THANKS TO ANDREW FOR MAKING THE INTRO SONG. (soundcloud.com / andoryukesuta)@andoryukesuta On October 30, 1977, amateur criminals Killer Karl and Richard Wick attempt an armed robbery at a gas station/horror museum, but are killed by the owner, Captain Spaulding, and his assistant, Ravelli. Later that night, Jerry Goldsmith, Bill Hudley, Mary Knowles, and Denise Willis are on the road in hopes of writing a book on offbeat roadside attractions. When the four meet Spaulding, who is also the owner of "The Museum of Monsters & Madmen", they learn of the local legend of Dr. Satan. As they take off in search of the tree from which Dr. Satan was hanged, they pick up a young free-spirited hitchhiker named Baby, who claims to live only a few miles away. Shortly after, a mysterious figure appears hidden in some overgrowth and shoots out their vehicle's tire with a shotgun. The group thinks it is just a blown out tire and so Baby takes Bill to her family's house to get a tow truck. Moments later, Baby's half-brother, Rufus, picks up the stranded passengers and takes them to the family home. There, they meet Baby's family: her adopted brother Otis Driftwood, her deformed giant half-brother Tiny, Mother Firefly, and Grandpa Hugo. While being treated to dinner, Mother Firefly explains that her ex-husband, Earl, had previously tried to burn Tiny alive, along with the Firefly house after he suffered a psychotic breakdown. After dinner, the family puts on a Halloween show for their guests and Baby offends Mary by flirting with Bill. After Mary threatens Baby, Rufus tells them their car is repaired. As the couples leave, Otis and Tiny, disguised as scarecrows, attack them in the driveway and take them captive. The next day, Otis kills Bill and mutilates his body for art. Mary is tied up in a room and tormented by Otis, Denise is tied to a bed dressed up as a doll for Halloween, and Jerry is partially scalped for failing to guess Baby's favorite movie star. When Denise doesn't come home, her father Don calls the police to report her missing. Two deputies, George Wydell and Steve Naish, find the couples' abandoned car in a field with a dead, mutilated cheerleader in the trunk (one of five cheerleaders who went missing over a week ago, as explained in a news broadcast; an earlier scene established that the cheerleaders were being tortured, raped and killed by the Firefly family). Don, a former policeman, is called to the scene to help the deputies search. They arrive at the Firefly house and Wydell questions Mother Firefly about the missing teens. Mother Firefly shoots Wydell in the head and kills him; Don and Steve are then killed by Otis when they find more bodies of missing cheerleaders in the barn, along with a barely conscious Mary. Later that night, the three remaining teenagers are dressed as rabbits and taken out to an abandoned well. Otis torments Denise using the skin of her dead father's face as a mask. Mary attempts to run away, but is tracked down and stabbed to death by Baby moments later. Otis and the family burn the bodies on a pyre.

We're winding down spooky season with a live 20th anniversary review of Rob Zombie's House of 1000 Corpses!Ian and AC dig up the knotted roots of the Firefly family tree. Before Baby, Captain Spaulding, and Otis went on the lam in The Devil's Rejects, they ran the titular roadside attraction of deadly mayhem. When a group of hapless thrill-seekers stops for the night, they discover that all the bones, blood, and bizarre creatures inside are far more than realistic special effects!Join us for a look back at Zombie's directorial debut, which was wracked with interference, delays, and rickety release, which all but guaranteed its "cult" status! This week on New Release (episode #158) … bonebags Ashley and Drew hop aboard Captain Spaulding's fried chicken and murder ride. House of 1000 Corpses is pretty much what you'd expect—in the best way—from Rob Zombie's moving making debut. His hardcore rock and horror sensibilities and sick sense of humor all shine through in this Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Music Video production. We talk about whether our appetites for blood and fish guts were satisfied by this freak show or if there's still meat left on the bone. Are the villains of this movie more interesting and sympathetic than the victims? Is that bad? All I know is it feels good to be talking horror again. Keep up with the program by searching ‘New Release' on Spotify or Apple and hitting subscribe. Next week is Ashley's mystery bday movie… Get full access to New Release at newrelease.substack.com/subscribe

