When we think about being young, we picture a time of exploration and discovering who we are. What we don't picture? Cancer. But there's a worrying trend in the cancer world with young adults getting cancer at higher rates, and scientists don't know why. Kelly Spill was 28 years old when she was diagnosed with colorectal cancer. She was pregnant when she first noticed symptoms. Doctor after doctor told her not to worry. When she was finally diagnosed, her cancer was Stage 3. This week on “Say More,” Kelly's story of treatment and survival. Later a conversation with Dr. Andrea Cercek, an oncologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York, who leads the first clinic in the world to specialize in young people with colorectal cancers.
For years, journalist Larry Ingrassia thought his family was tragically unlucky. His mother, two sisters, and brother all died of cancer. Later in life, he understood it was no coincidence: threaded throughout his family's DNA was a hereditary cancer gene, vastly increasing their risk of the deadly disease. In this episode, Shirley talks to Larry about the moment he discovered the cause, the difficult choice of getting himself tested, and how greater knowledge of family history can lead to monitoring that saves lives. It's been quite a week in Parliament. Workplace Relations Minister Brooke van Velden dropped the c-word, quoting a controversial opinion piece by Andrea Vance. Meanwhile, the Te Pati Maori co-leaders were suspended for 21 days and yesterday Labour MP Willie Jackson was booted from the house. How low have the standards of behaviour dropped in our Parliament? Also, a single Wellington bus lane enforcement camera on Cambridge Terrace has made nearly $800,000 in just two months, with thousands being stung. Is this about enforcement or revenue gathering? To answer those questions, Upper Hutt mayor Wayne Guppy and former Wellington mayor Dame Kerry Prendergast joined Nick Mills for Friday Faceoff. Cancer doctor Barrett Rollins only discovered the extent of his wife's advanced cancer when she collapsed at work, revealing a football sized breast tumor. Barrett's wife Jane, also a world-class cancer researcher, confounded her entire community when it was revealed that she had hidden her own cancer diagnosis for years, only sharing the truth when it was too late. On this episode of The C-Word: Stories of Cancer, Shirley and Barrett discuss the complex psychology of cancer, why people struggle to face this disease, and the heartbreaking experience of watching a loved one suffer. A sweary few days in politics has raised questions about the use of the C word. Minister Brooke van Velden dropped the verbal grenade in Parliament in protest over the slur being directed at her and other female ministers in a newspaper column about rushed changes to pay equity laws. Keith Montgomery from the University of Auckland linguistics department spoke to Lisa Owen.
Winston Peters says behaviour in Parliament has become degrading. It comes after a recommendation three Te Pati Māori MPs be suspended for their haka in the house, and Minister Brooke van Velden said the c-word. Yesterday he launched a broadside on X against the actions taken in Parliament, saying the House of Representatives has become a House of Chaos. The Deputy Prime Minister told Mike Hosking standards have slipped, and it's the Speaker's job to rein it in. He says the rot started under former Speaker Trevor Mallard, when he loosened dress standards. “As Steven Maharey, the former MP and Minister from Palmerston North said, once you let down dress and other standards, everything else will be let down as well and to be debased – and that's exactly what's happened.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The use of the C-word has sparked quite a debate this week. Language expert, Andreea Calude explains the evolution of swearing.
It was a fiery day in Parliament yesterday, with Workplace Relations minister Brooke van Velden quoting a controversial opinion piece and dropping the c-word in Parliament. Was this acceptable? Also, the Greens have released their alternative budget, promising $88 billion in new taxes. Is this lunacy or realistic? To answer those questions, Transport minister and Hutt South MP Chris Bishop and Labour's health and Wellington issues spokeswoman Ayesha Verrall joined Nick Mills for Politics Thursday. The Workplace Relations Minister Brooke van Velden has dropped the c-bomb in Parliament in protest over the slur being directed at her and other female ministers in a newspaper column. It's thought to be the first time the word has been recorded in the debating chamber. It comes after a Sunday Star-Times opinion piece used the word in connection to female ministers overhauling the pay equity scheme.
