New figures from the latest Femicide Census out are out today. It records the killings of women. It shows that 122 women, that's more than 2 women a week, were killed by men and boys in 2022. Most women were killed by a current or former partner, but it also reveals that 10% were killed by their sons. To discuss the findings Nuala McGovern was joined by the co-founder of the Femicide Census, Dr Karen Ingala Smith.New research from Oxford University has revealed that teenagers who suffer moderate or severe period pain, are more likely to experience chronic pain as adults. What is the link at play and how can we treat women who suffer from their teen years in to adulthood? We hear about the findings from Katy Vincent, Professor of Gynaecological Pain and Consultant Gynaecologist and she explains what this can teach us about mitigating pain in sufferers.Eve Myles is a Welsh actress, whose television roles include Ceri Lewis in the BBC Wales drama series Belonging, Gwen Cooper in the BBC science-fiction series Torchwood and the formidable lawyer Faith Howells in the bilingually produced drama series Keeping Faith. Eve discusses her character Fran in The Guest - a new four-part, propulsive thriller on BBC One. It centres on the toxic and beguiling relationship between a successful business owner, Fran and her employee, Ria.Between 1949 and 1976, thousands of pregnant women and girls in the UK were sent away to "prison-like" homes run by the church and state and had their babies put up for adoption. This week sees ITV's Long Lost Family Special: The Mother and Baby Home Scandal - which follows three families as they search for their relative. One of those is Jean who was 16 when she was sent to a mother and baby home in 1956. After giving birth she unwillingly handed over her baby for adoption. Jean's eldest daughter, Cathy was found by the programme. We hear from Cathy and the programme's director Helen Nixon.Who was Scotland's first, largely forgotten, female MP? The Duchess of Atholl had campaigned against votes for women but in 1923 she stood for election herself, and won. Her biographer Amy Gray joins Nuala to address the many contradictions of this pioneering politician. In her new book, Red Duchess: A Rebel in Westminster, Gray argues that Atholl hasn't received the credit she deserves for championing the welfare of women and children at home and abroad and for challenging the appeasement of Nazi Germany - a decision which ended her political career.Presenter: Nuala McGovern Producer: Kirsty Starkey

Maar haar man?

