Erin & Elizabeth talk with Gen-X icon Ione Skye (Say Anything, River's Edge, Zodiac), the actress and author of the NYT-bestselling memoir SAY EVERYTHING. Ione's father is the 60s folk wizard and Sunshine Superman, Donovan. But while Donovan did claim Ione's brother Dono as his own, he referred to Ione since birth only as "the girl," only meeting her for the first time when she was by that point a famous teenager. Ione tells us about how his abandonment affected her early romantic relationships with musicians (Anthony Kiedis, Adam Horovitz), what her husband Ben Lee has taught her about consistency, love and fatherhood, and how the road from rejection to reconciliation is paved with self-protection. Ben Lee began his career as a young teenager in the early 90's, in the Australian lo-fi punk band Noise Addict, who were discovered by Sonic Youth and the Beastie Boys. That began an extraordinary career that has been both eclectic and eccentric. Ben has put out over 20 solo albums that have made romantics swoon for multiple generations and catapulted him to national treasure status. But enough of all that, we're here to talk about fwendship! In this episode, Ben talks about being occasionally guilty of fair-weather friendship, of friendship within cults, setting friendships loose, World Expo 88, showbiz superfriends, the necessity for admiration in friendship, friendship in family, and his perpetual search for romance in all things.CONTACTText - 0431 345 145Email - fwendspod@gmail.comMail - PO Box 24144, Melbourne, Vic, 3001RATE AND REVIEWOf course you've already subscribed or followed the show, now we'd love you to leave a rating and a review. John is joined by Ben Lee, Chief Legal Officer of Reddit. They discuss Ben's extensive career as a senior in-house lawyer in several of the most successful tech companies in the world. After earning degrees in physics and economics, Ben worked at IBM's research lab, where he was intrigued by the way lawyers grappled with the impacts of technology on society. Ben then went to law school and began his career as a litigator at a New York law firm but left to work at the Legal Aid Society. Financial realities eventually led him back to private practice and then to a career in-house. At AT&T and NEC, Ben worked closely with pioneering computer scientists and handled complex IP matters involving emerging technologies like machine learning and AI. When he moved to Google, Ben advised on major projects like Chrome, Android, and Google Cloud at very early stages when their success was far from assured. Ben later joined Twitter during its early, fast-paced growth phase, managing litigation, IP, employment, and regulatory issues. He led Twitter's lawsuit against the U.S. government over transparency for national security requests. Later, at Airbnb, Ben tackled challenging regulatory landscapes worldwide, and at Plaid, he advocated for consumers' rights to financial data. At Reddit, Ben now oversees all legal functions for a vast online platform with over 100,000 user-created and moderated communities. Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act is vital to Reddit's success. It provides that online users and platforms are generally not liable for content created by others. Section 230 protects Reddit's content moderation decisions, the decisions of its volunteer community moderators and its individual users. Finally, Ben advises young in-house lawyers to remember that their job is not to just point out all potential legal risks in a project, but to help their teams manage those risks so they can build great products and move companies forward.Podcast Link: Law-disrupted.fmHost: John B. In your season of evangelism, who are you guiding people towards? Pastor Ben continues the Excuse Me series with a powerful message titled, What Have You Heard? Preaching from Matthew 16, he challenges us to recognize and identify Jesus with clarity and conviction. Grab your Bible, notebook, and get ready for this deep word.
My guest today is a Gen X legend and someone I've been a little bit obsessed with ever since I saw her star in the definitive (late) 80s movie, Say Anything. Ione Skye. There was a time when It seemed like if there was a hot young actor - John Cusack, River Phoenix, Keanu Reeves - she got to snog them on screen. (I know, shallow, much.) Ione has spent her life in the centre of the Venn diagram of film, music and celebrity. The daughter of 60s superstar Donovan, she famously dated Red Hot Chilli Peppers' Anthony Keidis finding herself both babysitter and breadwinner at just 16. She followed that with an ill-fated marriage to Beastie Boy Ad-Rock (Adam Horowitz). But there is so much more to Ione than all those male name drops. She has starred in some of the most significant movies of their generation. She has worked with the likes of Sofia Coppola, Chloe Sevigny, Lena