Ben Greenberg: Analog Thinking While Working in Digital

A classically trained guitarist who studied composition at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, Manhattan native Ben Greenberg is a prolific record producer, engineer, songwriter, and performer who coheres conservatory training with a deep history across many different genres of underground music.Known as a founding member of respected industrial/metal group Uniform and a former member of The Men, Zs, and many more, Greenberg has been described by Ben Ratliff of the New York Times as “a good musician [...] and boss of his own one-man guitar project, Hubble.” Ben's rich and varied performance history ranges from over two decades touring with bands to performing for legendary composers like Glenn Branca and Terry Riley. In the year 2000 Greenberg began assisting Grammy-award winning engineer Mike Marciano at Systems Two Recording in Ditmas Park, Brooklyn. It was here that he learned the fundamentals of recording on 2” tape alongside early Pro Tools systems. He would go on to build his own recording studio in Brooklyn (Python Patrol) and work out of world-class studios all around the globe (Electrical Audio, The Magic Shop, Strange Weather, The Pool, Sonic Ranch). Greenberg's studio credits include Danny Elfman, Depeche Mode, Drab Majesty, Wicca Phase Springs Eternal, Junglepussy, Show Me The Body, Drew McDowall, Black Marble, and Christeene, among many others. His process attends to the essence of the artist's vision and exacts a cultivated philosophy of sound upon them. The result is something between organic and synthetic: A magic that locks in the music's emotional resonance with the listener.Since the 2010s, Greenberg has produced and mixed award-winning scores for film and television. He is the principal engineer to the scores of composer Brian McComber (ex-Dirty Projectors), including the A24 productions It Comes At Night and Krisha, as well as Kingdom of Silence (Showtime), 16 Shots (Showtime), Little Woods (Neon), Mickey and The Bear (Utopia), and Fair Play (Netflix), among others. Greenberg was Randall Dunn's mix assistant for the Jóhann Jóhannsson score to Panos Cosmatos' 2018 film, Mandy (SpectreVision), and Dunn's co-engineer for the 2022 score to Julio Torres' Problemista (A24). Greenberg has also mixed Ella Van Der Woude's scores for Something You Said Last Night (Elevation Pictures) and Silver Haze (EMU Films), and in 2024 he won a Cinema Audio Society award for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing - Documentary, for his stereo and surround mixes of JD Samson's score for Sam Green's 32 Sounds (DofMP).IN THIS EPISODE YOU'LL LEARN:Starting music production at a young ageFinding jobs in the music industryDealing with parents who might not understand your passionsWorking on metal, jazz, and everything in betweenSwitching your workflow for different genresUnderstanding what to listen for with compressionHow to approach a new mixWhy volume and panning are your most important toolsDetermining when plugins are worth purchasing Working with Danny ElfmanPurposely doing lessTo learn more about Ben Greenberg, visit: https://circularruin.com/Ben-GreenbergLooking for 1-on-1 feedback and training to help you create pro-quality mixes?Check out my coaching program Amplitude and apply to join:https://masteryourmix.com/amplitude/ Want additional help with your music productions? For tips on how to improve your mixes, visit: https://masteryourmix.com/ Download your FREE copy of the Ultimate Mixing Blueprint:

This week, we're joined by artist and composer, David Longstreth of Dirty Projectors. Known for his genre-defying work and singular creative vision, David sits down with Jeremy to talk about scoring the new A24 film The Legend of Ochi and the process behind his latest album, Song of the Earth—a sweeping collection of orchestral songs that blurs the line between the classical and the contemporary. The two dive into the rhythms of fatherhood, the unexpected joy of sharing a stage with Bernie Sanders, and the simple pleasures of swimming and meditating. It's a wide-ranging, thoughtful conversation with one of music's most curious minds.*Sponsored by Bezel - the trusted marketplace for buying and selling your next luxury watch

