Notch Brewing's (https://www.notchbrewing.com) Chris Lohring loves that more craft brewers are embracing lager, but he has some strong opinions about the best way to brew lager beer. “Crispy boys don't exist, lagers aren't dry,” he says. “Clean lager yeast is boring to me.” Refinement and distinction are his goals, not minimalism, and he uses all the tools in the brewer's toolbox to achieve them, adjusting mash schedules and malt bills to build body in low-ABV beers, moving lager mid-fermentation from quasi-open fermenters to conical fermenters before later moving to horizontal lagering tanks, reducing and timing decoction to fit the goals of individual beers, and considering the impact of mash rests on fermentability, among many other things. It's not one thing, after all, that makes a lager distinct—in his worlds, “there's no magic bullet.” In this episode, Lohring discusses: Why Czech pale lager is a category not a style How variable processes in the cellar lead to different expressions of diacetyl Manipulating a mash schedule to build body and character with more expressive lager yeasts What decoction does and doesn't do for lagers Using small percentages of crystal male in Czech pale lager Fermenting with no head pressure and skimming to optimize flavor and hop character The difference in cerné pivo and tmavy pivo Using American hops in Czech-style lager And more. Jake took it up to Massachusetts, too, and Notch Brewing in Salem was this weekend's selection. Good Beer Hunting

Good Beer Hunting

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 19, 2022 57:00

Brienne Allan became a household name in the beer industry last year, when she inadvertently sparked a reckoning against sexism in beer that quickly went global. Her face and words were featured everywhere from Imbibe to the Boston Globe, Eater, right here at Good Beer Hunting, and her Brave Noise initiative with Ash Eliot was named Brewbound's Cause of the Year for 2021. But now that nearly a year has gone by, what's changed? For starters, Brienne left her home at Notch Brewing in Salem, Massachusetts, something she'd never envisioned doing until she became a worldwide phenomenon. Part of that decision was due to the sudden, and often scary, visibility she had to confront as a public face of social justice and change, which forced her to quickly figure out who she could talk to and who to trust. But even in the darkest times, she describes pockets of joy and hope that shifted her perspective about craft beer, but ultimately kept her within its space in order to keep driving positive change. Today, Brienne and I talk about the past year—what she's learned, how she's changed, what she wants people to know, and what she's looking forward to. Later in the conversation, we're joined by her fiancé and partner Michael Fava, who shares his reaction to the reckoning as well as some of their future plans as business owners. You'll hear an exclusive announcement about that business (yes, it involves Lagers), and why we shouldn't expect the name Brienne Allan to go away anytime soon. We finish with a conversation about the current reconciliation plans for Mikkeller, which she calls a “huge breakthrough” as the first-of-its-kind effort to acknowledge, apologize, and atone for past sins. The dust hasn't settled yet, but with the help of people like Kate Bailey, Fanny Wandel, Ash Eliot, and more, Brienne's path forward is becoming slightly more clear.

“I wanted to create this platform and group where women can come together in safe spaces and they can network, they can find job opportunities, and just have an open dialogue,” says Ash Eliot, founder of Women of the Bevolution. With 3 years of experience in the beer industry (plus over a decade in the music industry) and a passion for promoting equal opportunity, Ash is no stranger to advocating for so-called “problem performers.” After working in the beer and alcohol world for a few years, Ash encountered some glaring issues with equal opportunity in the industry. Considering that many of the companies in question are run primarily by men, Ash decided to take matters into her own hands. She founded Women of the Bevolution, a hub for women in the beer industry looking for guidance and resources for fair treatment. After Brienne Allan, a brewer formerly of Notch Brewing, shared stories about women's mistreatment in the beer industry via her Instagram @RatMagnet, Ash teamed up with Brienne to launch Brave Noise, a global beer collaboration working to create a safe and discrimination-free beer industry. Tune into this week's episode of Problem Performers as Ash Eliot and host Rebecca Weaver dive deep into how women and people of color are marginalized and targeted when working in the beer industry. Learn more about why open dialogue is crucial for all brewery professionals, how an angel shot can save your life, and why it is crucial for consumers to understand a brewery's code of conduct before becoming a customer.   