The March 2025 edition of Mardi Gras Anthems marks a decade of anthems as I started making them back in 2015. For this set I've reached back to classic hits from the 80's and 90's with modern updates as well as some more recent songs from this millennium. The set kicks off with a repurposed mix of Kylie's "Better The Devil You Know" followed by an updated mix of "Happenin' All Over Again" by Lonnie Gordon, which was one of my favourite Stock Aitken Watermen songs from back in the day. The amazing Division 4 provides three stand out mixes here for Madonna, Aretha Franklin and Vanessa Amorosi respectively. The equally amazing Mark from Dirty Disco also features four of his mixes here and as always, I'm very grateful to them both for providing me with their remixes. Classic songs from Anastacia, Céline Dion, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Tina Cousins and Cher all feature here. One of my all time favourite songs from the 90's was "Heaven" by Sarah Washington and here it is given a killer new remix from 7th Heaven. Robbie Carrigan delivers a stellar mix of the classic "It's Raining Men" by The Weather Girls as well. I'll be away for the whole Mardi Gras weekend celebrating my birthday so here are some awesome anthems to help you celebrate Mardi Gras. I was a little bit slow off the mark getting my annual Pride Anthems edition out for June this month. None the less, here is the June 2023 edition. This is 27 remixed club anthems starting off with some smooth house remixes and moving towards main club and big room club anthems from the middle through to the end. The set kicks off with Dirty Disco's classic house remix of Candi Staton's "Young Hearts Run Free" and moves into Division 4's funky mix of Angie Stone's "Wish I Didn't Miss You". Jacked features two mixes here for Divine Inspiration and Chic respectively and DJ KaktuZ turns in a great house mix of "Believe" by Cher. Division 4 features two more mixes for Kylie Minogue and Madonna respectively and the Beachbums do a nice re-edit of one of my favourite songs from last year "Fearless" by Tom Grennan. Jet Boot Jack has been turning out some fantastic house mixes recently and two of his feature here. Shauna Jensen released an uplifting anthem for World Pride in Sydney this year with fantastic vocals. I had to put the Dirty Disco and Debby Holiday collaboration "Find A Way" in this set as it has fast become one of my all time favourite club tracks - period. The messaging is powerful and Debby's vocals have never been more amazing. With it's official release recently, Mark (de Lang) did a remix of his original remix and it is stunning. Toy Armada has been busy with Jace M turning out mixes for Janet Jackson and Kelly Clarkson as well as his original take on the 90's classic Sunchyme. Keala Settle's "This Is Me" is a powerful anthem and Joe Gauthreaux's remix lifts it up even more. I snuck a couple of male vocals in this edition as I didn't do a Mardi Gras Men this year so I had to put Tony Moran's awesome version of "Pride" In The Name Of Love on here as well. The last few tracks are pure pop joy from Demi Lovato and Boyz With Toyz. Vanessa Amorosi's powerhouse "Absolutely Everybody" closes out this massive edition of Pride Anthems for June 2023. Party hard and stay safe. Andy & Ryan are back with another heady mix of Eurovision goodness in which pianos duel and it all gets a bit angst-ridden up in here. We start with Romanian-Norwegian Ovi who managed to reach the contest twice with Paula Seling. Their pop duet 'Playing with Fire' features a giant perspex double piano, a leather catsuit, and, naturally, lots of flames. It's a certified banger which ultimately placed third. Elsewhere Lynsey de Paul and Mike Moran also have a 'piano-off' with the catchy 'Rock Bottom' which represented the UK during the bleak strike-ridden days of 1977. The strikes meant no broadcast of A Song for Europe that year and a 5-week delay of Eurovision itself as the UK struggled to honour their duty to hold the contest. Apparently there were sighs of relief all round at the BBC when Rock Bottom missed out on the top spot. Andy goes back to his happy place - 2003 - for that glorious Turkish winner 'Everyway That I Can' which saw feisty Sertab Erener 'ha' and bellydance her way into the Eurovision history books determined to get her lover back. Similarly desperate for her relationship is Iceland's Selma who will even shoot arrows and wear pedal-pushers to ensnare her man. Sadly, with this awesome song 'If I Had Your Love' (which just maybe Andy's favourite Euro track of all time!) she fails to better her 2nd place in '99 and doesn't even advance beyond the semi-finals. Ryan muses that it was simply ahead of its time and he may just be right about that. Elsewhere we have Birthe Kjaer painting the town red while simultaneously giving the Danish musical-loving audience a title for a highly successful Eurovision-based theatre production and Vanessa Amorosi surviving a nasty car accident on stage in her bid to represent Australia back in 2020. It's not hard to see why absolutely everybody loved her attempt. The chaos monkey that is the Randomiser is also in an angsty mood, selecting Victoria from Bulgaria who complains that 'Growing Up is Getting Old' in some