Let's keep the vibe rolling with this Part 2 of the Pitchfork Music Festival Series, and this fun episode features my conversations with Raleigh-Durham based artist Rosali, the eclectic duo Lira Mondal and Caufield Schnug of Sweeping Promises, and the Chicago-based rap duo Angry Blackmen. Rosali's latest album, Bite Down, is steeped in super cool folk rock vibes and equally stellar songwriting. Rosali have a great conversation, and we not only talk about dogs and N Carolina life, but we get into all kinds of rich terrain including how she strives be vulnerable in her songwriting and what the means for her in other areas of her life.Lira and Caufield bring a super eclectic energy as they are both very much practitioners of the DIY ethos. This amazing couple have been friends now for over a decade and we talk about how they've structured their life in Lawrence, Kansas around their unique artform. They truly walk the walk!Brian and Quentin are Chicago natives who bring their amazing energy to the Pitchfork stage for the first time. Their new album, The Legend of ABM, is deep and dark, and we talk about the issues that we all face, and Brian tells me about his effort to help others know that they are not alone. These two big-hearted giants talk to me about their lives both on and off the stage in this super vibey and very candid conversation.Make sure to give a listen to these amazing in-person interviews!!! Festival Season on Roadcase is finally upon us and we're kicking it off from Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago!! For this Part 1 from Pitchfork, I talked to singer, rapper and multi-genre artist, Tkay Maizda and also had a fun convo with the amazing Riot Girrrrls themselves, Molly Neuman and Allison Wolfe of Bratmobile. Tkay has achieved global recognition already in her brief career, having won NME's Best Australian Solo Artist in 2022. She was also nominated for an ARIA award for Best Rap Song for her 2023 single "Silent Assassin." But accolades alone do not do her justice; Tkay is a joyous human and a tireless artist, and she talked to me about striving to create and perform at the highest levels. We discussed what it was like growing up in Australia, moving frequently from city to city, how she stayed true to herself and her art.Molly and Allison of Bratmobile are back playing live after a 20-year hiatus and are both super excited to be performing again. Having been at the hub of the Riot Girl movement in the early 90s, Bratmobile waved the flag for the DIY spirit and Girl Power. They both talked to me about their fierce advocacy for Women's Rights and for the inclusion of Women in the music industry both in performance and production roles, and talked to me about all the life they've lived since starting up the band over 30 years ago! This is a great episode with these super compelling artists featuring tons of great stories and tales from the road. Originally aiming to release her debut album Moon In the 4th in May, Akenya now says the release date is on divine timing but hopes to share more new music before 2025. Steven and Ian open this week's episode by rehashing a surprising trend from last week — Indiecast angered some people online! The (minor) mishap prompts a discussion about previous Indiecast-related controversies. After that they proceed to a quick Sportscast about the latest insanity over Aaron Rodgers, and Steven's inability to simply enjoy the biggest Wisconsin sports stars (9:34).Next, they talk about the recent controversies related to South By Southwest, which has seen dozens of bands bail out over the festival's ties to the military (14:35). Is it now better PR to quit SXSW than to participate? The guys also discuss the lineup for the Pitchfork Music Festival (24:14)and a viral tweet related to Pavement's tour rider in 1999 (36:55) before ending up with the 10th anniversary of The War On Drugs' Lost In The Dream (44:58) and sharing their favorite albums released since 2014.In Recommendation Corner, Ian talks about a classic 2001 album by Texas band Lift To Experience while Steven recommends recent LPs by Kim Gordon and Hannah Frances (56:01).New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. And talked about the future of music criticism with Alejandro Hernandez, freelance music journalist and Britt Julious, music critic for the Chicago Tribune.

Dave is joined this week by a special guest, Quentin Coaxum (https://quentincmusic.bandcamp.com). Quentin is a professional trumpeter, composer and teacher in the Chicago area, where he's performed at the Chicago Jazz Festival and the Pitchfork Music Festival. Dave and Quentin go deep on two very different records they recommend for retreating to woods, including the lush “Sing to the Moon” by Laura Mvula that could accompany you on a walk in nature, and the lovely, dark and deep “No More Shall We Part” by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds that is better suited to a cabin in fifteen feet of pure white snow. Music discussed today: Quentin Coaxum - You & I Laura Mvula - Sing to the Moon Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - No More Shall We Part Blu - Her Favorite Color Goldman - Sometimes Angel Olsen - Burn Your Fire for No Witness Smog - Rock Bottom Riser Bill Callahan - Apocalypse The Black Keys - Chulahoma Miles Davis - In a Silent Way Marvin Gaye - What's Going On? Festival season is here, and we're totally psyched for it!! Just back from Newport Folk Festival, Roadcase ventures into the depths at Pitchfork Music Festival for this special live interview episode -- the first of the summer -- and it's a hot one. In this episode, Josh sits down with three super-talented artists, each bringing a unique vibe to Union Park for this year's hippest indie Fest. Up first is Sen Morimoto, a Chicago-based performer, songwriter, producer and now co-owner of the new indie label Sooper Records. Outside of the box performer Axel Boman, who hails from Stockholm, Sweden, joins us "fresh off the boat" to tell us about his compelling brand of house and experimental music and regales us with tales of growing up in the hot Rave culture in Scandinavia. Then Ariel Zetina joins Josh to talk about the DJ scene in Chicago and how she has helped shape and support the Queer community in the Windy City. Ethan Schwabe, Reset's engineer and occasional music correspondent, shares interviews with attendees and artists at Chicago's iconic Pitchfork Music Festival.
