In this episode of the Anglotopia podcast, host Jonathan Thomas speaks with historian Julie Summers about her extensive work in uncovering the hidden corners of 20th-century British history. They discuss her approach to storytelling, the evolution of British Vogue, the significant contributions of the Women's Institute during World War II, and her personal connections to historical narratives. Julie shares insights from her research and the impact of her work on understanding British history. Links Julie Summers' Books on Amazon Julie's Books on Bookshop.org Julie Summer Official Website Home Fires (JustWatch) Takeaways Julie Summers specializes in uncovering untold stories of ordinary people during extraordinary times. Good history is rooted in storytelling, making facts relatable and engaging. The Women's Institute played a crucial role during World War II, contributing significantly to the war effort. British Vogue has evolved from a fashion magazine to a chronicle of British identity. Julie emphasizes the importance of accuracy and detail in historical writing. The requisitioning of country houses during WWII transformed British country house culture. Jam Busters highlights the overlooked contributions of women in wartime. Julie's personal connections to historical figures enrich her storytelling. The impact of social media has changed the role of print magazines like Vogue. Julie is excited about her upcoming book on the Women of D-Day. Sound Bites 1. On the power of details: "I'm totally fixated about the weather—in fact, I'm known in the family as the biggest weather nerd of all times. If I'm describing a scene that happened on a certain day, I will go right back to the original meteorological forecasts." 2. On discovering Our Uninvited Guests: "The chap at the hotel said, 'No, no, no, this hotel was taken over by the Royal Air Force in the war. And the George down there, that was overtaken by the post office because the British government, had Britain been attacked and invaded, were going to send the government and all the major offices of state up to Harrogate.'" 3. On finding Sandy Irvine's boot: "Jimmy Chin said, 'Yeah, it had a foot in it in the sock. And the sock had a name tape on it. And the name tape said A.C. Irvine.' And I went, 'Oh my God, you found my great uncle's foot.' And I literally had not expected it." 4. On the WI's massive contribution: "They made 12 million pounds of jam and preserves during the Second World War—a third of the quantity of jam that was consumed. And all of that was from fruit that they'd either picked from the hedgerows or produced in their own gardens." 5. On Harrods' first escalator (1898): "Management was so concerned about the potential for customer accidents or panic that they stationed an employee at the top offering cognac and smelling salts to those who had completed the 'ordeal.'" 6. On researching her grandfather: "He said, 'Well, like most Englishmen, I can write the story of my sex life on the back of a postage stamp.' And I thought, 'Whew, off the hook!'" 7. On why women's contributions were overlooked: "Shall I say what I really think? It's because they're women. I think the women's voices were drowned out after the Second World War by the incredible stories of heroism of men." 8. On the tragic "Brownies" at Brockett Hall: "The women who were giving birth to illegitimate children were known as the Brownies, and they were set to work in the kitchens at Brockett Hall until they went into second stage labor. They were dressed in brown uniforms—that's why they were called the Brownies. I found that very chilling." 9. On Home Fires being canceled: "The new writer asked the exec producer, 'So how many series are we working towards?' And she said, 'Six, maybe nine.' And three days later, I got a phone call to say, 'We've been cut.' And I let out a big F-bomb." 10. On women and D-Day: "I stood up in front of these historians and said, 'How many women do you think were directly involved in the planning for D-Day?' One man said 100. A woman said 3,000. And I said, 'No. 348,000 British women were involved in the planning for D-Day and more than that of American women.'" Send us a textCorie dedicates this episode to the late matriarch “Mama Doreen,” whose Girl Guides guard-of-honour in a packed Tacarigua church sparked a bigger conversation: the crisis of community and how strong institutions can pull Trinidad & Tobago back from its apparent moral decline. Anchored by memories from the funeral and repass—hymns, kaiso, and hard truths—Corie argues that movements like Girl Guides, Brownies, Scouts, Cadets, school bands, and the Police Band don't just “nice up” events; they form citizens, bridge generations, and repair trust between youth and the State. We salute bandmaster Anthony “Mr” Prospect and explore what Independence parades actually mean, why cancelling them matters, and how pageantry signals “we are us.” We touch this year's National Awards, asking how we value cultural workers next to sport and politics. In the music lane: Leon “Smooth” Edwards' iconic Panorama moments; why brass belongs in our sound; and a canon defence of Shorty—“Endless Vibrations,” “Om Shanti,” and the unfinished business of credit. There's a lively detour into Scorch's 101 soca list—criteria, crowd reaction vs cultural impact—and a real-life car-ride debate about youth music vs parents' music. We also reason through police-in-schools optics, state-of-emergency fatigue, and how uniformed performance (yes, send the Police Band into communities playing the youths' songs) can soften hardened lines. It's gratitude, history, and kaiso—offered for Mama, inspired by the Girl Guides, and focused on rebuilding the institutions that can steady a wobbling society. In the latest episode of the Fairy Whispering podcast, I