight‘s group consisted mostly of a monologue (out of necessity) about how it is that we are to read the Fathers. We have learned over these few years that one must read in a discerning and discriminating fashion, as well as prayerfully. There is great wisdom to be found within the ascetical writings, however, we must understand that the spiritual life and the personal struggle of each of the desert monks was unique. Furthermore, the desert itself was a laboratory like no other. In the deep solitude, the fathers saw with great clarity the workings of the human mind and heart as well as temptations that came from within and through demonic provocation. If there is one point that I wanted to make clear in pressing through this with the group is that our love of virtue, of God and our desire to be free of the passions can lead us not only into extremes of discipline but also into a kind of psychological violence. The sorrow over our own poverty and sin can lead us to repress certain parts of our personality and aspects of our life as human beings that are a source vitality and the capacity to love. We have often spoken about desire being at the heart of the spiritual life; we seek He alone who can fill what is lacking within us. Yet when the ascetic life is treated like a defense mechanism, we can project our struggles and responsibility for ourselves onto others or, in the intensity of the struggle, repress that which is essential to being fully human. This is not an ancient phenomenon. Those who engage in the spiritual battle today can be tempted in similar ways. Each generation is unique in regards to the nature of the battle but the same pitfalls remain. It is for this reason that the ascetical life cannot be seen as an end in itself. It must begin with Christ, our relationship with him and our trust in his mercy and grace. Devoid of this relationship, the ascetic life can draw us into self focus that is destructive to us both emotionally and spiritually. Thus, our reading of the fathers places upon us a responsibility to be striving at the same time to draw close to Christ. Otherwise, the spiritual life can become a tragic distortion of the truth rather than the source of healing that it is meant to be. The current state of affairs within the life of the Church and the disconnect with this greater spiritual tradition points to such a distortion. When Christianity becomes a cultural phenomenon and whenever even its deepest and most beautiful forms of prayer become habitual and automatic, it becomes lifeless. Let us take heed then of this great responsibility and entrust ourselves to the grace of God and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. All things are possible with God, but without him there is only darkness or a sad simulation of faith. --- Text of chat during the group: 00:13:17 Bob Čihák, AZ: P 230, K 00:23:29 Rachel: Is the connection instable for anyone else? 00:23:42 Rachel: unstable* 00:24:21 Monk Maximos: Replying to "unstable*" Mine is fine 00:24:44 Nypaver Clan: Reacted to "Mine is fine" with

First, there's the voice. Devoid of affectation or theatrics, it's a delightful instrument, one wielded with true subtlety. Technically a dramatic mezzo, it moves with graceful ease from slightly husky sensuality to bluesy boisterousness conveying, at turns, sweet romanticism and gently aching melancholy. Its purity of tone matched by impeccable phrasing, this is a voice to be reckoned with. Then there are the songs. On Arms Full of Roses, her debut album, Hayle covered pop classics “Look of Love” and “Can't Take My Eyes off You”, but it was her own compositions, evocative of Gershwin and Cole Porter, that truly captured the imagination. Her virtually unclassifiable style, and extraordinary gift for both music and lyrics, is again evident on So Much For Good Behaviour. Featuring original songs sure to be mistaken as classics, (“But You Do”, “Summer's Kiss” and “Impossible You” among them); a who's who of Canadian musicians (including the legendary Guido Basso, with a haunting chromatic harmonica solo on Summers Kiss); and the contributions of Juno Award-winning recording engineer John Bailey, and Emmy Award-winning producer Don Breithaupt, So Much For Good Behaviour is a confluence of artistry and ingenuity. “These songs wrote themselves. In fact, I didn't quite know where they were going until they took me there,” says Hayle, of her quirky, complex and layered compositions. Consider the poetry and homage to a by-gone era, and you'll understand why this is something special: Drunk on second chances / This serenade / A cavalcade / Of flowery would be trues... and It's helplessly, haplessly / Hopelessly, maddeningly / Wonderful Wanting You... and Did I misread your glance as something more than fleeting / Did I mistake the kiss that lingers on my lips / I only ask as winter passes / You will remember / And save me your Summer's Kiss And Then. Montreal-born and Toronto-based, this jazz chanteuse has had a fascinatingly chameleonic career, and draws from a deep well of experience in creating her work. Hayle's musical, vocal and lyrical maturity, so evident on the albums, is eloquent testimony to a lifelong commitment to the crafts