The Big Pig is back!As July, turned into August in 1985, the world was still basking in the afterglow of, what was already being called the event of the decade. No, not the ceasing production of the Sinclair C5, or even the latest episode of Blind Date with our Cilla. Live Aid had defined the coming together of all things pop for a generation, in the name of raising money for African famine. And those bands and artists who graced the stages in London and Philadelphia (well, perhaps not Adam Ant, as we say) were feeling the seismic effect of not only the public's affection - but also their pocket money. Duran Duran, Paul Young, Simple Minds, U2 and others (still, sorry , not you Adam) were enjoying plenty of success. And the loudest and most exciting shirt of the summer did not belong to BBC's Mark Ellen or David Hepworth, it was the iconic NOW pig. Yes, NOW That's What I Call Music 5 not only provided THE soundtrack to our summer in 1985, it also gave us the most gloriously techicoloured album cover. How exciting was that list of stars? And joining me for this episode to share his memories of this classic summer of music is journalist and author Graeme Thomson. And what can you expect? Duran Duran climb the Eiffel Tower. UK funk and soul makes a move for the charts through the fantastic sounds of Fine Young Cannibals, Simply Red and Jaki Graham. Graeme shares why 80s Bowie deserves attention, how Marillion (and a band T-Shirt!) made an early impact on his listening, what Jim Kerr told him about Don't You Forget About Me and why U2 needed to evolve to survive. But significantly, join us as we discuss how compilation albums take us back, tell real stories of a period and revel in how important pop music for all of us in our formative years and has the ability to stay with us as we move through our lives. And enjoy Graeme's reflections on his latest book, In Another World: The Four Seasons of Talk Talk, and the iconic sounds of a quite unique band.Step aside from life in 2026 for an hour or so, and join us back in a time when it really was great to be alive. The “covers” folder is full. Overfull, to be honest. So tonight’s show is a supersized show of great remakes, and many of them are quite surprising. The Tubs covering Metallica? Social Distortion doing Chris Isaak? White Fence remaking Simply Red? The Hollywood Stars retaking their own song back from Kiss? Hell, even Ty Segall’s version of The Doors could be considered a surprise. There are also quite a few more conventional remakes here tonight, but each and every one is what the kids today call a “banger”. (Oof, remind me to never use that term again.) I’m sure any Ledge listener will find a favorite. What’s your highlight? For more info, including setlists, head to http://scotthudson.blogspot.com
Well well well, Mr Hucknall, we meet again. Simply Red's 1995 album 'Life' was a big seller and had a massive number one single on it but kind of feels like it doesn't get remembered much when people look back. We certainly didn't know anything much about it going into this episode and to be honest we kind of wish it had stayed that way. But we do have probably the biggest albums and singles sections that we've ever done, loads of bands that we get to talk about like Smashing Pumpkins, Incubus, Anthrax and obviously Cliff Richard. Plus we get to add a song to our "much-loved" Give Me Some Reggae! playlist where we add terrible reggae songs from albums we're covering that are in no way reggae albums which is always the sign of a good episode. As always please do give us a follow on our social media platforms and why not go and give us a nice rating or comment over on Spotify now that you're able to while you're checking out this episode's companion playlist (which contains ALL of the songs we talk about on this one) and our ongoing and sprawling playlist of songs from each album that we do an episode on. And if you want to donate to our PayPal account for the price of a pint or a cup of coffee that is always appreciated as well obviously. Cheers!

