Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for May 30, 2026 is: unctuous • UNK-chuh-wus • adjective Unctuous is a word that's undergone change in recent years. It now often describes food that is fatty and oily, especially in a pleasing way. Formerly it was more typically applied as a formal adjective describing someone who is figuratively oily—that is, overly or insincerely flattering. Both uses can be found today. // Braising chicken thighs with their skins on creates a rich, unctuous sauce that can be spooned back over the finished dish. // The mayor's unctuous assistant was making the rounds at the fundraiser, chatting up those known to have the biggest bank accounts. See the entry > Examples: “The thinly sliced pork belly is shaved into curlicues and cooks up super quickly and crisply, so it's great for an impatient group or as a first round. Thick slices are more akin to what you'd find at Korean BBQ restaurants nowadays; they'll cook and sizzle in their own fat … resulting in juicy, unctuous bites.” — Irene Yoo, Soju Party: How to Drink (and Eat!) Like a Korean, 2025 Did you know? Unctuous is a slippery word in multiple ways. Its ultimate source is a Latin word meaning “to anoint; to smear or rub with oil or an oily substance,” and this oily character was key to the word's meaning when it first appeared in the 14th century, as when John Trevisa wrote “Þe fruit of olyue is ful of liȝt, likynge, and vnctuous” (in modern English: “the olive fruit is bright, delicious, and unctuous”). Unctuous here means “fatty” or “oily,” as did its immediate Medieval Latin predecessor unctuosus. This same use of unctuous is quite prominent today, as the word often describes deliciously fatty foods and the sensation of such foods on the palate (as in “an unctuous mouthfeel”). But come across unctuous in literature of the 19th or 20th century and you're more likely to see a less pleasant application, with the word describing a person or behavior that is figuratively oily—that is, overly or insincerely flattering.

Doug and Justin dig into one of Reddit's greatest questions: what's the stupidest thing you've ever heard someone say that still lives rent free in your head? The answers (from the internet and from their own lives) do not disappoint. Stories include: the college roommate who saw cubed chicken and asked if it was pancakes, the hotel coworker who was convinced a rocket launch in Florida made it hotter outside, the customer service caller who had never heard of a browser and genuinely believed she didn't use one, the hotel guest who compared being asked for ID to being interrogated by the Gestapo, the anatomy student who used Coca-Cola as contraception, the woman who signed her name differently every time so no one could forge it, the person who applied for a job and chose the word "ominous" to describe herself, and the woman who planned to bring her TV from home when she moved to Italy so she could still watch her shows. Plus a collection of "Bobisms," hard-earned one-liners from a former baseball ump and retail manager that absolutely hold up, and Doug's dad's legendary if somewhat exhausting burn about brains and trains. Then Doug takes Natalie to an all-you-can-eat Korean BBQ and hot pot restaurant for the first time and comes away a changed man. Justin butchers a 125-pound half hog with his two best friends as a birthday surprise and walks away with 40+ pounds of pork and zero regrets. And the movie audio clip guessing game returns with quotes from Kung Fu Panda, Heat, and Minority Report. This week's recommendations: Justin: Marty: Life is Short on Netflix. Martin Short operates at the speed of joy. Watch it. Doug: Potion Seller's debut album Buzzard is out now. Ten songs, zero filler. Grab it on Bandcamp for $7. Also, Parade of Horribles (Dungeon Crawler Carl Book 8) by Matt Dinniman. Jeff Hayes narrates the audiobook. The series is incredible. Tokyo vs. Paris: Two Completely Different Kinds of Magic Would you rather wander the electric streets of Tokyo or get cozy inside a vintage bookstore in Paris? Tokyo is a sensory overload in the best way possible. It's the kind of place where you don't need a plan—just walking around becomes the experience. You'll find vending machines selling everything from hot meals to mystery items, themed cafés (yes, even hedgehogs), and tiny restaurants that have perfected one dish over decades. Neighborhoods like Akihabara and Shibuya feel like stepping into the future, while places like Shimokitazawa bring a more indie, artsy vibe. Paris, on the other hand, is timeless. It's strolling past the Eiffel Tower at sunset, wandering through the Louvre, or sitting at a café for hours just people-watching. Neighborhoods like Le Marais and the Latin Quarter offer a mix of history, culture, and that effortlessly chic Parisian energy. Travel tip: In cities like these, don't over-plan. Leave room for curiosity—it's where the best moments happen.   