Episode 189: End of Summer Special 2025 (Part 1) - The Power Station & Bananarama In the United States, the Labor Day weekend marks the unofficial end of summer. Brian and Sarah just aren't ready to say goodbye to summer yet, so over the holiday weekend, they recorded a couple of episodes featuring songs that invoke the feeling of summer. Each episode in this mini-series will feature one song chosen by Brian and one chosen by Sarah. The first song up for discussion is the only one without the word “Summer” in the title. However, there's no question that it makes you think of summer and other sultry situations. Sarah selected the 1985 hit “Some Like It Hot” from supergroup The Power Station. Sarah shares chart information and reviews for the song, and she also explains the origin of the supergroup and the recording of the song. Brian is quite enthusiastic about Sarah's choice and shares memories of purchasing the album on cassette and watching the video for “Some Like It Hot” many times back in the day. As discussion turns to the video, both hosts can't contain their amusement at some of the promo's elements; Sarah even provides a bulleted list of the more notable features. To wrap up the discussion on “Some Like It Hot,” Sarah shares a bit of ‘extra credit' information about the song's use in some network television promotions, back in 1985 but also in the 2020s! Then it's time to move on to Brian's selection. His choice is “Cruel Summer” by British girl group Bananarama (NOT a certain American solo artist). Brian also provides ‘the usual' information such as chart positions, reviews, the writing and recording of the song, and his personal history. Discussion of the “Cruel Summer” video reveals a common thread—or should we say line?—between the songs in this episode: cocaine! There's also a brief James Bond reference made, although it's from Sarah, rather than Brian! The episode wraps up with Brian sharing a recent review, which are always read aloud on the show, and always very much appreciated by both hosts. Rob Janicke in conversation with David Eastaugh https://www.robjanicke.com/ HAVE I GOT A LITTLE STORY FOR YOU... The year was 1984. I was eleven years old and popular music was in a state of confusion. Along with songs by artists I liked such as Van Halen, Prince, Quiet Riot, Duran Duran, Billy Idol, and The Police, Top 40 radio constantly played songs from bands or artists that didn't quite do it for me. Apologies to Kenny Loggins, Phil Collins, Bananarama, Wang Chung, and Ray Parker Jr. Due to the divorce of my parents and telling my mom that I was so unhappy that I no longer wanted to live, I was now a couple of years into therapy. It was around this time that I really began to find solace in music. The mid to late '80s gave me hope. Rap, punk rock, and alternative music befriended me at a time when I needed them the most. A mixtape from 1989, courtesy of a high school friend, opened my soul to the music that would change my life forever- the gritty sound of grunge. I know that this experience is not unique to me or my life. History has shown that millions of Gen X kids who were going through some heavy times in the late '80s and early '90s, found comfort in the grunge and alternative music and culture that came first from Seattle, then the world. Music can save lives; we are proof of that. This book and that sentiment is for the SLACKER in all of us. - Rob Janicke, author of Slacker
Joining me today is Simon Merry. With over 25 years of experience Simon Merry is one of the UK's most in demand drummers. His style and professionalism has been sought after over the years for touring and recording by such artists as: George Michael, Ronan Keating, Boy George, Natalie Imbruglia, Gene Pitney, Olly Murs, Sophie Ellis Bextor, One Direction, Gary Kemp, Paul Young, Boyzone, Bananarama, Go West and Rick Astley. Join us for a fascinating conversation as we pick through some of the amazing highlights of his remarkable career so far. We of course talk about his gig with the legend that is Rick Astley (also a mean drummer as many of you will have seen) Simon also tells us how he got the Gene Pitney gig as a teenager, Simons dad was Gene's musical director and offerd the gig to Simon, not without a proper auduition first though, so certainly no favours and he had to and indeed did deliver the goods until Pitneys death in 2006. Simon, thank you for an absoloutely fascinating conversation! www.simonmerry.com

