Australian icon Tex Perkins takes us through his legendary career, from The Cruel Sea & The Beasts recent works, to wild ARIA award nights, his atrocious habits with vinyl records, reissuing his works on vinyl and lots more. Topics Include: Tex Perkins rehearsing with The Cruel Sea for upcoming gigs. Bringing back "deep cuts" from 30 years ago. Band already prepared the songs before his arrival. Feels like "personal karaoke" returning to old material. Gains fresh perspective on older songs with time. Sometimes writes songs instinctively, not from personal experience. Song "Hard For You" channeled rage he hadn't experienced. Recorded with Kid Congo Powers from Bad Seeds. ARIA Awards incident clarified - didn't stab anyone. Hit someone with a glass at an after-party. Molly Meldrum was present during the altercation. Lived with Jules Normington of Phantom Records. Paid rent by washing Jules' dishes. Had access to Jules' extensive record collection. Especially enjoyed 60s punk and garage rock records. Met John Foy, who was pedantic about record handling. Music scattered across many different record labels. Controls some albums, but not all. Universal owns The Cruel Sea and some Beasts albums. Axeman's Jazz recorded and mixed in six hours. Recent album "Ultimo" recorded differently - basic tracks then laptop. Modern recording allows more experimentation without studio costs. Prefers vinyl album lengths around 18-20 minutes per side. Three Legged Dog being released on three vinyl sides. Spanish reissues were "handshake deals" with unclear accounting. Appreciates unashamedly Australian content in newer bands. Newer bands don't hide their Australian accents. Never experienced censorship of his music. Had releases in different regions without his knowledge. No accounting from Big Time label after bankruptcy. Performed with The Legendary Stardust Cowboy in 1985. "Ledge" known for having "world's worst record" - Paralyzed. Backed Ledge with James Baker, Spencer Jones, Lachlan McLeod. Ledge progressively stripped during his performance. Threw Frisbee paper plates with drawings into the audience. Wondering what ever happened to Don Walker and Cold Chisel? Or maybe what songs Don wrote for the band and what his solo stuff is like? Check this out ... Don Walker, hailed as one of Australia's finest songwriters, has built an enduring legacy through his work with Cold Chisel, his solo career, and his literary pursuits. Born in Ayr, Queensland, in 1951, Don spent his formative years on a sugarcane farm, an environment that shaped his deep appreciation for storytelling and the Australian landscape. Despite excelling academically and earning a physics degree from the University of Queensland, music remained his true calling. He began writing songs in his teenage years, influenced by country, blues, and the emerging rock 'n' roll sounds of the 1960s. In 1973, while living in Adelaide, Don co-founded Cold Chisel with Ian Moss, Phil Small, Steve Prestwich, and Jimmy Barnes. As the band's principal songwriter and keyboardist, Don crafted songs that resonated with the Australian experience, blending gritty realism with poetic lyricism. Cold Chisel's music, powered by Don's writing, captured the struggles, triumphs, and heartbreaks of ordinary lives. Tracks like Khe Sanh, a tale of a Vietnam veteran's post-war alienation, and Flame Trees, a nostalgic reflection on love and small-town life, became Australian anthems. Cold Chisel rose to prominence in the late '70s and early '80s, releasing landmark albums such as East and Circus Animals. Don's songwriting was praised for its depth and sophistication, setting the band apart in the Australian rock scene. Despite their massive success, internal tensions led to the band's breakup in 1983. Their farewell concert, The Last Stand, cemented their place in Australian music history. After Cold Chisel's breakup, Don turned his focus to solo projects. He formed the Catfish, releasing the album Unlimited Address in 89, which showcased his ability to blend rock, blues, and jazz influences. He later pursued a solo career under his own name, releasing We're All Gunna Die (1995), Cutting Back (2006), and Hully Gully (2013). These albums highlighted his distinctive narrative voice and ability to explore the darker corners of human experience with wit and insight. Beyond music, Don ventured into literature, publishing Shots in 2009, a memoir that offered a vivid and unflinching look at his life and career. The book was praised for its raw honesty and lyrical prose, further cementing his reputation as a master storyteller. Cold Chisel reunited several times, releasing new music and touring to the delight of their loyal fan base. Don's role in the band remained central, as he continued to pen songs that connected with audiences across generations. His collaborations with other artists, including Slim Dusty, Troy Cassar-Daley, and Tex Perkins, underscored his influence on Australian music. Don Walker's career spans decades of creative output, from iconic anthems to introspective solo works and literary achievements. His ability to capture the essence of Australian life through his art has made him a cultural icon and a revered figure in the nation's musical and storytelling traditions. Don joins us this week to share his incredible story. If you have a comment, query or suggestion for a future guest, please get in touch with me through my website I hope you enjoy this episode!