Send us Fan MailIan has spent 45 years in the music industry, managing Simply Red, Simple Minds, The Pretenders, and Suede. He started at 17 with a boot full of vinyl and a two-litre Cortina, driving 1,200 miles a week as a sales rep. He went on to oversee the biggest self-released album in history - Simply Red's Home, which outsold most Taylor Swift records and still holds the record today! But Ian's story isn't just about music. It's about what happens when a founder tries to exit a business built entirely on relationships, trust, and instinct. After a bruising experience selling 50% to Live Nation and rejecting a buyout offer before his plane left the runway at Heathrow, Ian found a route almost nobody in his world had heard of - and it changed everything. This is a conversation about sliding doors moments, creative courage, knowing when enough is enough, and an exit strategy that let him cash out, stay involved, and reward every person who helped him build it.This podcast is produced by TribunistaSponsored by Capital Asset Management

Microsoft Teams is having a "Simply Red" moment and it's leaving some people seeing red. Microsoft are removing the labels from the apps on the app rail. Because
Mick Hucknall may be a polarising figure in the British media (well, I guess it mostly is only the "hate" pole), but how can anyone deny the power of "Holding Back the Years"? It's a song birthed in a stream of consciousness writing exercise but steeped in a history of childhood sadness. We discuss our own sadness, give a deep analysis of the song and video, and we also discuss why we refuse to pair a wine with this Simply Red. Playliste: Blur - Parklife Simply Red - Fairground Supergrass - Alright Alanis Morissette - Hand in my pocket INXS - Elegantly wasted Take That - Back for good Pulp - Sorted for E's & Wizz Annie Lennox - No more I love you's Oasis - Roll with it David Bowie - Hallo spaceboy (Pet Shop Boys Mix) David Bowie - Under pressure (Live at Brit Awards 1996)
On today's episode of The Therapy Crouch, Abbey and Peter unpack the chaos of Abbey's long awaited 40th birthday — and it's safe to say Peter surpassed all of our expectations. We've decided to do a deep dive on some of our favourite albums to explore the stories behind them. What did the artists really think of each other? Where did the inspirations from the songs come from?Joining Andrea to discuss is Head Tour Guide at the Irish Rock ‘N' Roll Museum Experience, Alan Buckley, who's going to talk through Simply Red's album ‘Stars'!
"Lived Through That” is the companion podcast to my book where I look at influential musicians of the 80s and 90s and where they are today. On this podcast, we'll delve deeper into a single pivotal moment in the lives of some of the artists I feature in that book, as well as other artists I love and admire. The stories they tell are open, honest, and inspiring. This week on the podcast, I'm thrilled to welcome the incredible Corrine Drewery — the unmistakable voice behind Swing Out Sister! Alongside Andy Connell, Corrine helped define the sound of sophisti-pop, the genre-blending movement that brought jazz, R&B, and new wave synths into perfect harmony. Think Sade, Simply Red, Style Council, and Everything But The Girl — and of course, Swing Out Sister, whose 1986 smash hit “Breakout” still brings a smile to my face every time I hear it. But here's the twist: it almost didn't happen.
Kari and Joe don't want to work, they just want to bang on the vibraslap all day, so... we did. Well, we talked about songs that used vibraslap for about 50 minutes, same difference. Join us for the fun! That vibraslap is so versatile everyone from yacht rocker Ali Thomson to rock rockers Pat Travers Band (covering a reggae classic, don't ask) to R&B legends The S.O.S. Band to sophistipoppers Simply Red can make great use of it. Hear songs from those folks and more, plus tidbits about The Boss, a total wanker, and Axl Rose wilding out at Bungalow 8. If that doesn't make you smash the download button, I don't know what will.Send us a text

This week on The Metro, Rev Jeff Ivins brings you the following bands for your time warp back to the 1980s: Assembly, Translator, The Hooters, Simply Red, Paul Carrack, Marshall Crenshaw, Killer Pussy, Fine Young Cannibals, Japan, Fiction Factory, The Fixx, Wang Chung, The Romantics, The Alarm, and finishing up with some New Order.
