A rather rambly podcast where Rich Newnham and Henry Salmon chat about albums that have influenced our music tastes over the years. Sometimes we're joined by friends. Since most platforms won't accept music clips even under fair use, we provide a playlist for each episode - check the podcast descriptions for the links. You can chat to us on Twitter and Facebook - we are @IMightBeWrongUK. Thanks to T-Toe for providing the intro for this pod, please go check out his work!
Back once again, and with a big band that most of you lot will already know, it's Elbow. Rich picks Leaders Of The Free World for sentimental reasons, but we do agree they might have one or two better albums - it's still a superb record! To listen to the music we discuss, go check out the playlist on Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2rIMZuWht6pdJNluH4qJL0Drop us a line at: @imightbewronguk on Twitter and Facebook. Thanks to T-Toe for the intro music! This month we're digging out a band who were big during the Britpop era but who your hosts agree probably don't quite fall into that style and sound - it's Supergrass! Henry picks their debut album "I Should Coco" because of prawns and world travel. It'll make sense once he explains it, we promise... To listen to the music we discuss, go check out the playlist on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7DGps8axNuvqCfOEpQJAWV Check out the videos for Alright and Pumpin On Your Stereo here if you haven't seen them, they were classics back in the day: Alright Pumpin On Your Stereo Drop us a line at: @imightbewronguk on Twitter and Facebook. Finally we are back! Sorry for the radio silence in 2024, but life got busy for your hosts... Anyway, we go big with The Beatles, so hopefully it was worth the wait. Henry mentions a documentary/interview thing with Jimmy Page, The Edge and Jack White, which you can find here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lQxxEQceYc To listen to the music we discuss, go check out the playlist on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0JiUyxne9bHlKSV2VpHv8B Drop us a line at: @imightbewronguk on Twitter and Facebook. We promised we'd go big and so we have! Henry can't make it this week so Rich gets to really get into it with one of his long time London gig and festival buddies, Neil Vincent, on a band they both absolutely love - Pixies! In case you don't know their stuff (you do, even if you don't know you do), they count the likes of Nirvana, Radiohead and David Bowie among their fans, so you know they're pretty great. It is alleged that their music is the only subject that God, Satan and Santa agree on. Anyway, go have a listen! We are giving you more recommendations because who doesn't love trying a new album? It might be the next one you absolutely love, and we think both of these could be that for you - Henry recommends indie rock in the form of Bully and Rich goes for something that's more shoegaze-ish with Cloth. Please go listen to them and support their music here if you love it: Bully: https://bullythemusic.bandcamp.com/ Cloth: https://cloth-music.bandcamp.com And the playlist with all our 2023 recommendations: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6aVggGvATB9sbFVfesOAjS
This week we dive into the atmospheric and rather unique sound of The xx. This is a band who understand space and the use of silence to create, rather than going full bore with a wall of sound. It's a Hidden Track! We're going to try and bring you more of these sprinkled in among the main episodes in order to keep things in a nice rhythm for Henry and Rich. This week we bring you recommendations for BC Camplight and Caroline Polachek, and also a few quick ones for new releases for artists we know and love already. BC Camplight: https://bc-camplight.bandcamp.com Caroline Polachek: https://carolinepolachek.bandcamp.com/ And a few tracks from each here: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6aVggGvATB9sbFVfesOAjS

Henry picks a band who were pretty huge in the States in the 90s, but barely troubled the charts in the UK - Everclear. He explains why he loves "So Much For The Afterglow" and takes us through the extraordinary story of their front man. Back to the Britpop era for a band who Rich doesn't really think quite fits the usual Britpop mould - it's Ocean Colour Scene and their breakthrough album, "Moseley Shoals". We recorded this one back in Feb and Rich only just dug it out to edit it, so apologies that you might have missed out on months of listening to these wonderful records! We have new music with Curse Of Lono - a British band seeped in Americana, West Coast rock and country, and Elbow, who you already know but might have missed that they have a new release: Curse Of Lono: https://curseoflono.bandcamp.com/releases Elbow: https://elbow.co.uk/ Go have a listen to the tracks we selected here: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7l055JLlOnt1mNT48q4NFp