Cruel Summer é uma das primeiras músicas que me lembro de ouvir das Bananarama. A letra fala do calor de verão nas ruas e de abandono ou solidão. E o som pop da altura, a mistura perfeita para esta música. Bananarama | Greatest hits collection (LP) | Cruel Summer | 1984/88

Phil Harding had his hands in as many hits in the 80s/90s as anyone you care to mention. We will only concern ourselves with the better decade as we look into his career as producer/engineer and mixer.1. THE EARLY YEARS (Pre-1980-83)How Phil got into the business in the 70s, working with the likes of Gerry Rafferty (Baker Street!), The Walker Brothers (No Regrets!) and The Clash (White Man in Hammersmith Palais!), etc.Phil moves into the 80s with KIlling Joke and a very unique contribution to Sign of The Times by The Belle Stars. There is discussion on the differences (and similarities) between mixing pop and rock.2. MATT BIANCO/BASIA (1984-88)Working with Peter Collins leads to engineering Matt Bianco's first album which leads to Phil producing the follow up and mixing Basia's first solo LP. Through Peter connections are made with Pete Waterman.General chat on Phil's approach to mixing a track.3. STOCK AITKEN AND WATERMAN (PT 1) (1983-87)Phil enters the world of SAW. Talk of who did what within the team and experiences with Lamont Dozier, Princess, Mel & Kim and early Rick Astley.Further talk on who had "Woolworth's ears" and why SAW didn't produce Pet Shop Boys.4. DEAD OR ALIVE (1986-88)Let's face it, this section is almost exclusively about You Spin Me Round, the first SAW number one and an iconic 80s hit.5. BANANARAMA (1986-88)Working on Venus, Bananarama wanted the Spin-Me-Round hi NRG treatment, leading to a number of massive pop hits. Also discussed is the Bananarama vocal approach and how it was decided who at the Hit Factory worked on what.EITHER/OR | Does Phil have the Terminator listen to Prince on his ghettoblaster or Robocop listen to MJ on his walkman?Phil can be found Website: philhardingmusic.comTwitter: @phardingmusicFacebook: Phil Harding80sography@gmail.comSend us a text

Welcome to our podcast where we discuss and deliberate over memoirs and biographies found in thrift shops. This is a great way to do things as we are not choosing who to read about. We may not be fans of the person, we may never have heard of the person and we never know who we are going to find next...There are only 2 rules to this podcast. The book has to be found in a thrift shop and we are not allowed to talk about the book until we press record, which is sometimes agonising. We have lots of episodes coming up so if you find yourself enjoying our podcast, please be sure to subscribe to be among the first to hear about each episode.

PART 1 of a 2-part BEST OF compilation of Karl Pilkington's ROCKBUSTERS (a cheap knockoff of Blockbusters) from the Xfm Ricky Gervais Show with Stephen Merchant. Not only was this one of Karl's longest running features (along with Monkey News), but it was also voted by fans as his greatest XFM feature of all time. Karl Pilkington gives a cryptic clue (it's usually nonsense) and the initials of a famous band or artist (he sometimes gets the initials wrong), and listeners either call, or as the feature developed (unless they were experiencing technical difficulties), email in their answers. The winner gets an arbitrary assortment of tat, often including a pointless DVD seemingly chosen at random from the bargain bucket. This 2-part BEST OF ROCKBUSTERS Compilation is based on the comprehensive 6-part ROCKBUSTERS compilation of every Rockbuster segment from the Xfm Ricky Gervais Show (released previously). CHAPTERS: Weezer, Coldplay, Justin Timberlake (0:00) Destiny's Child, Puff Daddy aka Diddy, The Bangles (10:43) The Dandy Warhols, Holly Valance, Whitney Houston (17:59) Foreigner, Shalamar, Bananarama (25:33) Adam Ant, Pixies, Anita Baker (33:14) Four Tops, The Charlatans, Freda Payne (40:45) Busted, The Spinners aka Detroit Spinners, Born Slippy (48:40) Limp Bizkit, Turin Brakes, Terence Trent D'Arby aka Sananda Maitreya (55:17) Junior Senior, Alison Moyet, Buzzcocks (1:06:39)
