I had been really looking forward to talking to Julian Ovenden but the conversation I ended up having with him was extraordinary and unexpected. Not only is he a talented actor appearing in some of our best loved TV shows and theatre productions: Downton Abbey, Bridgerton, Foyle's War, My Night with Reg, All About Eve to name but a handful, he is also a hugely talented singer whose concerts, albums and worldwide performances have touched the hearts of many. He is a winning combination of self-deprecating, funny, and honest and he generously shared some of the best and worst periods of his life. At times hilarious, at others heartbreaking and at all times fascinating, this is an important, entertaining and ultimately uplifting conversation. I feel honoured have been part of it and to be able to share it with you. Related Links Follow Julian Ovenden Julian Ovenden - YouTube

Rays Jazz ShopRays Jazz shop was originally Collets Jazz and Folk Records " The shop moved to Shaftesbury Ave in 1974 and the following year Ray came to an agreement with Chris Barber to store and sell a vast number of mint condition 78s which Chris had picked up from a warehouse in New Jersey. They were on the Savoy, DeeGee and Bop labels, still boxed in original packaging from the late 40s, by Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Dexter Gordon, Sonny Stitt, Wardell Gray & others. The publicity raised the profile of the shop, television and radio publicity followed, and Peter Clayton interviewed Ray, with Matthew Wright, for a broadcast on the BBC World Service,In 1983, Collets wanted to move the record shop but the jazz staff – Ray, Matthew and Bob Glass - had no interest in going. Ray decided that as it had been his life for nearly thirty years, he had most to lose and was more committed to it, so he bought the lease from Collets. They closed for a few days, pulled down a wall, repositioned the counter and reopened it as Ray's Jazz Shop, ready for trading. Ray's wife, Wendy, a professional illustrator, designed the cat logo for the shop. It quickly established itself and live music sessions were held there. It was a meeting place for musicians and legendary hipster Slim Gaillard became a regular. In 2002, spiralling costs and ill health forced him to give up the lease, but thanks to the endeavours of Paul Pace, the name lives on at Foyle's in the Charing Cross Road and in the words of Georgie Fame's song “Vinyl”.In his final years he only occasionally moved out of his home area of Camden, but could be seen from time to time at gigs, usually accompanied by close friend and musician Paul Shearsmith. I am so excited to interview Cat Bohannon about her New York Times bestseller book Eve, How The Female Body Drove 200 Million Years of Human Evolution. It is recognised as Foyle's Non-Fiction Book of the Year 2023 and is a groundbreaking exploration into the female side of human biology and history, long overlooked by scientific inquiry. Delving into provocative questions—such as the roles wet nurses have played in the development of civilizations, the inherent strength of women, the evolutionary benefits of sexism, and the complex relationship between motherhood and biology—Bohannon offers a comprehensive review of female biological development over the past 200 million years. In Eve, Bohannon uses her incisive intelligence and engaging narrative style to challenge and expand our understanding of human history. She provides a crucial reevaluation that shifts focus away from male-centric studies, presenting compelling evidence on topics ranging from how modern C-sections are impacting the evolutionary shape of women's pelvises to the unexpected biochemical kinship between pus and breast milk. Her research not only revises but also enriches our understanding of why Homo sapiens have thrived, influencing everything from tool use and urban development to language. This book has been celebrated as a critical and urgent amendment to our historical narrative, earning accolades such as being longlisted for Blackwell's Non-Fiction Book of the Year 2023, and named a best book by The Guardian, Telegraph, and Prospect in 2023. Eve promises to transform your perspective on evolution and the pivotal role of the female body in the success of our species.https://www.catbohannon.com/https://www.penguin.com.au/books/eve-9781529156171Support the Show.Subscribe and support the podcast at https://www.buzzsprout.com/367319/supporters/newLearn more at www.profselenabartlett.com

The valuable work the organisation does right in the heart of the community – bringing together trained volunteers into families lives to support them both practically and emotionally, helping them to grow in confidence and empowering them with the skills to raise their children to flourish – is why Anthony chose to support this dedicated and hardworking charity. And in Anthony's own words – “For me, charity begins at Home-Start.” Anthony was awarded a CBE in 2022 for his services to literature --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/writersink/support
