Why were Laetitia Casta and Aishwarya Rai criticized for their appearance at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival? What starts as celebrity gossip quickly becomes a much bigger conversation about beauty standards, aging, body image, and social media. Because the more I looked at the comments coming out of Cannes, the more one question kept nagging at me:Did the tabloids disappear—or did we become them? Are. You. Fingerstyle guitar is one of the most personal of styles and we'll hear some great players the next two weeks. A couple of recordings served as inspiration for these episodes of The Sing Out! Radio Magazine. Awhile back, Tompkins Square released a collection of demos and outtakes from the great guitarist Duck Baker on a recording called Les Blues Du Richmond, with a wide variety of tunes in many styles. Craft Records has a collection called The Thousand Incarnations of the Rose, featuring guitar and banjo from some great American primitive guitarists and banjo players including John Fahey, Robbie Basho and Peter Lang. We'll focus this recording next week. Fingerstyle guitar … this week and next on The Sing Out! Points of Interest 00:01 – 00:38 – Introduction: Marcel opens the episode by introducing Peter Lang as an entrepreneur, investor, and operator deeply focused on mergers and acquisitions. 01:00 – 02:13 – From Holding Company to Teaching M&A: Peter explains that he now runs a holding company, invests in assets including agencies, and is focused on teaching other founders how to acquire and grow businesses. 02:41 – 06:09 – How an Agency Owner Became Obsessed with Acquisitions: Peter shares how an early interest in corporate finance, investing, and business ownership evolved alongside accidentally building a digital agency. 06:34 – 09:23 – The First Deal and the Power of a Motivated Seller: Peter recounts the unusual acquisition that pulled him into M&A, showing how urgency, creative deal structure, and downside protection shaped his first major transaction. 09:44 – 12:25 – Why Buying Can Be Faster Than Building: Peter reflects on completing 21 transactions and argues that acquiring existing cash flow is often easier than spending years building the same result organically. 12:34 – 15:13 – Why More Founders Still Do Not Pursue Acquisitions: Marcel and Peter discuss the real barriers to M&A, including fear, lack of information, false beliefs, and the failure to consistently make time for acquisition work. 15:20 – 18:28 – Risk Versus Risky Behavior in M&A: Peter explains the difference between unavoidable business risk and reckless decision-making, emphasizing that preparation, education, and structure are what reduce exposure. 19:07 – 23:19 – Diligence, Integration, and What Buyers Are Really Acquiring: The conversation shifts to best practices in deals, with Peter stressing that due diligence and post-close integration matter more than the excitement of signing the deal itself. 23:19 – 28:12 – How to Evaluate Culture Before an Acquisition: Peter outlines why cultural fit must be measured, not guessed, using tools like NPS, eNPS, personality frameworks, and manager-role alignment to avoid poor integrations. 28:12 – 32:00 – The Great Wealth Transfer Creates a Major Opportunity: Marcel and Peter discuss how retiring owners and succession gaps are creating a historic supply of businesses that need buyers over the next two decades. 32:00 – 36:21 – How AI Is Changing Seller Behavior and Buyer Strategy: Peter explains that AI is accelerating uncertainty for agency owners, which may push more founders to sell while also reshaping what makes a business attractive to buyers. 36:38 – 45:45 – Why AI-Forward Agencies and Programmatic Buyers Will Win: Marcel and Peter close by exploring why service businesses remain resilient, why agencies still have a future, and why buyers who combine acquisitions with AI adaptation will likely outperform. Communications professor Bill Yousman discusses media literacy and dispelling myths about crime and justice. He is interviewed by Spencer Graves. Yousman is a professor of communications in the School of Communication, Media & the Arts in Sacred Heart University in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Two of his research reports have appeared in Project Censored's annuals for 2017 and 2025: "Eleven theses on disinformation (with apologies to Karl Marx)" (2025) "Who's afraid of critical media literacy?" (2017). In a section of a book scheduled to appear later this year, he quotes a 2021 tweet from conservative activist Christopher Rufo that, “We have successfully frozen their brand—‘critical race theory'—into the public conversation and are steadily driving up negative perceptions. We will eventually turn it toxic, as we put all of the various