welcome Melissa Larose, a PhD student from the University of Aberdeen. Melissa shares her experiences, insights and passion for researching faerie belief and folklore. Melissa describes her encounters with a brownie—an impish yet helpful fairy—living in her flat. Melissa discusses how, despite modern scepticism, many people still adhere to traditional practices, leaving offerings for fairies to gain their goodwill. In a particularly striking encounter in an English park, Melissa and a friend unexpectedly came across a green mist and a winged fairy. We discuss how these magical experiences often happen when we're open to them, suggesting a deeper connection to the world around us. We explore the significance of fairy circles and the cultural beliefs surrounding them, learning how different cultures across the globe maintain a connection to fairy lore through rituals and offerings—highlighting a universal bond to nature and the supernatural. Melissa describes her special connection to the Cruikshank Botanical Gardens, and its serene arboretum, which she describes as a 'fairyland' and finds inspiration for her fairy poetry and senses the resident nature spirits.I'm sure you will be captivated by her stories of her fairy experiences and her passion for researching fairies!Join us in this enchanting episode that promises to inspire and ignite your imagination and let your spirit wander through the fairy realms!**Contact the Show:** clairefairywhisperer@gmail.com**Show Notes:** www.thefairywhispering.com**Follow the Magic:** www.instagram.com/fairywhisperingpodcast**Have you seen a fairy?** Share your sightings with the Fairy Census: Fairy Census Submission**Music Credits:**- Intro Music: "Forest of Butterflies" by Twelve Trees- Outro Music: Autumn Beauty Reverie by Claire Casely

The Snowy Day wasn't the first picture book to feature a Black child as its beloved protagonist, but it might be the most visible. When it came out in 1962, it challenged the publishing industry to champion books that depict kids of color. Today, we find ourselves in a moment not so different from the one Ezra Jack Keats was in when he sat down to create The Snowy Day. We are, once again, fighting for the right to let kids read the books they love, and we're still reminding each other that the characters kids see in those books really matters. Simon and Chris are pixelated by household helpers, those elusive, often hairy beings like Brownies, Tomten, and Skrats who muck out stables, scrub pans, rock babies, edit podcasts and occasionally fetch the midwife, all in exchange for a humble bowl of porridge. Our domestic duo explore why these spirits have such complicated relationships with clothing, what draws them to a home (or sends them storming off), and wonder aloud if you can still hire one in today's difficult real estate market. Along the way, the two squabble over whether houses go up or down in value with a helper, the emotional climate of homes, and the surprising requirements for crafting your own supernatural assistant (spoiler: toes and horses are involved). UK helpers are compared with their Scandinavian, North European, and North American cousins. While Simon berates Chris for her shocking ignorance of the Swiss variety, Chris lectures Simon on a brave new world of railway-building brownies on the other side of the Atlantic.

They start with a light-hearted banter that transitions into the deeper purpose of Christian living, stressing how Jesus' teachings from 2000 years ago are still relevant and necessary today. These metaphors come from Matthew 5, where Jesus tells us, “You are the salt of the earth” and “You are the light of the world.” Jason explains that the Greek phrase for salt losing its saltiness literally means salt that “plays the fool” or loses its purpose. He delves into the science of pure salt (NACL), which doesn't lose its saltiness unless mixed with impurities—similar to how a disciple loses their ‘flavor' when their heart isn't pure. They talk about keeping the heart pure, ensuring our impact remains strong. Josh adds humor by discussing the phrase “stay salty,” shifting to a serious note on how to maintain our ‘saltiness' through purity. Using the Dead Sea salt analogy, they stress that impurities can corrupt our faith. Josh highlights fears of losing our spiritual flavor and reassures listeners using Greek terminology to emphasize remaining undiluted. The duo moves into genuine discipleship and the importance of ongoing self-assessment and transparency. Josh discusses Re:generation, a community for overcoming struggles like insecurity and pride, not just addiction, encouraging open sharing for spiritual growth. Jason quotes Romans 7, reminding listeners of our inherent need for Jesus and the weakness in our human nature. This converts to positive action: depending on Jesus to maintain our spiritual 'saltiness.' Josh illustrates the necessity of keeping our hearts and daily activities pure by humorously describing a youth pastor's lesson involving brownies with ‘a special ingredient,' underscoring the impact of even minor impurities. Another key point is that salt produces thirst, and Christian living should evoke curiosity in others. They stress the need for Christians to stand out positively to create spiritual thirst in non-believers. The conversation mentions concerning statistics about issues within the church, like divorce and addiction, indicating a need for Christians to live distinct lives that truly reflect Jesus. Wrapping up, they challenge listeners to pray bold prayers, asking God to reveal and purify any impurities. They emphasize the importance of being filled with the Holy Spirit to maintain their impact on the world. The episode ends on a motivational note, calling for revival and active spread of Jesus' light and teachings.