style back in 2021. At this rate we're going to end up trusting this crazy song-choosing machine. Until next time Euro-chums! Following the fabulous introduction into 2000s Aussie pop divas Vanessa Amorosi and Nikki Webster's careers, this second part of our special celebrates ARIA Award-winning duo Sister2Sister, the talented singer-songwriter Leah Haywood, and vocal powerhouse Joanne. Sister2Sister, made up of sisters Christine and Sharon Muscat, made a splash in Australia and the UK with their hits 'Sister' and 'What's A Girl To Do' in the early 2000s. They weren't just a pair of incredible vocalists but also super engaging live performers who can slay a Y2K popstar choreography! The sisters' success saw them score an ARIA Award and support Britney Spears and 5ive on tour outside Australia, and feature on the Bring It On soundtrack. In the past decade or so, Aussie hit songwriter and producer Leah Haywood has been working behind the scenes in LA on some of our fave bops via Selena Gomez, BLACKPINK, Justin Bieber, Demi Lovato and more but we're taking it all the way back to her 2000s popstar debut "Leah", which spawned inescapable bops like 'We Think It's Love', 'Takin' Back What's Mine' and 'Summer of Love'. With Leah now thankfully back in the spotlight as an artist after two decades, releasing top-tier material under the pseudonym Haywood, it feels right to go back to her 2000s efforts and celebrate her journey. The final artist on our two-part 2000s Aussie Pop special is Joanne, a real vocal powerhouse and long-lost Young Diva member, in our humble opinion. Big soul diva vocals with camp, Y2K disco-pop production and dance bangers - everything about Joanne's discography is a maximalist 'girls night out' experience packed with sass and handbags-on-the-floor moments, from the signature late 90s banger 'Jackie' through to 'So Damn Fine', 'I Don't Know' and 'Busted'. Vanessa Joy Amorosi (born 8 August 1981) is an Australian singer-songwriter and recording artist. Her combined album and single sales have reached over two million worldwide. She is known for her wide belting range (being able to reach a C#6 with ease) and her ability to vocally cover various genres of music including pop, rock, blues, jazz and gospel. Amorosi started performing in shopping centres and local council concerts under the supervision of her family. She also performed on Young Talent Time. Amorosi rose to fame in 1999 with the release of her debut single, "Have a Look", which reached gold status in Australia. The following year, she achieved international success with her debut studio album, The Power. She performed at both the 2000 Olympic Games opening ceremony and its accompanying closing ceremony in Sydney. Her performance of "Heroes Live Forever" at the opening ceremony gained international acclaim and recognition due to the enormous live vocal range. To date Amorosi has received a total of 16 ARIA and APRA nominations. She has won an APRA award with "Shine", a VIVA Comet Award for "Best International Newcomer and an ARIA No.1 Chart Award with "This Is Who I Am".
Your favourite pop explorers Joel and David are heading Down Under for this special two-part episode celebrating some unforgettable Australian pop icons from the late 90s and early 2000s. This episode is all about the vocal powerhouse diva Vanessa Amorossi and teen-pop sensation Nikki Webster. Both were absolutely essential to Australian popular culture of the decade and their vibrant pop bops are still adored by millions of millennials to this very day. Best known for her international dance hit 'Absolutely Everybody', Vanessa Amorosi is unquestionably one of Australia's greatest vocalists of her generation. Joel and David get into her multi platinum-selling debut album "The Power", which also includes hits like 'Shine', 'The Power' and 'Every Time I Close My Eyes'. They also look into Vanessa's more European-facing highlights like 'One Thing Leads to Another' and the French "Ab Fab" theme 'Champagne, Champagne', before toasting to her monumental comeback in 2008 with 'Perfect' and 2009's banger 'This Is Who I Am'. By his own admission, Nikki Webster has the pop career Joel has always wanted. Straight after her unforgettable role in the 2000 Sydney Olympics Opening and Closing ceremonies, 13-year old Nikki signed a major label deal and turned her newfound profile into a successful pop career that also spawned a clothing line and her own businesses. The savvy dancer and musical theatre star will forever be immortalised for her breakthrough smash 'Strawberry Kisses' but Joel and David are not stopping there. Cue gems like 'Depend on Me', 'The Best Days', 'Something More Beautiful' and the Delta Goodrem-penned 'Let's Dance'! If you're not familiar with these Aussie ladies of pop, we hope you enjoy this introduction and if you do, we hope this nostalgic trip brings you joy. In one of our most enjoyable interviews to date, we're joined by drag artist, entertainer and producer, Art Simone, who also happens to be the current reigning Queen of Australia and Drag Performer of the Year two years running. We apologise in advance for all the laughing, we couldn't help ourselves. What greeted us as we jumped on a Zoom call was not only a wall of mannequin heads wearing