Judgy Crime Girls

Subscriber-only episodeThe Doodler is one of San Francisco's most infamous cold-case serial killers — although not for lack of leads. The Doodler is believed to have killed at least six and up to fourteen men in San Francisco between Jan. 1974 and Sept. 1975. He targeted gay men, likely luring them into sexual encounters before killing them and leaving their bodies on beaches or in parks around the city. Three men were somehow able to escape the Doodler's clutches and gave police a description of the man and a sketch was released to the public. Despite police repeatedly questioning one man, the  Doodler has evaded capture for nearly 50 years, but we hope he's next on the list for forensic genetic genealogy testing.Anyone with information is asked to call the SFPD 24-hour tip line at (415) 575-4444 or Text a Tip to TIP411 and begin the message with SFPD. Barbara Rae Venter is the President and Founder of Firebird Forensics Group. Barbara identified the mother of Lisa Jensen, who was kidnapped as an infant and then abandoned by her abductor as a 5-year-old. This was the first use of what is now known as Investigative Genetic Genealogy (IGG) in a criminal case. Identification of who Lisa's mother was led to the NH State Police solving the murder of the Allenstown Four in Allenstown, NH, also known as the Bear Book Murders. https://firebirdforensics.org/barbara-raeventer Sources available upon request. Thanks for listening! MJ's guest is Founder of Booker Vineyards, one of Paso Robles Legendary Artisanal Cult Wineries, Eric Jensen. Eric and his wife Lisa Jensen purchased 100 acres of property in Paso Robles, CA in 2001 with the intent of growing the best fruit for some of the best wineries in the area. After making wine with Justin Smith (of Saxum) for five years and Stephan Asseo (of L'Aventure Wines) for two years, the Jensens decided it was time to create their own expression with Booker Vineyard. The 2005 Vintage was Booker Vineyard's first release with the wines being made by Eric himself. The vineyard received organic certification in April of 2021. In this episode, Eric is fresh in the studio after a big night of celebrating in NYC - and he and MJ quickly jump into discussing the bottles. This conversation is unscripted and full of heart. The opinions about wine and winemaking are candid and real. From Eric's humble beginnings in San Dimas, CA to his early days of cold calling to his absolute love of Paso Robles and its winemakers - make sure your ear pods are charged, you don't want to miss a minute of this one! What a great conversation with Laura Draycott from Wink I Wear! It was a ton of fun getting to know her. You can hear Episode 14 of the I Love Kelowna Podcast here. If you enjoyed this episode, an iTunes review would be SO appreciated! https://tinyurl.com/y8jax3xb SHOW NOTES Laura was born in Hamilton, Ontario and grew up in Calgary, Alberta. Now in the eyeglass business for a decade. Fell in love with the wine, the people and the mountains of Kelowna and moved here in 2011. A gradual introduction into the eyeglasses business: working at an eyeglass shop that wasn’t stylish or run the way she KNEW she could run her own shop. A love of fashion and design, and some horrible bosses, gave her the impetus to become an entrepreneur with the full support of her husband. Fun trips to New York to shop for eyeglasses at the world’s largest eyewear trade show, the International Vision Expo. Also: Vegas, Paris, and Florence, Italy! Learning to master Social Media Marketing and how it’s really helped launch the business. Swinging with the Stars and the Red Dress Gala – a great way to support local charities and give back to the community. Recovering from a devastating life experience. The challenges and victories from opening a brand new and very unique store. Dealing with rough customers. The two things she loves the most about running this business, and the 2 or 3 typical frustrations. A big shoutout to Michael Levigne from Time Brokers, and Lisa Jensen from The Ten Spot!Support the show (https://paypal.me/lukemenkes)

Episode 100!  Thanks for sticking with the show! Spencer Smilanick aka Captain Spoo Diggity is the lead vocalist of The Pirates Charles.  So many good "where did that name come from" stories in this episode! Where the band name came from will have you on the floor.  Pull your car over before that section so you don't hit anything. We'll go deep into how Spencer has crafted his pirate persona and is able to tell deeply personal stories through his music, often without the audience even knowing it.  And we'll chat some biz stuff too about what it's like being such a different kind of band in the Los Angeles market. And, of course, we'll spin a track from their new album Invictus called "Fortress of Five Kings". And to celebrate the 100th episode of Under The Crossbones, I invited a bunch of past guests to call in and update us on what they're doing now.  Interviews are great, but they're just a snapshot in time.  Fun to catch up with all the cool folks we've been listening to the last couple years. Under The Crossbones is a podcast all about pirate culture.  Your host Phil Johnson (comedian, musician, and pirate geek) interviews the most interesting people in the pirate subculture: Actors, Authors, Historians, Musicians, Artists, Festival Founders, Clothing and Prop Designers, Treasure Hunters, Archaeologists, and more. Live shows and a busy summer mean there’s nothing special about our 250th episode, except insofar as each and every one of our episodes is a special wonderful delight! Alias Hook is a 2014 book that asks what Peter Pan and Neverland would seem like from the perspective of one Captain James Hook. The answer is: not great! But as with so many works of fiction that put us in the shoes of sometime antagonists, it adds interesting layers to Hook and to the Peter Pan-theon even if the straight action and romance sequences aren’t anything to write home about.