cultural insanities under that brand category. ... The goal is to have the public read something crazy in the newspaper and immediately think 'critical race theory.' We have decodified the term and will recodify it to annex the entire range of cultural constructions that are unpopular with Americans." Others of his publications relevant to the current discussion include the following: '"[IN]JUSTICE ROLLS DOWN LIKE WATER. . .": Challenging White Supremacy in Media Constructions of Crime and Punishment'. "Challenging the media-incarceration complex through media education". Prime Time Prisons on U.S. TV: Representation of Incarceration (2009). The Spike Lee Enigma: Challenge and Incorporation in Media Culture (2013). And he is a co-editor of Gender, Race, and Class in Media: A Critical Reader, a widely used collection of research reports on issues of power, identity, and ideology in popular culture. Today we meet EWP adjunct faculty Suryamayi Aswini Clarence-Smith to explore her work in Utopian studies, shaped by her upbringing in Auroville and her roots in Integral Yoga. We discuss integral approaches to education and her CIIS course, Prefiguring Utopia, which asks what a utopian learning experience might look like. We discuss the limits of rational teleology in utopian praxis and the importance of integral frameworks, like the Integral Yoga of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, that emphasize the complementarity of multiple ways of knowing, harmonizing the planes and parts of the self, necessary to support collective transformation. The conversation also explores the scholar-practitioner as a site of transformation, and she shares a little about her course at CIIS, Awareness Through the Body, which guides students in exploring embodiment and contemplation, experimenting with their physical and psychic constitution, and we discuss this as a practice of cultivating conditions for transformative experiences grounded in revolutionary, evolutionary, and utopian ideals. Book - Prefiguring Utopia: The Auroville Experiment Book Talk - here Dr. Suryamayi Clarence-Smith is an award-winning scholar, educator and facilitator based in Auroville, India, the largest intentional community in the world. Suryamayi holds a PhD in International Development from the University of Sussex, and a BA from the University of California, Berkeley; she is currently affiliated with the Sri Aurobindo International Institute for Educational Research (SAIIER) in Auroville. Her research on utopian and prefigurative practice has been published by leading editors and publishers in the field, notably in the Ralahine Utopian Studies series (Peter Lang), the Alternatives to Capitalism in the 21st century series (Bristol University Press), and the Antipode Book Series (Wiley). Dedicated to sharing the outcomes of her research to various audiences, she lectures internationally in both academic and activist settings. Communications professor Stephan Russ-Mohl shares concerns about media, especially in Germany. He is interviewed by Spencer Graves. Russ-Mohl is a prolific journalist, researcher and professor emeritus at the University of Lugano in the Italian-speaking portion of Switzerland. He specializing in quality assurance and quality management in mass media focusing primarily but not exclusively on Germany. Between 1985 and 2001 he was primarily based at the Free University of Berlin. Between 2002 and 2018 he served primarily on the faculty at the University of Lugano. He has also had sabbaticals at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and at Stanford in the US and at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy. He has published primarily in German but some in English, and some of his work has been translated into many other languages. In a 2023 book on "Deep Journalism", Russ-Mohl and co-editor Sebastian Turner described four categories of media based on people's willingness to pay:1 Job-related information, where people pay to improve their abilities at work. Consumer markets, where people pay to help them get more value from what they buy. Entertainment. Politics and public life, where willingness to pay is low, because most individuals are "rationally ignorant",2 as their ability to influence public policy is limited. He has also written with Susanne Fengler about "The (Behavioral) Economics of Media Accountability".3 In this, they describe "the journalist as Homo oeconomicus, citing Amos Tversky, Daniel Kahneman, and others in behavioral economics. In 2024 he published a chapter on "Strengths and Weaknesses of Corona Coverage"4 in a book on Corona and the mass media.5 Shortly after the 2024 US presidential election, he discussed, "The media power of billionaires".6 Ten months after Trump's second