wigs, but one of the most glamourous queens we've ever interviewed, and boy did she make us laugh! Art Simone chats to us about confidence-building, how she discovered drag as a teenager, the exciting projects she's got coming up, and why Vanessa Amorosi's jam "Absolutely Everybody" is her favourite song to perform to. Oh, and we also find out that she uses skincare from The Ordinary and asap. In this episode the Unflopped crew discuss Fidel Castro, the Olympics, and Doop. Stuart and Sean each pitch a flop single that they think deserved to be a pop music hit and Judge Joe gives his verdict. Kat Ayala joins us to talk about her diverse and flourishing career. Kat tells us about melding big rock tones and intricate ambience in Forces & Fury - her rad project with Astrid Holtz - gigs with Vanessa Amorosi, Hayley Mary, Royale with Cheese and many more touring acts. Kat has great stories about landing high profile gigs, how Diesel introduced her to Yamaha, in turn leading to a Vox artist endorsement and opening for Daryl Braithwaite in her pop-punk band - and what that led to. She is a gear nut - embracing both modellers and stompboxes, bending signal flow to her will and playing guitars that span the gamut from classic design to cutting edge modernity. Above all this, Kat is a humble community builder and its no surprise she is in such demand as a musician. About This Episode: Luna Akire is a singer/songwriter daughter of two artists drummer and fashion designer and has always lived surrounded by art. After years of concerts, she had partially set aside music to devote herself to her family and her work in the field of fashion. In her life, the calling of music and creation has always been strong and she has reached a point where she could no longer resist and she started writing for other singers, including Vanessa Amorosi. Happy vibes to everyone. It was never in the plan, but somehow the last bit of this chat is dedicated to Mark Holden. Certainly it was Chris' time to get the sillies this week, and he meant no offence to any members of Blink 182, The Used, S Club 7, Josh Homme, Vanessa Amorosi or The Mamas & The Papas. 2 of them weren't mentioned in this episode. 2013 has given Australian music icon, Russell Morris, an unexpected hit record some 44 years after his first national number one smash with pop-psychedelic smash, The Real Thing. I produced this music feature with Russell in 2014, although I first met him in about 1992 when I interviewed him in Hobart. He's smart, funny, brilliant and has always been just bloody fabulous and generous to me. Except for that time he rang my show to wish me a happy birthday and I thought he was JPY! Sorry, Russell! xxAustralian music industry icon Russell Morris joined Carol Duncan's program while doing a series of performances in Newcastle and surrounds. (Carol Duncan:Carol Duncan)"This album (Sharkmouth) was done out of a labour of love because I like roots and blues music and I'd always wanted to do a roots and blues album.""I chose Australian history because I've always loved any type of history. You'd think the two kisses of death for a gold album would be blues and Australian history, so it wasn't done with the intention, it was just done as a labour of love which has proved to be really enlightening.""Producer Mitch Cairns' foresight was out of desperation of staying alive. At that stage, Brian Cadd who I was working with, had decided that he was going overseas and he dropped the bomb on us that he might not be coming back.""At that stage Jim Keays was very sick and Mitch said, "You've gotta do something or we won't have any work!" And I said, "Well, I've got the blues album," and he said, "Well, FINISH IT!""It is a great thing (the success of Sharkmouth) and I have to thank particularly the ABC because they ABC embraced it from day one and just went 'bang', but the commercial stations just didn't want to know. The ABC just broke it right across the country.""If anyone was going to have a gold record this year you'd have put me at the bottom of the list.""I think what happens with a lot of my peers, a lot of people will see a new record and whether it's from Joe Camilleri, Daryl Braithwaite - they pre-judge it and don't listen to it.""I remember when we first started in Melbourne, Ian Meldrum said to me, "We'll go and see Stan Rofe at 3AW." Stan Rofe was a big star to me, he was on air and I'd heard him on the radio station and I said, "Well how are we going to do that?" and he said, "We'll just go up to the radio station!""So we went up to the radio station and walked in and Stan came down and had a cup of tea with us. Ian said, "We've got this, what do you think?" and Stan said, 'Love it, I'll play it.'And that's what it was like.""Well, Mitch and I spoke about it (initial expectations of Sharkmouth) and I said if we're lucky we might sell 5,000 copies, if we can get an independent release.""We'd have sold them at gigs to try and get our money back and if we had a small deal with a company and sold 5,000 or 8,000 we'd have made the money back." Gold status is in 2013 is 35,000 and Sharkmouth is now creeping up towards platinum - it's around 60,000 now and platinum is 70,000.""When I did the unplugged album with Liberation it sold around 8,000 so