On today's episode, I talk to musician David Longstreth. Originally from Southbury, CT, David recorded his first album The Graceful Fallen Mango after dropping out of college. After returning to finish his degree, he began recording under the name Dirty Projectors, and in 2003, Western Vinyl released their first album The Glad Fact. They continued to record albums and slowly built a name for themselves in the thrumming Brooklyn music scene of the aughts. In 2009, Domino released their album Bitte Orca to a great deal of acclaim, and in all, the band has released 20 albums and EPs; their latest, Song of the Earth, is a collaboration with the German orchestral group s t a r g a z e, and it's fantastic! Hey folks, welcome to the latest episode of the Ecosystem Member podcast. This is our first episode of a new set of recordings after a little break. I recorded a bunch of episodes at the end of 2024 to get us to March. I used that break to write a fiction book exploring a lot of themes from this podcast and I'm really proud of the result. I put my whole heart into the story so I am hoping we'll be able to get published soon. If you know a literary agent or publishing house exec, send them my way.Today's episode though, is also something I'm really proud of. I try to be really thoughtful about the people who I invite to be guests on the podcast and often times I send agents or publicists an email and I hear nothing back, so I was ecstatic what I actually heard back from the representatives of today's guest. Dave Longstreth is a songwriter, composer and band leader you probably know best from his most widely known work with the band he created - Dirty Projectors. I came across an article in The New Yorker about Dave's latest project ‘Song of the Earth' and I knew I had to have him on the podcast. As we talk about in the episode, the piece is ultimately an affirmation and optimistic, but it explores some challenging elements of our relationship with nature, including using a passage from David Wallace-Wells book ‘The Uninhabitable Earth' in a song to illuminate some shocking truth about how we treat Planet Earth. In addition to exploring the tensions and ideas in ‘Song of the Earth', we talk about one of his most well-known collaborations with the Icelandic singer Björk on the album Mount Wittenberg Orca. As Dave talks about in the episode, this music was written with the idea of the singers as a pod of whales with Björk being the mother whale. I remember hearing it when it came out in 2011, but the meaning and impact expanded in the context of the themes of the podcast when I re-listened to it to prepare for this episode. Toward the end, we also discuss the new film Dave scored called The Legend of Ochi. As of this recording it hasn't hit my local theater, but it is backed by A24, so I think we can safely assume that it is definitely worth checking out. Dave is a super smart and thoughtful dude and I hope you appreciate his openness in discussing his work and experiences as much as I did during the conversation. Beginning with the album's titular inspiration, Mahler's Song of the Earth, Connery and Longstreth discuss the surprising proximity of Mahler and the Beach Boys; the courage to write a triad; Longstreth's affinity for echo chambers; and what it means to try to write music about the environment. Of the album's penultimate song he says: “[Given] the legitimate despair that...the record conjures, to summon the opposite, to summon hope, didn't feel easy. It did feel insane. It's an insane way to end the record.”Support the show

David Longstreth on Dirty Projectors, Orchestral Experimentation, and the Radical Psychedelia of FatherhoodDavid Longstreth stands at a fascinating creative crossroads. For twenty years, he's been the driving force behind Dirty Projectors, crafting music that defies easy categorization while earning collaborations with icons like Björk, Rihanna, and Paul McCartney. Now, with his ambitious new orchestral song cycle "Song of the Earth," Longstreth explores our shifting relationship with nature while processing what he calls "the radical psychedelia of fatherhood."Speaking from his California home studio (formerly a kitchen, before that a garage that "bloomed with mold"), Longstreth reveals how this project emerged from conversations with his longtime friend Andre de Ritter, conductor of the Berlin-based ensemble Stargaze. Drawing inspiration from Gustav Mahler's "Das Lied von der Erde," Longstreth initially set out to write nature poems, only to discover his feelings about the natural world had "gotten weird" – reflecting our collective anxiety about climate change. The beauty of Longstreth's approach lies in his embrace of uncertainty. Throughout our conversation, he repeatedly describes putting himself in musical situations "beyond what I'm capable of," allowing the learning curve itself to become part of the creative process. This has been his method since recreating Black Flag's "Damaged" album from memory for Dirty Projectors‘ 2007 "Rise Above" (deliberately avoiding revisiting the original) through to this orchestral collaboration that marries environmental themes with deeply personal transformation.Perhaps most captivating is Longstreth's description of how parenthood has fundamentally altered his perception. Watching his three-year-old daughter experience the world for the first time has made him question everything he knows, creating a profound sense of renewal that directly influences the emotional landscape of "Song of the Earth." Twenty years into his career, Longstreth has found a way to make music that feels simultaneously ambitious and intimate, political and personal – a rare achievement worth celebrating. If you're enjoying Lost and Sound, please do subscribe and leave a rating or review on Apple, Spotify, Amazon, or wherever you listen. Proper polymaths have one guiding principle: love every genre you explore. And it's clear from the first note of any Olga Bell album she's dedicated to that rule. The classically trained pianist, electronic warlock and hip-hop connoisseur hasn't found a sound she can't warp and adore. At the beginning of the decade she toured with The Dirty Projectors and Chairlift and released Край an exceptionally ambitious project dedicated to the music of her native Russia. But a wondering spirit like Bell gets bored and her next album, Tempo, was an ode to dance music, bouncing from BPM to BPM and dance move to dance move. The opening song “Power User” was a stately mix of G-Funk, Beastie Boys brattiness, dancefloor empowerment and terrifyingly catchy synth-pop. So, listen to our interview with Bell, read up on “Power User” and see why we think it's one of the best of the 10s. “I think being an artist requires a certain amount of delusion and then checking that delusion. ” — Olga Bell