This week on Talk2TheHand, we dive into the glittering world of Smash Hits—the legendary pop magazine that defined an era and shaped the music tastes of millions of 80s and 90s kids. Known for its cheeky tone, playful interviews, and iconic posters, Smash Hits wasn't just a magazine; it was the pop bible for fans of Wham!, Madonna, Kylie, Take That, and beyond. We'll explore how it captured the heart and humor of the biggest names in pop and created a voice that was every bit as fun and irreverent as the stars it covered. But Smash Hits wasn't just about what you read—it was about what you experienced, too. Enter the Smash Hits Poll Winners Party: an annual live music extravaganza that brought fans closer than ever to their idols. From legendary performances to chaotic celebrity appearances (and plenty of surprise winners), the Poll Winners Party was the place where pop culture, fan hysteria, and unforgettable live moments collided. We'll relive some of the most iconic highlights, from jaw-dropping sets to the most unexpected award wins. As we unpack the legacy of Smash Hits, we'll talk about how it helped to bridge the gap between fans and pop stars, creating an intimate and playful connection that modern media has struggled to replicate. What made its interviews, song lyrics, and "bizarre-but-brilliant" features so unique? Join us as we reminisce about those sticker-covered issues, the cherished centerfolds on bedroom walls, and the Poll Winners Party memories that defined a generation. Whether you were team Bros, loved a bit of Bananarama, or just wanted to learn all the words to your favorite songs, Smash Hits was there for it all—celebrating the joy, the silliness, and the sheer brilliance of pop music. Talk2TheHand is an independent throwback podcast run by husband and wife, Jimmy and Beth. The commercial resurgence at PWL continued in 1993, with all four of the singles covered in this episode becoming UK hits. Still on her hot streak following the success of "The Love I Lost" with West End, Sybil returned to the top 5 with original tune "When I'm Good And Ready", which was credited to her alone. Sybil tells us what she thought of the song, which was poppier than her usual efforts, and Mike Stock shares his thoughts about the single coming together and its various mixes and remixes. After the disappointment of "Last Thing On My Mind", Bananarama were back in the top 30 with their remake of "More, More, More". Mike also discusses that track and the Please Yourself album. Meanwhile, another track was made with the World Wrestling Federation Superstars, with "Wrestlemania" reaching the top 20, and Coronation Street star Bill Tarmey visited the Hit Factory for a successful charity remake of "One Voice". Pete Day recalls working on both those singles, which came to PWL courtesy of Simon Cowell. Today's guest makes me feel a little bit country AND a little bit rock and roll. Welcome singer/songwriter Pamela McNeill to the podcast. She has accomplished so much in her career. But it all started in Winona, MN. She talks to me about the music scene there and what event set her mind on being a musician. She talks about some unusual things about her like being a massive fan of Rush, working as a clown at the Ground Round restaurant and how that led to her first real musical job. Soon enough she was playing cover bands, which led to a gig with the legendary Lamont Cranston, where she got a real education in the music business. That led to a gig opening for the one and only Etta James! But a serious relationship led her to the UK where she entered the orbit of the man himself…Rick Astley, back in his first heyday. That led to a bit of karmic retribution for one particular member of Bananarama. And all the while, she's writing her own music. She wrote Yanni's first lyrical song, wrote for Wynonna Judd, wrote with Pam Tillis, and many others. And when she finally made her own albums, she blew it out of the water. She has been releasing music steadily since 1998 and has a new EP out called Wave After Wave on Farm To Label records. Think Fleetwood Mac playing country music and you start to get a feel for