We watched House of 1000 Corpses and were impressed by the use of stock footage and new footage made to look like fucked out stock footage. @dgoebel00 on Instagram provided this amazing artwork. Follow him and check out his website. https://youtu.be/OiRQOpC0nhg Synopsis House of 1000 Corpses is the story of some 20 somethings on a road trip around the US on a mission to find gas station oddities and fright museums. They stumble upon Captain Spaulding's museum of monsters and madmen and end up flies in the web of the firefly family. The firefly family are a group of twisted, backwater Texans who torture and kill unsuspecting kids on outings in their car. The kids are treated to the extensive horrors around the firefly family property before they are picked off one by one. If this sounds like a Texas Chainsaw Massacre ripoff, that's because it is. Had it been made with the tiniest bit of skill or nuance, it might have been able to get away with being called an homage or a tribute, but alas, ripoff will have to do. Review House of 1000 Corpses is quite a sideshow. It's the first of writer / director Rob Zombie's feature films, and the start of an obsession for the musician. It seems like Rob saw films like Texas Chainsaw, Halloween, and Salem's Lot, as a child and wondered to himself, “What goes on in the parts of these movies that I don't get to see? Why is Michael the way he is? What other weird things happen in the Cannibal's house?” And he had to create the lore that he so desperately desired to see. To be fair, those are awesome questions. Who wouldn't want to see what happens in Texas Chainsaw the day after the massacre? As it turns out, the answer is me. I don't care about the reality behind the mysteries being shown to me nearly as much as I enjoy being allowed to let my mind wander around those creepy questions. Once you answer the question of why Michael is the way he is, I hate the outcome. Watch House of 1000 CorpsesBuy or Rent on AmazonClick Here to Watch Apart from this fundamental issue with digging up and rehashing old movies that are arguably the best of their kind ever made, the House of 1000 Corpses is a trainwreck. It's Americana turned up to 11 and drenched in neon gas station colors, and it smells like the armpit of the oldest, nastiest man you've ever sat next to on the bus. The acting is pitiable as soon as Sheri Moon shows up and awesome when old pro's like Sid Haig grace the screen. The story is tenuous and boring, the violence is schlocky, the comedy is raunchy. It's not my cup of tea, but for what it is, it's pretty influential. Some would say that it was one of the most over-the-top entries in the gore-porn genre of the 2000's. I would disagree with those people, but still. Anyone sitting down to watch a movie called House of 1000 Corpses will get exactly what they were expecting, that much is certain. Score 2/10
Subscribe to Quotomania on Simplecast or search for Quotomania on your favorite podcast app!Groucho was born Julius Henry Marx on Oct 2 1890 in New York. He was the third of the five surviving sons of Sam and Minnie Marx. He was the first of the brothers to start a stage career aged 15 in an act called The Leroy Trio. Other acts followed, but none of them was a great success. Twice the other members of the act disappeared overnight and left him penniless in places far away from home. When his Brothers came on stage they finally had success with the musical comedy called I'll Say She Is. It was at one of the performances of this show that Groucho got his painted moustache. He arrived late at the theater and used greasepaint to create a moustache. He found this so much easier than a glued-on moustache that he insisted on using this technique from then on. I'll Say She Is is was followed by two more Broadway hits - The Cocoanuts and Animal Crackers. The latter of which has the character of Captain Spaulding which remained (with the song Hooray for Captain Spaulding) a trademark for Groucho for the rest of his life. The Cocoanuts and Animal Crackers were also the first movies (except for one unreleased) made by the Brothers and were filmed in New York. The remaining movies were made in Hollywood. In the later years of the Brothers movie career Groucho started working on radio. He hosted several programmes and was a guest on many shows. His biggest success was the comedy quiz show You Bet Your Life which started in 1947. The show later moved to television and was on the air until 1961.Groucho also appeared in a few movies without his brothers. Always being a liberal, Groucho sometimes made critical remarks about politics and had friends who were regarded as communist by the US of the 1950s. In E73, we venture through the gory, insane funhouse that is Rob Zombie's House of 1000 Corpses (2003). Join Lauren, Jared, and Intern Andrew as we chat about the pure unconventionality of the editing and narrative style in this film, Sid Haig's beloved performance as Captain Spaulding, and why (or, in a certain somebody's case, why not) this film is a foundational horror film. In Bombay harbor, Tom, Nathaniel, and Tudor pace the deck, anxiously awaiting the arrival of the Sultan of Gujarat and representatives of the British East India Company. When they arrive, Tom, in an inspired scene, delivers two simultaneous sales pitches, one directed toward the interests of