This week, I'm joined by bass Barnaby Rea for a longer-than-usual opera special I mean if we're doing opera, we've gotta go long, right?!), recorded backstage at the Royal Opera House, London.Barnaby is a British/Irish bass who trained at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama and the National Opera Studio. He was a Harewood Artist at English National Opera and a member of the Oper Frankfurt solo ensemble. He has also appeared with companies including the Royal Opera House, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Zurich Opera, Teatro Real, Opéra de Lyon, Scottish Opera and Opera North. We recorded this while Barnaby was performing Doctor Grenvil in Verdi's La traviata, in Richard Eyre's long-running Royal Opera production. This episode was also partly inspired by a recent visit to Milan and the extraordinary Teatro alla Scala, which got me thinking about opera not just as music, but as architecture, social ritual, commerce, class, spectacle and power. So this is partly a conversation about opera singing, partly a look at the machinery of a major opera house, and partly an attempt to understand why opera can feel both thrillingly immediate and socially intimidating. We talk about opera vs musical theatre, why singers train for so long, how a voice can fill a huge theatre without amplification, what “placement” and resonance mean, and why vibrato is not just decorative wobbling. We also get into opera's social context: boxes, gods, stalls, ticket prices, access, prestige, and whether opera's elitist reputation is entirely fair. There's also a wider reflection on live music now: why huge arena shows can dominate the public story of the music industry while smaller venues, grassroots promoters, festivals and independent musicians are struggling. This is a longer episode than usual, but that feels fitting for opera: there is a lot of voice, history, scale and backstage machinery to get into.In this episode00:00 – Steve introduces the opera special, Barnaby Rea, the Royal Opera House and the Milan / La Scala inspiration01:35 – Barnaby's route into opera: school swing band, musical theatre, Sweeney Todd, Guys and Dolls and early training07:30 – Guildhall, opera school, learning the craft, and why opera takes so long to train for properly12:30 – Singing in different languages and understanding what you are actually saying15:40 – Opera vs musical theatre: amplification, stamina, acting, dancing and vocal demands20:45 – Inside the Royal Opera House: backstage scale, sets, docks, ballet and multiple productions24:45 – La Scala, opera boxes, social hierarchy, standing tickets and opera as mass entertainment30:05 – Arena economics, struggling grassroots venues, festivals and why smaller gigs matter36:50 – Is opera elitist? Ticket prices, access, class, prestige and opera culture in Europe42:35 – Entertaining Noises: Barnaby demonstrates the bass voice43:00 – Breath, resonance, placement, formant, range and preparing different roles50:15 – Show days, double casting, vocal recovery, travel, jump-ins and the pressure of saying yes55:00 – Berg, volume, singing without microphones, working with the room, and breathing with the orchestra01:00:30 – Vibrato: what it is, why it exists, and why it is not just decorative wobbling01:03:10 – Steve attempts a brief opera lesson01:07:40 – Learning roles, memory, punctuality, preparation and what performers can control01:12:45 – What is music for? In this windy "Walk & Talk Episode" near London's Guildhall, Gary and George dive into the science of serendipity. Inspired by the work of Dr. Christian Busch and his book Connect the Dots: The Art and Science of Creating Good Luck, Gary explains that the "lucky" breaks we see in business aren't just random coincidences—they are the result of a specific mindset and a series of "serendipity hooks."If networking is the how, serendipity is the why. This episode breaks down how to increase your "luck surface area" by being curious, breaking through the banality of small talk, and being brave enough to connect the dots between seemingly unrelated events. Whether you are a natural extrovert or a quiet introvert, you can influence your own luck by making small, 30-day habit shifts.Key takeaways from this episode:Influencing Your Luck: Luck is not magic; it's a skill. You can train yourself to spot and create opportunities by being slightly braver and significantly more curious."Goals in Concrete, Paths in Sand": Have a long-term vision, but remain flexible enough to let the "meaningful coincidences" of life change your route.Kill the "What Do You Do?" Question: To maximize serendipity, replace standard small talk with better questions like, "What's the most exciting thing you're working on right now?"The 20% Rule: Just like Google, leaders should encourage "thinking time." Productivity isn't just about doing; it's about having the space to let new ideas collide.Introverts can be "Lucky" too: You don't have to be the loudest person in the room. Serendipity can be triggered through non-verbal actions, like thoughtful LinkedIn posts or simply being present in the right "queues."Book Mentioned:Connect the Dots: The Art and Science of Creating Good Luck by Dr. Christian BuschSend us Fan MailLinks & references: https://www.thecompanydoctor.com/Gary Gamp: https://www.linkedin.com/in/garygampGeorge Clode: https://www.linkedin.com/in/georgeclodeGary's new book, Career Catalyst - available online now: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Career-Catalyst-Secret-Skills-School-ebook/dp/B0DFYVG6XY/ref=tmm_kin_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=