Dive in to Triple M's latest gig review, featuring the iconic Beasts of Bourbon's unforgettable performance at the Metro Theatre in Sydney. Despite the dreary weather, the legendary band brought their unmistakable grunt to the stage, thrilling fans with a night of raw energy and timeless tracks. In this special episode, our host Row dives deep into the heart of the show, starting from the moment Tex Perkins, with his characteristic swagger, led the band through a set list that promised—and delivered—an exceptional rock experience. This episode isn't just a gig review; it's a tribute to the enduring spirit of The Beasts, who, against the backdrop of personal battles and the bittersweet realities of life, showcased their unparalleled talent and commitment to rock 'n' roll. With the original lineup of Tex Perkins, James Baker, Boris Sudjovic, Kim Salmon, and Charlie Owen taking the stage, the event marked a poignant moment in the band's history, celebrating their journey and the indelible mark they've left on the music world. Row captures the essence of the night, from the high-energy performances of "I Don't Care About Nothing Anymore" and "Saturated" to a bold cover of The Rolling Stones' "Cocksucker Blues," culminating in the rousing finale, "Ten Wheels for Jesus." The Beasts' reputation for raucous live shows and their notoriety for debaucherous tales were all on full display, proving once again that rock 'n' roll isn't just music—it's a lifestyle.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Interview by Kris PetersAustralian blues/rock outfit Beasts Of Bourbon have been a mainstay of the Aussie music scene for over 40 years, blending a blues-infused swagger with sleazy rock and tonnes of attitude to create a musical aura that is as much about the musicians who make up the band as it is the music itself.Originally formed with James Baker on drums (ex-Hoodoo Gurus, The Scientists), Spencer P. Jones on guitar (The Johnnys), Tex Perkins on vocals (Dum Dums), Kim Salmon on guitar and Boris Sujdovic on bass guitar (both ex-The Scientists), the Beasts Of Bourbon went through several line-up changes over the years, with Tex Perkins and Jones being the only regular contributors. After disbanding in 1985 following their debut album The Axeman's Jazz it seemed the music of Beasts Of Bourbon would be lost into the channels of Australian history but they reformed just two years later and released a second album Sour Mash the following year.Several albums followed, culminating in 2007s Little Animals before Beasts Of Bourbon disbanded once more, seemingly for good.2013 saw a couple of select 30th anniversary shows before another slide into the unknown until 2019 when the band re-emerged under the shortened name of Beasts. After a new album Still Here came out in 2019 Beasts went back into slumber, resurfacing last year for 40th anniversary celebrations, with the response being so overwhelmingly positive that the band are on the cusp of undertaking a six-date nation tour with the intention of taking their music and legacy even further than the two shows last year allowed.HEAVY caught up with guitarist Kim Salmon to find out more."It has been a while, really, since we've done any touring in earnest with this band," he nodded. "It was just before the pandemic, so probably four years. We did a couple of shows last year with our original drummer James Baker, and we recorded that and we were so excited about that recording that we thought we'd take it out on the road. We're going to actually release some of this stuff. This is a beauty."We mention that HEAVY is a big fan of live albums, to which Salmon replied, "me too. There's been some good ones over the years. There's also been some less than good ones, but this one I think is… we were gonna call it… Tex and I were talking about it (laughs) and throwing titles around, and we thought how about The Best Live Album Ever Recorded or The Best Live Album Ever, but I had this thing… like there's Slade Alive and Kiss Alive, so I thought why not Beasts Alive? So we're putting that out through a French label called Beast Records. But that won't be out until September, I think. We've got a five track 12" that will only be available at the gig and that's some tracks taken from that recording."In the full interview, Kim talks more about the tour and what to expect, if he still enjoys touring after so much time on the road, the enduring success of Beasts and why, the rocky road to success, changing the band name from Beasts Of Bourbon to Beasts and why, their debut album The Axeman's Jazz and his thought of it 40 years later, future plans and more.