inauguration, he noted that, "Donald Trump manages to dominate the global media landscape even in his second term", then asked "How does he do it? And what should journalists do about it?"7 Bibliography Anthony Downs (1957), An Economic Theory of Democracy, Wikidata Q482418 Anthony Downs (1957), An Economic Theory of Democracy, Wikidata Q482418 Fengler et al., eds. When Virginie Despentes (1969) published her provocative debut novel Baise-moi in 1994, no one could have anticipated how she would gradually become a literary, feminist, and punk icon. This book is the first holistic, interdisciplinary approach to Despentes's novels and evolution as an author. Using feminist, queer, literary, and punk theories, the book examines how Despentes has developed and refined her Grrrl writing in Baise-moi, Les Chiennes savantes, and Les Jolies choses. Michèle Schaal's Grrrl Writing: Virginie Despentes's Authorial Politics (Peter Lang, 2026) specifically illustrates how her unique authorial politics, infused with punk, genre- and genderbending praxes, have provided an acerbic critique of still largely heteropatriarchal French society. Despentes's Grrrl writing denounces how this system engenders and thrives on injustice and social inequities, but also how conventions at play in classic or populist literary genres can perpetuate oppression as well Learn more about your ad choices. Peter Lang is a seasoned entrepreneur and M&A strategist who helps agencies and digital businesses grow through smart acquisitions and integration. He co-founded Uhuru Network in 2010, building it into a seven-figure digital sales and inbound marketing agency before exiting in December 2022. Peter is now Founder of Digital Agency Business, Owner of Digital Mastermind Group, and a board member at Lang Acquisitions, where he supports leaders and portfolio companies in driving growth through strategic M&A and collaboration. In this episode… Many agency owners struggle to break past growth plateaus using only organic methods. While expanding client rosters and service offerings can help, these paths are often slow, unpredictable, and resource-heavy. Could acquiring other agencies be a faster and more strategic way to expand capabilities, increase revenue, and build long-term value? Peter Lang, an experienced entrepreneur and M&A strategist, explains how intentional acquisitions can unlock rapid growth and solve operational challenges. Peter shares how to identify opportunities, align a seller's motivations with your vision, and integrate teams without losing cultural balance. He also emphasizes the importance of having a clear long-term objective, building deal flow systems, and treating integration as a professional discipline to maximize the value of each transaction. Tune in to this episode of the Smart Business Revolution Podcast as John Corcoran interviews Peter Lang, Founder of Digital Agency Business and Owner of Digital Mastermind Group, about using M&A to grow agencies. Peter discusses sourcing and closing deals, creating a compelling vision for sellers, and best practices for integration. He also talks about cultural fit in acquisitions, avoiding common M&A pitfalls, and his journey from agency founder to advisor and dealmaker.
In 1897, Gustav Klimt led a group of radical artists to break free from the cultural establishment of Vienna and found a movement that became known as the Vienna Secession. In the vibrant atmosphere of coffee houses, Freudian psychoanalysis and the music of Wagner and Mahler, the Secession sought to bring together fine art and music with applied arts such as architecture and design. The movement was characterized by Klimt's stylised paintings, richly decorated with gold leaf, and the art nouveau buildings that began to appear in the city, most notably the Secession Building, which housed influential exhibitions of avant-garde art and was a prototype of the modern art gallery. The Secessionists themselves were pioneers in their philosophy and way of life, aiming to immerse audiences in unified artistic experiences that brought together visual arts, design, and architecture. Seán Creagh was born in County Monaghan in 1977. He attended Our Lady's Secondary School in Castleblayney and later on Dundalk Institute of Technology. After moving to the U.S and developing an intense interest in Irish-American history he attended Northeastern Illinois University where he achieved an Honors Degree in History as well as Honors in Education. Today he is a middle school Social Studies teacher in Illinois. His first book was The Wolfhounds of Irish-American Nationalism. Listen to an interview on that here. In this interview he discusses his second book entitled Republican Solipsist, recently published with Peter Lang Republican Solipsist: The Life and Times of Joseph Mcgarrity, 1874-1940 (Peter Lang, 2025) discusses the life of Joseph McGarrity and his role within Irish and Irish American Republicanism including the complicated transatlantic relationship between two opposing visions of an independent Ireland. McGarrity's militant Republicanism came into regular conflict with the reality of the political situation in Ireland. While the role of John Devoy has been well documented in the development of Irish American nationalism in the form of Clan na Gael that of Joseph McGarrity has been less well analyzed. For many historians the central focus of Irish American nationalism during the revolutionary period of 1916–1923 has centered on the Devoy-controlled branch of Clan na Gael. However, this period saw significant influence from McGarrity and the Philadelphia branch of the movement in shaping political events in Ireland which has been largely ignored. The book places McGarrity at the center of Irish Republicanism during one of the most critical periods of its history. It is hard to imagine how militant Irish Republicanism would have evolved had it not been for the role and influence of this long-neglected figure in Irish history. In Remembrance of Things Present: The Invention of the Time Capsule (University of Chicago Press, 2019), Nick Yablon traces the birth of the time capsule in the United States. Starting with the Gilded Age, Yablon explores the way Americans from diverse backgrounds constructed memories of their present through the creation of time capsules. Examining the ephemera included in the time capsules, including writing texts, photographs, phonographic records, films, and other artifacts, Yablon details the way these capsules not only created records of their time periods, but also how they show the ways in which their creators and contributors imagined the future. Remembrance of Things Present not only allows readers a glimpse into the history of time capsules, but also the ways in which politics, social justice, and American values were all represented in these buried treasures. On this show we welcome back Zane McNeill to discuss their new edited collection: Building Multispecies Resistance Against Exploitation: Stories from the Frontline of Labor and Animal Rights (published by Peter Lang, 2024). This incredible collection of contributions from activists and scholars about the structures of violence and oppression that are shared by human and non-human labourers working and dying in necropolitical facilities. The book also asks readers to consider the intersection between class and species, race, gender and other categories of oppression, and the ways that the contemporary Animal Activist Non-profit Sector (AANS) upholds hierarchies in its mission towards animal liberation. There are some powerful examples of successful social and political campaigns that we can draw from and that can help us to build strategic alliances and coalitions between social movements and political subjects. Zane McNeill is a scholar-activist, 15-year vegan, and National Lawyers Guild's Animal Liberation Committee chair. They have worked closely with the Institute of Critical Animal Studies (ICAS) and have published chapters in ICAS collections, including Vegans on Speciesism and Ableism: Ecoability Voices for Disability and Animal Justice and Expanding the Critical Animal Studies Imagination: Essays on Solidarity and Total Liberation. He has also edited Queer and Trans Voices: Achieving Liberation Through Consistent Anti-Oppression, Vegan Entanglements: Dismantling Racial and Carceral Capitalism, and Building Multispecies Resistance Against Exploitation: Stories from the Frontlines of Labor and Animal Rights. Burn It Down: Feminist Manifestos for the Revolution (Verso, 2020), Breanne Fahs has curated a comprehensive collection of feminist manifestos from the nineteenth century to today. Fahs collected over seventy-five manifestos from around the world, calling on feminists to act, be defiant and show their rage. This thought-provoking and timely collection includes not only popular manifestos often taught in women and gender studies courses, but also introduces readers to works from feminist activists who are often placed on the margins. The eight sections of the book cover manifestos from a wide range of feminist activist spectrums: queer/trans, anticapitalist/anarchist, angry/violent, indigenous/women of color, sex/body, hacker/cyborg, trashy/punk, and witchy/bitchy. Fahs has put together a collection that has something for everyone and that is a must-need on every feminist bookshelf. Rebekah Buchanan is an Associate Professor of English at Western Illinois University. She researches zines, zine writers and the influence of music subcultures and fandom