Quotes • “I wanted to kind of create this platform and group where women can come together in safe spaces and they can network, they can find job opportunities, and just have an open dialogue.” (03:39-03:50)  • "It's a lot of white males who started these businesses. They were homebrewing. They were like, ‘I'm just gonna start a business.' But they don't know how to manage people, how to create a safe environment for women, how to support them, and have these resources and have, you know, code of conduct and an HR.” (10:19-10:38)  • “Women drink beer, women brew beer.  I mean, women do everything.” (13:30-13:38)  • “Consumers need to know what they're investing their money and time into. And hopefully it is into breweries that want to change and change this industry with us.” (16:52-16:59)  • “Women that are going into these workplaces to interview for jobs...you have a right to ask how this environment is. What is your code of conduct? Behind the scenes, is it inclusive? Are there other women working here? What is your HR policy in terms of reporting situations? These are all normal questions. We need to make this normal. It should be normal." (25:06-25:40)  • “In terms of the future, I'm really optimistic and hopeful that women will leave these toxic places if they're not getting the support they need and collab with other women, start their own business, find male allies, who are supportive. Eventually I want to be part of that. I want to support them.” (39:15-39:42)    Links Find Ash on Instagram @womenofthebevolution and at https://womenofthebevolution.com  Check out Brave Noise at https://www.bravenoisebeer.com  and read up at https://www.forbes.com/sites/taranurin/2021/07/14/ratmagnets-new-collaboration-brew-aims-to-make-the-beer-industrys-metoo-moment-last/   Need support for a harassment situation as a customer or employee? Joe Manchin decides to sink hopes of passing voting protections laid out in the For the People Act, taking out an editorial in West Virginia newspapers to spew nonsense about bipartisanship. His move happens, of course, while Republican state legislatures are passing voter suppression laws at a breakneck pace.  A similar fate awaits Biden's infrastructure plan as Manchin and Sinema refuse to get rid of the filibuster. Talks between Biden and West Virginia's Republican Senator Shelley Moore Capito fell apart after it was clear the Republican position “did not meet the essential needs of our country to restore our roads and bridges, prepare us for our clean energy future, and create jobs,” according to a statement from White House press secretary Jen Psaki. A new bipartisan proposal from a group of 10 senators led by Krysten Sinema and Mitt Romney was developed late yesterday, but sounds like it will gut all investment in climate infrastructure. Senator Markey and other Democratic Senators have said they will not vote for a bill that does not invest in necessary climate infrastructure.  Turns out Trump's justice department was secretly subpoenaing phone and other records from Democrats on House Intelligence committee. The practice continued under Biden's administration until just a couple of weeks ago.  The Keystone XL pipeline is dead.  PA Republicans propose major changes in the Commonwealth's election law, calling for stricter voter ID rules and restrictions on early voting.  PA Republicans spent a good part of the week with attacks on women's rights, passing more restrictive anti-abortion laws.  The PA Senate also gleefully  passed a bill that prohibits PA health secretary from “mandating stay-at-home orders, imposing masking and social distancing guidelines, and ordering business closures.” The PA legislature also voted to end Gov. Tom Wolf's pandemic disaster declaration this week. Republican Senate Majority Leader Kim Ward joyfully proclaimed: “for all practical purposes, the state of emergency in our Commonwealth is over.” PASSHE hearings were held this week and Chancellor Daniel Greenstein spent much of the hearing happy texting on his phone. However, as Bill Schackner reported, with over 100 individuals calling in with comments, only ONE person endorsed plans for consolidation.  Jeff Bezos announces that he is going to space with his brother for Blue Origin's first crewed suborbital mission. Bezos announced his intentions in an Instagram video in which he said, “You see the earth from space and it changes you. It changes your relationship with this planet, with humanity. It's one Earth. I want to go on this flight because it's the thing I've wanted to do all my life. It's an adventure. It's a big deal for me.” Ah yes, that warm fuzzy feeling you get when the richest person on the planet gets to live out his boyhood dreams, built on the back of massive exploitation of Amazon's workers.  NASA says that Russia may pull out of the International Space Station. Russia has been a key international partner on the ISS since the beginning. NASA's Chief administrator, Bill Nelson, is concerned that Russia may be looking to work more closely with China now that China has begun to build its own space station and has big lunar ambitions.  Notch Brewing: Brave Noise - Pale Ale, brewed to show solidarity for all those that have suffered discriminatory behavior in the workplace, now available at our Salem Tap Room & Biergarten in 16oz 4-packs and on draft. Local Writer Beth Demmon Speaks About Reporting On Sexism in the Craft Beer Industry

