This week we journey back in time to look at Sydney’s music scene through the eyes of three different women. You can hit it as loud as you can First up, we hear from musician and music mentor turned academic, Hannah Fairlamb, about rock boot camps and gender equity. Produced by Mel Bakewell, with music by Ferus Cut Blue Dot Sessions. You can learn more about Rock Camp here. What About Her? Frances Swan co-wrote What About Me (A Moving Pictures Song), the 1982 classic Australian anthem, during a decade often described as a boy’s club. Christa Hughes rejected gender expectations in the late 90s and early 2000s, touring with Machine Gun Fellatio. Today, up-and-coming Milly McPherson has been making waves in a rock and roll circuit, inspired by the women who came before her. Join your host, Zara Upfold, as she explores the expectations and successes of these incredible women, the sadly predictable reactions of a male dominated music industry, and asks What About Her? Frances Swan played her original music live in front of an audience for the first time on the 25th of November. Milly McPherson is currently raising funds to re-released Milly's song under her own name, alongside a new album and a short film. Finally, Machine Gun Felatio have recently reunited and Christa Hughes has been performing in the band for the first time in 20 years. Produced by Zara Upfold, with support from Phoebe Adler-Ryan and Evana Ho. TISM return armed with a tantalising trifecta, with their first headline run since 2004 in October and November. The upcoming Death To Art Tour is bound to go down in Australian music history, with TISM set to be joined by fellow Aussie icons ESKIMO JOE, MACHINE GUN FELLATIO, BEN LEE and THE MAVIS'S.With four of the country's most iconic acts teaming up for the Death To Art Tour, this historic run of shows not only mark these as TISM's first headline shows over two decades, it sees fellow sonic scoundrels MACHINE GUN FELLATIO reform for the first time in 19 years, as well as THE MAVIS'S reforming for the first time in six years.Releasing a brand new single I've Gone Hillsong in 2022, the group's first new material in close to 20 years, TISM also teased at the time an album which did not exist. Fast-forward to 2024, and TISM have since released a new EP, 2023's The "C" Word, complete with caterwauling commentary and chaotic charisma. And, most recently, the beloved unruly collective have ventured into a brand new chapter, with their new full length album Death To Art, out now.TISM have retained their anonymous and cult-like status since first forming back in the early 1980s. Laced with nihilistic humour and gleeful sarcasm, as well as a razor-sharp penchant for hybrid dance, pop and rock, TISM may have kept their identities a secret all this time, but their impact on the Australian musical landscape remains undeniable.HEAVY got the rare opportunity to share some time with TISM, and, as you would expect, things got a little crazy. Back in the late '90s, Chit Chat Von Loopin Stab created a chaotic eight-piece art-rock band named Machine Gun Fellatio, who sold hundreds of thousands of CDs back when they cost $30 a pop, thereby winning the musical game. He also co-wrote The Whitlams' No Aphrodisiac which won an ARIA for Song of the Year in 1998 - as well as writing the Tex, Don and Charlie song Fake That Emotion, with Tex Perkins. Plus, he wrote Chunky Chunky Air Guitar, too.