it's been a great experience for both of us.""We signed to an independent record company and they took it and then rang me up, the first time it went in to the charts at about number 89, then it jumped to 49 and I was over the moon. I rang Mitch and we celebrated, and then the next week it jumped 20 places again and it just kept going right up into the top 10."Russell has continued a great tradition started by The Beatles of being turned down by every record company in the country and then having a success."I tell you what is ironic, The Real Thing was turned down as well. EMI hated it, they thought it was the biggest load of rubbish they'd ever heard.""EMI didn't want to release it, they were only going to release it in Melbourne to try and make their money back because I had a following in Melbourne, so Ian Meldrum and I got in a car and drove to Sydney to go and see all the (radio) program managers because at that stage you could knock on the door of these commercial stations before they became corporate and say, "Can I speak to the program manager," "Here's the song, what do you think, our record company think it's a load of rubbish, would you play it?" 'Of course we'll play it, will you sign that?'"So we signed a petition that came out to really stick it to the record company. Radio and record companies at that stage weren't getting along very well. It was just prior to the record ban where radio wanted to stop paying royalties to radio for playing songs on the air."Russell Morris is thought of as having lots of pop hits and a pure voice but he dabbled in blues back in the 1970s when he used musicians from Chain on one of his albums."They were my favourite band. I always use Barry Harvey and Barry Sullivan always, on everything, and I'd always used Phil Manning, so strangely enough it's actually Phil Manning playing all those licks in 'Sweet, Sweet Love' and you'd think, 'Who's this syrupy guitar player?' and it's Phil Manning!""It's (blues) where I wanted to head but I was painted into a corner once I had a pop hit and the record company saying, 'You've got to produce another hit!' and it became a factory after a while. You get caught in it.""I actually wished Chain had been my band because it would have taken me on a whole other direction. I don't think Ian, Molly, would have been too happy although at that stage we'd sort of split.""He's still my best mate but we'd had a couple of professional disagreements. He saw me as Australia's Davey Jones from The Monkees or some such thing and I wanted to go in a different direction completely as a singer/songwriter so we differed on the way we were going and the record company was pressuring for another single, but I really would have loved to be with a band like Chain.""But your fate is your fate. Whatever happens, those doors open and close for a reason and maybe if I'd started it earlier then it wouldn't have worked.""I was happy doing The Real Thing, I quite liked psychedelia. I didn't like pop a lot but I remember Ian (Molly Meldrum) had done a number of songs with me and we'd done 'Only A Matter of Time' which I absolutely loathe, it was on the back of The Real Thing, and a couple of pop songs and I said to Ian, 'This is rubbish, we're not going in the direction I want to go,' I said, 'I'm not John Farnham, I'm not Ronnie Burns and I'm not Normie Rowe. I want to do something that they wouldn't even contemplate thinking about doing. I want to go in that direction. Let's go psychedelia, let's go into something more band oriented than a pop single.'"Ian, to his credit, agreed and said, 'You're right, they're not different enough."Russell Morris actually had a whole album ready to go at one stage and decided it wasn't good enough and he wanted to re-record the whole thing."EMI had gotten a record producer and he'd gotten a head of steam up and away he went. I tend to go along with things and say to people, 'I don't know if this is the right thing ...' and they don't listen, they don't listen ... and all of a sudden they go, 'You know what? Scrap it.' And that's what happened. He went ahead and put strings and brass on everything and it just drove me insane. I said to him, 'I'm not releasing it."Russell Morris on recording The Real Thing."We used 8-track recording for The Real Thing. There was only two tracks for the effects, one for the vocals, everything just kinda got bounced down, I don't think we even slaved another machine to worry about generations. I think we did slave another machine for the effects.""I cannot take any credit for it. Ian Meldrum was the total architect, it was his concept from start to finish.""A lot of it was trial and error, experimentation, but giving Molly his dues he doesn't know what he wants in the studio but when he stumbles across it he knows instinctively that it's right. Everyone else will be nodding off at 3am and he'll have had some poor bloody guitar player out there playing the part over and over, 'No! Try it this way! Try something else! Make it sound like stars!' And that's what happens."In December 2011, Ian 'Molly' Meldrum had a serious fall while at home which for a while it seemed he wouldn't survive."He wasn't putting up Christmas lights. I was with him that day and I think that was a story that got