Before weed was legal in any U.S. state, it was medicine passed hand-to-hand—often in the form of a brownie. In part one of our Webby-nominated series Before Legal Weed, host Ellen Scanlon brings you the untold story of how San Francisco's gay community turned to cannabis during the darkest days of the AIDS crisis—and how a woman-run cannabis operation called Sticky Fingers Brownies quietly became a lifeline. You'll meet Meridy Volz, a mother delivering pot brownies on roller skates through the Castro in the 1980s, and her daughter, author Alia Volz, who grew up watching a revolution unfold from the back of a stroller. Through powerful personal stories and rarely heard history, you'll learn: How a women-run cannabis business became a lifeline for the gay community What it was like to grow up in San Francisco during the height of the AIDS epidemic Why this story still matters in today's conversations around cannabis as medicine

What happens when a food-obsessed cyclist pedals across the U.S. in search of the real American plate? In this fun and heartfelt episode, food writer and national treasure Felicity Cloake joins host Samuel Goldsmith to dish on everything from smoky barbecue and spicy dumplings to Midwest lake culture and late-night toast rituals. Few psychiatrists have ventured beyond the confines of Western clinical thinking. Dr. Ralph Allison was one of the rare exceptions. While treating patients diagnosed with multiple personality disorder, he began to encounter alters that were far more than psychological fragments. These were fully formed, autonomous entities with their own histories, intentions, and, in some cases, violent desires. Some existed to protect. Others sought total control. This might be one of the most important conversations we've had in the Machine Shop MBA series—because we're unpacking a mindset that quietly limits the growth potential of so many shops: the “cashier model.” We've seen it time and time again—shops waiting at the counter for purchase orders to roll in, instead of actively building relationships, solving problems, and driving new revenue. That model might work for a while, but over time it leads to stagnation. That's why we brought in Mike Fritz, a fellow host and the mind behind Machine Shop Growth, to break down exactly why shops get stuck—and how to break out of it. Together, we explore the three customer types every shop must understand: current, dormant, and new. We share how we approach each one, the psychology behind why they buy, and the specific tactics we've used to unlock more value from the accounts we already have—while building smart pathways to growth. If you've ever looked at your sales numbers and wondered why things aren't growing the way they should, this episode might explain why—and what to do next. Jennair and Mark Gerardot had been married for 24 years and together for 28, with a relationship marked by its share of highs and lows. Mark, often passive, contrasted sharply with Jennair, who could be more assertive, even aggressive at times. The couple, without children or much family nearby, were content to focus on their pets, which they both adored. However, when Jennair lost her job and struggled to find a new one, her self-esteem began to take a hit. The couple's dynamic shifted as Jennair's sense of identity eroded. When Mark landed a new job in Delaware, Jennair stayed behind in South Carolina to pack up their life and handle the logistics of their move. This gave Mark six weeks of bachelor-like freedom. During this time, he and his 33-year-old boss, Meredith Sullivan Chapman, began developing a “work crush” on each other, igniting an affair that would change everything. As we left off, Jennair, ever perceptive, had begun to sense that something was off with her husband, though she couldn't yet put her finger on it. What began as quiet suspicions soon spiraled into an all-consuming obsession. Jennair's fixation on Meredith would lead to a devastating conclusion — one that no one could have predicted.Listen to part 2 today on PatreonToday's snack: Brownies from Greyston Bakery (thanks Anne!)Sources20/20 episodehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbCY0mzb1DM&ab_channel=ABCNewshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_DloWsfpug&ab_channel=ABCNewshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXn4al0z-8A&t=354s&ab_channel=ABCNewsSeason 1 of the Bad Bad Thing PodcastIrreparablehttps://www.wcnc.com/article/news/nation-world/husbands-affair-leads-to-murder-suicide-involving-mistress-and-wife-in-pennsylvania-home/507-545703243https://www.wyff4.com/article/former-upstate-mans-affair-leads-to-ambush-killing-of-lover-wifes-suicide-police-say/20065002https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-43899187https://www.newspapers.com/image/422251929/?terms=Jennair%20Gerardot