Brooke van Velden is defending what seems to be an unprecedented use of the c-word in Parliament during an explosive debate. Lillian Hanly reports.
Workplace Relations Minister Brooke van Velden says she used the c-word in the House on Wednesday as a way of sticking up for herself and other ministers. Political editor Jo Moir spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.
Workplace Relations Minister Brooke van Velden dropped the c-bomb in Parliament on Wednesday, the use of the word was in protest to the word being directed at her and other female ministers in a newspaper column by journalist Andrea Vance in the Sunday Star Times. University of Canterbury senior law lecturer Cassandra Mudgway spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.
First, a small update on what I said yesterday on pay equity. My gut says it won't damage the Government. Don't get me wrong – if I was the opposition I would be prosecuting this as hard as I could, the way they are, because they have a genuine issue and ongoing issue, at least until the Budget, that they quite rightly believe is there for the taking in terms of points, headlines, and moral high ground. I don't think that ultimately is true. But I fully get they think it is. The tide turned yesterday though in Question Time. Not because Brooke van Velden dropped the c-word. Watching it live, it was quite the moment. Question Time has become dour, there is limited talent on display, and the Speaker is cantankerous and ruins the fun. But yesterday was alive with frisson. Brooke van Veldon's mic drop moment was pointing out that Jan Tinetti, the questioner, a former Woman's minister, a woman who railed against misogyny, was using misogyny by quoting a misogynistic article, authored by a woman to make her point. That led to applause and rightly so. It further exposed the Labour Party, and in fact most of the opposition benches, as frauds who are arguing the pay equity issue using bogus material and fake facts. The more this is debated the more hope you have that a wider grouping of us will tune in and get into the detail, because it is in the detail the truth lies. The equity laws, or rules, were a shambles and being milked by unions. But the tide turned because there seems genuine anger within the Government over what Andrea Vance was allowed to do. When I say allowed, I assume she is edited and therefore cleared. The odd thing for me is I struggle to get upset at being attacked. Being a public figure, you are open for this sort of stuff, and I have received more than most. It's water off a duck's back, especially from an angsty journalist. But van Veldon, Collins and, as Vance calls them, the "hype squad" seem genuinely outraged and it is that outrage that turned, or at least will turn, the dial. If they argue on fact, and the other side argue on emotion using lies, bogus material, and foul language, they will eventually lose. Hence the dent so many thought was coming for the Government will never arrive. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
ACT's Brooke van Velden is not apologising for using the c-word in the House today. The Workplace Relations Minister said it after a question from Labour that referenced an opinion piece in The Post that used it in relation to a group of female ministers. She delivered a strong rebuke - and criticised Labour for bringing it up in the House. She says she stands by saying it. "I wanted to stand up for myself and stand up for all the female Cabinet ministers - that it's not okay that we have misogynistic abuse and it's not okay that it was brought into the Chamber." There are a lot of remarkable things about that C-word column yesterday, and one of them is that it is still up online, and apparently no one is sorry for this. If you haven't seen this column, let me get you up to speed on this: Yesterday, Sunday Star Times columnist Andrea Vance did something that I would venture no other mainstream columnist has ever done in this country - she called a minister of the Crown a c-word in the newspaper. She didn't write the c-word out, she wrote it as c....The subject of it was the gender pay equity revamp, the minister was Nicola Willis and Andrea wrote - "turns out you can have it all, so long as you're prepared to be a C...." Now, I don't even know how to start explaining to you how wild it is that that happened yesterday, that Andrea dropped the C-bomb in the Sunday Star Times. That word is the 2nd most banned word on radio. We are not allowed to say it - and if we do, go to town on us and complain because somebody is going to get in a huge amount of trouble, and we will be saying sorry. But at least on the radio, to some extent, I think we have the defence of being able to say - Hey, look, it was the heat of the moment and the words slipped out of my mouth. That is not what happens in newspapers. Words don't just slip out onto the paper, you write it down, you consider it, you rewrite it, you reread it. You make sure that every single word is exactly what you mean to say. Nothing about that is in the heat of the moment. And then you send it to your editors, and your editors read it, and they look at it and they go - yep, that's okay, they can go in the newspaper. And that it what happened. Now, I'm not a prude. I am not offended by swearing, I swear myself, and I have also done exactly what