NYC vs. Italy: A Food Lover's Dream Would you rather eat your way through New York City or explore the regional flavors of Italy? New York is a global food capital. You can try world-class Korean BBQ, authentic Italian pasta, or fresh seafood—all within a few blocks. It's fast-paced, diverse, and constantly evolving. Italy, though, is an experience in itself. Every region has its own identity—from Neapolitan pizza in Naples to rich ragù in Bologna. Meals aren't rushed; they're meant to be savored. Think multiple courses, local wine, and recipes passed down for generations. Travel tip: In Italy, always order like a local: antipasti, primi, secondi, and dolci. It's not just a meal—it's a ritual. And always order regional dishes—no pizza in Venice!   Rome vs. Bangkok: The Ride Matters Would you rather cruise through Rome on a Vespa or zip through Bangkok in a tuk-tuk? Rome on a Vespa is pure cinematic energy. You're weaving past ancient ruins, stopping for espresso in Trastevere, and catching sunset views from hidden hills. It's chaotic, yes—but it's also unforgettable. Bangkok's tuk-tuks are a whole different kind of thrill. They're fast, a little wild, and the perfect way to bounce between temples, markets, and street food spots. It's less about the destination and more about the ride. Travel tip: In Bangkok, always agree on a price before getting in a tuk-tuk. Trust us on this one.   Rio Carnival vs. Times Square NYE: Expectation vs. Reality Would you rather celebrate Carnival in Rio de Janeiro or New Year's Eve in Times Square? Rio Carnival is vibrant, energetic, and completely immersive. Think music, dancing, elaborate costumes, and nonstop celebration. It's one of the most joyful festivals in the world. Times Square on New Year's Eve… is iconic, but also intense. Massive crowds, long waits, freezing temperatures, and very little personal space. It's one of those “once in a lifetime” experiences—but not necessarily for the right reasons. Travel tip: Sometimes the most famous experiences aren't the most enjoyable. Do your research and decide what kind of vibe you actually want.   Lisbon vs. Barcelona: Hidden Gems or Rooftop Views? Would you rather uncover hidden corners in Lisbon or sip cocktails at rooftop bars in Barcelona? Lisbon is all about discovery. Quiet gardens, tucked-away bookstores, and local neighborhoods full of charm. It rewards slow travel and curiosity. Barcelona brings the energy—especially from above. Rooftop bars offer stunning views of the city, from the Sagrada Familia to the Mediterranean. It's lively, social, and perfect for soaking in the atmosphere. Travel tip: Balance both styles. Plan one to two  “highlight” activities per day, and leave the rest open for exploring.   Final Thoughts: The Best Travel Happens in Between No matter which destinations you choose, the real magic of travel isn't just in the landmarks—it's in the moments you don't plan. It's the café you stumble into. The street you didn't mean to turn down. The conversation with a local that changes your perspective. So next time you're exploring a city, give yourself permission to wander. Because getting a little lost? That's where the best stories begin. And if you're ready to take these ideas even further, this episode is packed with travel tips, cultural insights, and destination inspiration to help you explore beyond the tourist traps and plan a more meaningful trip—definitely one to listen to before your next adventure. See you next Travel Brat Tuesday. Until then, travel deeper, slow down, and don't be afraid to go beyond the obvious.   Listen to the Episode Ready to explore Europe beyond the tourist traps? A family curse is all fun and games until it decides you're next on the list, which is exactly the kind of cheery scenario DEATH NAME (2026) strolls into. The film leans into that unsettling “no escape” vibe—because apparently moving, praying, or Googling “how to break generational hexes” won't help you here. Spells fizzle, geography is irrelevant, and denial only works until the curse taps you on the shoulder. It's a rough setup, but a deliciously eerie one.According to IMDb, the story follows a young Korean American woman who innocently tries to learn more about her heritage—because what could possibly go wrong with a little cultural curiosity? Quite a lot, as it turns out. The deeper she digs, the more she stirs up a deadly family curse that really should've stayed in the attic with the dusty photo albums and that one aunt's questionable kimchi recipe.Directed by the single-named and mysteriously stylish Réi, with a screenplay by Regina Kim, the film stars Amy Keum as Sophie Park, supported by Vana Kim, Kevin Woo, and Alice Bang. It's a lineup that pairs nicely with Korean BBQ, kimchi, and a cold Cass beer—ideal snacks while your co-hosts dive into this new Tubi original and try not to wonder whether their families have been hiding any curses of their own.

