"Alice" is a sitcom that aired on CBS from 1976-1985. The show is based on the 1974 Martin Scorsese film, "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore". The story follows Alice Hyatt, a widow who moves from New Jersey to Phoenix, Arizona, with her son, Tommy. She then takes a job at a roadside eatery named Mel's Diner. One of the show's catchphrases, "Kiss my grits!" remains a part of the cultural lexicon. The show was a ratings success, especially during its early seasons. Alice's nine season run made it one of the longer-running sitcoms of the '70s and '80s. Despite having such a long run the show didn't recieve much syndication and is rarely seen modern day. Will this show hold up with the S1E1 boys nearly 50 years since the show premiered? Listen as they deep dive the show's pilot episode. He released his debut album Kristofferson in 1970. Among his songwriting credits are "Me and Bobby McGee", "For the Good Times", "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down", and "Help Me Make It Through the Night", all of which became hits for other artists. Kristofferson was also a member of the country music supergroup the Highwaymen between 1985 and 1995. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2004 and received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014.During the 1970s, Kristofferson also embarked on a successful career as a Hollywood actor. He became known for his roles in Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (1973), Blume in Love (1973), Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974), and A Star Is Born (1976); for the latter, he earned a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor. His acting career waned somewhat following his role in the box office bomb Heaven's Gate (1980), but he continued to act in films such as Stagecoach (1986), Lone Star (1996), and the Blade film trilogy (1998–2004).This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:26 UTC on Tuesday, 1 October 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Kris Kristofferson on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Joey.

The overrated Wes Anderson, a one-way ticket to Palookaville, things said at your eulogy, a couple bad jokes, a couple great and horrific French movies, San Jose surprises me for once, Johnny Flynn is pretty damn cool, earning your ovation, a completely amazing new French movie about people turning into creatures, artificial highs don't cut it in the end, the downfall of Hunter S. Thompson, the eventual and final fade out, and a storytelling song. Stuff mentioned: Bottle Rocket (1996), The Royal Tenenbaums (2001), Palookaville (1995), Alice (1976-1985), Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974), The Beast (2023), Henry James The Beast in the Jungle (1903), Martin McDonagh Hangmen (2015), Beast (2017), Martin McDonagh The Lieutenant of Inishmore (2001), Poolman (2023), Humanity (1999), Li'l Quinquin (2014), Twentynine Palms (2003), The Animal Kingdom (2023), Storytelling (2001), Kids (1995), and Belle and Sebastian "Storytelling" (2002).

In our latest FRAGGLE TALK: CLASSIC, we review episode 3 of season 2, “The Trash Heap Doesn't Live Here Anymore,” in which Philo and Gunge recruit Wembley and Boober to help Marjory through some big changes. PLUS: Doc goes full Mr. Wizard. Forsoothian Gorgs! Fraggles = Hobbits? The Dark Souls II Gender-Swap Coffin-Toolshed. Wheelbarrow naps! The many accents of Marjory.
Stephen Paul Campos surmised it would be better to volunteer and choose his military specialty rather than be drafted during the Vietnam War. The recruiter asked what he wanted to do and Campos replied “I don't know what I WANT to do but I know I DON'T want to be infantry.” Based upon his intake evaluations the recruiter told him he could be sent to Germany or Hawaii. Immediately upon graduation he was assigned to the infantry and soon after sent to Vietnam. Campos shares that the environment was just as much a threat as the enemy. As if the torrential rains weren't bad enough, there were things slithering in the water that could kill you. Campos survived more than a couple friendly fire incidents and malaria almost killed him. As a radio operator he had the unique experience of relaying his Lieutenant's refusal to obey orders. That Lt. was replaced the next day and “it was a good thing because that guy was going to get us killed.” Campos recalled being met by war protestors upon his return stateside and many lifelong friends didn't want to talk about the war. Campos fell into a lifestyle of drugs and alcohol. Upon hitting rock bottom, he had a spiritual awakening that he says literally transformed his life. He now owns and operates “Senor Campos Salsa”, a successful online food service business. Campos never wanted to talk about his experiences in Vietnam until he was interviewed by a reporter during a visit to the Vietnam War Memorial. His wife suggested he begin writing about his experiences. He has now published several books including “Charlie Doesn't Live Here Anymore”. TAKEAWAY: The whole time Campos was in combat he prayed for God to keep him safe. He also prayed that he would not have to kill anyone.
Love in relationships often fade away for many. There are indicators and signs that are often in plain sight, but we fail to acknowledge them and just simply overlook them. When it's all said and done, it leaves you broken, confused, asking questions, and wondering what could I have done differently. When the one you're with just outright and admittedly doesn't love or want you anymore, it just may be time to move on.