Andrea has done. I have said things about ministers that I shouldn't have said, and I've regretted and I've apologized for it. But this is out of hand, what has happened here. There has to be some decorum. I mean, we can hardly complain about anonymous trolls on social media attacking our female politicians when our very own columnists do it in print with their names attached to it. And reverse this, by the way, if you're not offended by it: Imagine it was Jacinda. Imagine that a columnist had written this about Jacinda, how much outrage that would have caused, how cancelled that person would have been. There were other c-words we weren't allowed to say about Jacinda. Cindy was one of them, communist was another. And if you said either of them, people would flip out. Well, imagine how people would have flipped out if we'd said the c-word. It is very hard to respect an argument about how Nicola Willis isn't a real feminist in a column that attacks her in the most un-feminist way, right? It uses the most gendered putdown that you can think of. It uses terms like girl math to basically suggest that she can't balance the country's books because she's a woman. Now for the record, I think Andrea Vance is a fantastic journalist and an incredibly incisive opinion writer, and I think that her editor Tracy Watkins is the best at what she does, but this was a mistake and it lets everyone down when we drag the tone down that badly. Tonight on The Huddle, Trish Sherson from Sherson Willis PR and Josie Pagani from Child Fund joined in on a discussion about the following issues of the day - and more! Andrea Vance's piece in the Sunday Star Times calling female Government MPs the c-word and accusing Nicola Willis of 'girl math' has copped some backlash. What did we think when we read that? In this special “Weekend Update” edition of Kliq This #134, Kevin Nash and Sean Oliver kick off the episode with an unexpected beauty tip: beef tallow! Sean reveals his newest skincare obsession, while Kev jokes about the surprising—and sometimes hilarious—side effects of slathering beef fat on your face. The guys also go deep on everyday weirdness, from random run-ins with city street dogs to unsolicited skincare commentary from their significant others. Kevin details his latest trip to Colombia for stem cell treatments at BioXcellerator, describing the pain, the process, and the promise of feeling sharper than ever. Naturally, the conversation takes a comedic detour into U.S.–Colombia relations and tongue-in-cheek speculation about trade wars and hidden agendas. As always, Kev and Sean deliver their trademark mix of humor and candor, with a few spicy one-liners sprinkled in. Wrestling nostalgia takes center stage as Kevin reminisces about classic matches and the recently departed Colonel DeBeers, leading him to a trip down memory lane with longtime friend Scott Hall. Kevin also chats about Toni Storm's standout AEW performance, pointing out how old-school “chicken**t heel” tactics still have their place in modern wrestling. And because no Kliq This show is complete without sharp wit and real talk, the guys tackle everything from folks in the comments to the ins and outs of traveling the globe. Wrapping up, “Big Sexy” dishes out advice in a “Dear Sexy” segment, tackling relationship drama, wedding-day blowups, and more. As this podcast is being released on Thanksgiving Day Paul begins by thanking those people who choose to follow the Foundation's work, those who forward our articles, podcasts and videos to others, and those who donate time and money to the Foundation. He also addresses the challenges of living at three different homes (Bainbridge Island, Portland and Rancho Mirage) in 2024. We know some donations have been lost in the mail. Our concern is people will declare a charitable deduction that did not actually happen. By the way, the permanent address of the Foundation is now - 2445 NW Westover Road #311, Portland, Oregon 97210. Paul comments on his challenges in recommending cryptocurrency. Finally he discusses the life changing impact of goal setting. The following are articles and videos on goal setting from some of the Truth Tellers Paul recommends. Jim Dahle writes to young doctors but the information is usually good for all people who are putting together a financial plan. The Power of Focus in Your Financial Life Jonathan Clements is struggling with cancer and for anyone facing death sooner than expected, and the goal setting that might be considered, I think you will find his journey worth reading. The C Word. William Bernstein has recently updated his best selling , “The Four Pillars of Investing.” In this short introduction you will hopefully decided it's worth reading the rest of the book. Here is a podcast that you won't want to miss. Larry Swedroe is interviewed by another Truth Teller, Ben Felix and Cameron Passmore. The book they discuss has been updated since the interview. "Your Complete Guide to a Successful and Secure Retirement" is one of the best books I know for those trying to address the many important retirement goals. While Christine Benz is the Director of Personal Finance at Morningstar I thought it might be interesting to get her take on the non-financial plans we should consider. Her new book has become a best seller. How to Retire: 20 lessons for a happy, successful, and wealthy retirement.