"I've not played Night At The Barracks before and it sounds like a really great event. I love playing outdoor gigs and it just sounds beautiful. Manly is great, I played there back in the day but it's been a while."We turn our focus to The Rolling Stones Review and what to expect."It's a group of us - Tex Perkins, Tim Rogers and myself in this particular revue," Adalita explained. "We have had Phil Jamieson in the past and Sarah McLeod as well, but for this particular one it will be myself, Tex and Tim. We just get together and bang out some Stones classics. There's a lot of Sticky Fingers songs and alot of classics as well. It's just so much fun to do. I've always loved the Stones and playing besides Tex and Tim is just a joy. They're amazing. We have such a great time and the band is incredible. He also co-wrote The Whitlams' No Aphrodisiac which won an ARIA for Song of the Year in 1998 - as well as writing the Tex, Don and Charlie song Fake That Emotion, with Tex Perkins. Plus, he wrote Chunky Chunky Air Guitar, too.

For many, Tex Perkins is something of a blend of man, myth and enigmatic raconteur. To others, he's a bit of a dark horse, which just happens to be just one of the celebrated bands he's been a part of. Others include the Beasts of Bourbon, The Cruel Sea and one third of Tex, Don and Charlie and TnT, a collaboration with You Am I's Tim Rogers. Now, Tex has joined forces with the celebrated bluesman Matt Walker to form The Fat Rubber Band whose album Other World will be released in 2023. It is a great pleasure to welcome to The Good Stuff for the first time, Tex Perkins . . .
With a musical career that spans 40 years and six ARIA awards, Tex Perkins is an Australian icon. Apart from the fantastic stories he shares about The Beasts of Bourbon, The Cruel Sea and various other music projects he has been a part of, he speaks about his love of Melbourne culture and history, and the important role he played in saving one of St Kilda's most historic buildings. Tex Perkins is one of the finest and fiercest frontmen ever to stalk a stage, and the very definition of an artist who follows his instincts wherever they take him. He first made his name in Sydney in the '80s when he formed the primal rock band The Beasts Of Bourbon, but he had his greatest commercial success with The Cruel Sea, who for a while in the early to mid-'90s were one of Australia's biggest bands. Since then he's released many great albums with multiple projects, the latest being The Fat Rubber Band. This interview is a lot of fun and contains stories of rioting crowds, police run-ins, and the conclusion of a decades-long saga involving an ARIA Award, a bin, and a man named Ernie.
