Happy Monday, Fabulous Listener! Hope you are all doing amazing on this fabulous Monday. We are excited you have joined us during the 2024 season. We are getting ready to wrap up and are so grateful for your support. This evening, we have an amazing guest, the fabulous Mr. Jeff Giles, sharing his latest book, Langley Powell and the Society for the Defense of the Mundane. An experienced culture writer and editor who's been featured in a long list of publications including Paste Magazine, the Village Voice, American Songwriter, Ultimate Classic Rock, and Rotten Tomatoes, Jeff Giles makes his debut as a novelist with Langley Powell and the Society for the Defense of the Mundane. Although it's his first novel, Langley Powell is Jeff's third book, following Llanview in the Afternoon: An Oral History of One Life to Live, and Uncle John's Beer-Topia: A Heady Brew of Beer Miscellany. He can also be heard regularly as the co-host of the long-running Record Player podcast with Matt Wardlaw. When Jeff isn't working on his next project, he's probably either running off yesterday's calories or playing guitar (badly). Jeff lives in New Hampshire with his wife, two children, and a pair of dogs. For even more of his writing, subscribe to his Jefitoblog newsletter or follow him on Twitter. You can also find him on his site at https://langleypowell.com. Thank you for joining us this evening. Always a pleasure bringing you new books from incredible authors. Make sure to stay for next week's last episodes of the season. Happy Listening, DC

My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Jeff Giles, author of the book Langley Powell and the Society for the Defense of the Mundane. An experienced culture writer and editor who's been featured in a long list of publications including Paste Magazine, the Village Voice, American Songwriter, Ultimate Classic Rock, and Rotten Tomatoes, Jeff makes his debut as a novelist with Langley Powell and the Society for the Defense of the Mundane. Although it's his first novel, Langley Powell is Jeff's third book, following Llanview in the Afternoon: An Oral History of One Life to Live and Uncle John's Beer-Topia: A Heady Brew of Beer Miscellany. In my book review, I stated Langley Powell and the Society for the Defense of the Mundane is a humorous fantasy - another combination I had never read but truly enjoyed. It was sort of Harry Potter "esque" with far more tongue-in-cheek references and great bits of history trivia thrown in. The story starts with Langley's death - he is crushed by a falling piano. Langley spent his entire life debunking the idea of ghosts, magic, and anything you couldn't see with your own eyes or prove with science. However, when he becomes a ghost, he realizes he's been wrong. Before he can wrap his mind around his error, he finds himself on a quest to save mankind by finding his childhood hero - the magician who failed and thrust Langley toward his lifelong obsession of proving magic doesn't exist. This dual timeline story moves quickly, has great characters, and lots of laughs. However, it also causes the reader to think about what is important in life and what holds the universe together. I highly recommend this book. I'm changing things up a little for this episode as instead of discussing a new or classic album, I enlisted Matt Wardlaw from Ultimate Classic Rock to compare notes on our recent experiences seeing Genesis on The Last Domino? Tour. Genesis is my all-time favorite band, so there was never a question of whether I was going to see them, so much as a question of where and how often. Matt and I saw them about a week apart in different cities but in similarly located seats. We broke down the setlist, the performance, our Genesis origin stories, and more. Welcome one and all to THE MISSION, STYX's sonically sweet 16th studio album and its most ambitious, most challenging, and most rewarding release to date. Please take note of the official stardate, as THE MISSION has duly been set for liftoff June 16 on the band's label, Alpha Dog 2T/UMe. Fans can pre-order the album at any of these online retail outlets and Styxworld.com. The first single, “Gone Gone Gone,” was released today at radio and online retail outlets. A video premiered on Billboard.com and can be seen here. “The planets truly aligned for THE MISSION, and I couldn't be prouder,” says vocalist/guitarist Tommy Shaw, who co-wrote the album's storyline with longtime collaborator Will Evankovich (Shaw/Blades, The Guess Who). “It's our boldest, most emblematic album since PIECES OF EIGHT.” As founding guitarist James “JY” Young continues, “In the 40th anniversary year of our release of our biggest selling album of all time, GRAND ILLUSION, it just seemed truly appropriate to save our new studio album until this year. Needless to say, I'm very excited.” “THE MISSION is a deep, conceptual, and cinematic epic that offers listeners a thrilling emotional journey — and all ‘cast' with impassioned guitar parts and those textured, ‘chill-inducing' Styx vocals. Guitarists Tommy Shaw and James Young sound like they're energetic upstarts