Have you ever wondered how Siri, Alexa, or Google Assistant can understand and respond to our commands? Or how Netflix or YouTube recommend the next video for us to watch? The answer lies in Artificial Intelligence (AI), a branch of computer science that allows machines to perform tasks that usually require human intelligence, such as speech recognition, image processing, and decision-making. In this episode of The Teaching Python podcast, Dr. Nisha Talagala, the founder and CEO of AIClub (https://www.aiclub.world), a nonprofit organization that teaches AI to students and educators, joins hosts Sean Tibor and Kelly Schuster-Paredes to demystify AI and Machine Learning (ML) for middle school students. Dr. Talagala starts by explaining how she started teaching her then 9-year old daughter about AI and quickly realized that there were a lot of gaps in the available AI materials for teaching. She started assembling resources and organizing the content in a way that worked well for kids while providing them with room to grow their knowledge and skills. This quickly turned into a book project, The Fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence, Volume 1 with her co-author Dr. Sindhu Ghanta. Next, the conversation shifts to teaching the ethics of AI and the potential risks and benefits of AI for society. Dr. Talagala explains how students need projects that they can relate to and easily adapt to answer the questions they generate. She suggests that middle school students can play a role in shaping the future of AI by learning about these issues, questioning the status quo, and advocating for responsible AI practices. The episode ends with resources and recommendations for teachers who want to learn more about AI and ML. Special Guest: Nisha Talagala.

Karen Kaushansky is a conversation designer at Google that led the Google Assistant UX design for WearOS and, more recently, for the Pixel Watch. While there has been a lot of attention around conversational UX on smart speakers and mobile phones, wearables introduce new variables and different mental models. Kaushansky goes into detail about designing voice experiences for the watch, what it's like to be an API or embedded in the software, how it's different when you also control the hardware or run software on the device, and more. The interview also discusses how conversation design has changed over the past 25 years. Kaushansky started in the industry in the 1990s and has seen many technology shifts over the years. This also enables us to update our discussion on multimodal interfaces, which was the focus of her appearance on episode 40 of the Voicebot Podcast five years ago. We finish up with a discussion about large language models and the role of conversation designers in applications built on generative AI technologies. She also offers a great tip for designers on navigating this change that is the center of so much discussion today. Kaushansky began her career as a speech technology designer at Nortel, then spent time at Nuance, Microsoft, and Jawbone. At Microsoft, she was part of the team that created Cortana and deployed it on the Windows phone. She joined Google in 2019 and has led user experience design for Google Assistant on a number of products.

This is the first of Voicebot's voice AI 2022 year-in-review episodes, and today we focus on consumer solutions. There was no lack of news this year, and industry insiders Peachy-Jean Retizos, Tom Hewitson, and Eric Schwartz join me to break it all down for our sixth annual year-in-review show. Amazon's layoffs that impacted the Alexa and devices groups dominated industry discussions late in the year. However, it was just a few months earlier that a similar move by Google drove industry news cycles. The two tech giants have set the tone for voice AI in consumer solutions since 2014, so the pullbacks were big news. We lead off with these stories and how they are reshaping the voice AI consumer sector. While the moves are generally viewed negatively in the market, we also talk about the positive elements and how they were not exactly unexpected. There is also a discussion about what is getting additional focus in 2023 and where the new paths of growth are emerging. However, the tech giants are not the only game in town. SoundHound became a public company in 2022 and became the first large-scale voice AI pureplay to tap into public financial markets since Nuance. Synthetic speech engines had a notable year in terms of customer growth and acquisitions. And large language models are taking natural language in an entirely new direction, plus we hit on a few other topics. It's been a pretty amazing year with highlights and lowlights, and it was good to get some front-line experts in to hash it all out. Enjoy!

TAGS: Ransomware, Malware, Phishing, Security Breach Microsoft Confirms Server Misconfiguration Led to 65,000+ Companies' Data Leak Microsoft “misconfigured” an Azure Blob Storage server causing a security breach. Attackers were able to access unauthorized customer data; business transactions and other interactions between Microsoft and its customers. SOCRadar, a cyber security company, is calling the security breach “BlueBleed”. SOCRadar discovered the breach on September 24, 2022 Microsoft is downplaying the security breach but security researcher Kevin Beaumont isn't buying it. Mr. Beaumont suggest Microsoft dropped the ball on informing its customers, and federal regulators, of the security breach in a timely manner. HiddenAds malware affects 1M+ Android users McAfee’s Mobile Research Team identified multiple apps containing malware on the Google Play Store. After install, the malicious android apps automatically run services without the user knowing or interacting with the app. That’s right, they auto run after install. These malicious apps then disguise themselves by changing their icon to the “Google Play” icon and renaming to themselves to “Google Play” or “Settings”. The malicious apps quickly create permanent malicious services. McAfee’s Mobile Research Team demonstrates the resilience of the malware by using kill -9 on the service processes. More malicious processes generate immediately as if nothing happened. Fully undetectable PowerShell backdoor disguised as part of a Windows update Director of security research at SafeBreach, Tomer Bar stated, "The covert self-developed tool and the associated C2 commands seem to be the work of a sophisticated, unknown threat actor who has targeted approximately 100 victims." Based on the metadata found within a malicious document, this seems to be a LinkedIn-based spear-phishing attack, which ultimately leads to the execution of a PowerShell script via a piece of embedded macro code. "The Macro drops 'updater.vbs' creates a scheduled task pretending to be part of a Windows update, which will execute the updater.vbs script from a fake update folder under '%appdata%localMicrosoftWindows,'"said Tomar. Currently 32 security vendors and 18 anti-malware engines have flagged the decoy document and the PowerShell scripts as malicious. The findings come as Microsoft has taken steps to block Excel 4.0 (XLM or XL4) and Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) macros by default across Office apps, prompting threat actors to pivot to alternative delivery methods. Millions of patients compromised in hospital data leak. Nearly 3 million Illinois & Wisconsin patients are caught in a hospital data breach. Advocate Aurora Health, which operates 27 hospitals, said in a statement, “the breach may have exposed information including a patients' medical provider, type of appointments, medical procedures, dates and locations of scheduled appointments, and IP addresses”. The system blamed the breach on its use of pixels, computer code that collects information on how a user interacts with a website, including products developed by Google and Facebook's parent company Meta that make the collected data accessible to those companies. The health care industry's use of pixels has come under wide criticism from privacy advocates who warn that the technology's use violates federal patient privacy law. A report published in June by The Markup found many of the country's top-ranked hospitals used the Meta Pixel, collecting and sending sensitive patient information to the social media company. User space. Texas sues Google for biometric data collecting Texas has filed a lawsuit against Google claiming the tech behemoth took users’ biometric data without permission. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, claims Google is illegally data harvesting Texans using features and devices such as: Google Photos, Google Assistant, and Nest Hub Max. Google spokesman José Castañeda is willing to take the argument to court, “AG Paxton is once again mischaracterizing our products in another breathless lawsuit,”.