of singing and song writing. Robyn Hayle, began vocal and piano lessons at the Royal Conservatory in Montreal at age seven, and won her first International Music Competition at nine, singing “Faust.” By thirteen, she was performing in city clubs, singing backup for popular Quebec entertainer Tony Roman. At 15, Hayle became the youngest music student ever at McGill, but soon defected to rock 'n roll. She toured with such stars as Johnny Farrago and Patsy Gallant and headed her own bands, prior to relocating to Toronto, where she was soon in demand for jingles and voiceover work — in both official languages. In Toronto, Robyn also worked on children's programming for TVO, including Sesame Street, and the internationally acclaimed Today's Special, in which she played the computer “TXL Series Four”, and did animated voices that earned her a global cult following. A stint in New York City studying at the Neighborhood Playhouse was followed by a move to Los Angeles. RH Returning to her first love — and passion — Robyn Hayle is currently promoting the recently released So Much For Good Behaviour. #robynhayle #standupcomedian #todaysspecial #chrispomay #livewithcdp #barrycullenchevrolet For more information, contact info@robynhayle.com.https://robynhayle.comhomehttps://beacons.ai/chrisdpomayhttps://www.cameo.com/chrispomaypaypal.me/chrispomayWant to create live streams like this? Get Naked City Here: https://a.co/d/cPlmelb In this long-awaited book, three bohemians—a painter, a street dancer, and an aspiring musician—struggle to answer the question: “Is it possible for an artist to survive in the 21st Century?” Devoid of family, a young singer hitchhikes to Manhattan, befriends a street dancer she meets while busking and, desperate for rent, poses for a painter who has shifted from landscapes to nudes. The relationships lead all three of them to ponder the purpose of art and the meaning of success. Naked City takes us inside the head of artist, and native New Yorker, Eric Drooker, whose award-winning graphic novels—beginning with Flood!—have charted new terrain for the form. A meditation on art and life, it reveals two truths: “inspiration appears when you least expect it” and “art is a non-stop hustle.” Check out our new bi-weekly series, "The Crisis Papers" here: https://www.patreon.com/bitterlakepresents/shop Thank you guys again for taking the time to check this out. Doubts abound over the future of the Grand Old Party (GOP). The potential defeat of Donald Trump in the next month's election might not just be a significant setback for the current president, but also a destabilizing event for the Republican Party. Media outlet Axios paints a vivid picture of an ensuing identity crisis, a brutal power struggle, and possible years in the wilderness for the party. Donald Trump, the current president of the United States, and the chief GOP flagbearer has undoubtedly stamped his brand on the party. With a high-stakes communication style and a decision-making pattern that often sidesteps established norms, Trump has divided not just the nation, but his party as well. The polarization within the Republican ranks extends from local party organizations to GOP grandees, leaving many wondering about the direction the party would take in a post-Trump era. On the one hand, Trump continues to command significant support among registered Republican voters, often rallying thousands to his cause. On the other hand, his style and policies have deeply alienated a significant chunk of GOP members who subscribe to traditional conservative values.Should Trump be defeated, the post-election landscape for the Republican party appears to be fraught with uncertainty. This potential "identity crisis," as Axios suggests, may plunge the GOP into disarray. Without a unifying figure to rally behind, the party may witness a brutal power struggle, fueled by ideological differences and competing visions for the party's future.Meanwhile, Jack Smith, a veteran political analyst, concurs with this analysis. "Donald Trump is a unique political figure," Smith observes. "Never before in modern political history have we seen a president with such a divisive impact on his party. The Republicans will have to face a reckoning, regardless of whether Trump wins or loses the election."Smith also posits that the party might have to spend years in the "wilderness," figuratively speaking, to rediscover its core values and reconnect with the increasingly diverse America. During which, the GOP could lose ground to its Democratic counterparts in terms of policy implementation and generation of popular support. On the prospect of a power struggle, Smith added, "Devoid of a figure like Trump, who has been both a maverick and a lightning rod, the party will have to contend with both the far-right elements in its ranks and the traditional conservatives who have been sidelined in the Trump era."In conclusion, a potential Trump defeat could set the stage for an intense period of soul-searching and strife within the GOP. As America waits with bated breath for the election results, observers predict that much more is at stake than just the presidency; the future of the Republican party hangs in the balance too.
