Aquarium Drunkard - SIDECAR (TRANSMISSIONS) - Podcast

This week on the show, a conversation with pianist, composer, bandleader, and writer, Vijay Iyer. He's been at it since 1995, recording for labels like Savoy, Pi, and ECM, and he's collaborated with a diverse and inspiring roster along the way including Amiri Baraka, Matana Roberts, Das Racist, previous Transmissions guest Wadada Leo Smith, and many more. His records have incorporated electronic music and spoken word, chamber jazz reverence and loose, free falling blues.  Last year, in collaboration with vocalist Arooj Aftab and bassist Shazhad Ismaily, he released Love in Exile on the Verve label. Writing about the album for our 2023 Year in Review, we called it “A spectral meeting of the minds. This haunting and luminous se…locates a nexus between ambient, jazz, and classical, all while feeling entirely conjured in the moment—because it was.”  Now he's back with a new ECM release, Compassion, and in another trio, reuniting with his bandmates on 2021's stirring Uneasy, bassist Linda May Han Oh and drummer Tyshawn Sorey. Produced by Manfred Eicher, it's a stunning listen start to finish, from its meditative and expansive title track to the dug down groove of “Ghostrumental,” a startling showcase for may Han Oh's thoughtful melodicism, to the thoughtfully chosen covers of Roscoe Mitchell's “Nonaah” and Stevie Wonder's “Overjoyed,” everything about Compassion demonstrates the intentional focus of Iyer and his collaborators. He joins host Jason P. Woodbury to speak about it, reflect on the post-pandemic nebulousness in the air, discuss his mentors Greg Tate and Baraka, and much more.  For heads, by heads. Aquarium Drunkard is powered by its patrons. Keep the servers humming and help us continue doing it by pledging your support via our Patreon page. Transmissions is part of the Talkhouse Podcast Network. Himanshu Suri is best known by his rap name Heems. We wanted to have Heems on not just because we are a fan of his former group Das Racist (you may remember their song “Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell”) but because we wanted to talk to him about Punjabi food. About growing up in Queens. About his new passion for gardening. Check out his very cool new album, Lafandar. Also on the show is James Harris, one half of Throwing Fits, a very funny podcast and online community dedicated to all things menswear. We wanted to invite James in not just to talk about chef fashion but also to find out about where he's eating and drinking around his hometown of New York City. We also get into Fanelli vs. Lucien, not being able to get into Gem Wine thanks to TikTok, eating fried prawn heads, Japanese food at home vs. in restaurants, and eating the miso black cod at Nobu as a kid. We also get the Throwing Fits line on Dimes Square. This is a great talk with James, a real one-of-one guest.MORE FROM HEEMS AND THROWING FITS:Dosa Hunt! Video animation by: Big Flowers Intro/Outro beat by: BLOODBLIXING The Plug (0:46). The Interview (2:46). Few things have been more important to me in my life than hip-hop music. Growing up, I lacked identity and a sense of community. So as I continued to listen to more and more hip-hop music in my teens and early 20s, it quickly became a key vessel for me to learn about the world and connect with a culture, and ethos that I resonated with. And yet, as an Indian guy, it was rare that I ever saw someone who looked liked me that was contributing to this artform that I loved so much. It was hard to see how I fit in, if at all. This all changed once I heard the music of Heems, known for his work in Das Racist, Swet Shop Boys, and as a solo artist. Hailing from Queens, NY, Heems has successfully injected his Indian roots into a brand of witty, thoughtful rap... and invariably helped me see that there was space for people like me in hip-hop after all. So I'm pleased to welcome Heems, as well as Chicago-based producer Lapgan to the show, who produced the wonderful instrumental album History from last year, as well as the new collaborative album with Heems, LAFANDAR. In today's episode, we talk about incorporating Indian culture into hip-hop, Heems' new venture Veena, and the making of this incredibly creative new album, LAFANDAR. Heems' experience ingratiating himself in hip-hop culture (4:00). Importance of desi representation (7:37). Heems' legacy (13:52). The inspiration behind Heems' new venture, Veena (20:04). The features on LAFANDAR (28:58). Inspiration behind Lapgan's 2023 instrumental album, History (32:28). The untapped potential of Indian music in hip-hop sampling (36:30). The LAFANDAR listening experience (43:21). The musical direction behind LAFANDAR (52:09). Heems' witty, often hyper-referential, raps on LAFANDAR (56:46). The natural creative relationship Heems and Lapgan (59:21). The political focus in Heems' music (1:00:48). Upcoming projects / merch / tour dates (1:03:26). He and Ian also compare Detroit and San Francisco as music cities — it's Bob Seger vs. Huey Lewis time! Then they do a quick update of the winter Fantasy Albums Draft, as it is a big day for Steven's team with new releases