We discuss: The songs featured during the recap: “To Me” by Jeong Eun Ji, “Care About You” by K.Will, and “Bright Future” by Park Se Jun and Kim Min Ji. Joanna's New York trip, her Korean barbecue dinner with Ernabel at The Kunjip in Koreatown, and why the restaurant is worth visiting. Why this finale feels satisfying: the reconciliation of the sisters, the healing of the Seo family, and the sense that nearly every major relationship comes full circle. What “scale up” and “R&D” mean in the start-up world, and why Cheongmyeong Company's future depends on both investment and risk-taking. How Nam Do-san traces the ransomware attack to the developer twins, and why their Apollo and Artemis usernames become the key clue. The show's critique of power, revenge, and media manipulation through Morning AI, the corrupt reporter, and Won Du Jeong's treatment of In-jae. The emotional power of the grandmother's storyline, especially her reunion with Han Ji Pyeong and her reminder that he does not have to face life alone. Why Han Ji Pyeong's ending may actually be a happy one: he gains family, purpose, meaningful work, and a way to pay forward the love he received. The Ko Gil Dong foundation, why its mission matters so deeply to Han Ji Pyeong, and how his investment shows his growth from self-protection to generosity. The rooftop conversation between Seo Dal-mi and Han Ji Pyeong, where he finally releases her from any guilt and preserves both his dignity and her respect. A deeper discussion of Second Lead Syndrome, why so many viewers thought Han Ji Pyeong was the real lead, and why Start-Up sparked such fierce debate. The repaired relationship between Seo Dal-mi and Seo In-jae, including the return to their father's name, the meaning of the music box, and the 10,000 won bet. The reconciliation between Nam Do-san and Han Ji Pyeong, culminating in honesty, a handshake, a hug, and an investment deal that signals true mutual respect. The final scenes at Cheongmyeong Company, the symbolism of the wish wall and the elevator, plus the real-life filming location: Hankook Technoplex in Pangyo, designed by Foster + Partners. Sharp and witty while also deeply contemplative; the son of a Jewish mom yet bearing the surname Rivera; a software developer by profession and a practitioner of Muay Thai and BJJ - only in New York, baby. But was it just the magic of dad's night and new friendship that brought out the most gregarious and introspective sides of us? Or would the same David and Shawn who bonded over BBQ show up and dive even deeper over a simple cup of coffee? The answer is pretty clear to me, but I'll let you decide for yourself.