Pop. The way that we process everything. So, it's the summer of 1993. According to meteorological 'experts', the UK experienced its lowest maximum temperatures since 1972. Only 4 days were officially classified as 'HOT'.Well, I would argue, pop fans, that is UNLESS you had a swingorilliant copy of NOW, That's What I Call Music 25!(We'll take this quite frankly, cheesy line out in the edit - Ed.)Yes, indeed, the blue sky and wistful clouds that adorned the glorious cover of the latest variously compiled snapshot of pop invited us into a summer spectacular of hits, Hits, HITS! Some of them even reaching as high as No69!Actually, there were plenty of chart topping sounds. George and Queen were raising the (non roof) of Wem-ber-lee, Ace of Base were confusing us all about wanting babies (possibly), Gabrielle was setting chart records and certainly not mentioning fast cars and Freddie Mercury was rewizzled and jigging away. And outwith these HUGE No1s we had Tina Turner getting a leg up from Lulu, Sade not getting a leg up from Lulu, Louche Lou and Michie One channeling Lulu. Yes, the variety was indeed...(enough! Ed)(Turns page)Big IMPORTANT 90s acts such as REM (stuck in traffic), New Order (stuck in Baywatch), Duran Duran (stuck in, well, being bloody brilliant).Big DANCE choons from Sybil, Robin S (not that one) and 2 Unlimited (diminishing returns ahoy!) were keeping the frugging youngsters (and those on revolving dancefloors on boats!) moving. And Dannii and Kim were having a right old 70s revival karaoke style ding dong. Oo-er!Oh, and the campaign to completely rediscover the utter brilliance of the No42 AMAZEBALL that is 'Somewhere' by Efua starts RIGHT HERE.Join Scots pop superfan, Foyle's Bookstore's very own Niall McMurray (he's been waiting in reception) as he revisits an eventful and personal summer soundtrack; songs, music and memories that (in his own words) take him back to 'the year he will write a book about'.Along the way discover the power of provincial (and often quite terrifying) Scottish night clubs, how music always sounds better in a Fiat Panda, the song that Niall most hates in the whole world, the allure of a sinister pop flute, which NOW25 pop star is immortalised as a cardboard cut out in Iain's attic. And try to work out why it's impossible to remember the 90s when D:Ream are about!Oh, and of course, why Linda Perry, Joey Lawrence and Richard Darbyshire (and, quite frankly a few others) absolutely won't be returning our calls.(PS - the wonderful quote at the start - that's oor Niall X) Hosted on Acast. Topics illuminated: UFO Encounters, ET Experiences, Collective Consciousness, Human Evolution, Reincarnation, Positive ET Encounters, Media Perspectives, High-Frequency Information, Angelic ETs, Meditation Connection Inside today's episode, Brent Boatman (Rebecca's Father) Kailee Foyle & Rebecca Boatman share.. The desire for personal ET experiences. Collective consciousness and its connection to UFO sightings. Personal experiences with ETs, UFO's, and consciousness-based control mechanisms. The idea of reincarnation represented circles of light. The loving and positive nature of ET encounters. Hope for increased acceptance of such experiences. Media-driven fear around UFO's and the need to shift perspectives. ET's planting high-frequency information in human consciousness. The power of forgiveness as a frequency. The potential angelic and benevolent nature of ETs. Human fear contrasted with cautious ET interactions. The role of ETs in safeguarding humanity. The role of meditation and stillness in connecting with ETs. Absolutely one of my favorite episodes, as it sheds light on the experiences of those who've encountered ETs. Many people are uncertain about how to process these experiences or share them. This episode may illuminate your path. From a young age, my father instilled in me knowledge about UFOs, ETs, and their spiritual connection. With mainstream media discussing UFOs, it's crucial to delve into the benevolent aspect of this conversation. About Brent Boatman: Brent Boatman has been meditating since he was 9, which guided him years later to learn from a master in the south of France, in the Great White Brotherhood. Brent published his first book, a memoir titled UFO to IFO: To Your Galactic Family and Beyond, at the end of 2021. The book is a collection of stories and experiences from his spiritual journey over the last three decades. He is a certified QHHT L2 practitioner with Dolores Cannon Quantum Hypnosis Healing Technique and BQH certified Practitioner on expanding human consciousness and past life regression. For a change and a healing it takes desire, if you have that you can be healed of anything it's that simple. Dr Jonathan Foyle is an architectural and art historian, author and presenter. In 2012, Jonathan was contacted by Ian Coulson, an Antiques Dealer specialising in beds, who was seeking assistance in identifying the provenance of a bed which he had recently bought at auction, which had been described as 'Victorian'. In this interview Jonathan talks about how he identified the bed as that of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York, how it set off an interest in him to discover more lost Tudor treasures and the barriers which prevent many of his findings, including the bed, from being on public display.