After being delayed since last year due to the dreaded Spicy Cough, Australia's newest – and Aussie bands only – festival Uncaged is finally within sight of the first show in Sydney on April 23.Uncaged features an eclectic collection of bands, covering everything from rock to punk to metal and bringing them all together under one banner to provide a diverse line-up of music that will have something to please everyone.Wolfmother, You Am I, Magic Dirt, The Superjesus, Killing Heidi, Tex Perkins and Shihad head the one day festival which will visit Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne, as well as a host of local bands such as Twelve Foot Ninja, Bodyjar, Tumbleweed, 28 Days, The Hard-Ons and more.Melbourne heavy rock outfit El Colosso are flying the flag for all things rock, with vocalist Matt Cooper taking time out from signing autographs to chat with HEAVY.DISCLAIMER: ENGAGE HUMOUROUS SIDE OF YOUR BRAIN BEFORE CONTINUING. COOPS IS WHAT IS COMMONLY KNOWN AS AN AUSSIE LARRIKAN AND ANYTHING HE SAYS SHOULD BE TAKEN WITH A GRAIN OF SALT OR A TABLESPOON OF SUGAR…After previous late aborted efforts to get the El Colossus train rolling as part of Uncaged the first show is less than seven sleeps away so are the band allowing themselves to get excited or are they still wary that the threat of the big C still looms large over the world? I don't like to be pessimistic but in reality anything could happen…"You know what, you're right,” Coops agreed. “Anything can happen. Let me just tow the corporate line for a while and say it's gonna be incredible and it's gonna be huge and it's about time that we actually started to get out there for festivals. Full credit to Danny Bazzi who has really put his name on the line to organise this. It's chopped and it's changed. COVID has not been kind to the industry to begin with, but I don't really see anyone else in the industry doing what Danny is doing with Silverback and he's actually prepared to take a lot of flak for it. Hats off to him mate, seriously. He's got balls, and what could be more attractive than a man with very big balls?"Another aspect where festival organisers are ahead of the game is their decision to take most of the line-up to each city rather than chop and change the roster depending on location. It shows confidence in the ability and drawing power of individual bands and is something that surely must increase the confidence of localized outfits, knowing the people behind the scenes have faith in their performance."Honestly, we're a pretty confident band to begin with,” Coops replied, tongue firmly planted in cheek. “It's funny. I actually had someone that I work with who had no idea that I play in a band - which is funny considering how much ink I have on my body and all that kind of thing - and she said that she had listened to some of the music and she couldn't understand why we weren't bigger and I could have gone into the whole spiel about the state of the music industry and all that kind of thing but it's actually something that we get a lot. People that take the time to listen to it often come back and say how come you guys aren't doing more stuff? Well, you know, that's the game. The thing that we really do, that we can really... not rest laurels on... but where we get our confidence from, is playing live. We are the best live band in the world, and I don't mind that getting out. If anyone that plays in a band doesn't think that about their own band, then why fucken play live? I know that really we're not the best but I like to think that we are. At least that we're up there (laughs)."In the full interview, Coops goes into greater details on why El Colosso are amongst the best bands in the world (and almost convinces us that they are in the process), what sorts of things a band can take out of playing festivals such as Uncaged, how important home grown festivals are for the future of Australian music, survival tips to make sure you are still standing for the final band, El Colosso's sound and where it comes from, future plans and more.

I was like, let me ask the guys, and then he said do you want to just play Sydney or do you want to do all of them? And I said, is that an option? Of course, we want to do all of them, so it came out of nowhere but Danny has always been a big fan of Molly and what we do, and Danny and I have quite a few musical similarities so we always bonded over that."The lineup of bands covers many genres, with the diversity of music a main feature of Uncaged. We press Cateris on what he thinks Molly & The Krells bring to the festival."For diversity I reckon,” he shrugged “From memory there's not a lot of poppy, punky bands that are on the bill and I think it adds for a little diversity and a modern touch to what's going on in that lineup. Not to say the other bands are old but in terms of what's happening these days there's just a handful of acts. It's good to have a bit of youth and some young bloods on the lineup."In the full interview, Blake talks about the bands he is looking forward to playing with, what the band will take out of performing alongside some heavyweights, where he sees Uncaged heading in the future, tips on lasting the day, what we can expect from their set, whether the band will be playing any new songs, their last single Silver & Gold and the response it received from Rolling Stone, future plans and more.

It's been so long. I wanted to play big time in 2020 but that was off the table, so I'm more than dying to get back on stage."W press further and ask whether he is more excited, nervous, r anxious about getting back out on stage again which brought a smile to Stevenson's face."All of the above,” he laughed. “We've got a new lineup of musicians so we've been doing a lot of practicing in preparation. It's been such a long time since we've been on stage, so definitely nervous, but excited. I'm sure it's going to be great."In the full interview, Rohan discusses the diverse line-up and where I Built The Sky fit in, the importance of homegrown festivals, who he is most looking forward to seeing, tips on how to last the festival without peaking too early, the possibility of new music being played at the shows, upcoming album The Quiet Place Away, future plans and more.