Dunham and Madonna. She's written children's books, directed short films and is an accomplished painter. Not to mention podcaster. (She hosts the podcast Weirder Together with her partner, Ben Lee.) Oh, and I do just have to say that as a child she only lived next door to the iconic writer Eve Babitz! Anyway It all adds up to one fascinating tumultuous story. One she's addressed extremely candidly in her new memoir, Say Everything. See what she did there? Ione joined me from LA to talk about growing up in the 80s and 90s, being a nepo baby before nepo babies were a thing, having it all, losing it all and getting some of it back, what she's learnt from her Gen Z daughters and finally coming into herself in her 50s. * You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including Say Everything by Ione Skye and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me. * If you enjoyed this episode and you fancy buying me a coffee, pop over to my page on buymeacoffee.com. • And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com • The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls at Pineapple Production. BEN LEE IS GOING TO DIEBen Lee began his career as a young teenager in the early 90's, in the Australian lo-fi punk band Noise Addict, who were discovered by taste-making artists Sonic Youth and the Beastie Boys. That began an extraordinary career that has been both eclectic and eccentric, and still growing more strange and fascinating each day. Whether collaborating in one-off projects like the Bens (with Ben Folds and Ben Kweller), producing a Grammy award winning music/comedy album for Margaret Cho (“Cho Dependent”), duetting with Sarah Silverman, writing a psychedelic children's musical with American literary legend Tom Robbins, or simply strumming away on his guitar and putting out over 20 solo albums of songs that have made romantics swoon for multiple generations, Ben's career is always (to quote his song “Ache 4 You”) “confusing...but never dull”.As a curious explorer of religion and philosophy, Ben has cultivated a comfortable relationship with mortality - and his experiences as a death midwife have only deepened his understanding of a journey through lived existence. What better person to plan a dream Funeral with? Now, collaborating with his wife, actress Ione Skye, on their company Weirder Together, Lee is supporting other artists in creating bizarre and beautiful content spanning everything from podcasts and music, to events and fanzines, as well as film projects.Website: Ben-Lee.comInstagram: @BenLeeMusicMarieke Hardy Is Going To Die is a podcast made by Marieke Hardy (IG @marieke_hardy).You can follow at IG @GoingToDiePodMusic by Lord Fascinator (IG @lordfascinator)Produced by Darren Scarce (IG @Dazz26)Video edits by Andy Nedelkovski (IG @AndyNeds)Artwork by Lauren Egan (IG @heylaurenegan)Photography by Eamon Leggett (IG @anxietyoptions)With thanks to Amelia Chappelow (IG @ameliachappelow)Camilla McKewen (IG @CamillaLucyLucy)and Rhys Graham (IG @RhysJGraham)Drop an email to mariekehardyisgoingtodie@gmail.comWhilst acknowledging the privilege that comes with having the space to discuss death and mortality, we want to also recognise that discussing these topics can raise some wounds. Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com My guest today is Brad Wood, a producer originally from Chicago where he had Idful Music Corporation - a small but mighty recording studio in Wicker Park. There he recorded albums by bands like Seam, Tar, Shrimp Boat and Eleventh Dream Day. In 1993 he produced Exile In Guyville for Liz Phair which became the catalyst for what became a very long and prosperous career as a producer and mixer. Brad wrapped up the 90's with many debut albums under his belt, including Sunny Day Real Estate‘s Diary, Veruca Salt‘s American Thighs, Placebo's self-titled LP, Placebo, and Ben Lee‘s Grandpaw Would. He also notably produced the Original Broadway Cast Recording for Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Throughout the iconic decade, Brad also worked with bands such as Far, that dog., Menthol, Pete Yorn, and The Smashing Pumpkins' Adore (which peaked at #2 on the Billboard 200 charts). Later Brad relocated to Los Angeles, California, where he built Seagrass Studio where he's tracked and mixed for Say Anything, mewithoutyou, The Bangles, Sherwood, Touché Amoré, and many other artists. I am excited to have Brad back on the podcast again. You can catch his earlier episode RSR095 when he talked about his work in Chicago and moving to LA. Today we will catch up with Brad to see what's new at Seagrass Studio and talk about producing and mixing in Atmos among other things. The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - took a day to absorb the fallout from the news that Washington Athletic Director Troy Dannen would be leaving UW after 167 