Welcome back to Happy Half Hour! This week's special guest is Beth Demmon, a freelance writer and journalist who specializes in craft beer. Beth started writing about craft beer in 2015 and has been an advocate for diversity in the industry: She founded the Diverse Beer Writers Initiative and is a member of the North American Guild of Beer Writers. Recently, she published an article on Vine Pair about allegations of rampant sexism and harassment that have been occuring in the beer industry, and the story got national attention. The allegations were brought to light by Brienne Allan, a brewer in Massachusetts. Allan posted a question on her Instagram, asking other women who work in craft beer about sexist comments they’d gotten while on the job. The responses were harrowing—and quickly encompassed not just words, but sexual harrassment and assault as well. In her post, Allan says she was asked about her credentials while she was on site helping build Notch Brewing’s new location. Beth says comments like these are microaggressions, which are “death by a thousand cuts” that exact a toll on the recipient. She says that microaggressions against women in the craft beer industry are not only too common, but the lack of accountability and consequences for perpetrators has led to the normalization of this behavior. Beth says that the sheer volume of responses from women experiencing sexism in the craft beer industry wasn’t surprising, but the number of women willing to attach a name to their response has never been seen before. With all these allegations surfacing, the industry has been forced to take action. Some breweries are implementing third-party reporting systems. For smaller breweries that don’t have human resources departments, Beth says that even working to develop a code of conduct is better than nothing—it’s a way for a company to put their values first. She also discussed the challenges of reporting on this topic. In a report like this, one might expect the number of false allegations to be anywhere from 2 to 10 percent—but more likely from 2 to 3 percent. Beth says that even if 3 percent of the reports turn out to be false, that still leaves thousands of others that cannot be ignored, and it’s clear that something needs to change, especially in San Diego, a city that historically avoids confrontation when it comes to issues like this. In Hot Plates, Sky Deck food hall is opening on the second level of Del Mar Highlands Town Center on June 11 with 13 different restaurants and food concepts, each with their own seating area. Jay Birds, a hot chicken restaurant from Long Beach, is opening in Carlsbad. Ben and Esther’s Vegetarian Jewish Deli is expanding from Portland to the Rolando/College area. Also, voting for San Diego Magazine’s Best Restaurants 2021 has begun! Cast your vote for your favorites, then see the final list of the critic’s and readers’ picks in the September issue. In Two People for Takeout / Two People for $50, Beth’s pick is Angkorian Pikestaff in East Village for their Asian fusion and Cambodian dishes. For hot, made-to-order donuts, Troy recommends Broad Street Dough Co. in Encinitas, specifically the blueberry glazed donuts. Marie’s pick is the pasta that gets prepared in a 60-pound wheel of Parmigiano-Reggiano at Bencotto Italian Kitchen in Little Italy. Noah's pick is Point Loma Fish Shop for their Thursday night oyster special and fish and chips. Kairoa Brewing is David’s pick, for their salmon sashimi topped with crunchy quinoa. We were felt truly honored to have the opportunity to sit down this week with the head brewer of Notch, Brienne Allan. If you don't know Brienne's name by now (or, at the very least her Instagram handle @Ratmaget), then it's probably time to find a different cell provider. She walks us through the unintended series of events that, in a matter of days, led to an absolute tsunami of shared experiences of sexism from women working in all corners of  beer, brought the topic to the forefront of conversation of the entire brewing industry, and inadvertently bestowed her with an immense amount of assumed responsibility. Brienne's perspective on sexism in beer -- and more so, everything that had BEEN happening for far too long -- is as eye-opening and honest as it challenging and inspiring, and it would be a disservice to write more about that side of conversation when its depth is simply best heard. With that said, Brienne is a brewer before anything else, and fittingly, we find the time to talk nearly as much about lagers (Notch's expertise here has been beyond established on the podcast) as we do equality. Beer, life, and conversation are each dictated by balance, after all. Please enjoy our extremely raw conversation with one of the best brewers in the country, who just HAPPENS to be looked at as the de facto voice for eliminating misogyny. More pressure to end the filibuster as Republican Senators refuse to back the Jan 6 commission. More momentum for Biden’s Build Back Better infrastructure proposal. A new polls shows that a majority of Pennsylvanians support the proposal, by the way.  