Today we're talking with Brenda Adelman, who is an actress, director, coach, speaker, author and creator of the one-woman show, My Brooklyn Hamlet. Having performed her show to over 12,000 people, she tells the tragic story about her family; her father murdered her mother and then remarried her mother's sister. Brenda explains how she initially kept that story hidden inside because of the shame she felt. She struggled with grief, loss, anger, and depression. Then something happened... She decided to participate in an acting class assignment that turned everything around, ultimately sparking her journey towards forgiveness. Brenda has since written a book called, My Father Killed My Mother and Married My Aunt: Forgiving the Unforgivable, and she also coaches and teaches various workshops, including how to forgive and share your own story. Brenda Adelman returns with the second in her 2-part series. In part-1 we learned the unthinkable; her father killed Brenda's mother, and then he quickly moved in with and married her mother's sister. Most of us would be paralyzed and curled in fetal position unsure of what to do after something so life-altering. It shook Brenda to her core and impacted her profoundly, but she came out of the darkness when she dared to share her story publicly. In this episode, Brenda details how she was able to share her story, what she'd do differently, and what happened as a result of her finding the courage to do so. If something BIG or profoundly transformational has happened to you and you've thought of sharing your story, she has tips about how to get started. As she says, "There are skills to learn, rewrites to be done. It's not so sexy." But it can make a difference in the way the story impacts audiences and how YOU feel good about sharing it. She discusses how to gauge feelings to know whether you're ready to share or not or to write as a form of cathartic healing. Mentioned in this episode... Today Tell Your Story. Heal Yourself.
