Hawk shares global statistics on intimate partner violence and femicide, noting that roughly 140 women per day are murdered by romantic partners or family members worldwide, and that women face intimate partner homicide at a rate ten times higher than men in the United States. Drawing on three real cases from his early legal career in Mansfield, Ohio, Hawk describes clients who had active restraining orders and still lost their lives. One woman died when her husband filled their home with gas and she unknowingly lit a candle. Another was beaten to death in a parking lot with a tire iron. A third was shot in front of her five children by a husband who borrowed a weapon from a sheriff's deputy who was fully aware of the restraining order and domestic violence charges. The cases raise serious questions about how courts and law enforcement handle firearms in domestic violence situations, how dangerous separation can be for women, and what patterns of male violence against women reveal about systemic failure. In 2024, the mass‑rape trial of Dominique Pelicot - who was tried alongside 50 other French men - shocked the world. The father of three was found guilty of drugging and raping his wife, Gisèle, over a ten‑year period, and of inviting other men he met online to rape and abuse her as well. After a 16‑week trial, Pelicot was sentenced to 20 years in prison. It was a case so shocking that one would be forgiven for assuming this type of sexual abuse is rare. However, a new investigation by CNN journalists Saskya Vandoorne and Niamh Kennedy has found that Pelicot is not alone. The pair spent several months undercover, investigating an underground network of men who exchange information and advice on how to drug and rape their wives and partners and who then share the images and videos they create with one another. In today's episode, Kennedy and Vandoorne join Róisín Ingle to discuss what they uncovered inside a secret Telegram group, how their investigation brought them to Poland, and what they heard from some of the women who have been victims of this type of crime. You can watch their investigation on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zE_kzRs1wTEAnd you can read more here: https://edition.cnn.com/interactive/2026/03/world/expose-rape-assault-online-vis-intl/index.htmlBut first, Irish Times opinion editor Jennifer O'Connell is here to discuss some of the biggest stories of the week including the guilty verdict that came this week in the Natalie McNally murder trial and what can be done about Northern Ireland's alarming femicide rate. What is femicide? Thanks for asking! Many countries reported increased gender-based violence during recent coronavirus lockdowns. Femicides are the most extreme form of such crimes against women, and they have been on the rise for many years now. The term dates back centuries, but has taken on a new meaning in recent decades, with feminists placing emphasis on the specific nature and intent of femicide. It has gradually been adopted by international organisations like the United Nations and World Health Organisation. If a man kills a woman, is it automatically a femicide then? The murder of a woman isn't always femicide, even if committed by a man. Femicide refers specifically to murders carried out because the victim is a woman. The WHO published an information sheet on the subject in 2012, providing details of several different types of cases. The most common is intimate femicide, which is committed by a current partner or ex partner. Worldwide, these account for 35% of all murders of women in the world. A study by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime found that 87,000 women were murdered in 2017, with 58% being killed by an intimate partner or family member. By the same logic, non-intimate femicide is when the murderer and victim do not have an intimate relationship. This includes killings linked to a sexual assault and antifeminist murders, for example. Other types of femicide include dowry-related murders and honour killings.  Are there specific laws on femicide? Luisteren dus! Femicide is not just a word. It's a tragedy, and a manifestation of the deep-rooted inequality women face in every corner of society. It's not just the tragic end of a life; it's the culmination of years of violence, abuse, and power imbalances that have been allowed to fester unchecked.Unfortunately, despite legal advancements, femicides remain a persistent issue across Europe. Some countries have introduced comprehensive laws to combat gender-based violence. But others still lack legal recognition of femicide as a distinct crime. In turn, the lack of official data about femicides in several countries further obscures the true scale of the problem. So, why, then, is the legal recognition of femicides a taboo? And, beyond that, are we doing enough as societies to respond effectively to femicides? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

We dive into the harrowing reality of femicide and gender-based violence, questioning the role of patriarchal societies and religious dogma in upholding the subjugation and objectification of women. We examine how Abrahamic religions maintain ancient customs that often treat women as property, noting this degradation has existed for thousands of years. The discussion analyzes the ethical flaws in systems that place restrictions on women based on how men behave (a classic case of victim blaming). Finally, we explore whether legislative changes—such as Italy defining femicide—truly address the core cultural problem of pervasive gender oppression.News Source:Italy Implements Femicide Law and UN Report on Global Violence Against WomenBy [Author not provided] for CNN and YouTube[Date not provided]