it. To wrap up 1992, Stock and Waterman worked with two new artists and two returning favourites. In the case of Kylie Minogue, it was to be her final single released with PWL. Fittingly, her version of "Celebration" was lifted from Greatest Hits and gave her a final UK top 20 hit before departing for new musical adventures. We hear from Phil Harding & Ian Curnow, who produced the track (which later had additional production added by Stock and Waterman). Also, music video director Gregg Masuak joins us again to discuss the shoot in Rio de Janeiro. Bananarama were also back for an even more ABBA-influenced single, "Last Thing On My Mind", which wouldn't be a hit for them but, years later, would give Steps their first UK top 10 single. Mike Stock shares his thoughts on both versions. In terms of the new artists, sibling duo Fresh released "Did I Say Ti Amo" and, thanks to Simon Cowell, PWL embarked on a collaboration with the World Wrestling Federation Superstars, resulting in a top 5 hit for "Slam Jam". Mike and former PWL engineer Pete Day recall the WWF project coming together.Support the Show.Subscribe for bonus material at chartbeats.com.au/sawTwitter: @ChartBeatsAU, @MrMattDenbyInstagram: @chartbeatsauFacebook: Chart Beats: A Journey Through PopEmail: chartbeats.au@gmail.com

Summer 1992 didn't yield much in the way of Stock and Waterman productions. But in August that year, there was a sudden rush of releases, kicked off by a curious novelty record: a remake of "Summer Holiday" by Fat Slags, characters from Viz. Former PWL engineer Pete Day helps us get to the bottom of who exactly performed on the track. Meanwhile, Kylie Minogue got one step closer to departing the Hit Factory with new single "What Kind Of Fool (Heard All That Before)", which was included on her Greatest Hits album. Mike Stock and Terry Blamey tell us about the song, which sounded like classic SAW. Speaking of classics, Nancy Davis had another shot at success with a cover version of Jackie Wilson's "(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher And Higher". And the new-look Bananarama returned to work with Mike and Pete Waterman on "Movin' On", their first single as just the duo of Sara Dallin and Keren Woodward. The Greek goddess of love, sex, desire and beauty, Aphrodite is mostly depicted naked and/or wet. And depending on your age and taste, that could be by Botticelli, Bananarama or Lady Gaga. Born from the sea foam, you can still visit her rock in Cyprus, where there's always a crowd of tourists. No one is immune to her charms, says Hesiod. In fact we can all learn from Aphrodite's stress-busting strategy: when something annoying or stressful happens, she goes to Cyprus - for a bath.Rock star mythologist' and reformed stand-up Natalie Haynes is obsessed with the ancient world. Here she explores key stories from ancient Rome and Greece that still have resonance today. They might be biographical, topographical, mythological or epic, but they are always hilarious, magical and tragic, mystifying and revelatory. And they tell us more about ourselves now than seems possible of stories from a couple of thousand years ago.Producer...Mary Ward-Lowery
Pop music is as quintessential to the summer as warm breezes, lazy afternoons, and margaritas by the pool. And for decades, musical artists have been inspired by the season to create memorable, catchy songs that have, in turn, become required listening every time the warmer months roll around. So for one of our 2024 Summer Specials, the Great Pop Culture Debate wants to feel the heat as we name the Best "Summer" Song. Songs discussed include “Cruel Summer” by Bananarama; “Summer in the City” by The Lovin' Spoonful; “Cool for the Summer” by Demi Lovato; “Summer Breeze” by Seals & Crofts; “California Gurls” by Katy Perry & Snoop Dogg; “Summer of ‘69” by Bryan Adams; “The Boys of Summer” by Don Henley; “Sailing” by Christopher Cross; “Come Sail Away” by Styx; “Summer Lovin'” from Grease; “Under the Boardwalk” by The Drifters; “I Get Around” by The Beach Boys; and more! Join host Eric Rezsnyak, GPCD panelists Derek Mekita and Kate Racculia, and special guest Ashleigh Stiles from Wizard Radio as they discuss 16 of the most popular songs associated with the summer.