On July 4th, searchers from Buscadoras por la Paz Sonora made a devastating discovery near Highway 36 in Sonora, Mexico—three little girls found murdered, dressed in pajamas, holding one another. A day earlier, their mother's body had been found nearby, executed and discarded. In this episode, we uncover the chilling timeline of betrayal and violence that led to the femicide of 28-year-old Margarita Tapia Trujillo and her daughters—11-year-old twins Meredith and Medellín, and 9-year-old Karla. The perpetrator wasn't a stranger. He was someone they trusted. Someone who used love, protection, and even life insurance as tools of manipulation and control. We also hear from the girls' father, the collective that found them, and the growing community fighting to call this violence what it is: femicide. This is the femicide of Margarita, Meredith, Medellín, and Karla Tapia Trujillo. Ya disponible en Spotify, Apple Podcasts y todas las plataformas de streaming.—-Link + Sources:Infobae: https://www.infobae.com/mexico/2025/07/06/asesinan-a-tres-hermanas-menores-de-edad-en-sonora-investigan-posible-hallazgo-de-su-madre-muerta/Infobae: https://www.infobae.com/mexico/2025/07/07/cronologia-de-la-desaparicion-esto-es-lo-que-se-sabe-del-caso-de-las-hermanitas-halladas-sin-vida-en-sonora/Infobae: https://www.infobae.com/mexico/2025/07/08/despiden-a-la-madre-y-las-hermanitas-que-fueron-asesinadas-en-sonora/NMas: https://youtu.be/Gi7NNG_Dxx0?si=W-o-5AAfaXqo2cvnImagen Noticias: https://youtu.be/n-i5dzhVoZk?si=0ljU-piVFmbHBfRjAzteca Noticia: https://youtu.be/mkhLnvTAjC8?si=S77Ib33XDtLBmsiBGrupo Formula: https://youtu.be/pf2TRAd8pGY?si=emxiL-fqhTtGOjsBGrupo Formula: https://youtu.be/zg3po0Lr6J0?si=FXJv_nP15wYvAtQkMichelle Rivera on X: Video of Father SpeakingLa Silla Rota: https://lasillarota.com/estados/2025/7/8/un-seguro-de-vida-la-linea-tras-el-feminicidio-de-margarita-sus-hijas-544598.htmlTribuna Sonora on X: Video of FuneralTribuna Sonora: https://www.tribuna.com.mx/seguridad/2025/7/7/video-me-dejaron-solo-padre-de-las-tres-ninas-asesinadas-en-hermosillo-clama-justicia-406675.htmlTribuna Sonora: https://www.tribuna.com.mx/seguridad/2025/7/6/capturan-al-principal-sospechoso-del-asesinato-de-madre-sus-tres-hijas-en-hermosillo-406609.htmlTribuna Sonora: https://www.tribuna.com.mx/seguridad/2025/7/4/hallan-mujer-muerta-orillas-de-carretera-en-hermosillo-tenia-huellas-de-violencia-406473.htmlTribuna Sonora: https://www.tribuna.com.mx/seguridad/2025/7/7/fgjes-vinculan-proceso-al-presunto-asesino-de-las-tres-ninas-su-madre-en-hermosillo-406723.htmlAristegui Noticias: https://youtu.be/XFi40tlm5lQ?si=HKMqoDls5cQicM9ZAristegui Noticias: https://youtu.be/8PzwQtWgv3Q?si=eDMOgf2IJTKtNVNMMilenio: https://youtu.be/EDa7OCeGTpM?si=1k0LqhfMJmx5w9D2CNN en Español: https://youtu.be/oQ5i3YvwuYQ?si=G7kPVFR1l2BLuIkJMTP Noticias: https://mtpnoticias.com/dolor-y-sangre/policia/meredith-y-medellin-abrazaron-a-su-hermanita-antes-de-ser-ejecutadas-en-hermosillo-sonora/Luis Alberto Medina: https://x.com/elalbertomedina/status/1942720853424365807Luis Alberto Medina: https://x.com/elalbertomedina/status/1944565967495082256Nacho Lozada: https://x.com/nacholozano/status/1942444602201432467La Costilla Rota: https://lacostillarota.com/2025/07/08/justicia-para-meredith-medellin-karla-y-margarita-indigna-feminicidio-de-madre-y-sus-tres-hijas-en-sonora/https://fb.watch/AYxqrGZuzT/ (reference to the life insurance policy)Proceso:  https://www.proceso.com.mx/nacional/estados/2025/7/5/ejecutan-tres-ninas-en-sonora-buscadoras-encontraron-los-cuerpos-baleados-354343.htmlFuerza Informacion Azteca: https://www.tvazteca.com/aztecanoticias/realizan-funeral-las-3-ninas-y-madre-asesinadas-en-sonora-cronologia-del-casoEXCELSIOR: https://youtu.be/-cc9BZk-muA?si=zsqsrHy0AqeI6_rMAl Dia Dallas News: https://www.dallasnews.com/espanol/al-dia/mexico/2025/07/14/asesinato-ninas-hermosillo-hermanas-miguel-aleman/—- Distributed by Genuina Media — Follow Us:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/SVSM_PodcastThreads: https://www.threads.net/@svsm_podcastTwitter/ X: https://www.twitter.com/SVSM_PodcastBlueSky: https://bsky.app/profile/svsmpodcast.bsky.socialFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/SoViolentoSoMacabroPodcastTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@svsm_podcastYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@svsm_podcast

Pregnancy should be a time of joy and anticipation, but for thousands of American women each year, it becomes the most dangerous period of their lives. In this eye-opening conversation with Professor Elizabeth Tobin-Tyler of Brown University, we explore the shocking reality that homicide is a leading cause of traumatic death for pregnant and postpartum women, accounting for 31% of maternal injury deaths.Professor Tobin-Tyler draws on her unique background spanning both law and public health to explain how pregnancy often triggers escalating violence in abusive relationships. When an abuser's need for control meets the shifting attention and resources that accompany pregnancy, the results can be deadly—particularly for Black women, who die at five times the rate of white women from homicide during pregnancy. We dive into the complex systems that fail pregnant survivors, from healthcare settings where brief appointments and the presence of abusers make disclosure difficult, to legal frameworks that inadequately protect women from armed abusers. The conversation explores innovative solutions like medical-legal partnerships that bring lawyers into healthcare settings to address both medical and social determinants of health simultaneously. The ripple effects of this violence extend far beyond individual families. Children exposed to domestic violence face lifelong health consequences, creating an estimated $8 billion annual economic burden across healthcare, education, and criminal justice systems. Despite these staggering costs, funding for research and services continues to face cuts. You'll come away from this conversation with a new understanding of how Medicaid access, firearm regulations, and community-based services can save lives, along with practical advice for supporting pregnant survivors in your own community. Professor Tobin-Tyler challenges us all to stop normalizing violence against women and to recognize pregnant women as valuable human beings in their own right—not just as vessels for their children.