the Indians, one toward the British. The final disclosure of the ice is a huge success with both. Tom offers a sample piece to the Sultan as a gift. The cargo of ice is being unloaded when hundreds of fierce, armed Indians arrive and surround the wharf. The Sultan himself arrives, in high dudgeon, and appeals to the British for justice. He's been tricked. The ice he was given yesterday is gone. Much chuckling about this on the part of the British, who explain that this is melting, something ice always does, but that fortunately Tudor has leased to them the exclusive rights to build icehouses in Bombay, following the secret methods discovered in America after long and arduous effort. Back in Boston, some time later, on the wharves, Lavinia and Katherine wait, and watch, and worry. Lavinia, peering through a spyglass, suddenly cries, “There!” It's the Tuscany! Both peer through their spyglasses, looking for a sign that will tell them whether the trip has been a success or a failure. At last they spot Tudor, Tom, and Nathaniel, standing in the bow of the first ship, decked out in flamboyant outfits. For some reason not made clear in the film, the Sultan of Gujarat, his attendants, his guards, a bevy of girls in harem pants, four elephants, and a delegation of British colonial officials have come along with them. They are all singing, “Hooray for Freddie Tudor,” a number that is, it must be admitted, a pallid reworking of “Hooray for Captain Spaulding.” It is sung to the same tune: Hooray for Freddie Tudor! Yo ho! The iceman cometh! “Did someone call me goniff?” Yo ho! Yo ho! Yo ho!THE TRIUMPH didn't last for the Pipers, although ice made Tom Piper a wealthy man. When he died in 1852, he left a considerable fortune, including stock in Tudor's ice business, but within two years his two sons and two daughters had lost it all. Tom Piper's eldest son, Eleazer, visited a palmist on the day after his father was buried. The thrust of the palmist's remarks was that Eleazer was about to go through a key pivotal time in his life, and that prospects were not good, but that Eleazer could make the best of things by trusting his intuition. Eleazer left the palmist's with his head reeling. In the course of his walk home, he decided to act in accordance with a hunch he'd had for some time. He had been keeping an eye on a British patent medicine, Tono-Bungay. Its sales had grown phenomenally. Eleazer had tried to persuade his father to invest in it, but Thomas Piper's interest in ice had been so consuming that he had paid little attention to his son; Eleazer suspected that his father thought little of his business abilities. The Tono-Bungay company was just beginning to make a serious move toward expansion beyond the British Isles, and Eleazer's intuition told him that now was the time to strike. If he could persuade his siblings to invest, they might obtain an American monopoly in Tono-Bungay, which ought to put them on a surer footing in the coming turbulent times that the palmist had predicted. This was surer than ice, as sure as sure can be. The sons and daughters of Thomas Piper agreed, swept up by the force of Eleazer's conviction and his hereditary gift for salesmanship. They divested themselves of everything ice had brought them and bid for and won exclusive rights to the American market for Tono-Bungay. Within a month, Tono-Bungay collapsed. The Ponderevos, who had launched the business in Britain, and the Pipers, who had hoped to advance it in America, were paupers. The palmist, confronted by a blubbering, drunk, and disheveled Eleazer Piper, told him that he had actually been extremely lucky. “If you hadn't followed your hunch in this matter,” she said, “there's no telling what might have happened. Of this, however, I am certain: things would have been far worse.” In the years that followed, the Piper fortunes rose and fell within a narrower range on the scale of success and failure. When they rose, they rose only to the level where there was enough for dinner and a little extra in case someone dropped by; when they fell, they fell to the level where there wasn't enough for dinner, and if someone dropped by, one of the children would answer the door and say that Father was out.In Topical Guide 259, Mark Dorset considers Popular Culture: Songs: “Hooray for Captain Spaulding” and Schemes, Swindles, and Scams: Tono-Bungay from this episode.Have you missed an episode or two or several? You can begin reading at the beginning or you can catch up by visiting the archive or consulting the index to the Topical Guide. You can listen to the episodes on the Personal History podcast. This led to Groucho being investigated by the FBI.When Marx Brothers became popular again in the late sixties/early seventies Groucho made a comeback with a show in Carnegie Hall in 1972. At the film festival in Cannes in 1972 he was made Commandeur des Arts et Lettres and in 1974 he received a special Academy Award for the achievements of the Marx Brothers.