Buckle up, because we're heading back to 1974 and diving into two cinematic sinkholes of desperation, debauchery, and… digging for dead bodies? For Episode 40, Brad's thrown Jake into the grimy, gambling purgatory of "The Gambler," while Jake's plunged Brad into the blood-soaked, tequila-fueled odyssey of "Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia." First up, Brad's wrestled with James Caan's Axel Freed, a down on his luck teacher in pursuit of one last roll of the dice. Brace yourselves for existential despair, smoky backrooms, and enough high-stakes wagers to make you sweat through your earbuds. Meanwhile, Jake's been grappling with Sam Peckinpah's magnum opus of chaos, "Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia." Warren Oates stars as Bennie, a hapless pianist dragged into a grotesque quest for a severed head and a hefty payday. Expect sun-baked highways and more moral ambiguity than a Tijuana back alley. Did Jake find solace in Caan's self-destructive symphony? Did Brad endure the psychedelic fever dream that is "Alfredo Garcia?" And will anyone emerge from this episode with their sanity intact? Tune in, but remember that when it comes to 1974, the only guarantee is that things are gonna get messy. So grab your whiskey, your existential dread, and your metaphorical shovels, because we're about to dig up some classic cinema dirt. Other movies discussed in this episode: Onionhead (1958), Ride a Crooked Trail (1958), Bonnie and Clyde (1967), The Wild Bunch (1969), Midnight Cowboy (1969), Duel (1971), Straw Dogs (1972), Badlands (1973), Charley Varrick (1973), The Taking of Pelham 123 (1974), Murder on the Orient Express (1974), The Man With the Golden Gun (1974), Young Frankenstein (1974), Chinatown (1974), Blazing Saddles (1974), The Year Without Santa Claus (1974), The Front Page (1974), The Conversation (1974), Italianamerican (1974), Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974), Lenny (1974), Going in Style (1979), Thelma & Louise (1991), Last Action Hero (1993), The Straight Story (1999), The Road (2009), Django Unchained (2012), The Gambler (2014), Win It All (2017), Uncut Gems (2019), Self Reliance (2023). In the latest episode of "Loki" Season 2, Episode 5, titled "Science/Fiction," written by Eric Martin and directed by Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead, the time-bending adventure continues as Loki finds himself alone at the TVA, raising questions about the whereabouts of his friends. The narrative takes us on a journey through various branched timelines, starting with San Francisco in 1962, where we encounter Frank, an escaped convict from Alcatraz. This historical reference ties into the real-life escape of Frank Anglin and the Anglin brothers from the infamous prison. The narrative then shifts to New York in 2012, introducing Dr. Willis (B-15), who is a pediatrician, and Cleveland in 2022, where Don, formerly known as Mobius, has become a jet ski salesperson. Loki promises Don that he can reunite him with his sons, raising the stakes of their mission. In Pasadena in 1994, we meet Doug, known as O.B., a science fiction writer whose office resembles his timeline office, introducing the intriguing concept of "The Zartan Contingent."As the episode unfolds, Loki grapples with controlling his time-slipping abilities, finding himself in the timelines of the people he seeks. The division between science and fiction becomes a central theme, with science representing "what" and "how" while fiction embodies the "why." Loki realizes that understanding the "why" is crucial to saving the TVA from an impending threat. This mission is underlined by the concept of "Aura," a distinctive quality of character, and the need to reunite the group. The narrative delves into Sylvie's timeline, which is eroding, and explores the emotional connection between her and Loki. The song "Love Don't Live Here Anymore" by Rose Royce sets the tone for their reunion and the resurgence of dying branched timelines.Loki gains the ability to control time-slipping and discovers that the key isn't just about where, when, or why, but rather about "who." He travels back in time to the TVA before the loom explosion, offering a fresh opportunity to save himself and his friends.OUR SOCIALS:We are featured on STARWARS.com! This week we're sharing one of Anna's favorite episodes. It's from 2014, when actor Ellen Burstyn invited us into her New York apartment for a sprawling interview. She told Anna about getting on a Greyhound bus to Dallas at 18 with 50 cents in her pocket, and about surviving an illegal abortion. And she described adopting her son, leaving an abusive marriage, and starring as a newly single mom in Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore. The role was based in part on her own life, and it won her an Oscar. "I really think of myself as a work in progress," Ellen Burstyn, then 81 years old, told Anna as they sat in wicker furniture in her Manhattan bedroom, "But I don't feel I'm necessarily a successful person." In next week's episode, you'll hear a new conversation between Anna and Ellen, recorded just a few weeks ago. But until then, you can also listen back to Ellen's conversation with journalist and feminist icon Gloria Steinem on our show from 2016 here.
This week, summer vacations and child illness strikes again, leaving the War Room just for Katey and Da7e this week. Then, Katey wasn’t here last […]

In January 2022, The War On Drugs kicked off a world tour in support of their latest album, I Don't Live Here Anymore. At a time when there weren't a lot of bands on the road as pandemic restrictions eased, TWOD packed multiple road cases with PPE and Covid tests, and headed to Austin TX to begin a six week tour of the US. After the 4th show, singer/guitarist Adam Granduciel tested positive for Covid, shows were cancelled, and the band and crew found themselves quarantined in North Little Rock AR, uncertain of the tour's fate. However, with Adam back to full health, the tour resumed, and in spite of additional sicknesses and some very unforgiving winter weather, the band completed the first leg of the tour in Phoenix AZ 28 shows later.Host: Dominic EastGuests: Adam Granduciel, Dave Hartley, Robbie Bennett, Charlie Hall, Anthony LaMarca, Jon Natchez, Eliza Hardy-Jones, Craig McQuiston.Cameos: Josh Goldsmith, Jimmy Russo

This past year marked the 75th Anniversary of the Actors Studio, the nonprofit organization that has shared “truth in acting” with decades of film, television and theater professionals, including some of the biggest names in the business. This episode is the first in a series of conversations with some of those responsible for the studio's success. Alec currently serves as Co-President of the Actors Studio and had the opportunity to speak with two leaders within the institution: Co-President Ellen Burstyn, who joined the studio in 1967, is known for her roles in “Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore,”“The Exorcist,” and “Requiem for A Dream” – and also has the distinction of winning the “Triple Crown of Acting:” an Oscar, a Tony and two Emmy Awards. Alec then speaks with Co-Associate Artistic Director Estelle Parsons, who has been with the studio since 1962. Parsons earned an Academy Award for ”Bonnie and Clyde,” the second film she ever made, and has earned five Tony nominations and two Obies in her illustrious career. The two remarkable women share their stories of finding their way to the Actors Studio and the impact it had on their careers – and their craft. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