SERIES 3 EPISODE 59: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: "GARBAGE" IS STICKING TO THE TEFLON DON AS SCANDAL WORSENS; 'COMEDIAN' WANTED TO CALL KAMALA HARRIS THE C-WORD: The Madison Square Garden “Puerto Rico Is Garbage” disaster is not only NOT going away; it is still getting worse, with the news that Trump staffers VETTED that statement AND the tasteless reference to Latinos entering the country and the rest of the Tony Hinchcliffe comments and Hinchcliffe's script originally included a line in which he dropped a c-word in describing Kamala Harris. The news site “The Bulwark” is reporting that, and that Trump staffers directed Hinchcliffe to take it out… BUT that they missed the anti-Hispanic material or as they have now claimed Hinchcliffe ad libbed all that even though the video clearly shows him reading his material off the same teleprompter everybody else used. Day three of Trump's self-immolation among Hispanic voters who make up twelve percent of the electorate – one WEEK before the election and no sign that it – like every previous racist Trump controversy – is actually abating. STILL the lead story at the New York Times – at one point it had SIX front page stories – AND at the Washington Post – AND on the Fox News talk shows AND at the Wall Street Journal AND at the ultra-conservative Washington Examiner AND when the Trump campaign's defense is ‘well at least he didn't call her a rhymes-with-bunt like he planned' they have actually stepped neck high in it, especially since the pro-Trump PAC run by Elon Musk posted tweets based on the C-Word. Literally, says “The C- Word.” Even the fig leaf usually accepted by the bothsidesist media looking for a way – SOME way, ANY way – to avoid slamming Trump – has opened up a whole new line of stories: the disingenuous statement from the conveniently Latina spokesperson disavowing the jokes only served to spin off a series of reports on all the OTHER remarks Hinchcliffe and others made Sunday at Madison Square Garden: from the line about African-Americans and watermelons and the line calling the Vice President's staff “pimp handlers.” And the story is still expanding. Now Joe Rogan and Robert F. Kennedy Junior have been sucked under. AND AS THE VIBE KEEPS SHIFTING TOWARDS HARRIS there are plenty of different flavors of insurrection to worry about but a Contingent Election isn't one of them. B-Block (21:05) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Trump has a "Sir" story. The Border Patrol agents said he was better on the border than Lincoln. The Don't-Cancel-Your-WaPo-Subscription crowd is missing the point: don't criticize angry ex-customers. If you can, join them. And it's not enough to bully reporters into sanewashing Trump, you must reward them. Thus CNN's embarrassment Dana Bash is profiled in The Wall Street Journal and we are told: This Is Her Moment. C-Block (33:20) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: If Trump ruined Giuliani's life, why was Rudy at Trump's self-immolation at Madison Square Garden? Well among other things I believe Rudy now lives in a hallway at Penn Station so it was a quick commute. Plus, you may not have known but Rudy's been nuts since at least the mid-90's, as I'll tell you.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Since the dawn of the chemical era more than 300,000 chemicals have been invented, and many are made from oil and natural gas. While some manufactured chemicals have indeed provided benefit (Disinfectants! Antibiotics!), they have also caused great harm. Manufactured chemicals pollute every corner of the planet. They kill bees, fish, and mammals. They nearly destroyed the ozone and, yes, they give us cancer. Many types of cancer are on the rise in the US, and one explanation for this increase lies in our world of chemicals. On today's show environmental investigative reporter Kristina Marusic identifies the harmful environmental exposures linked to cancer; she also provides a step-by-step roadmap for reducing your cancer risk.
