Mason Paine - 0:01: Summer travel season is right around the corner and Google's chief technology and trends expert Craig Ewer joins me to share travel hacks and explain how AI tools can help make planning your trip a whole lot easier. Thanks for joining me Craig. Craig Ewer - 0:15: Glad to be here. Thank you. Mason Paine - 0:16: Tell me, what have been some of the trends when it comes to travel so far? Craig Ewer - 0:21: Well, a lot of people are looking for help with their travel plans on Google and in fact we've seen a number of all time high searches this year. One of those is kids passports. So it looks like people are really interested in traveling abroad with their families, also couples trips. So romantic getaways seem to be top of mind. We've also seen that cheap summer vacations are trending right now. So I do think people are interested in traveling on a budget. Mason Paine - 0:45: Has road trips been something that's pinging high? Craig Ewer - 0:48: You know, we always see lots of interest in road trip and in fact there are several national parks that are seeing a lot of searches. Yellowstone, Yosemite and Glacier national park are all top trending national parks this year. Mason Paine - 1:01: Now when it comes to any type of traveling, you have to plan something. Is there any particular way that Google helps you plan for these trips? Craig Ewer - 1:09: Yes. You know, you can actually go right to Google, search and type in something like create an itinerary for Costa Rica that's four days long and has a focus on nature. And you're going to get right in the search results an AI generated sample itinerary that'll lay out day by day suggestions for where to eat, places to see, tours you can take. And we show all of that on a map. So it's really easy to click around and see photos, reviews, that type of thing. And then from there it's really up to you how you want to make the trip your own. Mason Paine - 1:37: Is it something that you've tried recently? I'm just curious if you have experience with it. Craig Ewer - 1:42: Definitely. You know, I'm actually looking to go to Mexico around Labor Day and Oaxaca in particular. I said I'm going to Oaxaca for about four or five nights. I'm really interested in food and the local culture and immediately I got a bunch of great suggestions. And then from there, you know, you click out these websites, these travel blogs, you can get really great expert advice that way. Another tool that's worth mentioning is Gemini, which is Google's personal AI assistant and that's more of a chat experience and you can get really specific there with your questions as well. So one thing I love to do is get advice on my packing list, you can say, I'm going to these different locations over the course of a week, let's say. And then say, hey, you know, tell me what should I pack to account for all the different weather I might encounter? And we'll give you all of that advice right in one easy place. So it makes it really simple to get inspiration and help with your planning. Mason Paine - 2:31: I'm so happy you talked about Gemini. What's the difference between Gemini and Google Assistant? Craig Ewer - 2:36: Gemini is really AI powered. Right. It's the future of what we're doing in terms of giving you assistance with AI. So Gemini does have the ability to interact with voi...

This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit chadcrouch.substack.comHello. Just wanted to let you know about my new 8 minute piece in 10 movements, Woods. A few weeks ago I released a similar instrumental work entitled Coots, mentioning it was the first in a series released under the pseudonym “Crou”. It immediately felt like a mistake. Not the music. (For someone who has never felt particularly self-confident as a musician, that was not the problem. I felt good about the music.) The problem was there was another artist going by Crou already, and though I professed the ambiguity of pronunciation appealed to me, I soon reasoned how it would not appeal to the likes of Siri, Alexa and Google Assistant in voice commands. Abort, abort, I thought on release day. So goodby Crou, we hardly knew ya. Hello Sleeping Animal. I like the new name. It's been switched for the Coots release for over a week now, and it's felt steady as she goes. It is one of ten releases I've served up to my distributor with release dates fanning out to September, so the name is pretty much set now. There's plenty more Sleeping Animal to come! Why Sleeping Animal? To me, the name has a warm, tender, and vulnerable connotation. It also doesn't hurt that, as an artist who has to devoted himself to environmental and wildlife recording for the past five years, the name functionally alludes to not containing wildlife sounds. That appeals to me.Starting from square one is always a hand-wringing affair, so if you enjoy it, do me a favor and tell one person about it. In an implacable algorithmic world, word-of-mouth is real.Woods follows in the footsteps of Coots. Not having an environmental sound bed opens up space for a sonic nuance that I've been enjoying experimenting with. And spoiler alert: The die is cast on monochrome cover art. I have another fun project to announce shortly that this aesthetic plays a big role in. Anyway, I'd be delighted if you gave Woods a listen. The sophomore release Woods by Sleeping Animal is available on all music streaming sites (Spotify, Apple, Amazon, Tidal, Qobuz etc.) today, Friday, March 28th.