Silicon Bites Ep318 | 2026-04-16 | The people who wrote Britain's latest strategic defence plan just turned on the government that commissioned it. The dam of consensus broke at the Guildhall in Salisbury. A former NATO Secretary General — a man Sir Keir Starmer personally appointed to write Britain's blueprint for national defence — walked to a lectern, looked out at the room, and said:"We are underprepared. We are underinsured. We are under attack. We are not safe. Britain's national security and safety is in peril."That man is Lord George Robertson. Former Labour defence secretary. Former head of the most powerful military alliance on Earth. And the person who, alongside Fiona Hill and General Sir Richard Barrons, delivered the government's own Strategic Defence Review just ten months ago. They gave Starmer sixty-two recommendations. He accepted all of them. He promised to deliver them at — these were his words — "wartime pace." But then failed to deliver change at that speed or scale.----------SUPPORT THE CHANNEL:https://www.buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtainhttps://www.patreon.com/siliconcurtainhttps://www.gofundme.com/f/scaling-up-campaign-to-fight-authoritarian-disinformation----------SOURCES:Sky News — "'Corrosive complacency' – Lord Robertson tears into Starmer and Reeves in extraordinary intervention on defence spending" (15 April 2026) Global Defense Corp — "Welfare payments chewed the defence budget. The London skyline is undergoing perhaps its most significant transformation in decades as a new ‘vertical renaissance' is sending tremors of excitement from Guildhall to Mansion House. The City of London Corporation says that over half a million square metres of office space was granted planning permission in the City in 2025, equivalent to more than ten ‘Gherkins' with around half of this amount already under construction. This includes the leviathan 309.6m ‘1 Undershaft' which will be as tall as the Shard when completed. But it is not all about the capacity, unlike the Financial Fortresses of the 20th century, as the earlier skyscrapers in the City were sometimes called, the new structures will be more open to the street, with pedestrian access, parks and commercial arcades, to make the city feel more vibrant and less sterile, than it has to previous generations. The City's largest office building, 22 Bishopsgate has led the way in a period of challenging economic headwinds, fully occupied and seeing record high rents, it is perhaps the first of these post-financial crash, vertical villages in the Square Mile that can be considered part of this renaissance. GuildhallWealth.com/RebelNews. | On this episode of The Real Money Show, presented by Guildhall Wealth, Jeremy Wiseman and Jerry Correia explore what silver's breakout after 50 years of suppression really means. They break down forecasts calling for gold to reach $7,000–$10,000 per ounce and silver to hit $300, explaining how these “crazy” numbers suddenly make sense when considering industrial demand, de-dollarization, and a global monetary reset. Jeremy and Jerry show why holding physical metals protects investors from currency devaluation, market manipulation, and systemic financial risk and how owning segregated gold and silver outside the banking system gives investors both security and tax advantages. Finally, they explain why silver scarcity, industrial growth, and long-term cycles make this a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for investors to position themselves in physical gold and silver. The Real Money Show airs Saturdays at 1 p.m. ET on Rebel News. Jeremy and Jerry share expert insights on safeguarding your savings, diversifying your portfolio, and building long-term financial security. On this episode of The Real Money Show, presented by Guildhall Wealth, Jeremy Wiseman and Jerry Correia break down the recent surge and pullback in silver and explain why volatility and “dislocation” are classic features of a real bull market — not signs of weakness. As paper contracts were aggressively sold to meet margin calls, physical demand surged, inventories vanished, and premiums exploded worldwide. Jeremy and Jerry point to bank failures, leveraged unwinds, and collapsing derivatives as evidence that this selloff is paper carnage, not physical selling. They also examine the U.S. government's move to classify silver as a critical mineral and launch a multi-billion-dollar strategic stockpile under Project Vault, a shift that could permanently change the precious metals landscape. New York has always been – bold statement