//The Wire//2300Z January 29, 2026////ROUTINE////BLUF: VEHICLE RAMMING ATTACK CONDUCTED IN BROOKLYN. ANTI-ICE PROTESTS CONTINUE AS BEFORE.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------HomeFront-USA: Around the nation, anti-ICE protests and demonstrations continue as before. Civil disruption efforts of varying intensity were carried out over the past couple of days in the usual hotspots: Minneapolis, New York, Eugene (OR), etc. Smaller demonstrations of varying size were also noted overnight in Connecticut, Missouri, Florida, Ohio, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin, California, and Tennessee.New York: Yesterday evening a vehicle ramming attack was conducted at the entrance to the Chabad Lubavitch World Headquarters in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. The assailant attempted to ram his vehicle into one of the subterranean entrances to the facility, ramming into the underground gate several times before being halted. The suspect was detained by police who were providing security for the venue, and later identified as Dan Sohail of New Jersey. Immediately after the incident, a federal civil rights investigation was opened regarding this case.California: Last night a state of unrest was reported at a Korean BBQ in Lynwood, after ICEWatch intelligence networks falsely identified off-duty TSA agents as ICE agents. After a group of off-duty TSA agents were spotted at the restaurant having dinner, backup was called in to the activists dispatch cell, and Rapid Response teams were sent to demonstrate in the parking lot. After some time local law enforcement was also dispatched to the scene, to assist the off-duty TSA agents in departing from the establishment.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: While the individuals targeted in California were obviously not ICE agents, they were still federal agents wearing civilian clothes, so the intelligence networks which identified and targeted them were not that far off the mark. However, targeting random clean-cut guys with fade haircuts, polo shirts, and khakis...in southern California...is not going to work out so well when they inevitably target the wrong crowd by mistake. This has been a wider concern nationwide, following the spooling-up of targeting efforts in Minneapolis, which involve vigilante activists targeting anybody they suspect of being ICE, assumptions which most of the time are false. However, the scale of these efforts is still a major concern; operations which are laughable can become quite serious when these networks are functioning in every major city in the country, with hundreds if not thousands of "whistles behind every blade of grass"...so to speak. While these efforts are quite silly to most people, these vigilante activists are more than willing to die for their cause, which is a detail that should not be underestimated.Analyst: S2A1Research: https://publish.obsidian.md/s2undergroundDisclaimer: No LLMs were used in the writing of this report.//END REPORT//

I met Andrew a couple months ago, when I was invited by a mutual friend to join their quarterly dad outing. I had a great time that night. It started with virtual reality gaming, where the six of us middle aged dads worked as a team to save the world from zombies; followed by all-you-can-eat Korean BBQ, where we turned back the clock and ate like we were 25 again. But the best thing about the night was the friendship. I was meeting three of the 5 other guys for the first time, and they treated me like I had known them for decades. And so, I am trying to get as many of them on the show that I can, to have them help me tell the story of what it means to be a dad today, because I want to see if I can capture for you a bit of what I felt that night: a group of guys, all appreciative of their roles in life as dads, men, husbands, sons, boys, friends, and, above all, works-in-progress. Specific to Andrew, I learned over multiple helpings of meat that, in addition to being dads, he and I are both IT professionals by day and creative side hustlers by night. Perhaps by learning more about his journey, I can understand my own a little better as well.Check out some of Andrew's work:Omnipotent Rex - his published comic book and the source for this episode's cover artCommuter Cast - the sketch comedy referenced during the interview

Robo-chef on wheels serves up Korean BBQ that cooks itself en route

A robotic food truck is cooking up fresh Korean stir-fries without the need for a human chef. At the crossroads of robotics and restaurants, one Silicon Valley startup says it's serving up the future. It's a new kind of food truck hitting the road that might change the way we think about food delivery. In a world where delivery robots are dropping off food, Kish Shin is flipping the script. Kish Shin, CEO & co-founder of Shin Starr Presents, says, "We thought we wanted to disrupt and enhance the food delivery service market by a food truck that is able to cook food autonomously whilst in driving conditions." Inside the truck, the magic happens through a system called Autowok, a modular, AI-powered robot that automates cooking, serving, and even cleaning. Once a human preps the ingredients and stocks the truck, the robot takes over from there. Shin says, "So the value of the truck is it's able to provide freshly cooked food, which is obviously more tasty, better quality food because it's freshly cooked." As the truck drives to your location, the system retrieves ingredients and drops them into a heated, rotating canister, like a high-tech wok. The Autowok fires into life, and hot meals are stir-fried en route. "Once the food