Today's guest is Matt Pless of Baltimore, MD. This is his second time on the show. He's well known within the folk punk world for his songs like “When the Frayed Wind Blows” among others. I wanted to get him back on the show because he's got a new album out called “Cheap Shots On The Rocks.” I featured my favorite song off of it called “Love & Drugs.” -- Part-Time Rockstar Fest is June 4th in Baltimore, MD https://fb.me/e/4HK7yxaF6
Sidney Abernathy is a folk/alternative country signer originally from Colorado. Now residing in Mexico. I first got acquainted with her music after seeing former guest and friend of the show Matt Pless do a write up of her new album. And was pretty much hooked after that. I've featured two of her songs on this episode. One is called "Medicine" and the one at the end of the show is called "Miss You." They are my favorite tracks off of album No Return Address. As a lyricist Sidney has everything I admire in a song writer. I hate using the word haunting but if there was ever a time to use it, her album would probably be it. There's depth and sadness juxtaposed with humor and tongue in cheek sarcasm. Intermingled with the classic elements of old american outlaw country. But most importantly her songs are genuine and real. So if you're into maybe the “off the beaten path side of country,” you'll probably dig it. Thanks for listening. Links below. Today my guest is Matt Pless, a punk/folk/protest musician that I first encountered at Occupy Wall St, which we reflect on a bit, in addition to the standard questions I get into with every musician. Like many other artists I've interviewed, it's a goddamned national tragedy that Matt isn't more widely known. https://www.mattpless.com/ From his bio: Combining elements of folk, punk, pop and rock, Matt Pless can lyrically turn a phrase with the best of them and has been compared to some of the preeminent songwriters of our time. A consummate performer with a high-energy stage presence, Matt Pless travels the road continuously entertaining and astounding his audiences. The moody orchestra is a project of Amsterdam based, German singer- songwriter Tobias Oeckler. While mostly playing live on his own, his recorded works reach from fragile songwriting craft to collaborated tunes in more ,orchestrated’ garments, so to say. His latest albums ‚a big step’ and ‚aum’, that he simultaneously self-produced, clearly show this vibrant mix of contradicting opposites. His songs are characterized by their personal and poetic lyrics, sometimes cryptic and mysterious, sometimes chrystal clear, but almost always carried out in a cleansing melancholic mood. Combining elements of folk, punk, pop and roots rock, Matt Pless can lyrically turn a phrase with the best of them. He has been compared to some of the top songwriters of our time, including John Lennon, Paul Simon, John Prine and Bob Dylan. Known for his engaging and thought-provoking, witty, word labyrinths, Matt's music spans topics from love and loss to social commentary to ethereal train-of-thought abstractions, and everything in between. Songwriters Guild Live is a weekly radioshow in Amsterdam, focussed on artists who write their own songs. This week your host was Ro Halfhide.
One of the first Punk Rock bands Will ever saw live was fronted by Matt Pless. Matt tells Will about his days as the front man of 3 Prong Outlet, the early Maryland punk rock scene, working with SR-71 Frontman Mitch Allan, and how after his band fell apart he found new musical inspiration and made a name for himself in the DIY Folk Punk Scene. My guest this week is Matt Pless. We talk about our early days making music in Baltimore County, finding an audience in the folk-punk scene, his struggle with being labeled as the 'occupy wall street' act and going on tour for two years. Recorded at The Lineup Room. Artwork by Mike Riley Comics.