It was Lisa's birthday and did we have a surprise for her in the shape of Tex Perkins! The Bunch also got the latest on the NSW floods from Sunrise host, Natalie Barr before Ryan Daniels went through all the Round 1 footy results from the weekend. Everyone deserves having Tex Perkins breathily singing to them for their birthday. Especially Lisa.
Band It About - Proudly Supporting Live Music "Podcast Series"
Adelaide born drummer John Yacka joins me this week to discuss his career. John's first major original band was 'Ironhorse' who began performing in 1980, and within four years had won a reputation as one of Adelaide's most devoutly supported acts. The bands first major gig was on November 30th 1984 when they supported 'Deep Purple' at Memorial Drive during DP's "Perfect Strangers" Tour. Despite their popularity around the country, they were unable to get signed by a major label. John discusses getting knocked back by Michael Gudinski's promotions manager for Mushroom Records Michelle Higgins, due to the fact that she didn't like the look of the band, and didn't think that they would be a good fit for the label. When the band released it's first self financed album in 1986 it became an enduring chart hit. The band set attendance records at their live performances and also surprised the critics when their debut album “Lost Weekend” soared up the commercial airplay charts with a Number 5 album locally and number 54 on the National Charts (Kent Report). Through constant touring throughout Australia, this band earned a reputation nationally and shared the stage as support to a variety of International musicians – BB King, Deep Purple, Joe Walsh, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Johnny Winter & Canned Heat. After a ten year span key member David Stone left for a spell and Ironhorse took a break. The rest of the members continued to tour under the name of “The Hurricanes” and eventually released an Album under the guise of 'Cosmic Desert' with James Burchell on main vocals. More recently the band has reverted back to the Ironhorse flag for a couple of reunion shows. The most watched video on my Band It About YouTube channel is Ironhorse performing the "Train Song" at the first reunion show, which was held at the Para Hills Community Club. Here is the link to that video: IronHorse "Train Song" YouTube ‘Cosmic Storm’ launched its debut album “Nobody’s Fool” at the Adelaide Festival Centre, and to an extent also launched the band. They have open for international acts such as Deep Purple in 2006, Status Quo, and Paul Stanley at the iconic ‘Thebarton Theatre’, as well as supporting other great Aussie music legends. Cosmic Storm created interest on the US music market with their “Nobody’s Fool" album. The band had concerns that the variety of material on the album may have worked against them in the US, but it became an asset, as it was the diversity of the music on the album that stood out above other choices. Lily and the Drum is a bluesy, roots, rock & soul duo featuring vocalist, guitarist Lily Higgins, and John on percussion, harmonica & backing vocals. Their shows have been described as “Honest, raw and energetic” and “A guitar and drum duo with an exciting rich melodic sound." Following the success of their debut album “Nobody Just Like Me”, along with their subsequent albums "Welcome Change", "Buried in Blue" and "This Is Right Now", the duo has constantly toured throughout Australia, until having to cancel last year due to C-19. They have performed at numerous Music Festivals throughout Australia, opening for high profile artists such as ‘The Black Sorrows’, ‘Mental as Anything’ and ‘Tex Perkins. They captured the attention of the music community with four of their releases making the Top 25 on the Australian Blues and Roots National Airplay Charts. John has kindly allowed me to use 2 of his songs for this interview, "Midnite Confusion" by Ironhorse and "No More" by Lily And The Drum. Seja talks to her guest Tex Perkins (Beasts of Bourbon, The Cruel Sea) about the juxtaposition of being a consumer of music and a music maker. They chat about Tex’s new online show called ‘The Show’ and how it has created a vehicle to build and support his musical community. Tex tells Seja about missing live performance, making music at home, homeschooling and past and present collaborations. They chat about the legacy of band mates Brian Hooper and Spencer P. Jones while reflecting on the band’s heavy lifestyle and the subsequent consequences. Tex’s strange show story was illustrated by Tony Giacca (@tonyguitarnerd). After the accidental success of the first Big Day Out in 1992, the festival grew quickly.