Pastor Taylor - Exodus 20:17; Deuteronomy 5:21; Luke 12:13-15; Philippians 4:10-13; Colossians 3:5; Hebrews 13:5-6 This morning our conversation is going to center around watching out for the 'Green-Eyed Monster' that often knocks on the doors of our lives, deep in our heart of hearts. And if we given it space and freedom in our lives -- it won't simply make it impossible for us to adhere to the other nine Ten Commandments -- rather it has the capability to deform us so that we live less than how we were created to be. Devoid of joy. And far removed from the abundant life Jesus wants for us As we conclude our series looking at the 'Big Ten,' we're gonna take a look at this 'Green-Eyed Monster' inside each of us. An ancient 'monster' that has tempted humanity since practically day one and is still wielded by the Enemy to drive each of us away from our Creator God and further apart from our neighbor. We are going to look at the 'Green-Eyed Monster' of coveting.

From Nazi Germany to modern-day moral shifts, we explore how easily human behavior can be manipulated. This episode challenges listeners to critically examine their own beliefs and question the origins of their values. If our thoughts and actions are so heavily influenced by external factors, can we truly claim to have free will? The Universe is incredibly big and seems full of potential for life, with billions of habitable planets. If an advanced civilization had the technology to travel between the stars, at just 0.1% of the speed of light, It could colonize our galaxy in roughly 100 million years. Which is not that long given the billions of years the Milky Way has existed – so in principle any spacefaring civilization should be able to spread rapidly over huge sectors of the galaxy. And yet we see nothing, hear nothing, the universe seems empty. Devoid of others. This is the Fermi Paradox, which we have discussed in more detail in other videos. Confronted with the seemingly empty universe, humanity faces a dilemma. We desperately want to know if we are alone in the Milky Way. We want to call out and reveal ourselves to anyone watching but that could be the last thing we ever do. Because maybe the universe is not empty. Maybe it's full of civilizations but they are hiding from each other. Maybe the civilizations that attracted attention in the past were wiped away by invisible arrows. This is the Dark Forest solution to the Fermi paradox. Sources & further reading: https://sites.google.com/view/sources-darkforest/ Give the show a 5 STAR Review ⭐️ We Highly Appreciate It! This week we are taken on a trip through the lens of Proverbs 7 which shows us the way that leads to the chambers of death. King Solomon shows us an example of a man who is lured down the path of iniquity. Not knowing that it would cost him his life. Sin here is represented by the immoral woman who seduces the simple to go with her and enjoy the luxurious, prideful, sinful life on her bed which is adorned with the finest linen on the outside, but in essence, it distorts the one word that best describes God: Love. Saying that love is the embrace of worldly longing and a vapid satisfaction.
New age spirituality is creeping into the fitness industry. From tarot cards at the front desk of barre studios, yoga classes at nearly every gym across the country, and a general openness to trying things like horoscope readings, psychics, and sound bath meditations to improve wellbeing, the industry that is meant to make us well is leading us down a path of darkness. As Christians, we must be discerning about what we open our heart to and allow into our lives. The great news is that the Holy Spirit is your best friend when it comes to determining which classes and gyms to step into and which to avoid. Join me in this episode for a conversation on defining new age spirituality and some thoughts on why it's working its way into spaces where we never thought we'd see it. The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the linchpin of Christian faith, and today Ray, E.Z., Mark, and Oscar explore its impact on the entire belief system of Christianity. It goes beyond theological doctrine, infusing Christianity with purpose, hope, and eternal consequences. Devoid of the resurrection, the narrative unravels, and faith is reduced to mere wishful thinking. This event is not merely a demonstration of divine power; it symbolizes triumph over death and signifies approval of a redemptive work unparalleled in scope. Through the resurrection of Christ, Christianity stands apart from man-made religions, asserting itself as a divine revelation rather than a human invention.Negating the claims of some that the resurrection was purely spiritual, biblical accounts emphasize the tangible nature of Jesus' post-resurrection interactions. He eats, allows touch, and stands among disciples, challenging interpretations which favor a solely spiritual appearance. Jesus raised Himself from the dead, and the guys discuss how this underscores His divine identity. This self-resurrection distinguishes Him from other biblical instances, portraying Him as the architect of this pivotal event, asserting divine authority over death.Witnessing the miraculous, as seen in the resurrection, doesn't guarantee faith. The guys consider how some people saw Jesus after