Most parents walk into IEP or 504 meetings hoping to advocate for their child, but unfortunately, many of them walk out feeling unheard, overwhelmed, and unsure of what just happened. In this episode of The Soaring Child podcast, Dana sits down with attorney and licensed clinical mental health clinician Paula Yost to break down exactly why these meetings feel so difficult and what you can do to change that. Paula brings a rare and deeply valuable perspective, combining legal expertise with real-life experience as a mom navigating the system herself. She is the author of Tumbleweeds: How to Be an Advocate for Your Children and Yourself in a Failing System. You'll learn the critical differences between IEPs and 504 plans (and why many children with ADHD are often placed in the wrong one), how to recognize when your child isn't truly being supported (even if their grades look "fine"), and what to say in the moment when you feel dismissed or unheard. This conversation is packed with practical strategies, real scripts you can use immediately, and empowering insights to help you walk into your next school meeting with clarity and confidence. Most importantly, it will remind you that you have the right to advocate for your child every step of the way. Here are Fan Effect producer KellieAnn Halvorsen’s favorite fandom and nerdly picks for #WhatToDo this #Weekend across Utah for the weekend of Friday, April 25. Films are in focus with the big movie of the week focusing on the pop-king himself in the musically inclined biopic, “Michael.” The Salt Lake Film Society continues their Comedic Relief Series with ”Wayne’s World,” and “Clueless” screenings. Our festival pick of the week is the massive (and free) Tumbleweeds Film Festival showcases films about kids and for kids, by The Utah Film Center. And there are Earth/Arbor Day celebrations galore including at the Tracy Aviary, Ogden Nature Center, and the Utah Cultural Celebration Center. And if that wasn’t enough.. Our FanX friends are making some sort of announcement at the Clark Planetarium Saturday night, right before a screening of “Dune: Part 2,” to close out their SCI-FI month! As always, please remember to visit nowplayingutah.com to find even more arts and cultural experiences across Utah. Another great place to check out ideas, and share with me, is by searching for Facebook events. The brains behind Fan Effect are connoisseurs of categories surpassing nerdy, with a goal to publish a weekly "What to Watch” (taken from KSL-TV's Friday segment) and “What to Do” on the weekend minisodes, and two deep-dives episodes a month on shows, creative works, artists, local events, and other fandom topics. Based in the beautiful Beehive State, Fan Effect celebrates Utah's unique fan culture as it has been declared The Nerdiest State in America by TIME, and is hosted by KSL Movie Show's Andy Farnsworth and Deseret News / KSL Podcasts' KellieAnn Halvorsen. Send us Fan MailWelcome to Surviving-ish! In this episode, we dive deep into the intersection of legal advocacy and mental health with the incredible Paula YostPaula isn't just a high-level trademark attorney; she is also a licensed clinical mental health clinician, a foster/adoptive parent, and a powerful advocate for trauma-informed practices within the legal system. We start things off with our "surviving" moments—ranging from Paula's experience navigating a rare North Carolina snowstorm with three boys to the technical frustrations of IRS verification. From there, we trace Paula's journey as a first-generation college student who used hyper-achievement to forge a new path, eventually earning two degrees at Virginia Tech and pivoting to law school in the wake of 9/11.In this episode, we discuss:•The Court as Triage: Why Polly returned for a Master's in Clinical Mental Health to better understand how the legal system functions as a frontline for mental health crises.•Trauma-Informed Lawyering: How Paula teaches lawyers to recognize signs of mental illness and respond with empathy rather than just procedure.•The Cost of Caring: A candid look at secondary trauma and the emotional toll on advocates.•Advocacy in Action: Paula's work as a CASA/guardian ad litem and her personal journey of adopting a foster youth as an adult.•Resilience in Parenting: Navigating the medical challenges of her children, including cleft lip/palate and the realities of acute preeclampsia and premature birth.Paula Yost also shares a sneak peek into her upcoming book, Tumbleweed, which explores the themes of advocacy, healing, and the vital importance of supporting families through their hardest seasons. #SurvivingIsh #MentalHealth #TraumaInformed #LegalAdvocacy #FosterCare #Adoption #Resilience #Podcasthttps://www.amazon.com/Tumbleweeds-Advocate-Children-Yourself-Failing/dp/B0GQ9M2FK6https://paulayost.com/Support the show
In this spring‑cleaned episode of Linux Out Loud, Wendy, Bill, and Nate dust off their homelabs and see just how far Linux can push “retired” hardware. Bill talks about guiding a Linux‑first startup, Fyra Stack, as they build a colo and VPS business in downtown Chicago, wiring it all together with Proxmox, PostgreSQL, Snipe‑IT, and osTicket—plus a few cursed Zigbee light bulbs along the way. Nate dives into one of his favorite pastimes: installing openSUSE Tumbleweed on everything from a 2007 white MacBook to a 2015 MacBook Air and a pair of well‑worn Surface Pros, comparing battery life, sleep quirks, and how “modern” Plasma feels on ancient gear. Wendy rounds things out with creative test‑taking workarounds using ChromeOS Flex and a quick look at VDO.Ninja for remote recording, before the trio wraps up the cleaning spree. In this episode of The Cookbook, host Ira Gold Fetter speaks with Paula Yost—a lawyer, entrepreneur, and author of the groundbreaking new book, Tumbleweeds. Paula shares the raw and inspiring journey of adopting her daughter Tanya from foster care and the relentless legal battles she fought to hold the educational system accountable. This conversation explores the intersection of legal expertise, maternal instinct, and the necessity of systemic change for vulnerable children. Key Takeaways: The Power of Legal Advocacy: Paula discusses how her background as a lawyer allowed her to navigate the complexities of foster care and school board litigation that most parents find inaccessible. Challenging Educational Injustice: A look into why Paula chose to sue the school system to protect her son and ensure he received the support he was legally entitled to. Foster Care Adoption Realities: Insights into the process of adopting an older child (age 7) and the long-term commitment required to be their permanent advocate. The "Tumbleweeds" Catharsis: How writing became a tool for processing the anger caused by systemic failures and a way to provide a voice for the voiceless. Intuition Over Judgment: Using personal anecdotes, including Ira's history with homelessness, the duo discusses why you should never judge a person's potential based on their current circumstances. Hello and welcome to SEASON 20! of The Shift - the podcast that aims to tell the no-holds barred truth about being a woman post-40. Created and hosted by me, writer and broadcaster, Sam Baker. At any one time, approximately 13 million women in the UK are ‘in menopause', in the US that number rises to a humungous 75million. And yet, as you will be well aware, until just a few years ago, if you said the word menopause out loud in public the response was…. Tumbleweed. At best. That was my experience and it was the experience of today's guest, Melani Sanders whose message has become a siren call for peri and menopausal women everywhere - WE DO NOT CARE. Melani founded the We Do Not Care Club by accident, when a message she posted out of her own perimenopausal despair went viral on social media. Her followers doubled and then tripled and her post was flooded with comments from women who knew just how she felt because they felt the same. Now the 45 year old mum of three has over 3 million followers on social media (2 million insta followers @justbeingmelani and 1.5m on TikTok) and she's written the Official We Do Not Care Club Handbook - a guide for women in perimenopause, menopause and beyond who are over it. And who isn't?!