with something to prove, rather than members of a band with decades of history. This is a truly brilliant soundscape, as well as a tribute to the evocative power of the guitar.” — Michael Molenda, Editor-in-Chief, Guitar Player “A throwback to the styles of classic Styx records like THE GRAND ILLUSION and PIECES OF EIGHT, THE MISSION is a wonderful mix of knotty, '70s-era progressive rock madness alongside the melodic power pop the band does so well. Todd Sucherman might be the baby of the group, but he's an old soul when it comes to finding the right flavor for the new material—and he's not shy to provide a healthy slab of blazing hand technique, elevating parts to a whole other level of excitement.” -- Ilya Stemkovsky, Modern Drummer “Styx have really delivered a welcome addition to their catalog with the arrival of THE MISSION, which wraps in all of the important elements of their much loved classic sound, with a wealth of big hooks, anthemic choruses and most importantly, an album's worth of really good Styx music.” --Matt Wardlaw, UltimateClassicRock.com Indeed, THE MISSION is an aurally adventurous 43-minute thrill ride that chronicles the trials, tribulations, and ultimate triumphs of the first manned mission to Mars in the year 2033. From the hopeful drive of “Gone Gone Gone” to the stargazing machinations of “Locomotive” to the rough-riding blaze of glory that permeates the hard-charging “Red Storm” to the elegiac optimism of the closing track “Mission to Mars,” the album succeeds in delivering the greater good from a band that continues to fire on all cylinders, 45 years after signing its first recording contract. In fact, THE MISSION--which was recorded over a two-year period at Blackbird Studios, The Shop, and 6 Studio Amontillado in Nashville--displays the best aspects of the ongoing in-harmony musical intersection of the six-man STYX team: the aforementioned guitarist/vocalist Tommy Shaw, co-founding guitarist/vocalist James “JY” Young, keyboardist/vocalist Lawrence Gowan, original bassist Chuck Panozzo, drummer/percussionist Todd Sucherman, and bassist Ricky Phillips. The new music was created to reflect the viewpoint of the six-person crew enlisted for the maiden voyage of Khedive, the first entry in a new fleet of nuclear-powered interplanetary spacecraft underwritten by the Global Space Exploration Program (or GSEP, for short). The Khedive team consists of The Pilot, a fully hands-on, seat-of-the-pants born leader; a First Officer who serves as the team's big-brother figure; an Engineer who is skeptical of every phase of the mission but remains co...

This week our guest is Vicki Peterson of the Bangles. Vicki joins us to talk about the new archival release, Ladies and Gentlemen...The Bangles!, which is being released by Omnivore Recordings on June 24. The 16 track collection pulls together a hefty stack of rarities from the '80s, including the band's first single, early demo recordings, live tracks and all of the songs from their self-titled debut EP, marking the first time that it has been available on physical media since its release on vinyl in 1982. As Peterson told us during the conversation, the group's archives were, as she put it with a laugh, "far-flung." "We had to dig up a lot of this stuff," she says. "Luckily, my brother, who is an audiophile and a recording engineer/masterer, he had a lot of the early versions, because he actually recorded some of the early demos with us. For instance, the 'Bitchen Summer' track, he was a teenager, I think, at the time. So he helped us track down a lot of stuff we had. Bill Inglot [also] helped, you know, we literally had to find the original masters of the EP." It was that EP that provided a good amount of the inspiration for putting this collection together. "It sort of sparked from a long-seeded desire to have the EP available again. In my heart, I just wanted it available in a physical form," she says. "We just wanted to sort of reintroduce it to the world, because we’re proud of it and it was really the birth of the Bangles in a lot of ways. It just kind of encapsulates some of the things that brought of us together initially musically and it has been recently something we’ve been playing. We’ve been dipping into this collection for our live shows in the last year or so, just because it’s so much fun to play. It expanded from there and we looked into what exists of our archives and found some other examples of ‘baby Bangles’ stuff.” We discuss those early beginnings during today's interview and Peterson also shares what she's got on tap musically, both with the Bangles and in her own work outside of the group and towards the end of our chat, there's a great story about how the Bangles' version of "Hazy Shade of Winter" came together with an interesting twist that might surprise you. The Bangles will be playing shows later this summer and as Peterson tells us, they've got some other things in the works as well that folks can look forward to. Fans can stay in tune via the band's official website and Facebook page to find out more details as things are announced.