It was a trifecta for the climate on Wednesday. A Dutch court ordered Royal Dutch Shell to cut its global carbon emissions by 45% by the end of 2030 in a case brought by Friends of the Earth.  Shareholder activists pushed out two of Exxon’s hand-picked board members and elected members who “pledged to steer the company toward cleaner energy and away from oil and gas.” And, shareholders at Chevron voted 61% to cut its emissions. Another proposal that would have required the company to prepare a report on the impact its business would have from the net zero 2050 scenario, lost with 48% of the vote.  ConocoPhillips has a unique solution to the melting of Alaskan permafrost on Alaska’s North Slope - refreeze the permafrost so you can drill.  A UK-based blimp company is looking to deploy hybrid airships for shorter trips between places like Liverpool and Belfast or Barcelona to the Balearic Islands. The company, Hybrid Air Vehicles, says replacing air and ship traffic with its airships could cut emissions by 90%. Half of all U.S. adults are now fully vaccinated, according to the CDC. New book finally exposes Bernie Sanders as a sham! Yes, you will not believe what this foot soldier of the ruling elite demand! When he’s on the road he demands hotel rooms with...wait for it...a KING BED and temperatures as low as 64 degrees! The hypocrite! Ladies and Gents (long pause) we got him.  Sedition Hunters, online sleuths, angry partisans and supporters of the ruling elite unearthed video footage that showed State Senator Doug Mastriano breaching police barricades & walking towards the capitol steps minutes before the building was breached on January 6th.  This latest round of reporting completely undermines the stories and statements Mastriano gave to reporters and Senate leadership in the days following the insurrection.  If that’s not bad enough, Senator Mastirano issued a statement attacking the Huffington Post for reporting on this story and reporting on the fact that he posed for pictures with Sam Lazar, an insurrectionist wanted by the FBI for using bear spray on police officers.  Mastriano compared the photos to Obama taking pictures with Bill Ayers or Louis Farrakhan. Mastriano’s statements prompted reporters to dig more into his connections with Lazar and showed that he has posed for photos with Lazar at least 5 times over the past year. Keeping up with the insurrection, Sandy Weyer, another Mastriano associate who is known as “Sedition Sandy,” was named in an FBI affidavit for entering the capitol on January 6th.   Talking about Senator Mastriano.  The Arizona Mirror, a sibling outlet related to the Pennsylvania Capital Star, reported that Senator Mastriano ordered an unauthorized audit of the 2020 election in Fulton County.  The company that conducted the audit is associated with Sydney Powell and the Stop the Steal Movement.  On top of that, they spoiled over $20,000 worth of election equipment that couldn’t be used in the previous primary.  Reps. Russ Diamond and Barabar Gleim began seeking co-sponsors for legislation that would penalize any school that teaches “critical race theory.”  Another Bucks County, PA man, Leonard Ridge, was arrested for allegedly taking part in the Jan 6 insurrection. Ridge bragged about his involvement on Snapchat. The battle of the billionaire space barons is heating up and the Senate prepares a $10 billion dollar bailout for Jeff Bezos’s “Blue Origin” after his fufus were hurt after he lost the bid to SpaceX for the moon lander.  The European Space Agency is looking to develop a GPS and communication network around the Moon to aid in Earth-to-Moon communications for future missions.  The chickens are coming home to roost in the craft beer industry. Brienne Allan, a production manager at Notch Brewing in Salem, MA asked an open-ended question on her Instagram account: Is anyone else experiencing sexist comments? As reported on Boston’s WBUR, “The answer was this cascade of experiences, flooding her private messages with a deluge of trauma. …’It escalated really quickly into people talking about sexual violence and sexual harassment, racism from owners and superiors and just how, the HR system in general is just failing people right now,’ Allan said. ‘It just escalated out of control. I have over a thousand stories up now’." The reckoning is ONLY BEGINNING.