by The Smile and Katy Kirby. (11:25) Then they break down The Smile's Wall Of Eyes, which sounds like a Radiohead album that's 90 percent as good.Next comes Steven's most anticipated part of the episode — it's an Ian Cohen pop quiz where Steven lists off 10 albums and asks Ian if he reviewed them for Pitchfork (25:45). This is taking "Remember Some Guys" to a whole new level. Then the guys address the discourse around Alex G's recent signing to RCA Records and whether he has the potential to become "Boygenius big." (40:38) In the mailbag, a listener asks about the recent commercial featuring a Das Racist oldie and an "explanation" of Hozier's success (48:25).In Recommendation Corner (1:00:31), Ian talks up the latest from the British band Courting and Steven reiterates Ian's recent rave for Glass Beach.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. Cheekface - I Feel So Weird! from the 2022 album Too Much To Ask on New Professor. In times like we've been living through the past handful of years, humor has become more and more tantamount to survival. Cheekface understands that and displays it with aplomb. The Los Angeles-based band made up of Greg Katz, Amanda Tannen, Mark “Echo” Edwards channels Lou Reed, Jonathan Richman, and Stephan Malkmus with their speak-singing but has plenty of wisdom behind their absurdist, critical, and, dare I say, cheeky lyricism. Our Song of the Day “I Feel So Weird!,” off the band's recently released third record Too Much To Ask, is an excellent example of Cheekface's ability to make you spit-take with laughter at the same time as saying to yourself, “I feel that.” Over a mellow, bass-heavy rhythm Katz spews goofy statements like, “The difference between me and a dog is I am taller /Think about it, just think about it” before getting into a pretty great allegory for the feelings that anxiety often riddles upon a body, which is also an allusion towards dogs. Plus the Das Racist reference of “I'm at the combination Jamba Juice and therapist” makes it the gold standard of satirical lyricism. While Cheekface isn't big on music videos currently, watch the lyric video for other Too Much To Ask highlight “Featured Singer” and read the full post at KEXP.org.Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Hailing from Flushing, Queens, formerly of Heems of Das Racist's Greedhead label, you may have heard him on his solo work through well-received projects such as, Big F****** Baby, No1 2 Look Up 2, or We Live in a Society... or on a track with the Das Racist crew. He is thoughtful, charismatic, and funny as hell, and is also currently a practicing medical writer. Hear a sneak peak at the outspoken nature of Big Baby Gandhi, as I began recording prior to us even legitimately beginning the interview like normal (0:49). An introduction to Big Baby Gandhi (7:08). Gandhi speaks on his upbringing and exposure to hip-hop as a Bangladeshi immigrant, growing up in New York (8:42). Gandhi breaks down the fantasy that lies in rapper finances (17:37). Gandhi dives deep into the increasingly standardized methods in which much of music is created these days (26:24). Gandhi discusses changes in how people consume music (29:52). Gandhi details his belief that music and culture generally is stuck in a loop, leading to nonsensical “culture wars” that distract the common man (particularly minorities) from the real issues (33:58). Gandhi discusses his views on brown representation in hip-hop, and generally finding a way to being authentic as brown person in American society (50:35). Gandhi describes how he came up with the moniker of “Big Baby Gandhi” as a rapper name (1:03:40). Gandhi describes how it felt to release his first project, Big Fucking Baby, to critical acclaim (1:06:21). Gandhi describes his relationship with Heems and Das Racist (1:11:08). Can't Knock the Shuffle

Houston rapper Fat Tony popped onto my radar in the early part of the last decade from his appearances on mixtapes by both ASAP Rocky and Das Racist, and since then he’s had a wildly prolific career, dropping albums at a steady clip and constantly tweaking his sound. His most recent album – 2020's Exotica – finds Tony embracing the role of the griot with a concise collection of storytelling songs. I first connected with him when he appeared on an episode of my hip hop game show The Questions last year, and we had such a good time that I knew we had to reconnect and get even more in-depth on some music talk. In this episode we break down these songs: "Through the Storm" ('10,000 Hours', 2018) "What Wake You Up" feat Bun B ('Exotica', 2020) "Get Out My Way" feat Sophia Pfister ('Wake Up' w/ Taydex, 2020) 'Legal Weed' ('MacGregor Park,' 2017) "Take A Sip" (Charge it to the Game 'House with a Pool', 2018) "U Ain't Fat" ('RABDARGAB', 2010) "Full Circle" feat. We explore this with special guest Anthony Rivello as we take a deep dive in NY Governor Cuomo's recent accusations and contrast that with Woody Allen's abuses resurging into the public sphere. It's a pretty heavy episode, but we manage to insert some levity as only we can. All this plus our song of the week: "You Oughta Know" by Das Racist.