Rob Zombie. One of the most polarizing filmmakers working in horror. From his first feature 'House of 1000 Corpses' to his re-imagining of 'Halloween' to his most recent film '31', the man's work certainly has it's fans but, let's face it, his detractors are legion. Why is that? How could the work of such an unabashed horror kid (who happens to be a rock star) be so derided by the community he so belongs to?We'll talk about each of Zombie's features (hey, it's only six!) and we've got audio clips of them too!!And of course wild tangents other stuff.Opening introduction and closing announcement is by GCOpening and closing music by Trigger Warning. This week Clark subjected Curtis to a movie, if we can call it that, The Mine from 2012 and one of Curtis' all time favorites House of 1000 corpses from 2003. Captain Spaulding takes over most of the commentary in this episode! Hope you enjoy!
Another day another horror movie to review. This go around we delve into the twisted mind of director Rob Zombie as he brings us the third excerpt of his 'trilogy' that began 14 years ago with the breakout hit House of 1000 corpses. In that film he introduced us to Captain Spaulding and his ragtag family, the adventures of whom carried on through the brilliant Devils Rejects where it seemingly came to a fitting end.So how does the story continue and is this movie a worthy successor to what has come before? Find out here in this spoiler movie review where we watch films so you don't have to.
We're resurrecting Rob Zombie's first full-length feature film, House of 1000 Corpses, and tearing it limb from limb. But mostly we're enjoying Haig's turn as the wacky-yet-intimidating Captain Spaulding, the clown with a murder ride in his gas station. Fried chicken, anyone?

The Firefly family home is raided. Baby & Otis manage to elude capture. With the help of Captain Spaulding, they continue their murder spree. But how long will their luck last? Before starting today’s episode we would like to take some time to remember a great and talented member of the horror community. The legendary Sid Haig passed Saturday, September 21st at the age of 80. We all heard murmurs of his declining health, but with his video in August confirming he was well, we thought the worst was over. This morning we woke to a post from his wife, Susan L. Olberg where she opened her heart and shared the incredibly sad news. We know that he is in a better place where he’s still kicking ass and taking names while enjoying every bit of his Tutti Fucking Fruity. Rest in peace, Captain Spaulding. Know we will never forget you and your light. Thanks for listening. If you haven’t subscribed, go ahead and do it. Leave a comment. You can watch this entire episode here - https://youtu.be/lSvgl4UBiLA The Fiends just saw a screening of Rob Zombie's new sequel to The Devil's Rejects and House of 1000 Corpses, 3 from Hell... This was a highly anticipated film in the horror community, and its predecessors have gone on to become Cult Classics. So the guys could not wait to see this movie. Otis, Baby, and Captain Spaulding are back to raise hell and inflict as much pain as humanly possible on the world. It turns out they did not die at the end of the last movie... There are a few weird choices and stunning surprises Zombie decided to include in his film. Oh Lydia, oh Lydia, say, have you met Lydia? Lydia The Tattooed Lady. She has eyes that folks adore so, and a torso even more so. Lydia, oh Lydia, that encyclo-pidia. Oh Lydia The Queen of Tattoo. On her back is The Battle of Waterloo. Beside it, The Wreck of the Hesperus too. And proudly above waves the red, white, and blue. You can learn a lot from Lydia! La-la-la...la-la-la. La-la-la...la-la-la. When her robe is unfurled she will show you the world, if you step up and tell her where. For a dime you can see Kankakee or Paree, or Washington crossing The Delaware. La-la-la...la-la-la. La-la-la...la-la-la. Oh Lydia, oh Lydia, say, have you met Lydia? Lydia The Tattooed Lady. When her muscles start relaxin', up the hill comes Andrew Jackson. Lydia, oh Lydia, that encyclo-pidia. Oh Lydia The Queen of them all. For two bits she will do a mazurka in jazz, with a view of Niagara that nobody has. And on a clear day you can see Alcatraz. You can learn a lot from Lydia! La-la-la...la-la-la. La-la-la...la-la-la. Come along and see Buffalo Bill with his lasso. Just a little classic by Mendel Picasso. Here is Captain Spaulding exploring the Amazon. Here's Godiva, but with her pajamas on. La-la-la...la-la-la. La-la-la...la-la-la. Here is Grover Whelan unveilin' The Trilon. Over on the west coast we have Treasure Isle-on. Here's Nijinsky a-doin' the rhumba. Here's her social security numba. La-la-la...la-la-la. La-la-la...la-la-la. Lydia, oh Lydia, that encyclo-pidia. Oh Lydia The Champ of them all. She once swept an Admiral clear off his feet. The ships on her hips made his heart skip a beat. And now the old boy's in command of the fleet, for he went and married Lydia! I said Lydia... (He said Lydia...) They said Lydia... We said Lydia, la, la!