This week Henry picks First Aid Kit, who we both have a soft spot for. We get into discussions about their musical family, harmonies and impressing rock royalty. We're back! Thanks for sticking with us while Henry recovered from Covid and Rich got a job (he still has a job, it's been a whole month!). It's Henry's choice and he's leaning into some pop vibes with Lorde's "Pure Heroine". Apologies for the slightly dodgy audio, something was up with Henry's mic but we'll try and get that sorted for next time! We aren't quite ready to start releasing full episodes again because Rich is getting to grips with a new job and Henry is still recovering from a bout of Covid, but we've got some new music that we chatted about recently (we promise we'll be back with some proper episodes soon!). Fortitude Valley are a British-based, Aussie-fronted slice of sunny indie-pop, and they will cheer up your day, and Noel Gallagher needs no introduction but you really should check out his latest work... A band both your hosts agree on this week - Rich and Henry discuss My Vitriol's debut "Finelines", their rapid rise and their struggles with following up that album. New music! Henry brings something brand new with psych/punk/pop from Taraka's "Welcome To Paradise Lost" and Rich brings a new album of ambient loveliness from electronica legends St Etienne - "I've Been Trying To Tell You". This week Henry picks a cult album that either needs no introduction, or will have you saying "WHO?!". Neutral Milk Hotel are a band who had a huge influence on some massive bands who followed them, but "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea" still sparks controversy, with many lauding it as one of the most important ever made and others suggesting that Mangum and the band's subsequent vanishing act created a mythology that has raised it far above the station it deserves. Your hosts split neatly into each of those camps, so let the argument begin! This week both your hosts go for something new that sounds like something old. Henry picks jangly guitar indie that sounds like Parquet Courts, Ramones and maybe a bit of Pavement - it's Kiwi jr's "Cooler Returns". Rich has since also got somewhat addicted to their sound! For this Hidden Track he picks Nation Of Language, who are exploring 80s synth in the style of Joy Division/New Order, Depeche Mode and of course Kraftwerk. Rich dives back into his electronica this week and picks Mylo's debut "Destroy Rock & Roll". We discuss remote Scottish islands, 70s and 80s soft rock and ambiguous legal battles that may or may not include the classic Contractual Obligation Album. This week Rich raves about punk/electronica/indie-dance (we don't know, but if you like Bloc Party you'll like them) up and comers Folly Group and their debut EP "Awake And Hungry". Henry reaches back into an artist he's mentioned in the past who has a new release - it's singer/actress/talented human Kate Nash and her 2021 pandemic single "Horsie", which is a lovely folksy slice of Americana. This week we get dragged into an old friend's university dorm room and played some loud shouty punk. We thought we'd sneak out a Hidden Track for you lot since it's that weird Twilight Zone bit of the year and you've got nothing else to fill the void. This week Rich picks a podcast favourite - The Hives' "Your New Favourite Band". And to celebrate the tongue in cheek punk rock Swedes, we've got an episode that's longer than all but one of their albums! The videos we chatted about are here: Hate To Say I Told You So - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uz1Jwyxd4tE Agent Provocateur Kylie Minogue Ad - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s3XW_NOYrTY To listen to the music we discuss, go check out the playlist in Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1lymxHV7yNtzwusOlMgNIU Drop us a line at: @imightbewronguk on Twitter and Facebook. Henry selects a brilliant Australian band this week, and rather than an album he has picked their "Dark Storm" EP. A band both your hosts love, but one that didn't quite hit the mainstream in the UK in the way we thought they might - they discuss what happened and whether there might be a comeback in the offing... The Red Bull video we chatted about is here ("Way Back Home"): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cj6ho1-G6tw To listen to the music we discuss, go check out the playlist in Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1lymxHV7yNtzwusOlMgNIU Drop us a line at: @imightbewronguk on Twitter and Facebook. This week we talk about comfortably the most contemporary album that we've covered so far, with last year's release by Field Music: "Making A New World". Rich tries to convince Henry that he needs to actually sit down and properly listen to it rather than having it on in the background, Henry highlights a legend of the Bristol music scene and neither of your hosts can remember the name of Snow Patrol's "Final Straw". The video we chatted about is here ("No Pressure"): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FCHjsGeNWNY