Sarah Yenbamroong is the wife of Kris Yenbamroong, and they are the owners of arguably one the best Thai restaurants ever, Night Market. I wanted to share Sarah’s story for multiple reasons, but the main one being that she has helped propel the restaurants into what they are today. Second, because her and Kris’s love story could be made into your next favorite rom com. They met at the iconic Corner Bistro in NY where he literally fought for honor. Fast forward 9 months later, she moved to LA into the house where Kris lived with his parents. She went from being a fashion writer to helping Kris and his family grow their business to what they are today. Night Market now has three locations in LA, they have a wonderful cook book, and have been featured in the LA Times (multiple times), on Food52, Esquire, Thrillist, Eater, Bon Appetite, Vogue and so much more. We talk about losing our fathers, taking big chances, leaving your family to start a new one, Anthony Bourdain, funny stories about the restaurant and so much more. Sarah is a gentle darling angel and this episode is filled with stories of grit, love, grief and success.   https://www.instagram.com/ntmrkt http://www.nightmarketla.com   www.milkandhoney.com with code PIA15 for 15% off your next order!   Produced by Dear Media

Beginning to explore the intersection of food and racial justice, DC discusses what he's learned about USDA discrimination and its disastrous effect on America's black farmers. Then he makes chicken a la Kris Yenbamroong's Thai-style Korean BBQ recipe and gets Andrew Rose Gregory (The Gregory Brothers) on the horn for a remote conversation about focaccia, the rare hippie honey of the Park Slope Co-Op, The Dave Matthews Band Effect, and much more. This week on California Cooking, Jess is sitting down with the chef and owner of NIGHT+MARKET, Kris Yenbamroong. Kris has made quite the name for himself with his L.A. take on Thai food. Kris grew up working in his family's restaurant on Sunset Blvd. before opening NIGHT+MARKET. He talks about the ups and downs of the restaurant biz, the person who single handedly helped put NIGHT+MARKET on the map, and the Oscar-winning actress who he calls his "noodle bae."

Aloha friends and foodies, and welcome back. Today I'm interviewing Lesli Schwartz, the creator of Asian Caucasian, a food blog dedicated to helping the average cook create Asian inspired cuisine in their home kitchens. Lesli began her interest in Asian food in Sweden where she met a fellow expat named Damien, a native of Singapore and a talented gourmet Asian cook. After discovering their shared joy of preparing Asian cuisine, they began to work as a team hosting dinner parties and catering for clients. After a few years, Lesli returned home to Atlanta with her husband, where she started her blog. The blog has been up and running now for at least three and a half years, and within two years Lesli has managed to grow her Instagram to over 6,000 followers. In this episode, we talk about Lesli’s favorite spicy sauce, versatile & delicious recipes you can start cooking tonight, and the simple steps you can take to begin your Asian inspired cooking journey. You can find Lesli on her blog, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Pinterest   Recipes Mentioned in this Episode: Asian Inspired Matzo Ball Soup Asian Rubbed Salmon Miso Glazed Salmon Wasabi Crusted Tuna 10 Essentials for Asian Cooking   Cookbook Mentioned by Nicole (Pad Thai recipe) Night + Market: Delicious Thai Food to Facilitate Drinking and Fun-Having Amongst Friends by Kris Yenbamroong   Come Visit BFF with the Chef: The BFF with the Chef Website Twitter Facebook Instagram

The last time I had seen Kris Yenbamroong, he and his partner Sarah St Lifer were giving me a ride into downtown Chiang Mai from a village on the outskirts. I had thought about interviewing him in Northern Thailand, since we were there, and since his Night+Market restaurants in Los Angeles are nominally Thai places. But the more he talked about his restaurants, and about himself, it was clear, as we put it in this episode, these aren’t Thai Restaurants. These are LA restaurants.   That’s why, for our second of three LA episodes, I’m so psyched for this conversation. California plus Kris, that’s what makes Night+Market. We talked about that combination, about why wines are such a huge part of what he does, about how he ambushed Jonathan Gold at a public event and ended up having him be a huge Night+Market fan.

Ep. 19 - Dapwell and Kool A.D. from the hip hop group Das Racist join Zach on the show this week to talk about dosa, Chinese buffets, and DMT. Plus we ask them about their breakout song "Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell" and about their appearance in Dosa Hunt, a film by Amrit Singh (from Stereogum). And there's even a rant about Primanti Bros. They also brought along their friends SAFE and Lakutis (aka Lex) to join in on the fun. Thanks to last week's podcast guest Kris Yenbamroong for letting us record the show at Night + Market, his West Hollywood Thai restaurant that's just a few blocks away from the Roxy.

Ep. 18 - L.A. Chef Kris Yenbamroong wasn't an obvious choice to be on the podcast, but we're big fans. Not only is he chef at one of the baddest Thai Restaurants in the country (Night + Market), but he's cooked for LCD Soundsytem, used to work for Photographer Richard Kern (where he got to work on a Thurston Moore project), and has been in Disneyland jail. How could we not?