After Ian hit up the Pitchfork Music Festival last weekend, Steven hits him up for a post-mortem in today's episode (6:31). Turns out Ian skipped out on Saturday — a day marred by weather delays — in order to eat custard in Wisconsin. Which means he missed out on the headline set by Big Thief, the weekend's most polarizing performance. Steven and Ian also talked about the band's recent single, "Vampire Empire," and whether it qualifies as a disappointment.Another huge indie star who put out new music this week is Mitski (22:51). Ahead of her forthcoming album The Land Is Inhospitable And So Are We, due out in September, she released a quality single, "Bug Like An Angel." After discussing the song, the guys try to place Mitski in the galaxy of reigning indie stars. From there, they pivot in a non-indie direction to Post Malone, whose new album Austin is out today. Does he deserve a yay or nay? They report, you decide (32:41).In the mailbag, a listener asks Steven and Ian to stop making fun of Sublime (43:44). This, predictably, only prompts more Sublime jokes. Ian also pulls out his San Diego card to justify the mockery. In Recommendation Corner (52:13), Ian talks about the latest effort from the long-running British band The Clientele, while Steven endorses a recent live album from Father John Misty.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. Hours before his set at Pitchfork Music Festival 2023, Nigerien artist Mdou Moctar sat down with Vocalo's Imani Warren to discuss his audience and most recent releases — album ‘Afrique Victime' and subsequent remix album ‘Afrique Refait.' The two also delve into his bandmates, his worldwide reach and what he thinks is most important about performing. This interview was conducted by Imani Warren. It was edited and produced by Imani Warren. Keep up with Mdou on instagram @Mdou_Moctar or at his website www.mdoumoctar.com.
Nick welcomes TV critic Dan Fienberg from The Hollywood Reporter and The Fien Print to talk about the Emmy Nominations: the snubs, the favorites, the surprises, and how the strike will affect the whole season. They also discuss the return of the classic comedy "Futurama" to Hulu, the glut of other returning shows that will get lost in the mix, and a new documentary about legendary basketball great Wilt Chamberlain. Then, Esmeralda Leon tells Nick about her adventures at the Pitchfork Music Festival (which involve oysters, members of Radiohead, tornado warnings, and Phil Collins soundalikes) while Nick tells Esma about his experience at a Loverboy/Foreigner concert (which involves really old and fat band members, Shriners selling raffle tickets, and an incredibly annoying lead singer in what is basically a glorified tribute band). And, Nick's Dad Tells a Joke. [EP161]
Just after her debut set at Pitchfork Music Festival 2023, New York-based singer Yaya Bey sat down with Vocalo's Nudia Hernandez under rainy skies (and a few umbrellas). The two discussed her time at the festival, recent EP ‘Exodus the North Star' and finding inspiration in African Diasporic sounds. This interview was conducted and edited by Nudia Hernandez, and produced by Ayana Contreras. Keep up with Yaya Bey on Instagram at @yayabeybay.
The day after his set at Pitchfork Music Festival 2023, Chicago artist and friend of the station Ric Wilson met with Vocalo's Nudia Hernandez to chat about his performance and his time at the festival. They delve into his latest project, ‘CLUSTERFUNK,' with A-Trak and Chromeo, plus his personal style and a debut solo album in the works … and address the rumors about a move to LA. This interview was conducted by Nudia Hernandez. It was edited and produced by Ayana Contreras. Keep up with Ric Wilson on Instagram at @ricwilsonisme.
This week, Features director Jessi D met up with Ariel Zetina at Pitchfork Music Festival between weather delays in a park field house in Union Park. Ariel is a Chicago-based producer and DJ and made her official Pitchfork debut at this year's festival. They discuss the ensemble nature of her 2022 album, Cyclorama, what inspired her to become a DJ and her ascension to resident DJ at Smartbar, and planning her Pitchfork live show, complete with dancers and costume design. "I think my favorite thing is being able to get things to flow and move in the chaos of it all. The music doesn't stop for a number of hours, you have to be on your toes and live in the moment." - Ariel Zetina on why she loves DJing. Produced by Jessi D. Photo Credit: Alexa Viscius
