We had so much fun talking with one of the fastest US women ever at 24 hours (Megan Alvarado) that we decided to do the same for the men. Pete Kostelnick is a two-time winner and the course record holder at the famed Badwater 135, as well as #5 on the all-time US 24-hour list, but he's perhaps best known for his record-setting run across America in 2016, breaking Frank Giannino's 36-year old record by more than four days. This summer Pete took it to a new extreme, running 5300+ miles self-supported from the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska to Key West, Florida—a diagonal crossing of the continent—in just under 100 days. I spoke with Pete about how he got into running long distances (1:30), his experiences at Badwater (10:40), racing 24 hours (16:00), his record TransAmerica run (27:30), and his amazing “Ke2Key” adventure (37:00).LinksPete's Feet Across AmericaPete's InstagramDesert Island Picks: Born to Run by Christopher McDougall, Dizzy Up the Girl by the Goo Goo Dolls, Lagunitas Hop Stoopid, Ska Brewing Modus HoperandiIntro music: "Fine Line" by the BloodlettersOutro music: "When I Was Still Young" by Yard Sale

The mystery deepens with Gideon Falls #3. Both Norton and Fred may have found unlikely allies, but these allies could prove more trouble than they’re worth. A detail almost missed by Davis and Mike nearly ruins all our previous theories and opens a whole new can of worms. Paired with this issue are Lagunitas’ Hop Stoopid and Knob Creek Bourbon in a cup of French Truck Coffee’s Belle Noir, what we’ve dubbed the Father Fred Special.Warning: We will be reviewing the book in excruciating detail. I come with Arrogant Bastard Ale, and somewhere along the way we crack open the Lagunitas Hop Stoopid.  Fortunately, my wife agreed to be my Uber because I’m uber-inebriated.  Ubernebriated.  #FeelTheUbern We continue our conversation about Dave Grohl as an important advocate and ambassador for music and expressive authenticity.  Neither of us particularly like Grohl’s music, but that’s not the point.  The man gives a shit, has a public platform, and is willing to (foo) fight for the arts. #FooFighterForTheArts I ask RJ another misguided but often asked question:  Paul or John?  “This,” RJ is likely to say, “Is a trick question.”  There are so many of these “trick” questions in the world.  May the next person who utters the phrase, “There are no stupid questions,” be immediately barraged with a cluster of stupid questions. #ColdEnoughOutThereForYou Regarding John and Paul?  They don’t work as well without each other.  “For Example,” explains RJ, “Imagine would be a much better song if Paul sang it and wrote the chorus.”  In any awesome band…everyone is integral to the sound of the band, and every player sounds uniquely like him/herself.  “Anyone can (learn to) play Tom Sawyer,” quips RJ, “But nobody will sound like Neil Peart.” And can we make yet another Beatles/Pink Floyd comparison?  Yes, we can.  You’ll perhaps recall that RJ completed my analogy which began, “Ringo is to the Beatles sound as…,” with, “…Nick Mason is to Pink Floyd.”  (Neither were technically “good” drummers, but both defined the sounds of their respective bands.  And not just any bands.  We’re talking about the Beatles and Pink Floyd.)  So, further comparisons: Paul McCartney and David Gilmour are Pop. (In RJ’s words, “They’re like, Yaaaaayyy!  Too much Richard Simmons.”) John Lennon and Roger Waters are sarcastic bastards with venom.  (In Greg’s words, “They’re like, fuck off, you wanker.”) RJ reveals his Mt. Rushmore of drummers and Beatles tunes and responds to a fun little wildcard question.  And he plays, “Enid,” by Barenaked Ladies.  Check out the Cuica. (“QUEE-kah”)  You know what it is, it’s the awesome sound from, “Me and Julio Down By the School Yard.”  You know what?  I’ll just put that song at the end of this.  It’s a great song.  And that cuica.  And the whistling solo?!  C’mon!!  And at the the beginning?  Let’s go with, “Money” by Pink Floyd.  It’s in 7/4, you know?  Except when it’s in 4/4.  It’s a badass tune. Which brings us full circle.  Me and RJ are done.  For now.  There will be more.  But starting next week we begin an epic run of shows with Mark.  Mark’s awesome.  You’ll like him. We present to you, “Will Someone Shut That Bird Up?!” (RJ, pt. 3) -G   Unibrow don’t lie. Shut that bird up!

