Celebrations Chatter with Jim McCann
Why connection may be the best medicine | With James Ellis Ph.D.

For years, Dr. James Ellis treated patients who were doing everything they were supposed to do, yet some still weren't getting better. The clinical psychologist noticed something important: The people who struggled most often lacked the strong social connections that others had. That realization changed the way he practiced.  In this episode of Celebrate Your Story, James and I explore why relationships are so fundamental to our physical and emotional health, why our social networks require more attention as we get older, and why men need to be more deliberate about maintaining friendships.   We also talk about one of my favorite pieces of his advice: Don't worry if you're always the one making the call or organizing dinner. A good relationship doesn't have to be perfectly reciprocal to be valuable. Sometimes being the convener is simply the role you play.  James describes relationships as the bedrock of our evolution. I'd put it more simply: We need each other. And in a world where it has become easy to live, work, shop, and entertain ourselves without interacting with others, maintaining our relationships may require more effort than ever.

Here is a detailed episode description for the episode: Prevention is the Best Medicine: Daily Habits for Healthy FeetEpisode Summary With summer heatwaves sweeping the country, caring for our feet is more critical—and more complicated—than ever. In this episode of Caregiver SOS On Air, host Ron Aaron is joined by certified wound specialist physician Dr. Allison Larkin to discuss practical, everyday strategies for avoiding foot injuries, chronic wounds, and serious complications. From the hidden dangers of walking barefoot on scorching surfaces to the unexpected items hiding inside your footwear, Dr. Larkin breaks down why wound care is often misunderstood and how simple, budget-friendly daily habits can keep you—and those you care for—out of the wound clinic. Whether you are managing diabetes, helping an aging loved one with daily hygiene, or just trying to navigate the summer heat safely, this episode delivers essential guidance to protect your health from the ground up. Key Takeaways & Highlights The Three Pillars of Preventative Foot Care: Dr. Larkin outlines the fundamental elements of long-term foot health: good hygiene, supportive shoes, and consistent monitoring. The Summer Barefoot Trap: Walking barefoot outdoors during extreme heat—even for a quick trip across the pool deck—can lead to severe, slow-healing burns on the soles of your feet. Safe Daily Hygiene Practices: Learn the right way to wash and thoroughly dry your feet (especially between the toes) to prevent blisters, fungal infections, and skin breakdown. Plus, discover why plain moisturizers like Vaseline, CeraVe, or Aquaphor work best, and why you should never put moisturizer between your toes. Proper Nail Care & Pedicure Rules: Discover the proper technique for trimming toenails straight across to prevent painful ingrown nails. Dr. Larkin warns against using sharp objects like toothpicks under nails and shares important precautions for individuals with diabetes or peripheral arterial disease. Footwear Essentials: Get expert tips on choosing shoes with a wide toe box and thick, flexible soles. Learn why you should always shop for shoes in the afternoon, break new pairs in slowly, and shake your shoes out before putting them on. Basic Wound First Aid: Understand why wounds actually heal faster and stay safer when kept clean, slightly moist, and covered—debunking the common myth that "airing out" a wound is best. About Dr. Larkin Dr. Allyson Larkin earned her BA Magna Cum Laude in Zoology from Iowa State University and her Medical Degree with honors from Texas A&M University College of Medicine. She is board certified in Family Medicine and Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine and is a Certified Wound Specialist Physician. Her specialty is healing chronic and complicated wounds, which she enjoys because it requires great attention to detail. Hosts Ron Aaron and Carol Zernial, and their guests talk about Caregiving and how to best cope with the stresses associated with it. Learn about "Caregiver SOS" and the "Teleconnection Hotline" programs. Caregiver SOS On Air is a presentation of the WellMed Charitable Foundation. Hey Heal Squad! Today, we are so excited to welcome Full House star and comedian Dave Coulier to the podcast, and this is one of those conversations that will make you laugh, make you think, and maybe even change the way you look at your own health. Dave joins us to share an honest update on his health after being diagnosed with not one, but two completely different cancers in less than two years. He opens up about the emotional highs and lows of treatment, the side effects no one prepares you for, and why, through it all, he refused to let cancer take away his sense of humor. In fact, that outlook started long before his diagnosis with one of his closest friends, Bob Saget, whose dark humor helped teach Dave that sometimes laughter really is the best medicine. But this conversation goes far beyond cancer. Together, Maria and Dave get  into why so many of us wait until a health crisis to start paying attention to our bodies and why Dave now believes prevention—not panic—is one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves. Dave also shares how his diagnosis led him down a rabbit hole of questioning everything—from the food he was eating to the everyday products he was using. That journey eventually inspired AwearMarket, his new marketplace designed to take the guesswork out of finding healthier, less-toxic products for your home and family. One of the most surprising moments? Dave reveals that he had already started cleaning up his diet and reducing inflammation before his cancer diagnosis…which definitely helped his body fight the cancers. It's a powerful reminder that while we can't control everything, the healthy choices we make today are an investment in our future. Enjoy! HEALERS & HEAL LINERS Laughter Really Can Be Medicine: Throughout two cancer diagnoses, Dave made one promise to himself: cancer would never take away his sense of humor. He opens up about how finding moments of joy can be just as important as treating the disease. Small Daily Choices Add Up Over Time: After asking himself, "Why did my body fail me?" Dave began questioning everything—from the foods he ate to the products he used every day. He explains why he believes long-term health is shaped by small, consistent choices and how making gradual changes today can have a lasting impact on your future One Cancer Diagnosis Sparked an Entirely New Mission: That search for answers ultimately inspired AwearMarket, his new marketplace dedicated to helping people make healthier, less-toxic choices without feeling overwhelmed. A short, playful meditation designed to gently unlock laughter from within. Through simple breath, subtle sound, and a relaxed smile, you'll ease the body out of tension and into lightness. This practice doesn't force joy—it creates the conditions for it, inviting a natural sense of humor to emerge. The line between breath and laughter begins to blur, awakening the body's innate rhythm of release. You may find yourself smiling, chuckling, or simply softening. Either way, this is a space to reconnect with levity, to hold your own seriousness more loosely, and to remember that laughter can be a quiet, restorative form of presence.