Your rejections are reaching for things that maybe aren't easy reaches," says Christa Hillstrom, writer of 14,445 and Counting for The Atavist. It's that Atavistian time of the month. Not much by way of spoilers, but you know you're in for a double dose of CNFin' insights as we will hear from editor-in-chief Seyward Darby and, of course, the writer of this month's feature, Christa Hillstrom. Her story is titled 14,445 and Counting: Inside a Texas nurse's quest to document the life and death of every woman killed by a man in America. You can read the story at magazine.atavist.com. The Italian Parliament has voted unanimously to introduce the crime of femicide, the murder of a woman motivated by gender, as a distinct law to be punished with a life sentence. It makes Italy one of very few places in the world to categorise femicide as a distinct crime. The BBC's Senior Reporter Laura Gozzi tells Anita Rani why this has been voted in. There was a lot of anticipation and debate about what the Budget would include for women and how it would affect them. There has been a close watch on the two-child benefit cap, which it's been announced will be lifted, pensions and of course the cost of living. Now the final numbers are in, Anita discusses the Budget with Sarah Pennells, consumer finance specialist with the Royal London pensions and investment company, and Erin Mansell from the feminist economics group The Women's Budget. Pam Hogg, the legendary Scottish fashion designer, known for her eccentric and outlandish designs, has died. She dressed everyone from Rihanna, to Bjork to Lady Gaga. Her family, said in a statement that the trailblazing designer's creative spirit and body of work has ‘touched the lives of many.' Anita is joined by journalist Kate Hutchinson to discuss her style and her legacy. Cassa Pancho founded Ballet Black in 2001. She was 21 at the time and it was in response to the fact that no black or Asian women were performing in any of the UK's ballet companies. This week Ballet Black conclude their UK tour of SHADOWS at London's Sadler's Wells and features as part of its double bill Cassa's adaptation of Oyinkan Braithwaite's international bestselling novel, My Sister, The Serial Killer. Grace Walker is the author of a new speculative dystopian novel, The Merge. It's set at a time when the Earth's resources have been pushed to breaking point and there's a new controversial procedure in which two people's consciousness can be combined to exist in one body. Grace explains to Anita where the idea came from and her love of dystopian fiction. Black women are six times more likely to be murdered by intimate partners than white women. Let that sink in.Dr. Miltonette Craig pulls back the curtain on this hidden crisis in our powerful conversation about intimate partner violence and media representation. As an assistant professor at Sam Houston State University and research coordinator for the Crime Victims Institute, Dr. Craig brings both academic rigor and genuine compassion to this critical discussion. The statistics are staggering – approximately 43% of Black women report experiencing intimate partner violence compared to 30% of white women. But statistics only tell part of the story. Dr. Craig expertly unpacks the complex sociocultural factors creating this disparity: economic barriers that trap women in abusive relationships, the "loyalty trap" where Black women hesitate to report abuse for fear of contributing to mass incarceration, and deep-seated mistrust of law enforcement that discourages seeking help.Perhaps most troubling is how media coverage perpetuates these problems. Through her groundbreaking research, Dr. Craig reveals how news stories about Black female victims often lack context, resources, and the critical analysis needed to understand this epidemic. We discuss a particularly disturbing case where two Black women were murdered by their husbands during conjugal visits at the same prison facility within months of each other – yet media coverage remained superficial and disconnected from the larger pattern of violence. This episode isn't just about identifying problems – Dr. Craig offers concrete solutions for journalists, newsrooms, and media consumers. From including crisis resources in every domestic violence story to diversifying newsroom staff, these actionable steps could literally save lives.Whether you work in media, advocacy, or simply care about creating a more just society, this conversation will transform how you understand intimate partner violence and the power of representation. Listen now, and join us in demanding better for Black women and all survivors of domestic violence.

What makes someone capable of killing the person they claim to love? Dr. David Adams has spent over four decades searching for answers by interviewing both survivors and perpetrators of intimate partner violence. As co-founder of Emerge, the world's first counseling program for men who abuse women, Adams takes us behind the facade of abusive relationships to expose the calculated tactics abusers use to trap their victims. The patterns he's uncovered are chilling: 75% of men who eventually murdered their partners began with first-date sex, and the average courtship before moving in together was just three months. These aren't coincidences but deliberate strategies of control.Adams walks us through the four phases of abusive relationships—from the deceptive "honeymoon phase" of excessive attention and romance through escalating control, normalized violence, and ultimately deadly threats. Perhaps most disturbing is his revelation that many killers found "comfort" in knowing murder was an option if their partner tried to leave.Drawing from both professional expertise and personal tragedy (Adams lost his mother to domestic violence at age 17), this conversation offers rare insight into the minds of abusers while providing practical knowledge that could save lives. Whether you work in law enforcement, victim services, or simply want to understand the warning signs of dangerous relationships, this episode provides crucial information about how to recognize entrapment strategies before they turn deadly.

New figures from the latest Femicide Census out are out today. It records the killings of women. It shows that 122 women, that's more than 2 women a week, were killed by men and boys in 2022. Most women were killed by a current or former partner, but it also reveals that 10% were killed by their sons. To discuss the findings Nuala McGovern was joined by the co-founder of the Femicide Census, Dr Karen Ingala Smith.New research from Oxford University has revealed that teenagers who suffer moderate or severe period pain, are more likely to experience chronic pain as adults. What is the link at play and how can we treat women who suffer from their teen years in to adulthood? We hear about the findings from Katy Vincent, Professor of Gynaecological Pain and Consultant Gynaecologist and she explains what this can teach us about mitigating pain in sufferers.Eve Myles is a Welsh actress, whose television roles include Ceri Lewis in the BBC Wales drama series Belonging, Gwen Cooper in the BBC science-fiction series Torchwood and the formidable lawyer Faith Howells in the bilingually produced drama series Keeping Faith. Eve discusses her character Fran in The Guest - a new four-part, propulsive thriller on BBC One. It centres on the toxic and beguiling relationship between a successful business owner, Fran and her employee, Ria.Between 1949 and 1976, thousands of pregnant women and girls in the UK were sent away to "prison-like" homes run by the church and state and had their babies put up for adoption. This week sees ITV's Long Lost Family Special: The Mother and Baby Home Scandal - which follows three families as they search for their relative. One of those is Jean who was 16 when she was sent to a mother and baby home in 1956. After giving birth she unwillingly handed over her baby for adoption. Jean's eldest daughter, Cathy was found by the programme. We hear from Cathy and the programme's director Helen Nixon.Who was Scotland's first, largely forgotten, female MP? The Duchess of Atholl had campaigned against votes for women but in 1923 she stood for election herself, and won. Her biographer Amy Gray joins Nuala to address the many contradictions of this pioneering politician. In her new book, Red Duchess: A Rebel in Westminster, Gray argues that Atholl hasn't received the credit she deserves for championing the welfare of women and children at home and abroad and for challenging the appeasement of Nazi Germany - a decision which ended her political career.Presenter: Nuala McGovern Producer: Kirsty Starkey