days on the job to take the same job at Nebraska. And while today is the first day of what is traditionally known as 'March Madness', UW fans have been dealing lately with an entirely different type of madness. Why? Why now? And for what purpose? So many questions, and even a day later many of those questions remain only partially answered. In the first part of the podcast, they talk about their initial reactions to the news, how this will affect things like buyouts moving forward, and also why they think Dannen's move happened now, rather than years from now. There are a number of stories that have surfaced in the last 24 hours since Dannen's departure that have certainly illuminated the situation and helped clarify some of the reasons that may have been leading Dannen out the door after less than six months on the job. After a quick break, most of the rest of the podcast talks about the vacant men's head basketball coaching position, how Dannen's departure fits into the hiring timeline for UW - did he put in enough legwork behind the scenes to allow interim AD Erin O'Connell to push a hire across the line? Will it be Utah State Head Coach Danny Sprinkle, as has been long rumored? Will the AD have to completely reset their list of candidates and go in a different direction entirely? Will they wait until a permanent AD is hired before tackling the process of making the next hire? And where is Will Conroy's place in all of this? Will he come back with an interim tag as part of an eventual move to make him Washington's next head coach? What about Quincy Pondexter's future? Ben Lee's? Mike Hopkins? The guys talk about that, the role Parker Executive Search will have in making UW's next hires. They were the group Washington used in the hiring of Jedd Fisch, their newest deputy AD Haven Fields, and they were also the group responsible for Nebraska's AD search. There's also a quick recruiting update from Scott and we wrap things up with an update on one of our favorite contributors - AANDY - and also comment on Dannen's prepared statement to Washington fans that he posted on social networks as we were wrapping up our show. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a pair of songwriters who broke out in the ‘90s and early 2000s and have had fruitful careers since—and who happen to be old pals—Ben Kweller and Brendan Benson. As you'll hear in this chat, Kweller got his rock life started early, learning guitar as a teenager and hustling hard for gigs in the small Texas town where he grew up. His first band, Radish, got a big record deal while Kweller was still a kid, and while they never exactly blew up, there's definitely some love out there for the band's early records. Kweller went solo in the early 2000s with the classic album Sha Sha, which was an early release on Dave Matthews' record label ATO—and which last year got the deluxe anniversary reissue treatment. He's had a run of great solo records since, and was in a supergroup called The Bens with Ben Folds and Ben Lee. He also started a music collective called The Noise Company, which is a sort of hybrid studio/management/record label. They're having a big blowout at this year's South by Southwest, so if you're down there, it's at the Mohawk on March 15. Check out a little bit of a great Kweller song right here, “American Cigarettes.” Brendan Benson, as you'll hear in this chat, is a bit older than Kweller, but he's had a similarly remarkable career. Benson's debut solo album came out back in 1996, but if you're looking for a place to start with his driving rock songs, check out 2002's Lapalco. Benson has eight solo albums to his credit, including 2002's Low Key, but he might be best known as the co-frontman of The Raconteurs, along with his old friend, bandmate, and Detroit-area native Jack White. Check out a great Benson track for earlier days right here, “What I'm Looking For,” and catch him at the Noise Company showcase this weekend as well. These two old pals sound delighted to be chatting, and they jump right into an unplanned episode of Car Talk—Kweller, as it turns out, might get himself a Tesla Cybertruck. They also talk a lot of the spark of creativity that led them to their chosen careers, and they each mention the embarrassing first songs they ever wrote. Kweller tells a great story about hearing “Smells Like Teen Spirit” for the first time as well, and Benson admits that The Three Stooges have had a huge influence on how he harmonizes. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Ben Kweller and Brendan Benson for chatting. Today's episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. Buckle up ALBC babies, we're about to go all over the map through Hollywood, the music industry, Australia, and a couple decades of cult-hopping. In fact, it's so epic that (picture this) we are holding an invisible boombox over our heads outside your window while blaring Peter Gabriel, asking you to listen. Got the picture? Okay cool: Because we're chatting with Ione Skye and Ben Lee, married podcasters that you may know from their hilarious Weirder Together podcast. Or maybe you know him as a prolific singer-songwriter, and her from the high school of your John Hughes teen cinema dreams. Or maybe, just maybe, you were in a cult with them at some point. It's not statistically improbable because they've been in a few culty situations, from chasing Qigong, to following Gurus and slinging DoTerra essential oils. Heads up: This isn't our regular format. It's more of a Rom-Com than the stuff of True Crime, but these two are thoughtful and funny as hell on the subject of loving people through—and out of—cults. And we're always interested in hearing from people who've dabbled and ducked out before things got too fucky. Lots of cultiverse easter eggs in this one, from David Lynch to QAnon, Theranos to Sean Penn, Rick Ruben to Ruby Tuesday's–just kidding about that last one. If you're a cult nerd, this one will be mother's milk. Put on your New Year's jammies, and enjoy. NOTES Ben Lee is a musician, singer/songwriter, producer, DJ DadBod, and professional adventurer. Ione Skye is an actor, director, painter, and author. According to this story, Skye will “Say Everything” in her new memoir soon to be published. Together, Ben and Ione run a creative production company where they do podcasts, events, film, fanzines, and quote ”make stuff, curate stuff, and celebrate stuff” including their own Podcast Weirder Together. @benleemusic on IG, fb, twitter, TikTok @ioneskyelee on IG, @ioneskye1 twitter, @ioneskyeofficial TikTok ROLLING STONE ARTICLE on Ben Lee Also… Let it be known far and wide, loud and clear that… The views and opinions expressed on A Little Bit Culty do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the podcast. We had the pleasure of interviewing Josh Radnor over Zoom video!Singer-songwriter, actor, writer and director Josh Radnor has shared his new single “Learning,” a meditative exploration into embracing one's full range of emotions as a testament to true vulnerability. The new single will appear on Eulogy: Volume I, due out November 17 as the first installment in his double-album solo debut Eulogy: Volume I + II. Radnor spoke with People about “Learning” and his upcoming album, which they hailed as “an instructional booklet of sorts put to the sound of beautiful music.” Additionally, today he appeared on LIVE with Kelly and Mark to perform the new single and discuss his music career.“‘Learning' is my favorite song that Kyle Cox and I wrote together,” shares Radnor. “I think a lot of adults, especially men, have to do a kind of remedial class in the emotions they were once taught were weak and inappropriate to feel, namely loneliness, fear, and sadness. This is a song about reclaiming the right to feel the full range of feelings.”“Learning” follows the “devastatingly intimate” (Paste) “NYC” and rebellious lead album single “Red,” which Entertainment Weekly praised, noting, “Josh Radnor has taken his heartache and turned it into a milestone in his music career.” Produced and engineered by Radnor's Nashville friends Jeremiah Dunlap, Cory Quintard, and Kyle Cox, Eulogy: Volume I exudes the unquestionable sturdiness of timeless, storytelling-driven Americana, boasting anthemic melodies laced with electronic elements and idiosyncratic twists. Many of the songs on the album serve as goodbyes of sorts: a letting go of people, places, emotions, and ideas.Throughout Eulogy: Volume I, Radnor's grounded and intimate songwriting style blends the timeless art of existential questioning with relatable, down-to-earth narratives. Backed by sometimes rowdy, sometimes sparse instrumentation, there's an alluring sense of vulnerability woven throughout the album, each track well-attuned to the emotion that sparked its creation.Songwriting is nothing new to Radnor, who began making music in 2013 with friend and celebrated Aussie artist, Ben Lee. The pair released two albums as Radnor & Lee – a self-titled debut in 2017, followed by sophomore album Golden State in 2020. Then, in 2021, he dropped his debut solo EP, titled One More Then I'll Let You Go, which was praised by American Songwriter for its “clever craftsmanship” and “certain purity.”We want to hear from you! Ben Lee is a musician from Australia now in LA. We talk about New Wave, having his mind blown on a flight to Australia, trusting Tegan and Sara's taste, a punk-rock duet, why Ben covered this record, the music industry changes so why resist it, would you take the Hyundai sponsorship, would you open for Maroon 5?, New Wave is a historical document, clunky sentences as catchy choruses, “Be my Baby,” Trent Reznor, Butch Vig, Nic Johns, fan backlash, and viewing your life as an art project.