His resurrection, yet they didn't follow Him. This paradox emphasizes the transformative power of the gospel, surpassing intellectual acknowledgment for a profound internal change.Critics draw parallels between Christian narratives and elements in other religions, but shared themes don't diminish the unique truth of the Christian gospel. They echo universal spiritual truths across cultures and histories. The guys point out that critics also claim Jesus' body was stolen; however, Jesus' public post-resurrection appearances challenge this idea. Disciples' willingness to face persecution and death attests to the sincerity of their convictions. While salvation is a spiritual work, historical evidence substantiates Christianity's foundations. The resurrection defies dismissal as a cleverly devised tale, unfolding in real time and leaving an indelible mark on human history. Jesus is an active, victorious heavenly king. This offers hope to believers facing suffering and promises a future resurrection with glorified bodies, cementing the resurrection's enduring impact. Thanks for listening! Some on the Right are claiming that we need to be pacifist in the face of Iranian aggression lest we risk a return to 20 years of neocon, Wilsonian interventionism. We're joined today by Kyle Shideler of the Center for Security Policy, who shows us how these voices on the Right are misjudging the Biden administration. Biden has no intention of starting a war with Iran and is in fact using our soldiers as hostages so when they inevitably get attacked, he can blame Israel. He explains how simply returning to Trump-era alliances would restore deterrent without sucking us into a painful war. Also, I go through some of the early congressional primaries and urge listeners to vote against incumbents. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

On Saturday, Nov. 25, the Washington Post and Rolling Stone Magazine published articles that are designed to make people believe there is nothing to the UFO phenomenon. UFO investigator George Knapp pointed out the timing of the articles' release, which conveniently coincides with expected actions of some corrupted politicians to squash UFO transparency legislation this week. If you don't appreciate it, you may as well not have it. Isn't that a disturbing thought? Of course, appreciation is at the core of kibud av v'eim, a mitzvah that Eisav HaRasha excelled in. Think about it. By the age of fifteen, Eisav had already killed a man, lived with a married woman, denied the Torah and renounced mitzvos, techias hameisim and olam haba. Devoid of morality, it seems puzzling that he was so careful to honor his father Yitzchak. In this week's Shmuz on the Parsha, Rabbi Shafier takes a deeper look as to why kibud av was so instinctual to even a lowlife like Eisav. Ready to gain a golden ticket to happiness and meaning? BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND - FOR 5 NOVEMBER! We look at the story the government published as The King's Book, more than 500 witness statements and other contemporary sources and conclude, like the Victorian antiquarian Jardine who wrote up the trial from the State Papers, there is no reliable corroborating evidence for the gunpowder story we've been told.

So much of the coverage of hip-hop's 50th birthday has been fawning. Congratulatory. Devoid of meaningful critique. All that despite the fact that the art form has been soaked through with misogyny and homophobia from day one. So how do you celebrate hip-hop's accomplishments while asking it to do better? Sam talks to journalist Kiana Fitzgerald, author of Ode to Hip-Hop, on how the women of hip-hop are leading the way today… but at what cost? And he catches up with hip-hop scholar Jason England, assistant professor of English at Carnegie Mellon University, who argues hip-hop's midlife crisis has left an empty shell of what the genre once was. Quentin Tarantino surprised fans with the release of his third film, 'Jackie Brown' coming as it did on the heels of the global phenomenon that was 'Pulp Fiction' in all its unprecedented Tarantino-ness. Devoid of gory violence, 'Jackie Brown' is a thoughtful, hilarious, insightful and moving crime story that manages to be incredibly faithful to the ethos of the Elmore Leonard novel 'Rum Punch' (on which the film is based) while also mining Tarantino's own deeply personal connection to the blaxploitation films that made Pam Grier a genre star in the 70's and to the more working-class parts of Los Angeles, towns featured in the film like Carson and Hawthorne, CA and iconic now-gone locations like the Cockatoo Inn. "I treat movie stars like actors and actors like movie stars" said Tarantino, and that approach is well-represented here, with Michael Keaton and Robert DeNiro turning in perfectly-pitch supporting turns and industry vets like Forster and Grier getting plenty of runway to inhabit roles they weren't usually given during their heyday. This episode covers those locations, the incredible soul and r&b tracks that populate the soundtrack, and the brilliant acting from everyone in the cast, as well as the sure-handed filmmaking from Tarantino's growing collection of go-to crew and production staffers. One of my very favorite films, it's a pleasure to share my 'Jackie Brown' episode with you all!