Forecast: Cloudy with a chance of SSRF attacks. OpenAI's skies clear, but third-party wrappers bring storms. This week's episode kicks off with a poll asking listeners which virtual assistant they use—Alexa, Siri, Google Assistant, or none at all due to privacy concerns. The results give us a snapshot of how people feel about these ubiquitous technologies and their trust levels in them. We then tackle the headlines surrounding OpenAI and the alleged "attack" on its systems. While media outlets are buzzing with claims of vulnerabilities in ChatGPT, the reality is less dramatic. A third-party wrapper using OpenAI's API introduced an SSRF vulnerability that's being actively exploited. This issue highlights the risks of insecure third-party implementations rather than flaws in OpenAI's core infrastructure. It's a reminder that integrations can be a weak link in the cybersecurity chain, and we explore how this misunderstanding has fueled sensationalized reporting. Next up is a discussion on cybersecurity labeling for consumer IoT devices that have reached their End-of-Life (EOL) or End-of-Service (EOS). The idea is to inform users when their devices will no longer receive updates, but the execution is fraught with challenges. From complex software stacks to secondary markets breaking communication chains between vendors and consumers, we unpack why this labeling initiative is easier said than done. With home networks increasingly tied to employer networks, outdated IoT devices could become major security risks, especially in remote work setups. Privacy concerns take center stage as we examine Amazon's controversial decision to eliminate the "Do Not Send Voice Recordings" feature on Echo devices starting March 28, 2025. This change means all voice data will be processed in Amazon's cloud as part of its Alexa+ upgrade, which promises advanced generative AI capabilities. Critics argue this move erodes user privacy by removing local processing options entirely, raising questions about data retention and misuse. For privacy-conscious users, this might signal the end of their relationship with Echo devices. We also cover two critical vulnerabilities making waves in the cybersecurity world. First is CVE-2025-23120, a post-authentication Remote Code Execution flaw in Veeam Backup & Replication software. Exploitable by any domain user due to weak authentication measures and unsafe deserialization practices, this vulnerability underscores why blacklist-based approaches are insufficient for robust security. Then there's CVE-2025-24813, a remote code execution vulnerability affecting Apache Tomcat servers that can be exploited with just one PUT request. This attack leverages session persistence mechanisms and deserialization processes to gain full remote access without authentication—a stark reminder of how seemingly benign requests can lead to catastrophic breaches. Finally, we touch on updates from our benevolent overlords, including insights into ServiceNow vulnerabilities and upcoming events like NoiseFest at RSAC 2025. These resources continue to provide valuable intelligence for staying ahead of emerging threats in the cybersecurity landscape. Storm Watch Homepage >> Learn more about GreyNoise >>

It was an instant sensation. I secretly think the Freemasons were thrilled. However, there was never an agreement with Alanis. Too bad for her. They eventually recorded a vocal with Bailey Tzuke some time late. It was good but inferior to the bootleg. LOVE! As AI disrupts and reshapes our interactions with brands and people alike, how do we genuinely connect with the voices around us? Conversational AI challenges us to rethink engagement with both technology and each other. What does it mean for brands to have a voice, and how can this change redefine connection and accessibility? In this episode of The Trending Communicator, host Dan Nestle sits down with the dynamic duo behind Pragmatic Digital, a strategic marketing agency at the forefront of leveraging cutting-edge technology for tangible business results. Susan and Scot Westwater, authors of Voice Marketing: Harnessing the Power of Conversational AI to Drive Customer Engagement, share their journey from traditional marketing to becoming trailblazers in the world of voice and conversational AI. This episode offers a comprehensive look at the conversational AI ecosystem, from voice assistants like Alexa and Google Assistant to the integration of voice capabilities in mobile apps and customer service platforms. The Westwaters provide invaluable insights on how businesses can harness these technologies to enhance brand experiences, streamline operations, and create more meaningful customer interactions. They educate Dan on some of the finer points of conversational AI and discuss its impact on marketing and communications, offering strategies for implementing voice technology in various business contexts. The conversation highlights the importance of intentional design in creating effective voice experiences, balancing automation with human oversight in AI-driven customer interactions, and the future of agentic AI and its potential applications in business. Whether you're a seasoned marketer, a communications professional, or a business owner looking to stay ahead of the curve, this episode provides actionable advice on integrating conversational AI into your strategy. Susan and Scot's expertise demystifies complex concepts, making them accessible and applicable to businesses of all sizes. Don't miss this opportunity to learn from two of the industry's leading voices on how to leverage conversational AI to drive customer engagement and propel your business forward in the digital age. Listen in and hear about... Embracing conversational AI as a powerful tool for customer engagement How voice technology democratizes information access and distribution Crafting brand personalities for AI-driven interactions with customers Balancing human oversight with AI automation in business processes Leveraging voice assistants and chatbots across multiple communication channels Practical steps for integrating AI into existing marketing and PR strategies The future of agentic AI and its potential impact on business operations Notable Quotes On the Power of Voice in Communication: "Spoken word suddenly became this way of being able to transfer information in a much more democratic method. You didn't have to be able to read. There