Welcome to a conversation about The Power of Dialogue in Northern Ireland's Peace Journey. This is a dialogue between Mr. Mark Durkan, who was part of the negotiating team for the Good Friday Agreement in 1998, and the Director of the Norwegian Nobel Institute, Olav Njølstad. The conversation is moderated by Kjersti Fløgstad, Executive Director of the Nobel Peace Center. In 1998, the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the Nobel Peace Prize to John Hume and David Trimble in recognition of their brave leadership in finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Northern Ireland. Twenty-five years on from the awarding of the prize in Oslo and twenty-six from the signing of the Good Friday Agreement, we remember the pivotal roles of John Hume and David Trimble in building the Agreement and transforming life on the island of Ireland. Join us to discuss the importance of dialogue in peace-building, the legacy of their determination, and leadership in Northern Ireland's peace journey.
Wolfe Tone's Cordial Union Last week I attended an event in Parliament Buildings at Stormont, hosted by US Special Economic Envoy Joe Kennedy. There was a panel discussion on the impact of the Good Friday Agreement which involved myself, former DUP leader Peter Robinson; former Alliance Assembly Speaker Eileen Bell; Lady Daphne Trimble, President of the Ulster Unionist Party; and former SDLP leader Mark Durkan. First Minister designate Michelle O'Neill, DUP leader Jeffrey Donaldson and UUP leader Doug Beattie were all present. Ceasefires NowNews from the Middle East continues to numb and outrage and anger most people. But we cannot give up. We have a duty to the people of Palestine to stay focussed on the demands to Stop the War - Support Humanitarian Initiatives - Start Peace Talks. The people of Israel and Palestine need the support of the international community. We are part of that community. Let us find ways to get our leaders to uphold international law. End the siege of Gaza. Free Palestine. PULSEMickey Coleman , his wife Erin and their sons Micheál and Riordan were in An Cultúrlann last week on Belfast's Falls Road to launch Mickey's new book PULSE. Peter Canavan was there also along with mé féin. I never thought I would be on a panel with Peter Canavan - one of my footballing heroes and all Ireland champion with Tyrone. Twice. But there we were telling yarns and sharing songs and funny stories. And a bunch of fine singers from Glassdrummond entertained us and moved everyone with their rendition of The Brantry Boy.

In a special anniversary episode 25 years on from the agreement that brought peace to Northern Ireland, host Ailbhe Rea heads home to Belfast to retell the gripping story of how a historic compromise was reached.Former British PM Tony Blair and former Irish premier Bertie Ahern explain why — and how — they decided to pursue a peace deal when they both came to power in 1997, and recall key moments of drama from inside the negotiating room.David Kerr, right-hand man to the late David Trimble — the UUP leader who would go on to win the Nobel Peace prize for his role in the talks — describes the splits and crises within unionism at the time, while chief SDLP negotiator Mark Durkan, later to become deputy first minister of Northern Ireland, explains how his boss John Hume's thinking infused the entire peace process.Mitchel McLaughlin, spokesperson for Sinn Féin during the negotiations, describes the challenge his party's leadership faced in trying to take the entire republican movement with them. Jonathan Powell, chief of staff to Blair, explains what it was like to face Sinn Fein across the negotiating table. And Monica McWilliams, co-founder of the Northern Ireland Women's Coalition, shares her memories of those tense final days and hours inside Castle Buildings.Ailbhe also meets Cathy McCann and Betty Speers, two victims of an IRA bomb in 1990 — Cathy was severely injured and Betty's brother was killed — as they reflect on what the Good Friday Agreement means to them. And Ailbhe ends the episode with Sara Canning, the partner of the late journalist Lyra McKee, who was killed by dissident republicans on the 21st anniversary of the agreement, four years ago.
The Northern Ireland Health Minister has warned that lifting Covid-19 restrictions is a gamble and a risk, and won’t be enough to drive down the number of infections. On Thursday Ministers agreed to a one week extension of the current lockdown restrictions which are in place - followed by a phased reopening of the hospitality sector. Former Deputy First Minister and SDLP Leader, Mark Durkan, joined Susan to talk about whether this is the right approach and discuss the renewed talk of a United Ireland approach to tackling Covid-19. The Eames-Bradley report was the best approach yet to how Northern Ireland should deal with Troubles legacy issues, argues Mark Durkan. The former SDLP leader and deputy first minister was interviewed for the ‘Forward Together’ podcast series immediately before declaring his candidacy for Fine Gael for the Dublin constituency in the European Parliament elections. Mark argues that the proposals tabled for the 2013 talks mediated by US envoy Richard Haass were “not as good as Eames-Bradley”. The challenge is also that “different parties are saying different things at different times”, making solutions more difficult. For example, “some parties... say draw a line under the past... and then in the next breath they're demanding pursuit of certain issues”.
Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael candidates running for the European Parliament elections in Dublin have discussed a potential vote pact ahead of polls opening in May. On Independent.ie's Floating Voter podcast, Fianna Fáil candidate Barry Andrews says he would be open to a vote pact with former SDLP leader Mark Durkan who is running for Fine Gael. “We'd be open to it if Mark is willing to offer it,” Mr Andrews says. The former minister of State's comments follows Fianna Fáil and the SDLP announcing an all Ireland policy partnership. Mr Durkan did not rule out a vote pact with Mr Andrews but similarly did not say he would open to the offer now that he is running for Fine Gael. Separately, Mr Andrews defends his record as GOAL chief executive and explains why he is going before the electorate again after the hammering he got in the 2011 General Election. Mr Andrews says “a lot has changed” since he left politics and insists he had built up a “bank of experience” after the devastating election for Fianna Fail during the financial crash. Meanwhile, Mr Durkan, who has recently joined Fine Gael, defends his decision to run in the Dublin rather than Northern Ireland now that UK is set to contest the EU elections. The Derry man says he wants to run in Dublin so he can represent citizens across the entire island of Ireland and protect the Good Friday Agreement. He says candidates running in the North may have to contest on a “time limited” and “scope limited” mandate. Mr Durkan also attempts to name the main characters from the hit comedy show The Derry Girls, while Mr Andrews is quizzed on his knowledge of Dublin GAA.