Identifying Patterns of Abuse: A Situational Awareness Approach

What warning signs did we all miss? In the wake of Gabby Petito's tragic murder by her fiancé Brian Laundrie, situational awareness expert Kelly Sayre joins host Maria MacMullin to fulfill Joe Petito's call to action—using his daughter's story as a learning tool to help others recognize the dangerous patterns of abuse before they turn deadly.Kelly breaks down abusive behaviors through the lens of situational awareness, defining it as "using all your senses and intuition to notice when something is off in your environment, understanding what it means to your safety, and taking action." This framework provides listeners with practical tools to identify potentially dangerous relationships, whether in their own lives or those of loved ones. The conversation examines specific red flags from Gabby's relationship: her tendency to take all blame during the Moab police encounter, Brian's tactics to isolate her from friends and family, his financial abuse that undermined her independence, and the controlling behaviors disguised as concern. Most importantly, Kelly emphasizes that severe domestic violence rarely begins with physical attacks—it starts with psychological manipulation that gradually escalates.Perhaps most powerful is the discussion about intuition as a biological safety mechanism. "Intuition is not a prankster," Kelly explains. "It's simply trying to let you know something in your environment is off." Both experts encourage listeners to trust that gut feeling when something doesn't seem right in a relationship, as this instinct exists to preserve our safety.Whether you're concerned about your own relationship or trying to support someone you love, this episode offers crucial insights into recognizing abuse patterns early. Trust your intuition, maintain your boundaries, and remember that knowledge is power when it comes to personal safety. Share this episode with someone who needs to hear it—it could save a life.

What happens when your abuser carries a badge and a gun? For victims of officer-involved domestic violence, the journey to safety becomes a dangerous maze with few exits. Bruce Bieber joins us with the heartbreaking story of his daughter Abby – a rising star deputy sheriff who was murdered by her intimate partner, himself a detective in the same sheriff's office. This wasn't a random tragedy but the culmination of systemic failure, as her killer had previously been reported for domestic violence years earlier, only to have the incident swept under the rug. Through tears and determination, Bruce reveals how his quest for answers uncovered layers of institutional protection that prioritized shielding officers over protecting victims. When he discovered that approximately 40% of police families experience domestic abuse – potentially hundreds of thousands of households – he transformed his grief into purpose. The parallels between Abby's case and countless others expose a chilling pattern: documentation disappears, investigations vanish, and perpetrators not only remain employed but often advance in their careers. Questions about the failure of fellow officers to intervene when Abby was killed reveal uncomfortable truths about the "blue wall of silence" that protects abusers in uniform. Bruce is now fighting for legislation requiring Florida's law enforcement agencies to adopt protocols for handling cases when the abuser wears a badge. His urgent message resonates beyond one family's tragedy: if we immediately act when officers commit robbery or deal drugs, why do we still treat domestic violence as a private matter rather than the crime it is? Share this powerful episode with someone who needs to hear it, and join us in breaking the silence around officer-involved domestic violence.

We're honored to welcome Nichole Schmidt to Toxic today — a friend of the pod and a fierce advocate for survivors, especially young survivors of dating violence. In 2021, her 22-year-old daughter, Gabby Petito, was murdered by her boyfriend, Brian Laundrie, during what was supposed to be an idyllic cross-country van trip — and instead became a national tragedy. This past February, Netflix released American Murder: Gabby Petito, a docuseries featuring never-before-seen details about how Gabby's story unfolded. Ultimately, she became yet another preventable victim of dating violence, strangulation — and, yes, femicide. Just two weeks before her death, police in Moab, Utah, pulled the couple over after a witness saw Brian hit Gabby. Despite clear signs of abuse — and officers even identifying it as assault — Laundrie wasn't arrested. Instead, they named Gabby the primary aggressor and gave Brian a hotel room usually reserved for domestic violence victims. The incident laid bare just how much law enforcement — and society — still doesn't understand about abuser tactics. A little over a month later, Brian strangled Gabby to death in Wyoming. He later scribbled a confession in a notebook before dying by suicide — because, of course, accountability was never on his itinerary. Today, Nichole shares what life has been like since Gabby's death — and how she's working to keep her daughter's memory alive, one survivor at a time. We want to hear from you. Do you have a story we need to discuss or a guest we should feature? Visit us at ToxicThePodcast.com and share your story. If you're experiencing abuse or domestic violence, please reach out to someone you trust. You can also connect with a trained advocate near you through DomesticShelters.org. In January 2024, protests erupted across Nairobi, Kisumu and Mombasa as Kenyans demanded justice for women killed in a wave of femicides. The government promised action, launching a 90 day task force to deliver recommendations to President William Ruto. But that deadline has long passed and there's still no clear plan. BBC Africa Daily's Mpho Lakaje speaks to feminist activist Editar Ochieng and policy expert Kavinya Makau to explore why progress has stalled, what's happening behind the scenes and their thoughts on whether Kenya is truly committed to ending femicide.