were opportunities to put things in language. It was starting to get back to the roots again of how information was kind of pulling down some of the gatekeeping." - Susan Westwater [08:04 → 08:35] On the Evolution of Brand Personality: "These were all really interesting, rich experiences that come into play, which is what really geeked me out. Now, Scott was a lot. I would say I was more of the heart and emotion of the possible. I would say Scott was much more of the rational nut to put to." - Susan Westwater [08:35 → 08:51] On the Accessibility of Conversational AI: "It reduces friction. It removes literacy out of the equation. You don't have to know how to use a computer. Literally, as long as you can ask a question, you can get some sort of response." - Scot Westwater [10:08 → 10:21] On the Versatility of Conversational AI: "Chatbots are part of conversational, voice assistants are part of it. Voice Mode and ChatGPT, they're all different flavors of it. You're physically using your voice to ask a question and getting some sort of response from a system." - Scot Westwater [10:34 → 10:49] On the Importance of Intentionality in AI Voice: "We have to be intentional then, by the way, about who it is we want our audiences to speak with. And that can work from a B2B perspective just as much as it can work from an external customer engagement perspective." - Susan Westwater [17:02 → 17:17] On the Practicality of AI in Business: "In practical business you probably don't, you probably don't need AGI, quite frankly. A lot of what we're talking about is automating basic business processes, whether you're using AI or other tools." - Scot Westwater [1:01:22 → 1:01:37] On Getting Started with AI: "Do what you did and just get started now, whether it's learning or experimenting or use case identification, like, just start. There is so much fear out there. There's so much, quite frankly, misinformation related to AI and it's just a matter of getting in there, getting comfortable, getting those quick wins, seeing how it can actually help your process." - Scot Westwater [1:05:28 → 1:05:52] Resources and Links Dan Nestle Inquisitive Communications | Website The Trending Communicator | Website Communications Trends from Trending Communicators | Dan Nestle's Substack Dan Nestle | LinkedIn Dan Nestle | Twitter/X Susan and Scot Westwater Susan Westwater | LinkedIn Scot Westwater | Linkedin Pragmatic Digital | Website Voice Marketing: Harnessing the Power of Conversational AI to Drive Customer Engagement | Amazon Timestamped key moments from this episode (as generated by Fireflies.ai)

Frequently Asked Questions: Privacy, Security, and the State of Tech (Early 2025)1. What is "SparkCat" and why is it significant?SparkCat is malware discovered hiding in both the Apple App Store and Google Play. It uses optical character recognition (OCR) to scan users' photo galleries for cryptocurrency wallet recovery phrases and uploads them to attacker-controlled servers. Over 242,000 Android users downloaded infected apps. It highlights the evolving sophistication of malware and the need for increased vigilance, even with apps from reputable sources.2. What is the UK government asking Apple to do, and what are the potential implications? The UK government has reportedly ordered Apple to create a backdoor allowing access to encrypted cloud backups of users worldwide, through a technical capability notice under the Investigatory Powers Act. Apple is likely to discontinue its encrypted storage service in the UK rather than compromise user security globally. If Apple complies, it could set a dangerous precedent for other governments to demand similar access, undermining encryption and weakening security for everyone.3. What is the story about the man trying to buy a landfill, and what does it illustrate?A man is trying to buy a landfill to search for a hard drive containing his lost Bitcoin fortune. While seemingly absurd, it illustrates the very real consequences of poor digital asset management and data security. It highlights the permanence (and potential inaccessibility) of digital assets and the lengths people will go to recover them, even resorting to extreme measures.4. Why is the US considering banning the DeepSeek AI app?The US is considering banning the Chinese AI app DeepSeek due to concerns that it collects data for a foreign government (China). The app pumps data to China Mobile unencrypted, and there are close ties between the company and the Chinese military. This aligns with the US government's broader concerns about foreign-owned apps, especially those from China, posing national security risks due to data privacy and potential surveillance.5. What is the massive brute-force attack targeting VPNs, and how can organizations protect themselves?A large-scale brute-force attack is targeting VPN devices from companies like Palo Alto Networks, Ivanti, and SonicWall, utilizing nearly 2.8 million IP addresses. Attackers are attempting to guess usernames and passwords to gain unauthorized access. To protect edge devices, organizations should change default admin passwords to strong, unique ones, enforce multi-factor authentication (MFA), use allowlists of trusted IPs, and disable web admin interfaces if they are not needed, and also ensure VPN software is fully up to date.6. Why is Google's removal of its pledge not to build AI for weapons or surveillance significant?Google's removal of its pledge not to build AI for weapons or surveillance is a concerning development. It suggests a shift in the company's ethical stance and a willingness to potentially engage in activities that could have negative consequences for human rights and global security. It raises questions about the future direction of AI development and the role of tech companies in shaping its use.7. What is "enshittification" and how does it relate to current tech trends?"Enshittification" refers to the gradual decline of online services as they prioritize profits over user experience. This process involves platforms initially offering value to users, then shifting focus to business customers, and finally exploiting both for maximum profit. Examples include Twitter restricting API access, Facebook prioritizing sponsored content, smart TVs becoming data-hungry ad machines, and Google Assistant's diminishing functionality. It reflects a broader trend of tech companies sacrificing user experience for financial gain.