After personally overcoming rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, diabetes, and obesity, she transformed her practice and launched New Bloom, a personalized functional medicine platform focused on helping women reclaim their health, identity, and vitality. She is also the host of the Dr. P Better Life podcast, now in its fourth year. - New Bloom: mynubloom.com - Podcast: drpbetterlife.com - Instagram: @drmariannepinkston Key Takeaways: Chronic stress and adverse childhood events (ACEs) create a biological environment of inflammation that drives autoimmune disease, cancer, obesity, and metabolic disorders. Survival mode — the state of constantly being in fight-or-flight — is the root cause, not just a symptom, of most chronic disease. Identity is medicine. Changing your body requires changing the story you tell yourself about who you are and what you deserve. Emotional eating, people-pleasing, and overworking are survival mechanisms rooted in childhood experiences — not character flaws. Boundaries are not walls. They are a form of self-love that creates the biological conditions for healing. Dr. Pinkston lost 120 pounds over two years, reversed her diabetes and cancer, and is now an athlete at 57. Functional medicine addresses root causes — stress, identity, lifestyle, nutrition — rather than managing individual symptoms in isolation. Dr. Georgine Nanos is a board-certified family physician based in Encinitas, California, and the North American Medical Director for Exo Mind — the world's most advanced TMS device. She has been practicing medicine for 24 years and pioneered the world's first single-day TMS protocol, publishing the landmark study in 2024. Her clinic, Kind Minds TMS, offers the full spectrum of TMS treatments from performance optimization to treatment-resistant depression. - Website: kindmindstms.com - Instagram: @drgeorginenanos  Dr. Judson Brandeis is a board-certified urologist, men's health specialist, and author of *The 21st Century Man*. Based in Northern California, he has integrated the Exo Mind TMS system into his practice and recently launched Global Men's Wellness — an AI-powered Men's Health large language model trained on curated medical literature. - Website: brandeismd.com - AI Platform: globalmenswellness.com Key Takeaways: TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) uses safe magnetic pulses — no electricity — to stimulate the dorsal lateral prefrontal cortex, the brain's emotional control center.  The traditional 40-day TMS protocol has been condensed into a single day with equal or better outcomes.  Dr. Nanos' published trial showed a 90% response rate and 72% remission rate — more than double the remission rate of antidepressants.  TMS is not just for depression. It treats anxiety, PTSD, burnout, brain fog, insomnia, perimenopausal symptoms, and performance optimization.  The one-day protocol costs approximately $10,000–$12,000 and is not covered by insurance (cash pay only for accelerated protocols).  TMS creates a "window of neuroplasticity" — the brain is most receptive to new patterns immediately after treatment. Dr. Brandeis' personal experience: woke up 15–20% happier, more creative, with greater mental clarity — sustained for months.  Dr. Nanos' Best Medicine: sleep and exercise. From starring in Abbott Elementary, She-Hulk, Scream 6, and The Other Two, to lighting up the stage on Broadway in On Your Feet, Josh has truly done it all, and somehow still makes time for school pickups and rehearsal at 4:30. We love a working dad king!Of course, we had to dive into his wrestling fandom. Josh shares how he grew up idolizing the Ultimate Warrior and why he'd absolutely say yes if WWE ever called. We're already fantasy booking Sheriff Mark with handcuffs at ringside to help The Bellas snag those tag titles. Manifestation activated! And when it comes to comedy, Josh opens up about sharpening his tools on Broadway, honoring great writing, and how the best laughs often come from truth, not improv. He also gets candid about rejection, jealousy, overthinking, and dealing with online hate, dropping wisdom that honestly feels like its own form of best medicine.Between talk of Chinese food therapy, Frosty-and-fries debates, and heartfelt reflections on fatherhood, this episode is funny, grounded, and unexpectedly inspiring. Josh reminds us that comparison is the thief of joy, that overthinking is usually fiction we write in our own heads, and that sometimes the best cure is turning off the noise and going home to the people who love you. Our recent episode on Deshaming Sluttiness inspires a listener to submit a Hookup of the Week about his competition with a friend to see who can fill the pages of their little black books faster. Brian and Judson are then joined by star of stage and screen Jason Veasey, currently co-starring in the new comedy-drama, “Best Medicine,” on Fox and Hulu. Jason talks about the joy of being on the sets of both his current show and “Only Murders in the Building,” his desire to represent gay men our age on screen as sexual beings, and the need for more depictions of queer Black-on-Black love and sex in TV and film. He also gets personal and chats with Brian and Judson about sexual comfort levels, the value he places on sex in his relationship, being in a long-term relationship without living together, reclaiming his sexuality after his HIV diagnosis, sharing the news of his diagnosis with his family, and what it took for him to realize that he's versatile in bed. Stephanie Miller discusses the GOP following their disappointing election performance. She's not just laughing at them, though—she's analyzing their full-blown post-defeat meltdown and figuring out what their frantic finger-pointing means for the rest of us. Looking at the economy, Stephanie draws some alarming, must-know parallels to the 2008 Great Recession, breaking down the recent surge in high-profile layoffs and what it signals for your bottom line. She also tackles President Trump's frankly bananas attempts to deflect blame after the election, putting his recent economic denialism under the comedy-driven microscope it deserves.