To listen to the music we discuss, go check out the playlist in Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7diXoNSwSxl7LqoxfFFsrG Drop us a line at: @imightbewronguk on Twitter and Facebook. This week it's Henry's choice, so he's selected an album that was highly critically acclaimed but didn't get as much mainstream love - it's Animal Collective's "Merriweather Post Pavilion". It's New Music Friday, which means we have a Hidden Track for you lovely lot. This week Rich picks up a new album from a current favourite - Field Music's "Flat White Moon", and Henry selects political psych-pop with the excellent She Drew The Gun's "Behave Myself". Well hello there! As promised we are back after a bit of a summer break, and we've got a huge, massive album to get back on it with - one of the defining albums of an era, Nirvana's "Nevermind". There's so much to talk about with Nirvana, so of course we cover sharing headphones in a playground, Dave Grohl's childhood summer road trips and miming on Top Of The Pops. We found a hidden track that was recorded before our hiatus and never released, so to warm you all up prior to our imminent return we thought we'd release it now! Henry brings a brand new subgenre (at least to us) with A. G. Cook's hyperpop and Rich returns to an old friend with John Grant's beautiful new album. We have a guest again! Pat Jackson returns and brings his knowledge of a band that Henry and Rich both love but don't know as much about as they should - The Cranberries. We focus on "To The Faithful Departed", but meander into other albums, O'Riordan's tragic demise and (somehow) Mad Max. This week we have an album that's technically Rich's choice but really it could have been either of your hosts that picked this one. One of the most underrated albums of the 90s, it's Mercury Rev's "Deserter's Songs". Find out exactly how they made Rich rather furious. We keep it short and sweet this week with one of Henry's favourites, for which he returns to his bucket of wonderful Canadian bands. Yes, it's The Weakerthans and "Reunion Tour". Rich sold a couple of giant beanbags in the middle of recording this episode but we cut that out as it didn't make for great listening. This week Rich picks a band that he introduced Henry to, and then Henry re-introduced him to - Danish rockers "Mew". We focus on their debut record "Frengers", which leads to some chat about the risks involved in taking someone to see a gig if they don't know the band you're about to see... This week Henry selects "Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots" by indie pysch-rock giants The Flaming Lips, which leads us to discuss celebrities hidden on-stages, Keith Flint being furious in a giant plastic bubble and Rich's dislike of Wayne Coyne's attempt to rhyme "karate" and "body". Does Bob Dylan need any introduction? Probably not! We get into some controversial recording sessions, Rich explains why he's picked "Blood On The Tracks" rather than something from Dylan's first peak in the 60s, and Henry sadly walks away while Bob plays live at Glastonbury 1998. Yes, it's Enya and yes, it's her 2015 album "Dark Sky Island". This week it's Rich's pick and he's gone for a band who weren't necessarily the most fashionable of the 00s British indie scene. But Maximo Park have a certain style, an ability to create an energy that has meant he's continued to go back to "A Certain Trigger" time and time again. New music! It's Friday and we've a couple of gorgeous albums that have been released in the last few weeks. Henry picks Lord Huron's "Long Lost" - American folk/alt rock - and Rich selects St Vincent's "Daddy's Home" - mixing 70s classic and psych-rock in with her usual style. Friday is upon us and we're in the mood to share some new music. Rich thinks more people (yes, that includes you!) should be listening to Du Blonde - the new album is full of brilliant modern garage rock; and Henry is rather obsessed with the new Wolf Alice album, which is leading the charge for his album of the year with it's broad range of rock from straight up punk to acoustic folk sounds. This week Rich picks a band who, despite being rather quirky and sonically a far distance from the mainstream, ascended rapidly to global fame, picking up a Mercury Music Prize and an Ivor Novello award on the way. It is of course Alt-J with their debut "An Awesome Wave". So of course we end up chatting about war photography and what makes for a good cover of a famous song. Yes, Rich wanted to refer to them as "∆", no we weren't going to let him. This week we welcome back friend of the podcast Tempest Rose of the House of Burlesque (and Ginsult) to chat about the hugely popular and hugely controversial scourge of conservative America, the utterly furious Eminem. We dive into "The Marshall Mathers LP" and discuss the reception the album got, the immense talent on display and how we feel about the content now, more than 2 decades on from its release.