Trigger warning! It was The Dirty Projectors! We talk about identifying and disabling your own triggers. What is a trigger? It's an unwanted emotional response to a "negative" stimulus. Ultimately, it's how people control us, and with practice, you can disable your own triggers, making you a valuable leader in a hyperbolic world. This week's readings were very triggering. Please be advised. The fire reading worried over STI fears. Earth talked about how religious judgments build walls of anger. Wind was a cluster # of ex energy. They want to talk. Water was a separation reading and zoomed in on an individual father that needs proper legal advice. Our readings start general and focus more specifically to help one person in particular. I'm really starting to understand that about my tarot reading style. The love note is to a leader, and it was hot. They can't wait to rip off your clothes. It's important for your identity to recognize your triggers and stop letting people guilt you into their bidding. It's time to go! On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a very cool episode that was inspired by a very cool performance coming up in Los Angeles soon. It's David Longstreth in conversation with Phil Elverum. Longstreth is the focal point of the band Dirty Projectors, which formed about 20 years ago in Brooklyn, and was part of a scene that kind of elevated indie-pop into something more serious and timeless. It's been clear throughout the years that Longstreth is a musical searcher, having never been content to repeat himself. That's led to an incredibly varied catalog that can even border on pleasantly confusing, and the huge undertaking that he's in the midst of—and the starting point of this conversation—is no exception. About 10 years ago, Longstreth began working on what I'd guess you'd call a contemporary classical song cycle called Song of the Earth, which he performed with the ensemble stargaze a few years back. He's since been refining and reworking the piece, and along with Dirty Projectors and the world-renowned L.A. Philharmonic, he'll perform it on March 2 at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. That's a huge group of people and a massive undertaking—and not to be missed. At almost the opposite end of the spectrum will be that evening's opening act, Mount Eerie, aka renowned minimalist songwriter Phil Elverum. Elverum is almost a mythical figure in indie-rock, having forged a truly unique path over the past decade, first under the name The Microphones and later Mount Eerie. His music is often deeply personal, and he'll move from simply structured indie-folk into fully immersive lo-fi drones in ways that can confound and disarm. His catalog is wide and deep, though if you're unfamiliar with his music, a good place to start is 2001's The Glow Pt. 2. At this concert, he'll not only open the show for Dirty Projectors but he'll also—as you'll hear—participate a little bit, because Longstreth tapped Elverum to help out on a Song of The Earth piece called “Twin Aspens.” They were nice enough to give us a preview of the piece here, so check out a little bit of a not-quite-final version of “Twin Aspens,” composed by Longstreth and with some help from Elverum. As you'll hear in this conversation, these guys are deeply immersed in music, and certainly not just pop music. From hearing them chat I learned about Japanese Gagaku music, among other things. They also talk at length about Elverum's incredible album-length song “Microphones in 2020,” which is essentially a history of his own evolution, with a fascinating visual to go along with it. They also talk a lot about starting the creative process with a palette in mind, which I found fascinating as well. Enjoy the chat, and if you're in the L.A. area, I think there are a few tickets left for this once-in-a-lifetime performance on March 2. Enjoy.  Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast and thanks to David Longstreth and Phil Elverum for talking. He represents music venues in New York that have hosted appearances from cutting-edge indie rock bands like Foals, Deerhunter, and Dirty Projectors. Michael is an experienced lawyer and has deep roots in the New York DIY community. Michael's approach to counseling clients is one that recognizes that his role is not to stifle the pursuit of outcomes when the inevitable roadblocks occur but to help clients find solutions that work from a business and legal perspective. He is passionate about applying his legal training and skills to help musicians and other creative professionals support themselves through their artistic talents. Prior to starting his own practice, Michael represented investors who suffered losses due to corporate fraud. He helped secure over a billion dollars in settlement awards for these clients.  In this episode, we discuss: - Surrounding yourself with creatives can help balance your practice and your inner passion for the job. - This can also help you get out of the mindset of thinking there is only one solution. Creatives help you think outside the box.  - Developing friendships and connections with former clients through meaningful work together. - Senior counsels being stuck in their ways; maybe it's time to rethink how you're doing things if it's been a while.  - Artists don't often have a lot of people to speak up for them; by doing so, it can create a lasting difference for the firm and your practice.