As mentioned briefly last week, Brienne Allen of Notch Brewing has been sharing stories of women in the beer industry. So far hundreds of women have come forward with stories of abuse, harassment, and worse by men in and around the brewing industry.  Among the news and the announcement was a statement from Laura Dierks the founder of Interboro Spirits & Ales in Brooklyn, New York. In a signed note she said the  brewery was postponing their upcoming Pils City festival because two breweries that have come under fire had been invited to participate.  “We cannot stand aside when some colleagues are physically or emotionally unsafe, feel unsafe or not respected for their intellectual contributions in our community, regardless of who they are externally," she wrote.  Dierks and Jesse Furguson founded the brewery in 2016, and have turned into one of the most respected and inventive breweries in New York. Known for their beers, the company’s spirits program is also known for great recipes as well, including a canned gin and tonic cocktail. A whisky will soon be released.  Dierks has been speaking out on social media about the treatment of women in the industry. This is a difficult subject that can’t be ignored and she offers up her own experiences and how the brewery is looking to be a leader in the space going forward.  She spoke to the show via Zoom from Brooklyn. This Episode is sponsored by:NZ HopsHarvest has officially ended in New Zealand and there are exciting hops to choose from, including Nelson Sauvin, Motueka, Riwaka, and the newest hop in the lineup, Nectaron®. Earlier in May, Brienne Allan set off what some are calling the craft beer industry’s “Me Too” reckoning.  The production manager at Notch Brewing in Salem, Massachusetts started sharing hundreds of stories of misogyny, sexual assault and workplace discrimination from women in the beer world on her Instagram.  This led to the firing of a staff member at the San Diego brewery Modern Times, whose CEO also stepped down amid allegations of mishandling complaints and creating a toxic work environment.  Though the current world of craft beer is male-dominated, for hundreds of years beer brewing was a woman’s task, and there’s even some thinking that iconography associated with witches - brooms, cats and pointy hats - may have originated from alewives.  We gather a roundtable of SoCal women in craft beer to respond to this moment in the industry and also discuss their own experiences, as well as the history of women in brewing.  Guests:  Alexandra Nowell, co-founder and director of brewing operations at Three Weavers Brewing Company in Inglewood  Ting Su, co-founder of Eagle Rock Brewery, where she also founded a women’s beer forum Laurie Gutierrez, vice president of SoCal Cerveceros, a latino-based homebrew club, where she heads up an all women brew crew; part time event representative for Sierra Nevada Brewing Company; co-host of The Brew'd Up Podcast, which focuses on homebrewing and craft beer Frances Michelle Cannon, executive director of the L.A. This week Beer Sessions is all about the Czech side pour. Jimmy welcomes Chris Lohring of Notch Brewing in Salem, MA; Todd DiMatteo of Good Word Brewing in Duluth, GA; and Ben Middlemiss of Ben Middlemiss Brewing in New Zealand. Chris and Todd talk about when they got their side-pull faucets installed as well as the learning curve that comes with using one. Chris has his staff do quarterly competitions to see how well (and how fast) they can pour a lager and both brewers give a big shout out to Pilsner Urquell’s training videos. The group talks about the benefits of a side-pull for carbonation, mouthfeel and more, plus they dive deep into techniques like spunding and triple decoction. Image courtesy of John Andrews.Heritage Radio Network is a listener supported nonprofit podcast network. This week on Beer Sessions Radio, Jimmy welcomes Tom Acitelli who authored the new book Pilsner: How the Beer of Kings Changed the World along with Chris Lohring of Notch Brewing and Matt Levy from Threes Brewing. Tom began his latest book project in a search to understand what laid the groundwork for the craft beer movement and argues we wouldn’t have the beer marketplace we do now without pilsner. He talks about the history of style and how it evolved along with innovations in roasting, while the brewers offer their perspective on the technical demands of making pilsner (especially with the space limitations of NYC). Matt discusses the evolution of the lager program at Threes, including recent beers they are aging in oak, while Chris shares why he has