is finished, the Autowok dispenses the finished food into the bowl, and the bowl is passed on to the driving section," says Shin. What's more, the robot is even able to clean itself—so no more laborious pot-washing. Shin says, "The Autowok is able to clean itself, to, I want to say, a perfect clean condition." Shin Starr also envisions someday partnering with an autonomous vehicle company. "We're definitely very open to working closely with the likes of delivery bots, as well as driverless trucks, so in which case our next generation trucks wouldn't even require a human driver," he says. The company isn't stopping at food trucks. Shin Starr is preparing to open its first micro restaurant inside a California airport, a fully automated kitchen that serves guests 24/7. In this episode of Next Up, we're joined by Darlene Lopez and Megan Martinson from Eagle Mountain–Saginaw ISD for a powerful look at how food, culture, and education intersect inside today's school nutrition programs. They share their personal journeys into the nutrition world and raise an important question: What inspires someone to choose school nutrition as a career—and how do we bring more people into this work?Darlene and Meghan walk us through their district's creative approach to menu innovation, from culturally inspired meals to fun fusion dishes like spaghetti tacos and Korean BBQ tacos. As they describe balancing flavor with regulations, we're prompted to ask: How can school menus better reflect student diversity while still meeting standards?A big part of their mission lies in nutrition education and community connection. Through newsletters, student feedback, and hands-on learning, they help kids understand why healthy eating matters. Their approach raises another question: Are we giving students a voice in shaping the foods they're served every day?The conversation also highlights their impactful partnerships—from local farms to statewide programs—and how these collaborations enrich both the menu and the community. It leads us to consider: What role should local producers and families play in the future of school meals? This episode is full of inspiration and actionable ideas for anyone passionate about child nutrition, public health, or building stronger school communities.Connect with our guests! website: https://www.emsisd.com/about-ems-isd/departments/child-nutritionConnect with us! In this final episode of Season 3 of Tech It to the Limit, hosts Sarah Harper and Elliott Wilson go global and get grounded with a very special guest. After sharing travel tales from Germany and the HLTH conference, Sarah and Elliott debut their new game, “Trust-O-Meter,” rating real-world health tech scandals and solutions on a scale from “hospital stairwell cell signal” to “grandma's green bean casserole.”Then, they sit down with Dr. David Rhew, Global Chief Medical Officer at Microsoft, for a wide-ranging, surprisingly personal conversation on everything from his pivot from academia to industry ( a VA grant pushed him out) to the future of oculomics, voice biomarkers, and responsible AI. Dr. Rhew breaks down the three layers of bias, explains why implementation is everything, and doesn't shy away from the hard truth about AI and the future of the healthcare workforce. It's a deep, funny, and profoundly human conversation to close out the season. The episode wraps with Wise Nugs and a final health tech haiku, leaving listeners hopeful and ready for Season 4.Key TakeawaysTrust needs humans in the loop :AI earns credibility when it supports clinical workflows, not replaces them.Bias hides in plain sight :Data, model design, and deployment all carry bias. Responsible AI means addressing all three.Implementation eats innovation for breakfast: Technology does not change healthcare; adoption and usability do.Your eyes and voice are the new vital signs :Oculomics and voice biomarkers are turning everyday signals into early detection tools.Equity must be built in, not bolted on:“Neutral AI” does not exist. Fairness and transparency have to be engineered from the start.Automation is not the enemy; stagnation is :AI will replace tasks, not purpose. The key is reskilling and redefining human work.In this episode:[00:00:13] Welcome to the season 3 finale[00:01:19] Host travel log[00:05:24] Game debut: Trust-o-meter[00:22:01] Interview: Dr. David Rhew[00:23:34] Dad jokes and Korean BBQ regrets[00:25:27] From white coat to cloud[00:30:52] Bridging the hype-reality gap[00:34:50] Oculomics: The 2-minute eye scan[00:38:02] The DMA of bias[00:45:27] The TRAIN consortium[00:48:45] Cloud consolidation and data stewardship[00:58:29] Call to action: Operationalizing trust[01:05:32] Spicy nugs: Key takeaways[01:14:09] Health tech haiku and sign-offResources:Tech It To The Limit PodcastWebsite Apple PodcastDr. David RhewLinkedIn -https://www.linkedin.com/in/david-rhew-m-d-1832764/Sarah HarperLinkedIn -https://www.linkedin.com/in/sarahbethharperElliott WilsonLinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/matthewelliottwilson

There's so much more to Korean drinking culture than just soju and Haera Shin wants to tell everyone all about it. From the distinctive (and uniform!) green bottles, to the culture of “first place,” “second place” and “third place” to a fermented rice beverage that's way older than sake, Haera's enthusiasm is boundless and contagious. She sits down with the band to talk about her upcoming book on Korean drinks and cocktails, going from the bar to a marketing degree and back to the bar again, and a new concept in New Orleans she's keeping relatively mysterious… for now.Plus, are zoomers really drinking less than everyone else?