coming up – my favourite music city. No question that it's connected to my life changing discovery of the Ramones way back when. I still can't walk past the Guild Hall in my hometown of Preston without a couple of nostalgic tears forming for when I first saw them play there – I tried my best not to wash off the water that Joey threw over me when things were getting a little hot. But getting back on track… all those New York musicians over the years – infinitely different stylistically, but almost always identifiable as a New York “sound”. I don't know what it is – and hindsight's a glorious thing to have – but could the Ramones, Blondie, Public Enemy, Roxanne Shante, Lou Reed, Talking Heads, Swans, Sonic Youth, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Nas, have existed anywhere else and created their own distinctive sound yet is still a New York sound? Jesse Hartman's, Laptop, goes back to the late 90's – such a divisive decade. I really feel Laptop were ahead of their time and this is perhaps part of what makes New York New York – that ability to be ahead of the pack so often . From a twenty-foot Nordmann fir glittering in St George's Hall to recycled tinsel, charity stockings made from old Sandringham curtains and a special Radio 4 appearance by the King from Dumfries House, we take you inside the Royal Household's Christmas season. We revisit the royal family's Sandringham traditions, from Christmas Eve gifts and church at St Mary Magdalene to black-tie dinners and cards signed months in advance, and look at how King Charles the Third is blending sustainability with nostalgia. Then we track a busy second day of the German state visit, from quiet reflection at the Tomb of Queen Elizabeth the Second to Guildhall banquets, school visits and speeches at Westminster – a reminder of how royal Christmas pageantry and quiet diplomacy now sit side by side.Hear our new show "Crown and Controversy: Prince Andrew" here.Check out "Palace Intrigue Presents: King WIlliam" here.

The Wars of the Roses began their final spasm, and in this chapter we explore how Richard, Duke of Gloucester, Lord Protector of England, sitting in the mansion of a rich London Grocer near Bishopsgate, would, over a series of a few weeks, turn into Richard III, King of England. But more than the traditional narrative, it is an exploration of London in those weeks- what did they hear, what did they see, and above all, how did they respond. From mobs pouring into Westminster Abbey, to a significant moment of silence in the Guildhall, from crowds listening in stunned silence around St Paul's Cross, to cheering the coronation, London witnessed and partook in all events. How loyal were they to this man? Were they indeed, as Shakespeare later called them, his ‘duteous citizens'? Cover contains a detail of The Princes in the Tower by John Everett Millais (1878).

Originally released for Patreons in August 2024 I hope you enjoy this very special episode. In the 24th Patreon bonus podcast you join me at a magnificent building we visited back in episode 21 of the podcast, but we're doing something a little bit special. In April I found a hard drive containing audio from four investigations that I conducted in 2011 and 2012. Dozens of hours of audio that I lost around a decade ago, and I thought was lost forever. These were four absolutely incredible locations, and I have covered all four investigations - minus the audio from that night - on the podcast previously. So in the Patreon specials across June, July, August, and September I will revisit those episodes and add in the audio, which was seemingly lost forever. This time it's time to head back to York Guildhall. And the episode now includes almost 2 hours and 45 minutes of audio from that unforgettable night, so you can hear what happened, exactly as it happened. But what would happen when my team and I stepped foot inside this location on a chilly October evening in search of the spirits to be found here, including phantom monks, voices calling out in empty rooms, and a large shadowy man, who's heavy footsteps are a sure sign of his presence. Tonight, let us find out together as we ask the question, just how haunted is York Guildhall? To get episodes such as this sooner, you can become a Patreon for £3 a month, and get yourself early access to episodes, and more exclusive episodes where Rob will conduct ghost hunts and you'll hear the audio from the night. Dublin-born, Cork-based artist Laura Elizabeth Hughes released her debut album Knots & Echoes on October 3. Having started out by uploading Lana Del Rey covers to YouTube, Laura released a steady stream of singles over the years, collaborations with Cian '1000 Beasts' Sweeney and co-wrote one of Ireland's entries to Eurovision. It's all led up to her debut album, a blend of spoken word with folk fused lyricism that showcases her delicate vocal harmonies alongside melodies that shimmer with emotion. Knots & Echoes moves through the push and pull of youth and memory, where home is as much an inner landscape as it is the people and places we return to, some of them not being