Hey everyone, it's Joe Fier from Hustle and Flowchart. Today, I'm thrilled to share insights from my recent chat with Gert Mellak, an expert in online reputation and SEO. Our conversation spanned everything from proactive brand management to the evolving impact of AI on SEO strategies. What's the Episode About? In this episode, Gert and I dive deep into the critical aspects of managing your online reputation and SEO. We discuss how essential it is to control your brand's narrative actively, ensuring consistency across all platforms. Gert shares a unique experiment with a fictional product, highlighting the importance of coherent information online. We also explore the role of AI in maintaining brand presence and the shifting dynamics of platforms like Reddit in affecting web traffic. Proactive Brand Management Gert stresses that, in today's digital world, online information is extensively accessible and can substantially impact perceptions. It's critical to take proactive steps in controlling your brand's narrative. Consistency in information across the web ensures that people get a clear, accurate picture of your brand. Simplicity in Brand Messaging Using the metaphor of educating algorithms like teaching a child, Gert emphasizes the need for simplicity and consistency in brand messaging. Simple, clear language makes it easier for search engines to understand and rank your brand effectively. This straightforwardness helps optimize your SEO efforts. Creating a Personal Brand Website Gert advises creating a personal brand website and interlinking it with your social media profiles to ensure consistency and enhance brand recognition. This central hub can serve as the anchor of your online presence, allowing you to control your information better and present a cohesive brand image. The Power of Consistent Information Gert shares an intriguing experiment where he created a fictional woodworking tool. Through consistent online information across various platforms, he observed significant changes in perceptions. This experiment underscores how critical it is to maintain consistency to shape public views effectively. AI Models Like ChatGPT and Brand Management The discussion touches on the predictive nature of AI language models like ChatGPT, which fill in gaps if information is sparse. Together, we explore how to use AI models to manage your online brand presence by ensuring accurate and consistent content updates. Gert also emphasizes that concise and coherent information helps improve brand representation over time. Managing Online Course Names A business struggled with discoverability because it didn't label its offering as a "course." Gert explains that search engines can't always make connections if keywords or identifiers are missing. Labeling your services clearly helps in better indexing and ranking, which is crucial for attracting the right audience. SEO and Content Structure Aligning your content structure with search engine guidelines is vital for better indexing and ranking. Gert uses the "connect the dots" analogy to describe how search engines work. Ensuring that each piece of content correctly fits together enhances the overall effectiveness of your SEO strategy. AI Evolution and Voice Assistants We discuss the rapid evolution of AI, especially the potential updates in ChatGPT and integration with voice assistants like Alexa and Google Assistant. Gert mentions that even Apple might integrate OpenAI technology into its Siri voice assistant. These advancements hint at a more interactive and pervasive AI presence in our daily lives. The Role of Platforms like Reddit Gert sheds light on the shift in user behavior towards platforms like Reddit, where Google has partnered to impact traffic to traditional websites. This partnership has led to significant declines in website traffic, highlighting the need for businesses to engage on platforms where users are active. Engagement Strategy and Platform Leverage Introducing “Platform Leverage,” Gert suggests engaging users on various platforms like Reddit and YouTube conversationally. Participating in discussions on well-ranking threads enhances brand visibility. This strategy mirrors traditional marketing engagement, akin to attending trade shows to directly reach clients. Using AI Tools and Custom GPTs Training AI models, like custom GPTs, to understand and replicate a brand's voice and style is a game-changer. Gert elaborates on creating bespoke GPTs for specific tasks, improving efficiency, and maintaining consistency. Recording and analyzing spoken inputs to inform AI training further help in capturing the brand's essence. Content Creation and Feedback Utilization We delve into utilizing customer feedback to create relevant content. Gert mentions receiving 400 customer reviews, which helped improve several website elements. This approach ensures that content and strategies remain customer-focused and effective.