Greg Sahadachny (@mistergreggles) atones for his sins against classic comedy by watching not only one, but two Marx Brothers films -- Duck Soup and A Night at the Opera. Along the way to redemption, we also discuss the Marx Brothers entire showbiz career from vaudeville to their final films together at United Artists, the history of cinematic comedy, perils of intellectualism, and the fate of modern cinematic funnymen like Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler. Hooray for Captain Spalding. And hooray for the weird, wonderful, creatively imitative assemblage of actors who are currently bringing the Marx Brothers ‘Animal Crackers’ to retro-ridiculous life at the 6th Street Playhouse. Originally a long-running play on Broadway, ‘Animal Crackers’ is best known for the 1930 movie version, considered by many to be the finest example of the pun-filled, language-assaulting, physically offbeat comedy that the Brothers Marx made a career of. The play, with songs by George S. Kaufman, also gave the Brothers Marx a tune they would become inextricably associated with: the aforementioned, Hooray for Captain Spaulding, a goofy prog-pop extravaganza containing one of Groucho’s indelible signature lines, ‘Hello, I must be going.’ The 6th Street production uses the Broadway script, so if you know the movie well, prepare for a bunch of bits and songs that were cut from the show when it was adapted for the screen. As Captain Spalding, played famously by Groucho, Jeff Coté gives an uncanny impersonation, from the painted mustache and active eyebrows to Groucho’s joyously twisty-turny dance moves. As the larcenous musician Emanuel Rivelli, aka Chico Marx, David Yen is delightful, blending mischievous enthusiasm with a confidently trouble-making underpinning of potential danger. Watching Yen and Coté toss famously outrageous one-liners back and forth is one of the show’s chief pleasures. “That’s a-not a flash, that’s a fish!” Well, that’s in the show. Also, expect a slightly sinister Harpo Marx, who, in the inventive, elastic-faced hands of actor Erik Weiss, is less an imitation of Harpo than a free interpretation of the goofily creepy Professor character he played in ‘Animal Crackers.’ Don’t expect Weiss to play the harp, though. In a conspicuously desperate and clunky homage to Harpo’s musicianship, director Craig Miller — who otherwise brings a parade of inventive ideas and cleverly inspired bits to the show – basically throws the brakes on the show as we in the audience watch Weiss, as Harpo, hanging out watching a movie of the real Harpo playing a tune. That probably should have been cut. On the other hand, Craig introduces a brilliant second act bit in which John Rathjen – absolutely superb in two supporting roles – steps out in his underwear to sing ‘Keep Your Undershirt On’ while putting on the costume of the marvelously droll butler Hives, nicely dueting with a similarly negligeed Jacinta Gorringe, as the marriage-minded matron Mrs. Rittenhouse. Also excellent, in duel supporting roles, is Abbey Lee, quick-swapping outfits and wigs as Mrs. Rittenhouse’s hot-to-trot daughter Arrabella and as the scheming neighbor Mrs. Whitehead. Lee, along with the aforementioned Rathjen, commands some of the show’s best musical moments, supported by a fine onstage orchestra under the direction of Justin Pyne, and some nice choreography by Joey Favalora. Unfortunately, many of the other voices in the cast often fail to soar or blend, unless, of course, one of the faux Mark Brothers is involved. To Tell the Truth, it’s hard to know whether Coté and Yen are singing well or not, because they sound so much like Groucho and Chico, and – like the rest of this overlong but frequently hilarious, beautifully and affectionately nostalgic show - are so stitch-in-the-side funny, nothing else really matters. ‘Animal Crackers’ runs Thursday-Sunday through September 18 at 6th Street Playhouse, 6thstreetplayhouse.com.

You Bet Your Life was a quiz show in the late 1940's and early 1950's, starting on radio and then moving to TV over time. Although the show was billed as a quiz show, it was really just a vehicle for Groucho to ad lib with the contestants based on their answers to his ice breaker questions. By the way, you might recognize the theme song as "Hooray for Captain Spaulding" from the Marx Brothers stage show and movie "Animal Crackers."