easy places to exist in. These pieces follow the quiet imprints others leave behind, the knots we tie, carry, and slowly work loose, through to the self-reckoning that comes with trying to carve out a space of our own. Connection, loss, and the steady but tentatively open armed shift toward selfhood run through each track; the past shaping the contours of the present for better or worse. Laura is supporting Bell X1 on their winter tour: October 24: Theatre Royal, Waterford October 25: Limetree Theatre, Limerick October 26: Spiegeltent, Wexford November 28: Guildhall, Derry November 29: Mandela Hall, Belfast December 4-5: St Nicholas' Collegiate Church, Galway December 6: Gleneagle Club, Killarney Buy Knots & Echoes: https://lauraelizabethhughes.bandcamp.com/album/knots-and-echoes

Episode 186:In this continuing series of guest episodes, it is a very welcome return to the podcast for Tim Fitzhigham. You may remember I spoke to Tim in episode 140 about his work at the Kings Lynn Guildhall where the Elizabethan period Stage had recently been uncovered and hit the headlines in the UK as a stage that Shakespeare and the Queen's Men had actually played on as they toured the country. Since then the work has continued and through the summer of 2025 it has been possible for the public to view the timber floor, which was built in 1419. If you do get to Kings Lynns and want to see what is going on at the Guildhall and the theatre do have a look at the website that I have linked to in the show notes to check on what work is currently underway and how that might affect opening times.Tim Fitzhigham is the Borough Council of Kings Lynn and West Norfolk Creative Director appointed to oversee the revival of St George's Guildhall. As well as leading this extensive project he is currently completing his PhD on Robert Armin, an actor in The King's Men who originated many of the clown and fool roles in all but the earliest Shakespeare plays and was a well-known playwright and author in his own right.Link to King's Lynne Guildhall website: https://stgeorgesguildhall.com/ Hosted on Acast. Planning for the FutureIt was Charles Stewart Parnell who said: “No man has the right to say to his country. Thus far shalt thou go and no further.” This was in the 19th century. He also declared; “Let no one set a boundary to the march of a nation.”Parnell was clearly setting out the right of the people of Ireland to self-determination. Interestingly he chose Cork to make this declaration. That was the 21st January 1885. One of the current Cork TDs and the current Taoiseach Micheál Martin has a contrary view. Our right to self-determination is contained in the Good Friday Agreement so that right has been won. We now need to exercise it. There is an irony that An Taoiseach has set his face against this and that he refuses to plan for the certain day when the Good Friday Agreement referendums will be held.Planning for the FutureIt was Charles Stewart Parnell who said: “No man has the right to say to his country. Jim is a gifted writer.‘Our Martin' is a very personal, insightful account of Martin's life in Derry and his love for his wife Bernie, and she for him, and for their children, Fionnuala, Emmet, Fiachra and Grainne.Martin said: “What politicised me was the civil rights protest. It wasn't anything I heard in the house, or even in my grandmother's house in Donegal. There was no republicanism whatsoever in my background.”‘Our Martin' by James McVeigh will be launched in Belfast at 1pm on 2 August in St. Mary's University College Belfast, as part of Féile an Phobail. Southforker Stories: The Grit and Glam of Guild Hall by Northforker Presents On
Even before Henry VIII succumbed to pressure and wedded Anne of Cleves, his attentions had turned to another lady at his court, Katherine Howard. The romance was supported by her uncle, the Duke of Norfolk, who had been trying to win back Henry's good graces ever since another one of his nieces, Anne Boleyn, had been dispatched in a Cromwellian conspiracy a few years earlier. Norfolk was clearly having a run of bad luck though, because it turns out that the teenaged Katherine - Henry was pushing 50 when all this got started - had been poorly used by a music teacher at the boarding home where she had been sent because of her family's deep poverty, and had been intimate with an age-appropriate boyfriend before being sent to Henry's court to serve as a lady-in-waiting. None of which was known to Henry when he finally wed her on July 28, 1540, the same day that he had Thomas Cromwell executed. The honeymoon was not to last, however, as by the following spring, Katherine was sharing the affections of royal counselor Thomas Culpeper, whose secret assignations with the queen were being facilitated by Jane Boleyn, Katherine's lady-in-waiting and the widow of George Boleyn, who had been executed with Anne. Everything went disastrously, of course, and Katherine Howard and Jane Boleyn were executed on the Tower Green on February 13, 1542, a few months after Culpeper and her boarding house boyfriend had experienced the same fate at the Guildhall.