In this episode, we falsely claim that Troeg’s Brewing was acquired by one of the brewing world’s big guns, but this is not true. Not at all  Here’s the story.  This makes me incredibly happy, even though I wasn’t initially super stoked by the label-art redesigns.  They are beautiful, though. (If you’re ever in/near Hershey, it’s absolutely worth your time to stop at the brewery, eat at the exceptional and amazing “snack bar,” which is an understatement of epic proportions, and take the tour.)  Sometimes I’m a crotchety old traditionalist, though…particularly when it comes to big things that I used to know and love when they were considerably smaller.  So, Troeg’s.  We had Nugget Nectar tonight (7.5 ABV, 93ish IBU).  We did this post Lagunitas Hop Stoopid and Imperial Pils, which is becoming a bit of a tradition for us.  Get buzzed on the Lagunitas, hit record, and bring that buzz to a drunk with a new brew. So, what is the topic today? We talk about absurd Twitter battles (…I know, the word “absurd” is entirely unnecessary and is implied by the following two words…) and misinformed bro-beefs. First, B.o.B. versus Neil deGrasse Tyson regarding the following question: Is the world flat? Really.  It wasn’t a joke.  I mean, it’s a fucking joke…but it wasn’t to B.o.B. (His Twitter profile leads me to believe that he also believes the moon landing was faked.  Perhaps by Stanley Kubrick.  Yikes.) This is a real thing that just happened.  A fairly popular hip hop and pop music artist, that being B.o.B., claims that there is NOT irrefutable evidence that the earth is round; that, in fact, there is much conspiracy-theorist-nut-job-driven data pointing in the direction of human beliefs circa 300 BC.  An actual scientist and also popular culture icon, that being deGrasse Tyson, argued with him.  And the fall out includes several songs.  Here’s B.o.B.’s.  Here’sTyson’s.  I don’t know, maybe we should prepare for the Armageddon. Next, we try to interpret the Wiz Khalifa/Kanye West Twitter battle.  Think about that.  A friggin’ Twitter battle.  Not a physical fight.  Not a drive-by shooting.  Not even a verbal confrontation.  Just two dudes, presumably of average intelligence, arguing with each other over a social media platform.  About…really, it’s entirely unclear; or at least not worth any additional cognitive energy to explain here.  Is this what we’ve become?  When hip-hop hatred needs to be modified and telegraphed to fit the character constraints of an application?  I guess. And through this entire thing, Jen ends up becoming a fan of B.o.B.’s flow and the producers with whom he works. Here we go…presenting to you, “#HipHopisDead.” Oh, the music!  At the beginning, “Blues Music” by G Love and Special Sauce.  At the end, “Hip Hop is Dead,” by Nas.  And just below, the iconic image of the iconic Notorious B.I.G.       B-I-G…P-O…P…P-A

Tonight’s the night we’ll make history. Honey, Jen and I. ’cause we’ll, by any means, give you a pleasant time, and stay with you here tonight… …except I drank a glass of Lagunitas Hop Stoopid (9% abv West Coast IPA), 2 bottles of Founders Backwoods Bastard (11.6% abv bourbon barrel aged ale), and a cup of Nighttime Theraflu (100% guarantee of a slow sleepy slide into cognitive-linguistic oblivion, unless you sneeze like Gary.  Or Jen. AHHHHH….HEEEEYYYYYYYY!)