on writers and narratives. She is the author of Writing a Riot: Riot Grrrl Zines and Feminist Rhetorics (Peter Lang, 2018). Contemporary Chinese film and literature often draw on time-honored fantastical texts and tales which were founded in the milieu of patriarchy, parental authority, heteronormativity, nationalism, and anthropocentrism. Cathy Yue Wang's Snake Sisters and Ghost Daughters: Feminist Adaptations of Traditional Tales in Chinese Fantasy (Wayne State University Press, 2023) examines the processes by which modern authors and filmmakers reshape these traditional tales to develop new narratives that interrogate the ingrained patriarchal paradigm. Through a rigorous analysis, Wang delineates changes in both content and narrative that allow contemporary interpretations to reimagine the gender politics and contexts of the tales retold. With a broad transmedia approach and a nuanced understanding of intertextuality, this work contributes to the ongoing negotiation in academic and popular discourse between past and present, traditional and contemporary, and text and reality in a globalized and postmodern world. Snake Sisters and Ghost Daughters offers an engaging interdisciplinary investigation of issues at the heart of these traditional tales such as gender and status hierarchy, marriage and family life, and in-group/out-group distinction. Beyond the content of these individual stories, Wang ties these narratives together across time using cognitive literary criticism, especially affective narratology, to shed new light on the adaptation of literary and cultural texts and their sociopolitical contexts. Dr. Cathy Yue Wang is a lecturer in Department of Chinese Language and Literature, School of Humanities, Shanghai Normal University in China. She received her PhD from Macquarie University in Australia. She is particularly interested in applying feminist and queer perspectives into examinations of adaptation and retelling, children and young adult literature, as well as boys' love subculture and fandom in the East Asian context. She is the author of Snake Sisters and Ghost Daughters: Feminist Adaptations of Traditional Tales in Chinese Fantasy (Wayne State University Press, 2023) and editor of Catching Chen Qing Ling: The Untamed and Adaptation, Production, and Reception in Transcultural Contexts (Peter Lang, forthcoming). Linshan Jiang is a Postdoctoral Associate in the Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at Duke University. She received her Ph.D. in East Asian Languages and Cultural Studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara, where she also obtained a Ph.D. emphasis in Translation Studies. Her research interests include modern and contemporary literature, film, and popular culture in mainland China, Taiwan, and Japan; trauma and memory studies; gender and sexuality studies; queer studies; as well as comparative literature and translation studies. The Eastern Orthodox Churches in post-communist Eastern Europe are embroiled in long-running conflicts over ownership of territory, saints, sites, nations, and history. These often violent conflicts reflect political and national rivalries, most explicitly in former Yugoslavia and Ukraine. They are often understood as simplified ethnic-national tensions with religious overtones, but, as this book demonstrations, such an assessment overlooks the deeper theological and historiographical framework. Emil Hilton Saggau's book Nationalisation of the Sacred: Orthodox Historiography, Memory, and Politics in Montenegro (Peter Lang, 2023) offers a detailed analysis of the theological backdrop behind these conflicts. It analyses how various strands of Eastern Orthodoxy have adapted to the contemporary political context, a process where history, memory, and politics are transformed to fit the needs of rival nations and churches. The book provides an in-depth analysis of this process and the transformations in church-related conflicts in post-communist Montenegro, where the Serbian Orthodox Church has been pitted against a rival Montenegrin church and Montenegrin government. Additionally the book provides an up-to-date and unique analysis of Eastern Orthodox historiography, modern Serbian theology, religion in Montenegro more broadly, and the roots of the violent clash between Orthodox believers and the Montenegrin government in 2019-2021. As Ireland's oldest revolutionary movement and America's oldest transatlantic nationalist organization this is the first book covering the entire history of Clan na Gael. Formed in 1867 and existing up to the present Clan na Gael has been involved directly and indirectly in every violent revolutionary attempt for Irish independence and unification since its formation 155 years ago. Despite this long history