Strap into the time machine and set the dial for July 1986, a time when Top Gun ruled the box office, synthesizers ruled the airwaves, and Kenny Loggins ruled… something. In this episode, Milt and Dave wade knee-deep through the Billboard Top 10 from a summer that gave us everything from Loggins' “Danger Zone” (still trying to make aviator sunglasses cool) to Simply Red's “Holding Back the Years” (still holding back… the energy). Expect the usual: unsolicited nostalgia, suspiciously convenient personal stories, and yes, Milt somehow manages to rhyme “Spinal Tap” with “Trader Joe's nap.” Don't ask. Highlights include: A passionate defense of Janet Jackson's “Nasty,” because someone had to. A soul-searching breakdown of Billy Ocean's “There'll Be Sad Songs (To Make You Cry),” which succeeds. It does indeed break down. Two grown men pretending to know the difference between Howard Jones and Howard Johnson. And the moment Peter Gabriel's “Sledgehammer” rolls in and flattens the competition like, well, a sledgehammer. Plus: Johnny-themed trivia (because there are apparently way more songs about guys named Johnny than anyone needed), some light shade thrown at the Fabulous Thunderbirds, and a very necessary refreshing of the chart — where Dave and Milt save the Top 10 from itself by swapping in some ‘80s underdogs. Topics 00:00 - Banter: Naps, snacks, and fake bands (aka our wheelhouse) 10:47 - Listener mail, podcast gripes, and people who claim to like our show 20:18 - Blues-rock? In this economy? A look at the Fabulous Thunderbirds 37:59 - The mandatory Howard Jones detour, because optimism was a thing once 45:43 - “Danger Zone” drops in on a fighter jet and a synth budget 57:23 - Peter Gabriel brings the big weird with “Sledgehammer” 01:07:30 - “Who's Johnny?” is asked, and not answered 01:14:59 - All-Johnny trivia. Johnny dangerously. Johnny repetitively. 01:26:51 - Janet Jackson says “No” like only she can 01:35:12 - Billy Ocean does that thing where he makes us cry on purpose 01:43:45 - Genesis makes a surprise cameo because, of course 01:59:18 - A tearful goodbye with Simply Red and his emotional rollercoaster
We've had a double header in both divisions since our last show but there's only discussion point on the agenda today; what about those goalscoring Lomboto brothers? They have their own God but our main talking point, naturally enough, is how the League of Ireland will cope without its sometime messiah Damien Duff, who interrupted the regular Sunday service to make a shocking exit to a Simply Red tune. We'll hear bits from his last press conference before pondering the chain of events that few saw coming - not even from the grassy knoll. It's not just a Duff show - contrary to predictions - as there's a bit of Bohs brilliance, and Alan Reynolds talking about a return from the dead over Easter that appears to be attracting a growing number of devotees. Johnny took his microphone to Inchicore to catch the thoughts of an under-pressure Stephen Kenny and also hear a few words from Derry's Tiernan Lynch and Liam Boyce. We also have pizza tales from Ballybofey, Hurley as Moleman, missed messages, the context to crazy scenes in Cork and Moses stepping out of line. Your weekly sermon of football opinions interspersed with Simpsons, Father Ted and Only Fools and Horses references comes to you in association with Rascals Brewing, Sport Cosanta, Future Ticketing & Collar & Cuff, all of whom will be back next week, but Damien won't, or will he?

“New Girl Syndrome” The New Zealand-born Lisa Crawley has fearlessly created art and then just as fearlessly followed that art all over the world. From a small town in Japan to a cruise ship to Los Angeles, Crawley is not afraid of the hard miles and she's bravely traversed the globe performing wherever she can. Armed with a luminescent voice and melodic muscle, Crawley's work suggests a dreamy mix of Amy Winehouse and Bic Runga. Over the years she appeared in the Tony-Award winning musical Once, opened for Paul Weller, Simply Red and Suzanne Vega, she's performed with the Auckland Symphony Orchestra and she's had her work appear in everything from The Last Days Of Capitalism to Nancy Drew to Good Trouble. Her new EP New Girl Syndrome is an infectious and stirring song cycle that's contemplative, probing and unreasonably catchy. Lisa's a really funny person and her humor is deadpan and sly and it's a fascinating counterpoint to her emotive and affecting songbook. www.lisacrawley.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenbooks.com IG + Bluesky: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com
