To commemorate the tenth anniversary of Lost In The Dream, The War On Drugs put together a special long-form episode of their Super High Quality Podcast to tell the behind-the-scenes story of how the record was made. Between sessions in Hoboken and North Carolina, Adam Granduciel worked regularly with engineer Jeff Zeigler in Philly adding “paint” to a collection of songs that would be widely hailed as the band's first masterpiece on its release in March 2014. As the band struggled against the repetition and inevitable distractions of working close to home with local friends and collaborators, as the recordings took shape, Adam  was simultaneously struggling with the unpredictability of his own mental health. The first new album from The War On Drugs in four years has finally arrived. Steve considers The War On Drugs his favorite band of the last decade, while Ian considers them in a similar lane as Tame Impala or Beach house, where the music is enjoyable but does little more for him than establish “vibe.” Musically, I Don't Live Here Anymore is a refinement of the craft the band explored on 2017's A Deeper Understanding, which itself was a refinement of 2014's Lost In The Dream. Will this finally be the record that wins Ian over?In this week's Recommendation Corner, Ian is plugging the new book Sellout, as well as Another Kill For The Highlight Reel, the new record from New Jersey band Save Face, which sounds like a lot of the bands covered in the book Sellout. Starting 2021 off with the most contemporary album they have discussed to date, Chris and Jon do a deep dive into 2014s Lost in the Dream from American indie rock band, The War on Drugs. Upon its release, this album quickly garnered praise from critics, many of whom considered it to be one of the best albums of the year.  Lost in the Dream is a moody, atmospheric, and emotional journey that showcases the talents of prolific singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Adam Granduciel, and this hauntingly beautiful album has its roots in American folk-rock, synth-rock, 1980s new wave, and psychedelic rock. 

“Eyes To The Wind” was a standout track on The War On Drugs' 2014 album Lost In The Dream and quickly became a crowd favorite during its live shows.  In Part 1 of our Super High Quality Podcast, the band tries to dissect exactly how the arrangement was reinvented when leader Adam Granduciel pushed the band to find their way through a somewhat spontaneous new acoustic version onstage in Copenhagen in 2017.  Possibly the result of questionable venue catering, and certainly inspired by the crowd, the band succeeded in the reinvention by reconnecting with each other onstage during that performance.   A mature acoustic version of “Eyes To The Wind”, affectionately now dubbed “Copenhagen Wind”, is featured on the new live album, LIVE DRUGS.Host: Dominic EastGuests: Adam Granduciel, Dave Hartley, Robbie Bennett, Charlie Hall, Anthony LaMarca, Jon Natchez, Craig McQuiston

How did The War On Drugs get to this point, with a brilliant new LP that has many critics calling them America's next great band? I called up Dan DeLuca, long-time music critic for the Philadelphia Inquirer, to talk about the band's career, its roots in Philly, and the formative influences on frontman Adam Granduciel.