… …so… …a gathering of Angels appeared above my head. They sang to me this song of hope and this is what they said: They said, “Come sail away. Come sail away. Come sail away yinz guys.” Fun times. What else happened? Alan Rickman died, and I wield Snape’s wand for the evening. Additionally, I used the Sherriff of Nottingham’s spoon to stir my TheraFlu. (Why a spoon, cousin?) Any other topics? Yep. Who is the least appealing of the Spice Girls? (Earthy Spice) Jen already makes amazing chocolate chip cookies. This has been confirmed by hundreds of unbiased humans across the past 10 years. Tonight, she creates an oatmeal cookie…and we’re generally not oatmeal cookie people…that is revelatory. How can that be? (Jen’s a baking alchemist. The Severus Snape of the oven. Domo Arigato, Ms. Spatulotto.) Can a man ejaculate while flaccid? (Yes.) Is it a sad, unsatisfying endeavor? (Always.) What’s said man’s history of mistake-sex followed by dramatic fall-out and compounded self-loathing as a percentage of total partners? (50) Is it impossible to keep an alias straight when utterly intoxicated? (Absolutely) You should really listen to this one. That’s it then. Cancel the kitchen scraps for lepers and orphans, no more merciful beheadings, and call off Christmas. We present to you, “Sloppy Snape and Sad Sex.” P.S.  If it wasn’t obvious from the first several paragraphs AND the associated links, this podcast is a Styx sandwich, with “The Best of Times” at the beginning and “Come Sail Away” at the end.  I wrote it once and I’ll write it again…fun times.

Hello good people of Earth. Here you will find a podcast in which, for the first time, we record using microphones on the Zoom H4. Unfortunately, the device shit the digital bed (…with zeros, ones, AND number twos…) on the first recording. But we persevered and got a good conversation signed, sealed, and delivered. Furthermore, we figured out a low budget method of sound-boarding (…it’s like water boarding but for your ears and, perhaps, not so tortuous…) and music-playing with Jen connecting her phone to our bluetooth speaker then putting her microphone next to said speaker. It’s an indication of things to come when we can afford proper microphones, integrated hardware and software, and our own recorder. Given our standard vocal mics (…borrowed from a cappella groups past, thank you very much M.L. and Evolushun…), Jen needed to remember to always hold the thing like an ice cream cone, or, better yet…well, a penis. As one’s head moves, so must one’s microph…allus. Additionally, Kate thought the mics were laser lights. So that was fun times. So what about the booze?! Greg has Southern Tier Compass, and gives it a resounding thumbs up. It is bottle conditioned imperial sparkling ale brewed with rose hips and citrusy hops. Fun, huh? ABV: 9.0% Very fun! Jen enjoys Lagunitas Hop Stoopid, which is the best cheapest IPA on the market by fucking far. Don’t let the “cheapest” dissuade you, it stands up to much more expensive beers, but it’s in the vicinity of $5 for a 22 ounce bottle at our local grocery store. This has become our “go to” IPA. So what about the episode?! We explore locals ordering “Eye-talian” food using a pseudo-accent at the Olive Garden; Paul McCartney whoring himself out to play shitty, uncreative chords under Kanye West’s auto-tuned vocals (Four Five Seconds, click at your own risk, particularly if you have even a modicum of respect for Sir Paul); Greg’s preference for Yoko Ono over Kanye West (…who seems to be Paul McCartney’s Yoko Ono…); and the wonderful & hilarious Sister Veronica-Pooh Nash Poleate with her sound advice (ambiguity intended) for Summer beach vacationers. The featured intro music is composed and performed by a dear friend R.J. It’s called “I Can Read Your Mind.” The outro music is the “That’s the Shark’s House” remix, brilliantly done by Brett from LA. Nothing like a good viral video remix to get you in the mood for fun! So listen, and have some. Fun, that is. And booze. (BTW, we did not heed Sister Poleate’s advice and obviously did not get ate up by a shark during our recent vacation to South Cackalacka, though we spent plenty of time in the ocean.) -G