it is the least studied and most underappreciated of Ireland's revolutionary movements. A large part of this is due to academic bias and major under appreciation as to the role of Irish America within the broader struggle for Irish independence. Clan na Gael's influence also went well beyond the borders of Ireland. Within the U.S Clan na Gael proved a major model of influence and inspiration for movements such as Zionism, Indian nationalists, African American nationalists and even the Suffragette movement among others. Seán Creagh's book The Wolfhounds of Irish-American Nationalism: A History of Clan Na Gael, 1867-Present (Peter Lang, 2023) attempts to give this long-neglected movement its proper place within the annals of Irish history as well as that of Anglo-American relations and transatlantic nationalism. To the Classroom: Conversations with Researchers & Educators
My guests today are Dr. Haeny Yoon and Dr. Lalitha Vasudevan, researchers who study play in early childhood and adolescence. We talk about the many benefits of play, the role of adults in setting up and facilitating play, and ways that play supports conceptual knowledge development as well as reading and writing skills. Later, I'm joined by colleagues Emily Strang-Campbell and Gina Dignon, as well as longtime friend Alison Porcelli, former teacher and school administrator and now a district coach, who is a co-author of two practitioner resources: Purposeful Play and Boosting English Language Acquisition in Choice Time. ****Read a full transcript of this episode and learn more about the showMore on The Practice of Listening to Children: The Challenges of Hearing Children Out in an Adult-Regulated WorldMariana Souto-Manning and Haeny Yoon, Rethinking Early Literacies: Reading and Rewriting WorldsFollow Dr. Haeny Yoon @HaenyyoonFollow Dr. Lalitha Vasudevan @Elemveee****Dr. Haeny Yoon is an Associate Professor in the Dept. of Curriculum & Teaching at Teachers College, Columbia University. She is recommitting herself to the intellectual capacity and power of teachers to create, (re)imagine, and forward public scholarship and social change. As a former elementary school educator, she has always believed that when given the space, teachers can be engaged citizens who interrupt racism and multiple exclusions inherent in school curriculum, educational policies, and teaching pedagogies. She engages in research that studies how children and teachers create spaces of play or aesthetic experiences where creativity, social relationships, and civic engagement take precedence over standardization and regulation. She lives in New York City with her husband Neal and gets inspired daily by her niece and nephew, Emmy and Max. Dr. Lalitha Vasudevan is Professor of Technology and Education in the Communication, Media, and Learning Technologies Design Program at Teachers College, Columbia University. Over the past 20 years, she has explored the intersection of adolescent literacies, media and technologies, youth culture, and juvenile justice. She engages participatory, ethnographic, and multimodal methodologies to study how youth craft stories, represent themselves, and enact ways of knowing through their engagement with literacies, technologies, and media.Lalitha has conducted a variety of studies with court-involved youth. She has also explored the pedagogical practices of inclusive and special education teachers, the literacy and identity practices of middle school adolescents inside classroom settings, and the multimodal literacy and media engagements of adolescent boys. Lalitha has co-edited two volumes that explore the intersections of youth, media, and education: Media, Learning, and Sites of Possibility and Arts, Media, and Justice: Multimodal Explorations with Youth (both published with Peter Lang), and is currently writing a book about education, multimodal play, and belonging in the lives of court-involved youth.Special thanks to Alex Van Rose for audio editing this episode. This week we go back in time 2 years ago and we spend the entire episode speaking with Professor Peter Lang of Harvard University about his rich and long career in pediatric cardiology during one of the most exciting times of the field. Dr. Lang's story includes a virtual who's who of important cardiologists and cardiac surgeons for the past 50 years including Dr. Connie Hayes, Dr. Roberta Williams, Dr. Alexander Nadas, Dr. Richard Van Praagh, Dr. Aldo Castaneda, Dr. Bill Norwood and many, many more. This is a rare opportunity to hear about the development of the Norwood procedure from someone who was at the bedside of the first 30-50 ever performed as well as someone who helped develop the entire field of cardiac critical care. Prepare to be inspired by this towering figure this week.