fed around.""I was there that day, the reason he fell is because of him. We were doing a song for Jerry Ryan who was doing The Green Edge, the cycling team, and I was doing a duet with Vanessa Amorosi.""Ian had the master tapes and he said, 'Can you take these down to Sing Sing as you're going home?" So I left. "He was about to head to Thailand and he probably thought he'd catch some extra rays of sun. He's got a latter cemented into the side of his wall which goes up to a sun deck. He was climbing up there with his mobile phone, his cigarettes and trying to juggle those and lost his balance and fell.""He would have died except his gardener, Joe, happened to be there. It was real touch and go as to whether he was going to survive but he's great now.""It was funny. They (the hospital) said, 'Ian wants to see you in hospital. You cannot talk to him about mobile phones. If he asks for your mobile phone you cannot give it to him. If he asks for drinks you can't go and get him one. Do not talk to him about getting out of hospital.""It was horrifying. I thought I was going to get in there and expected to see Ian sitting in a wheelchair and drinking soup through a straw, but I got in there and there he is sitting with his baseball cap on and his tracksuit reading the paper!""I said, 'Ian, I expected you to be sitting here dribbling, everyone's given me such a hard time!' And he said, 'Oh they're all such pains in the ....' "And they'd said to me, 'You cannot stay any longer than 20 minutes and if he shows any aggravation you have to leave immediately.""My 20 minutes came up and I said I'd better go but he said, 'Don't be ridiculous!" "I ended up staying for two hours.""I was also off to Thailand and flew out the next day. I got to Thailand and I got an email from Amanda Pelman who is Brian Cadd's partner who's great friend of Ian's, and it says, 'What have you done? Where is Ian? You were the last person to see him and now he's disappeared?""After I left, Ian started to figure out how to get out of there because you can't get out of the ward without a special card and the nurses won't let you out.""He conjured this story and told told them, 'I've decided to do physio' which he'd been refusing to do, and they said, 'Oh that's great Ian, when do you want to start, Monday?""He said, 'I want to start now, if you want me to do physio I want to go over and have a look and do it now.'" So they took him.""They got a nurse to take him over and took him down the street and as they got to the street he turned one way and just kept walking.""They couldn't find him!"

Jon Stevens started his singing career in New Zealand at the tender age of 13. After some success in his homeland, he set his sights on Australia, and proceeded to start the chart-topping band Noiseworks. In 1992, he appeared in Jesus Christ Superstar alongside John Farnham, Kate Ceberano and Angry Anderson. The cast recording album was the highest selling album in Australia in 1992, and the production remains one of Australia's most successful musical tours. He briefly fronted INXS, joined the Australian production of Happy Days: The Musical, wrote the theme for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Torch Relay and hosted a reality series on Channel 10. John has just released his new solo album Starlight, produced by Dave Stewart from Eurythmics and featuring Australia's vocal powerhouse Vanessa Amorosi. PLUS Angela Lockwood talks about disconnecting from the tech world and enjoying the beauty of the real world. For more information, head to www.lukeandsusie.com
Casey Barnes played alongside Bryan Adams, Eskimo Joe and Vanessa Amorosi and had a number one song in Europe singing Marco Demark's remake of Tiny Dancer. That was before he hit the stage of Australian Idol in 2009. Since that time, his career has continued to soar and this year has seen him return to Nashville, working alongside Australia's Rick Price, to pull together a whole new album. Though he had the hit in Europe with a dance track, his style is now more Americana – country meets blues meets folk. In this episode, we talk about how his music has taken shape, his family life, and how touring life isn't always all it's cracked up to be. A Facebook post and comment, on the topic of second-hand information, caught Susie's attention recently. So, we tracked down the man behind the comment and discuss the web of rumors and gossip and how to handle it when someone tries to bring you in on them. Mark Holden is a household name in Australia. He’s had more extraordinary careers than I’ve had hot dinners. He’s been a Teen Pop idol, an on-screen soap opera heart throb, a heavyweight songwriter, publisher and manager in L.A., a music manager here in Australia who managed artists like Vanessa Amorosi, a judge on the first five seasons of Australian Idol, a cancer survivor and now a full-time Barrister in the Victorian legal system. You’ll hear that I’m very fond of Mark, he was a great hero of mine and guided me through my first years of extraordinary public exposure - as someone who’d done it all before. We cover a lot of ground here, we get raw and real - and then he tells me about the time he dragged The Hoff out of a fistfight. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