chosen to stick with sessionable beers even while the industry leans towards high ABV IPAs. Beer List:Schilling Beer Company, Alexandr 10° Czech-Style PilsnerGreen Man Brewery, Licensed to Haze Double IPAImage courtesy of Saadia Sumrall.Heritage Radio Network is a listener supported nonprofit podcast network. Graining In is fresh off the heels of its most successful Week One episode to date, with Scott Janish! The Matty and Noah revel in the success, try to find valuable lessons from the recent the podcast's growth in listenership; instead, their predictably petty takeaways are merely fixations on self esteem issues and disbelief in the fact that Scott, a man who has dedicated his brewing career to pushing the scientific understanding of IPAs, isn't in love with lagers. Thankfully, the latter point proves to be a good topic of discussion and the guys don't quite board the technical train, but at least take a ride on the Brewing Science & Psychology Shuttle Bus. Noah and Matt discuss how lagers grew to become the definitive "brewer's beer", the importance of place in beer enjoyment, each share their favorite lager, and Noah rambles phonetic on his philosophy with lager yeast selection, why he never homebrewed lagers, the importance of decoction and alternative mash schedules, talks temperature, and gushes about spunding valves. The response to a very technical conversation with Scott was nothing short of eye opening, so hopefully this will be the first of many episodes that live more in that practical arena, while still appealing to brewers, drinkers, and just people in general on a more consistent basis. Living overseas can give you an interesting perspective on American beer culture. Although I’m originally from California, I’ve lived in the Czech Republic for almost 20 years now. While I miss many of the beers and breweries from back home, I really fell in love with Czech beer, dedicating a lot of my time to researching, writing about, and drinking it. In recent years I’ve been glad to see North American beer lovers develop much more interest in Czech beer. Since then, many U.S. and Canadian brewers have reached out to me with questions about recipes, equipment, and processes. I can tell that for a lot of people back home, Czech brewing is still rather weird and unknown, whether it’s the “black magic” of a triple-decoction mash, or the strange pours like the šnyt and mlíko, or our rarely spotted “yeast beer,” Kvasnicové Pivo. One of the standout U.S. brewers who actually gets Czech beer is Chris Lohring of Notch Brewing in Salem, Massachusetts. Chris came through Prague himself, in 2012, doing research on how Czech beers are brewed, served, and drunk. I met up with Chris during that trip, and so did my friend and colleague Max Bahnson, who writes under the name Pivní Filosof. Chris got to visit Czech breweries; drink Czech beers; and observe the Czech process, approach, and culture. Since then, Notch Brewing has emerged as one of the leading proponents of Czech-style beers in North America. Not only does Notch make a Czech-inspired Světlý Ležák, or Pale Lager (aka Pilsner), but it also makes Tmavé Pivo, or Dark Lager, and Polotmavé Pivo, which means “half-dark beer,” or Amber Lager. At the Notch taproom in Salem, those beers are served from a Czech side-pour (or side-pull) faucet, into a Czech dimpled, half-liter mug. My Czech friends who have visited the Notch taproom said it’s the closest thing to a Czech beer experience you can get in the U.S. In this episode, I catch up with Chris Lohring when on his return to Prague, along with Notch Brewing’s production manager, Brienne Allan. They were both on a trip that included several hands-on brew days at different Czech breweries. I wanted to ask Chris and Brienne about the differences between Czech beer culture and American beer culture, as well as the differences in Prague since Chris’ last visit seven-plus years ago. I wanted to find out what beer drinkers in the States understood about Czech beer, brewing, and how we drink, and I wanted to know if there were any common misconceptions. Our meeting takes place over a few beers in a busy Prague café around the corner from my apartment, so there’s a fair amount of background noise—sorry about that. It was recorded in mid-February, 2020, about three weeks before the coronavirus closed off the Czech Republic and made travel here impossible, at least for now. The observations about Czech brewing and beer drinking made by Chris and Brienne, however, feel pretty timeless. Here’s Chris Lohring and Brienne Allan of Notch Brewing in Salem. Listen in.