The Big Day Out expands quickly and becomes a national touring circus. Every music fan wants to go and every artist wants to play, with many bands treating the tour like a holiday.
In 1991 Australian music promoter Ken West had an idea for a one-day music festival. He called it the Big Day Out.
What if Nick Cave or Mark Lanegan decided to record an album of Bob Marley, ZZ Top, War, and Slim Harpo covers? That's the question posed by the 1993 album The Honeymoon Is Over by The Cruel Sea, an instrumental blues and surf band from Australia that added Beasts of Bourbon frontman Tex Perkins to create a weird and oddly compelling album. Somehow, that combination managers to come together better than we could have ever expected, as the players involved completely buy into the swampy grooves with organ stabs, lurching bass lines and more. It may not be for everyone, and we may not even agree on it completely, but it's definitely worth a spin to reorient your understanding that the 90s weren't just grunge, pop-punk, industrial rock, etc. Songs In This Episode: Intro - Delivery Man 5:27 - Black Stick 14:36 - Naked Flame 21:48 - Woman With Soul Outro - Better Than Love Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. It is forty years since super ghoul Alice Cooper first toured Australia and he is back downunder – doing a run of dates with Ace Frehley as support act. On episode 79 of The Australian Rock Show, we celebrate the tour by cranking some covers, performed by local artists. We rock, we rant, we recall past rock n roll memories. The guillotine is on board the space ship so let the countdown begin ! Music by: Asteroid B-612, Radio Birdman, Alice Cooper, Tex Perkins, Ace Frehley, Smelly Tongues, Girl Monstar
Tex Perkins is one of the most charismatic frontmen in Aussie rock history. Before his Tex, Don and Charlie show this Friday night at The Prince, this morning Tex joined Blackers for Breakfast. Dan the Internut didn't offer us an App of the Week but still had some valuable advice for tech-heads & it warmed Blackers heart to hear the news that bald men are more confident and attractive...

This week on Breakfasters, Geraldine talks about her trip to the dentist and Tex Perkins came in to discuss his new memoir "Tex". They also talk about gross food caught in people's teeth and gums, Museums Victoria's Simon Hinkley came to the studio to talk about Japanese giant hornets, and director Jeff McLean came in to talk about the new film "Jungle" - on for the opening night of Melbourne International Film Festival. With Sarah Smith, Jeff Sparrow, and Geraldine Hickey.
For Episode 30 of Love That Album, I’m joined by Tim Merrill to discuss the second album by the supergroup Tex, Don and Charlie, “All Is Forgiven”. Tex is Tex Perkins, ex-lead singer of Beasts of Bourbon and The Cruel Sea. Don is Don Walker, songwriter for Cold Chisel, Catfish and his current project the Suave Fucks (the best band name EVER). Charlie is Charlie Owen, guitarist extraordinaire to a myriad of projects, but probably most famous for his involvement with the Divynyls. These three gents (along with support from Shane Walsh, Garrett Costigan and the Dirty Three’s Jim White) have put together two brilliant albums of bluesy, country-esque songs with tales of murder, infidelity, spiders on the dunny (look it up) and the sort of activities that listeners to Silva and Gold podcast would appreciate on a night in. Tex and Don know how to weave compelling stories within their lyrics. The songs are simple but with melodies and arrangements that are perfect and won’t leave your head. Think of latter day Tom Waits ballads and you have an idea what this is about. Tim and I have a great old time discussing this album and a swag of other things. He has brilliant insight into music, is a great conversationalist, and it was an absolute pleasure having him on the show again. Once again, Eric Reanimator presents another great “An Album I Love” segment. This time he discusses Drivin’ and Cryin’s “Mystery Road”. A show highlight.