Ed Kennedy (D-Lowell) and Nick Collins (D-South Boston) are co-sponsoring a bill that would prevent any person or company from obtaining more than 14 one-day licenses a year. Beer companies such as Trillium and Wachusett, among others, have used those licenses to operate outdoor beer gardens from the spring into the fall.Currently, the law allows applicants to obtain up to 30 one-day licenses. However, beer companies have used a loophole that allows multiple applicants to request licenses on their behalf. Last year, the city issued 82 one-day licenses, up from 39 in 2017, the Globe reported.Speaking to the Globe, Massachusetts Restaurant Association president and CEO Bob Luz said the law is being abused to the detriment of his organization’s members. The states brewers have said they’re willing to work with lawmakers to evolve the law.Meanwhile, Notch Brewing founder Chris Lohring pointed out that the bill as written wouldn’t just hurt craft brewers, but would also affect nonprofits that rely on one-day licenses.Jim Koch Responds to #CorntroversyIt’s been nearly two weeks since Anheuser-Busch launched its Bud Light Super Bowl ads pointing out MillerCoors’ use of corn syrup in its flagship Miller Lite and Coors Light offerings and upsetting corn farmers. Interviewed Chet Brett (Brand Manager) from Tribes Brewing Co. in Mokena, IL - Chicago area– they are doing well and selling a lot of beer.Trailing Chicago are long-time beer meccas and other major population centers, including Denver (158), Seattle (153), San Diego (150), Los Angeles (146), New York (141), Portland, Oregon (139), and Philadelphia (113).The last time Watson charted the data — in 2013 — Seattle’s 87 breweries were the most in the nation. Chicago ranked fifth that year with 62 breweries, trailing Portland, Oregon (77), San Diego (76) and Denver (63).Rankings are fleeting, however, as more breweries open their doors and shutter. According to the BA, 7,000 breweries were in operation as of the end of October, with potentially as many as 1,000 openings in 2018. Meanwhile, Watson told Brewbound earlier this year that he anticipates as many as 300 brewery closures by the end of 2018, as the gap between openings and closings begins to converge.News courtesy of Brewbound (https://www.brewbound.com/)Subscribe to Craft Beer Storm Podcast iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/craft-beer-storm/id1438117278?mt=2Michael Potorti is the Host of Craft Beer Storm and Founder/Brewer at Beara Brewing Co. in Portsmouth, NHMichael PotortiFounder/BrewerHost of "Craft Beer Storm" Podcastmichael@craftbeerstorm.commichael@bearairishbrew.com*** Come visit our brewery for some delicious local craft brew! ***Beara Brewing Co.2800 Lafayette RoadPortsmouth, NH 03801Tel. "Session" is a new word to many a craft beer drinker's lexicon, but the idea of session beer far predates whatever new lingo is helping sell balanced, lower alcohol brews. You may have also seen the words "light," or "table" used in a similar context. Meaning: easy to drink, balanced, dare I say crushable? Some of you just cringed, I know, but it’s been hard going for anyone looking to sell these kinds of beers in our culture of extreme flavor and high alcohol and rarity. That is, until someone decided to pair it with IPA. They need a pitch, a hook, to get people interested in what really, for most people around the world, defines normal everyday great beer. I mean, you don’t see Pilsner Urquell going around pitching itself as light or sessionable. But this is America—it all needs a qualifier of some sort.  One brewery in Salem, Massachusetts has done more than just pitch their beer with the word "session" in the title—they’ve gone all in on the concept, referring to their entire portfolio as American Session Beer. Notch Brewing—under founder Chris Lohring—started out as a contract brand, largely because he couldn’t convince anyone that these styles would ever be in favor. That’s hard to imagine in 2017 when it seems every craft brewer is gunning for the easy-drinking Lager, Hoppy Pilsner, and Golden Ale. So he took a hard road, scraping together support from fellow brewers with capacity, building his brand and base, and finally, just last year, got the investment he needed to open his own small brewery with a taproom and take another step into the future of his idea.  Oh, and the beers are absolutely delicious.  When I was there recently, I had the Pilsner, which was clearly more refined and delicate than most you’ll have in the U.S., and we’ll dig in to the reasons why in this episode. I also had the smoked Grodziskie, which was layered and balanced and just sang on the palate. I also enjoyed his take on the hazy IPA which, when viewed through the lens of session beer, makes a whole lot of sense.

They were in town for Disneyland and the 2014 Beer Bloggers Conference and left some fun session beers from Notch Brewing Co in the fridge–  Hootenanny Berliner Weisse and Cerne Pivo. Notch Brewing Beers With Notch’s Hootenanny, we discuss common off flavors in some Berliner Weiss’ like butyric acid, present from oxygen getting in a sour mash. Notch’s is clean and lacto-tart! We also discuss clarity in the style. We loosen the belt one notch for Notch Brewing’s Černé Pivo, and are shocked at something that is commonly present in most dark lagers, but not this beer. Is it weird? Good? Bad? Listen and find out! Spencer Trappist Ale is up next…you know, America’s first and only Trappist brewery? Opinions of this newest Trappist brewery have varied widely among beer geeks…but their beer? It caused a chant. Is it Monkenweizer? Freedom Trappists! Mystic Brewing and Spencer Trappist Does Jason have right-place-right-time antics? It sure does appear that way, because he scored an exclusive bottle of a pretty awesome brew. Redstone Liquors delivered a bouncing baby Masterson Rye Whiskey Bourbon Barrel aged Day of Doom quad from Mystic that’s very “mystic.” Regardless, it’s a fricken bourbon barrel quad, and the flavors parfait very nicely.
